Urgent Needs at Transform Burien Outreach
You Did It!
We are very excited to report that Highline raised
$5337 for the Care Net Baby Bottle Campaign!
Way to go! We are so proud of all the support you
gave. Pat Barnett (Community Outreach Team
Leader) is especially grateful for the all the hard
work and willing people that helped make this
campaign so successful. The total for the whole
campaign with many different churches involved
was $42, 500!
Items can be delivered to the Transform Burien
Outreach Center at 14501 - 4th Ave SW EVERY
Sunday (1-2 P.M.), EVERY Wednesday (10 A.M. -
3 P.M.), and EVERY Friday (10 A.M. - 1 P.M.).
(The Food Bank portion of the Outreach Dinner
couldn't open on August 3, the last time that
Highline hosted the meal, because there weren't
enough supplies.)

Note from Church Life Director
Hello Highliners!
Here is a quick update regarding some of the
activities mentioned in our August eNewsletter:
1) Thanks to the hard work of Gregg Louvier and
a host of dedicated giving volunteers, the HCC
Welcome Center is up and running! The
physical location will continue to see
significant up-grading before the end of
August. Spiritually, this area is even now
serving as a unity center, and it's importance is
growing weekly.
2) Thanks to Ben Kirkham and his dedicated
approach, the 2014 Tom Barnes Classic was
one of our best ever! Ben ran a very smooth
and joyous event, leaving plenty of room for
fellowship, unexpectedly good food, and the
enjoyment of God's great outdoors. The golf
was fun, too. Perhaps the best news of all is
that Ben has agreed to coordinate the 2015
Tom Barnes classic and has already made
notable progress towards our goal of making
next year's event even bigger and better!
3) Our Fall 2014 Bible Study classes have been
set. So have our connection groups and small
groups. Please allow me to simply say that the
leaders and lineup are exciting! The revised
and updated schedule will be available on the
H.U.B., and in print form to members and
regular attendees.
4) More things to look for during the month of
September: news regarding TOUCH classes,
new and better signage in the North & South
Buildings, updates regarding our Visitor-
Servant process.
Thank you for your faith, prayers, and support!
Your servant in Christ,
Jack

The ‘S’ Word
As a short term mission is born, evolves and comes
to fruition, it does so like any ‘boots on the ground’
military mission. The difference being, short term
missions are born out of the Word of God. They
follow scripture. *Go and make disciples of all
nations…(Matthew 28:16-20 NIV) . Powerful
Truths. Powerful words.
Writers and storytellers may know the power of the
pen, but Believers, know the power of the Word.
Often it is the combination of Divine timing and
Divine ink, where God will use words to bring
catalytic and powerful life changes. Salvation. I’d
like to call this today’s ‘S’ word of encouragement.
I have noticed there are a lot of ‘S’ words out there
lately. Some we sling without thought to the
audience around us. Some we whisper. Some ‘S’
words are so heavy lately, we cannot fathom the
pain they deliver. They are woven tightly into our
everyday world both, for the body of Christ and for
non-believers. However, it is out of Divine Ink,
words written in the blood of the Lamb that every
short term mission finds its words of
encouragement, it’s cornerstone…the good news of
salvation through Jesus Christ.
Once again, we, the Africa Hope Mission Team,
are preparing our hearts, minds, and spirits to
return to Africa. Our hearts are called to be the
‘boots on the ground’, hands and feet of Jesus
Christ delivering the good news of salvation. We
pray Highline family, that you too, will answer
God’s prompting. He may prompt you to buy a T-
shirt or sweatshirt in September, a pie for
Thanksgiving in November, or prompt you to
volunteer at the Christmas Tree Stand in
December. He may lead you specifically to
partner with us for funding or most importantly He
may call you to be a Word Ninja, asking you to
open your Bible to Ephesians 6:10 in prayer
warriorship with us. Whatever He asks of you,
we pray, our Highline Christian Church family,
that your answer will be yes. Yes, Lord, yes.
On my first short term mission experience I
witnessed, the power of God’s presence and the
power-packed punch of a church praying for our
safety while we were in the African desert in 2011.
Hundreds of thousands of miles from home, we
could feel your prayers under our feet, surrounding
us, protecting us, even encouraging us. My heart
told me the HCC Word ninjas were hard at work
using the power of prayer. God was listening to
you and acting upon your prayers, going before us
day after day in Africa, and on the way home.
All that being said, as a short term missionary,
there is no more powerful witness to the glory of
God, than the sight of young men and women
standing up, answering the call to accept Jesus
Christ as their personal Savior. Whether we bear
witness to one hundred new hearts given over to
Christ, or one heart who
knows now that
salvation is theirs,
salvation is serious
business that brings God
great joy.

I hope that you have been shopping, praying, or
thinking about how to participate with
Operation Christmas Child this year.
We will be distributing OCC shoeboxes on the
weekend of October 18/19 and collecting filled
and paid for boxes no later than the weekend of
November 15/16. This Back-to-School time is a great time to find
good deals on items that would bless a needy
child. Keep on the lookout for items that would fit
in a shoebox and that would fill the categories of:
Something to Snuggle With (ie stuffed animal)
Something Warm (ie SOCKS, hat, t-shirt,
gloves)
Something to Write On (ie notepad, coloring
book, journal)
Something to Write With (ie CRAYONS,
markers, SHARPENED colored or reg pencils)
Something To Play With (ie toys, BALLS,
jump ropes, calculators, play-doh, travel game)
Something Necessary (ie toothbrush/paste,
soap/washcloth, comb, flashlight) and
Some Hard Candy/Gum (no other food items).
Keep in mind that we cannot send used items,
breakable items, war-related items or any food
other than hard candy or gum. Please contact
Tammie Lindblom for any Operation Christmas
Child questions. If you are able to pay for the
shipping of someone else's box, contact Tammie
Lindblom or make a check payable to Samaritan's
Purse (with OCC in the memo line) for amounts in
increments of $7. Multiple boxes can be paid for
with a single check. If you are interested in having
someone else shop for you, contact Tammie
Lindblom.
The Slurry Walls of Life
As horrific as 9/11 was, it could’ve
been even worse if not for a 30-year-
old engineering feat. Reaching some 70
feet underground, a 3-foot-thick concrete structure
called a “slurry wall” surrounded the base of the
World Trade Center complex. Designed to prevent
the Hudson River from flooding the basement, this
wall prevented New York’s subway system from
flooding and countless additional people from
dying on September 11, 2001.
A slurry wall is constructed by pouring a thick,
goopy mixture of powdered clay and water into a
deep, narrow trench. The solution coats the sides,
preventing water and soil from collapsing the
trench. Pipes are then inserted through the slurry,
and concrete is pumped into the trench, pushing the
slurry up and out. At the WTC, the concrete formed
such a strong wall that even two airplanes and the
falling towers didn’t fracture it. Part of the slurry
wall still stands at the 9/11 Memorial site, a symbol
of resilience.
Sometimes God uses life’s “slurry” to make us
stronger than we ever thought possible. We might
wish something yucky hadn’t happened — until we
discover it was part of what sustained us, making us
resilient and enabling us to rise out of destruction
and death to awe-inspiring new life.

appears long in coming?
Faith that dares to ask in the first place?
Faith that understands we do not ask on the
basis of our own merit, but on His?
Faith that continues to ask even when the day
and way is very dark?
Faith that understands that God wants to hear
our requests and values our persistent prayers?
Faith like that of a couple I knew who continually
sought healing for the
wife who was left
severely disfigured
after an operation to
remove a brain tumor.
They attended various
healing services and
pleaded with the Lord
to bring healing to
her. Discouraged, they
went to their minister
to seek counsel. After pouring out their hearts
regarding their request and the apparent "no," they
asked their pastor if they were wrong in asking
God for healing. The pastor answered them, "I
would rather stand before God and ask Him why
He chose not to heal me, than to stand before Him
and admit I never bothered to ask because I didn't
think He'd answer me anyway."
Although I do not know the end of that story, I,
too, would not want to stand before God and tell
my Heavenly Father that I did not think He'd even
care to hear my request and because of that, I
could not be bothered to ask Him.
This chapter continues on to highlight other
acceptable prayers near to God's heart. Prayers for
justice, of confession and repentance, of blessing
and the touch of Jesus upon our children, of
questions--whether or not we are ready for the
answers, and for God's mercy--to give us what we
desire, though we do not deserve it. Faith to ask!
Will Jesus find faith like that upon the earth when
He returns? Will He find it in us?
The Prayer Closet
By Galen and Carole Marcille
Sometimes life can be discouraging. Answers to
prayer can seem slow to come or even non-
existent. What do we do in the face of times like
these? Quite simply, we keep on praying.
In Luke 18: 1-8, Jesus tells a story to encourage
people to always pray and to not
lose heart. In this story, a
widow goes to a judge
repeatedly to seek justice for
herself against her adversary.
The judge does not give two
feathers and a fig about God or
man, and continually turns the
widow away without her much-
sought resolution. The widow
refuses to give up and continues
to pester the judge for much-
desired justice, in spite of all the evidence to the
contrary that there was any hope for justice to be
received from the unjust judge. However her
continual seeking had worn down the judge, who
finally realizes that if he does not do for her what
she asks, he will never hear the end of it. So the
judge grants her request for justice against her
adversary.
Of course, as with all of Jesus' stories, there is a
moral to this story. If an unjust judge will grant a
persistent widow her request simply because he no
longer wishes to be harassed, how much more will
our Heavenly Father grant justice to His beloved
elect, who cry out to Him day and night? And
quickly!
And Jesus leaves us with a burning question at the
end of the lesson: "When the son of Man comes,
will He find faith upon the earth?"
Will He find:
Faith that believes that God is better and kinder
to His children than an unjust judge?
Faith that persists in asking even if the answer

News Updates I am excited about all the new changes going on with the HCC
Youth Ministry Program! However with these changes we are
going to need more leaders to join our team so that we can bet-ter reach our students! We have many different ministry oppor-
tunities and would love to get you plugged in! If you would like
more info or would like to join the illuminate youth ministry team please contact Pastor Steve.
We will be taking the month of September off from our
Wednesday night youth program. The purpose of this break is
to allow our students to focus on family and school during the busy time of starting a new school year. This break will also
give the illuminate leadership team some time to rest,
recharge and get ready for the fall kickoff in October. During
September our JH and HS Up-Word classes will continue to meet at their normal times and there will also be special youth
events and activities.

September brings all kinds of emotions and
changes for families. Some get excited about going
back to school while others are sad that summer
break is coming to an end. Fall sport families make
plans for practices and games and fair goers are
looking forward to one of the last fairs of the season
and are ready to do the Puyallup. No matter which
family you are, if you have children, your home
routine is about to change again and things at the
church are no exception.
Starting September 7th our fall class
schedule will begin. During the 9 a.m. worship
service our age and graded Sunday School Classes
will begin again. (Please see next page for class
assignments and the EC Page for infant-
Kindergarten class assignments.) During the
10:40 a.m.worship service the 1st-6th grade students
will continue to meet in the Activity Center for Base
Camp, children’s church.
When does the mid-week Summit Trekkers
start? Not until October. We hold off on starting
our mid-week ministry for a month to allow families
some time to adjust to all the new schedules.
Summit Trekkers will begin October 2nd and will go
from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
What will the kids be learning this year? The
Big God Story from Genesis to Revelation to our
own part in His big story.
We look forward to
partnering with you as you
help your kids engage with
the Big God Story as His
Children. Blessing on a
new school year!
