Donna Vanwieren then stated that this would need approval by the Social Committee’s Catering Chair as the 50/50 tickets are normally sold during dinners served at the clubhouse. Other fund-raising suggestions were offered. After much discussion, Chris Weegar proposed an amendment to the motion that a $150 one-time donation be made from the community funds to give the yarn group breathing space to discuss ways to raise additional funds. Highlands Annual Garage Sale Saturday, November 12th

8:00 to 2:00

So that you have plenty of time to clean out your garages and closets, this our early announcement that Ken White will once again organize our

neighborhood garage sale. The Sunshine Committee will host its annual bake sale at the same time.

Ken will take care of placing advertisements with local papers, post a large sign at our entrance preceding the event, and try to organize traffic flow the day of the event.

Our “private pre-sale” for residents will be scheduled on Friday, 11/11 from 2:30 to dusk for those who wish to sell in advance to Highlands residents.

The event will go on rain or shine. Arrow signs will be strategically placed to direct buyers to all areas of the community.

6

Moving Sale

Interested in lovingly cared for furniture including a split-king adjustable bed, golf cart, lift chair, or other large pieces of furniture? Joan Theologes is preparing to relocate

without taking a great deal of furniture. Her family will be officially clearing the house in mid-October, but sneak previews of what is likely to be available for sale can be scheduled after September 20th. Please make an appointment with either Janice Silva or Chris

Weegar if you are interested to taking a look. All sales will be negotiated by Joan’s sister Monica in October.

Please do NOT approach Joan directly either to view items or express your interest. To do so will only confuse Joan and the process her family wishes to follow.

7

Higher quality entertainment like Crystal Gage is relatively expensive to bring into the Highlands.

However, attendance levels and expressed enthusiasm for this past year’s higher cost shows indicate

better entertainers are precisely what Highlanders want and are willing to pay for.

To minimize the risk of dubious attendance for costly shows, the Social Committee has

decided to “package” 3 of the best shows into a “2017 Entertainment Series” and offer “season tickets”

for the series. The start of season ticket sales will be announced in an early fall 2016 newsletter to

give snowbirds a chance to contact friends, if they want a chance at early seat selection.

The “Series” will run from January 2017 through mid-April and include the following entertainers:

Friday, January 13th, Splittin’ Image

Saturday, March 18th, Rick Wilson

Saturday, April 15th, Red Hot & Blue Color

Both individual and series tickets will be sold for these shows, so there is no pressure on anyone to

purchase season tickets. However, we are offering “perks” for buying season tickets, so we’re hoping

this will be a sustainable approach going forward for ensuring predictable

attendance at more expensive shows.

Option Season Ticket for One Person General Admission / Single Ticket Sales

Reserved Seating Yes, picked at time of purchase.

It’s hard to believe it is September already! Our northern friends will soon return, the weather will cool down to a tolerable 85 degrees and my personal favorite . . .

Pumpkin Flavored Everything through the end of the year!

Following are a few items and updates of note for September:

Home Inspections: October is 4-sided home inspection month. Please take a moment now to look around your home and home-site. Do you need to pressure wash your home? Trim shrubs and weed beds? Stow away items left outside or behind your home? Those are a few of the things I will be looking for in each inspection. I know this is viewed by many as a negative and I do understand that some of you have an annual schedule for your maintenance work. The inspection form is merely intended as a friendly reminder to keep our beautiful community to the standard we all expect.

Sales/Operations Office: At the time of distribution of the last newsletter in July, Sharon and I were moving back to the clubhouse offices. And now, as most of you know, we are back in the sales office on Fairway Loop. After a short time, we realized there were still some issues to resolve with the A/C unit that services the offices and foyer. This does not affect the ballroom or activity rooms. I am working to resolve the issue and we should return to the clubhouse by the end of September.

Trash Collection: A few weeks ago trash was collected by Progressive Waste at 7:00 A.M. and many residents did not have their trash at the curb yet since collection has normally taken place in the afternoon. When we contacted Progressive Waste we were told that they cannot guarantee a specific time for each collection day. As per our Prospectus, you may place your trash at the curb after 6:00 P.M. on the evening before scheduled pick up. If you consider this option to avoid missing a pick up, please place trash bags in a can to prevent animals from scattering your trash.

We have had quite a few new folks move into the community these past few months. Please join us in welcoming them and acquainting them with the “Good Life” at The Highlands. Stop and say hello and be sure to invite them to your activities and functions.

I would like to thank everyone for their patience while we refurbished the homes at 38401 and 38402 Callaway. I know it has been an annoyance to have large trucks in the street day after day. It is nice to see these homes looking like part of the community again.

Have a Great Month!

8

LIGHT POLES All of the light poles along the streets are maintained by Duke Energy. If you observe a blinking light bulb or a bulb that is out, call Duke Energy at 1-800-700-8744 or contact them at www.duke-energy.com. Click on Customer Service. Please have the address and pole number available to report the outage.

(August Community Meeting Minutes continued from page 1)

• Sue Bayes announced that the quilting group will donate another quilt and will be selling raffle tickets soon.

• Ken White announced that the community yard sale is scheduled on Saturday November 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and preview night will be on November 11. The Sunshine Committee will again sponsor a bake sale during the yard sale.

• The 50/50 drawing was won by Ken White.

There was no additional business. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m.

Highlands Happy Hookers Help Veterans

The Highlands Happy Hookers (formerly known as the Yarn Crafters) have been quite busy as of late making lap blankets, afghans, baby blankets, and stuffed toys for various charities.

After individually wrapping and gift carding 75 blankets, the Highlands Happy Hookers delivered them to Zephyrhills VFW Post #8154, on August 16th. These will then be taken to the Veteran’s Nursing Home in Tampa for the Vet’s use. VFW Post #8154 indicated they would post the pictures on their Facebook page when that happens. - (www.facebook.com/vfwpost8154zephyrhills)

Another 10+ are being delivered by Jo Basile to various other nursing homes in the area.

The Happy Hookers continue to make items for charities, as well as work on and help each other with personal projects. So, if you enjoy having a good time, like to laugh, knit/crochet (or want to learn) or do other crafts - please come join the group who meet year long every Wednesday (10am-Noon) in the Clubhouse Craft room. - also, if you happen to have any yarn or unused craft supplies laying around and want to donate it to the group please feel free to contact any of our “hookers”.

If you’re interested in playing a variety of games, come join us on Thursday mornings at 10:00 AM and/or Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse card room. It’s an informal gathering of folks to play games according to the group’s mood. Pegs & Jokers and Hand & Foot are favorites. All are welcome.

Mariana Marz

• Euchre games Tuesday evenings • Pinochle on Monday nights • Open miscellaneous games Thursday mornings and Sunday evenings

• Poker Wednesday evenings • Ladies Cards on Wednesday evenings • Pegs & Jokers on Saturday nights • Bridge on a Wednesday evening once a month

Highland Lassies meet in the Clubhouse on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM to enjoy a fun, easy-to-learn card game. All you need to bring are 12 quarters and your sense of humor. We usually play two or three games (4 quarters per game), which takes about two hours.

Card Players

There are several opportunities to play cards regularly at the Highlands Clubhouse. They include:

Pinochle

Interested in playing Pinochle? Come to the Clubhouse Monday nights at 7PM. All experienced players are welcome. Come and have some fun.

Sue Klinger

Monthly Bridge

We have a monthly bridge game established, usually on the second Wednesday evening of the month - but subject to change based on player availability. What we’d really like to do, is have more than one table. If you enjoy bridge, or have played in the past but are a bit rusty, please give me a call and let me know you are interested. When I’m scheduling the next month’s play, I’ll check to see if you want to play and your availability.

Pat Carey

Except for the month of September this year, Bingo is every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. Cards only $5.00. Everyone is welcome.

Volunteers are needed to ensure that Bingo games continue. We need workers and callers. Contact: Rich Shaia.

Trash Pickup and Recycling

Trash Pick-up: scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are scheduled holidays when pickup isn’t scheduled. When there is no pickup, customers may put out double the amount of trash on the next scheduled pickup day.

Recycling (curbside program): Metal cans, all plastic (except #6) and glass containers may be left in labeled, rigid, reuseable containers at the curb very early on the first and third Wednesday each month.

Newspapers: A recycling bin for newspaper and other printed materials stands outside our clubhouse behind the kitchen. All types of printed paper such as newspaper, phone books, catalogs, and books. Cardboard from boxes is also acceptable as long as the box is broken down so that it lies flat. The payment made for papers is paid to the Highlands Residents’ Community Treasury.

Yard refuse: Call Holly if you wish to have HTA staff pick up lawn refuse you’ve created during a yard clean-up. If you’ve had professionals clean-up your yard, they should remove the refuse as part of their service.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please call one of the following telephone numbers or visit the web pages listed below: Pasco County Southwest Florida Water Management District

Low volume micro-irrigation (i.e., drip irrigation, misters, soaker hoses) or hand watering (using a hose with a self-canceling or shut-off nozzle, or both) of trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens may be used on an as-needed basis without regard to the normally allowable watering days or times. No special or extra watering is allowed for over-seeding an existing lawn.

Washing of personal vehicles is permitted once per week, only on the owners designated watering day, and using a self-canceling nozzle or automatic shut-off device. Decorative fountains or water features are prohibited unless they provide a necessary aeration and/or water quality benefit.

New Social Committee Members Wanted

Unfortunately several of our Social Committee members resigned in the middle of their two year term so

we are currently searching for two new Social Committee members. If you are interested and willing to

serve our community as a member of the Social Committee, please get in touch with Lorraine Davenport as

soon as possible. Having a full Social Committee is critical to the success of events staged here in the

Highlands. Please consider becoming a very active part of the Highlands by joining the Social Committee.

Compilation and Publication of Highlands Residents Directories

Twice a year Sandy Hoff, who throughout the year maintains a spreadsheet of Highlands directory data, and Chris Weegar, who formats and posts the information for distribution, work together to produce Highlands Directories. There is a fall set of directories and a spring set.

The fall set is based on data with a mid-September cut-off date. The fall set includes a directory that Hometown America (HTA) prints and has distributed with our November newsletter. Also included in the fall set is a pair of directories formatted by Chris that is posted online on our Highlands website. Our online version of the directory includes an alphabetic listing AND a street address listing that many residents find especially useful when preparing Christmas cards. The directory distributed by HTA contains only an alphabetic listing with emails listed separately. For space reasons HTA’s directory includes a maximum of two phone numbers per household — a limitation not experienced in our online versions.

The address of the online directory changes with each iteration of the online version. When a new directory is created, the web address is published on the directory “Corrections & Additions” last page of the newsletters physically distributed to every home. To help protect your privacy, that last page is NOT included in our online version of newsletters. The “Correction & Additions” page contains directory information that is new since the last general publication of a directory (i.e. either spring or fall). The date on the page identifies the specific directory.

The spring set of directories is only published online and generally announced in the March newsletter.

If you can’t find the current web address, or you don’t know how to print from the web, contact Chris Weegar for help. All changes to directory information should be sent directly to Sandy Hoff or [email protected]

Contributions for Causes

Food Pantry of Zephyrhills

Canned and other non-perishable items can be dropped off in the clubhouse for delivery to the Food Pantry of Zephyrhills. What started as a Christmas project by the Sunshine Committee has turned in to a year round collection effort. There is a basket for donation in the main meeting room, just inside the double doors from the lobby. Sunshine Committee members empty and deliver goods left on a regular basis.

Meals on Wheels Papers and bottles/cans can be brought to the East Pasco Meals on Wheels, 38145 15th Avenue, Zephyrhills (813) 782-7859. They have someone manning the collections from 7 - 11 am, but trailers are available for drop-offs 24 hours a day. Directions are 301 South to 15th Avenue, left on 15th, down two blocks to the facility. It's at the corner of 15th Avenue and 8th Street.

Habitat for Humanity Bring your used aluminum cans to Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, 37015 Orange Valley Lane, Dade City (Corner of Fort King Road and Clinton). The Church recycles aluminum cans for HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. A recycling container stands next to the dumpster in the parking lot across the street from the church.

Gulfside Regional Hospice

Contributions such as clothing, household goods, and furniture are accepted for their thrift shop just to the south of our main entrance across US 301. They are open for donations Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Ronald McDonald House Aluminum can tabs are being collected in a box located in the craft room (previously in the lobby by the map table). John Williams on Country Club monitors the box and sends on the tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald House when justified by the quantity. Help is deeply appreciated.

Library Donations We are proud of our library and welcome your donations. However, since space is limited we cannot accept the following items:

Encyclopedias text books reference books magazines older than 3 months outdated travel or tour books appliance manuals

Thank you! Your cooperation is appreciated.

Ticket Sales for Social Committee

Sponsored Highlands Events

Unless stated otherwise on event flyers or newsletter ads, tickets for all Social Committee sponsored events are sold at the clubhouse on Thursday nights before bingo and before Community meetings which are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cash payment is preferred, but checks made out to the Community Treasurer, Jim Sullivan, are acceptable.

When tickets are sold, a ticket is required to participate in any part of the event.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds will be issued but you are free to “transfer” or sell your ticket to other homeowners. An alternative is to have someone turn in your ticket and get meals “to go” when you or someone in your party are unable to attend.

Do you have 4 hours a week to share with others? Come be a part of the Florida Hospital Zephyrhills volunteer team and help fulfill our misson of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. Many positions are available to be of service to others. Come by, call, or go on line to see how you can

become a volunteer: 813-779-6256 or www.floridahospital.com/zephyrhills/volunteer .
