ABOUTTen years ago, four Irish singers, performers and songwriters decided to take a calculated risk. The constituent parts of The High Kings each had a wealth of history in the music business behind them, but knew that in order to maintain any level of creative interest they would have to boldly go where no other Irish ballad group had gone before. In truth, back in the mid-late noughties, Ireland needed a group like The High Kings. The heyday of ballad groups such as The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners was a distant memory for generations of music fans, and to have another bunch of Irish lads taking up the baton and continuing the tradition was great news to thousands of fans worldwide.

“We could sing well, play our instruments well and harmonize well,” says Darren Holden, humbly underselling somewhat the numerous skill sets of the individual members. “People were looking for guys with character, presence—not just cardboard cut-outs—so the respective experience we all had wasn’t just helpful but essential.” The four members immediately knew that something special was taking place (“we knew within the space of a few songs that there was magic”), and within months had clicked as a creative unit as well as friends.

The self-titled debut album, released in 2008, reached a highly impressive number two on Billboard Magazine’s World Music chart. It was during The High Kings second tour of the United States in 2011, however—having graduated from playing small venues to larger halls as they promoted their follow-up album, Memory Lane, which also crashed into Billboard’s World Music chart—that everyone involved realized the fan base was growing into something that no one had predicted. Subsequently, the group’s tour of Ireland sold out within hours. “We didn’t expect that,” admits Holden, “and then about three gigs into that tour we realized we had touched not only a nerve but also a memory. People loved what we were doing, and they would tell us after the shows that what we did and how we were doing it meant so much to them—they had waited years for a group like us.”

As if that wasn’t good enough, The High Kings received the stamp of approval from the likes of Christy Moore and, perhaps more pertinently, Ronnie Drew, the lead singer of The Dubliners, and the man behind one of Ireland’s most recognizable and enduring ballad voices. The High Kings had achieved what many had thought improbable, if not impossible: they were moving the Irish ballad tradition into the here and now, carrying along with them the steadfast older fans while simultaneously bringing it to a new audience. “The gigs were getting bigger and bigger, and we felt we were breaking down barriers.”

More was to come in 2013 with the group’s third studio album, Friends for Life, which featured original songs among the traditional fare. Such an undertaking had always been discussed, reveals Holden. “On Memory Lane, we stuck to the tried and tested formula, and that was a really good plan, because the album sold very well. But with Friends for Life, which was originally planned as another covers record, we worked with Sharon Shannon, who co-produced, and that changed things significantly for us. She initially heard one of our songs—“Oh Maggie,” which I wrote—and she really thought it should be included. And then several more songs written by group members followed.” According to Holden, The High Kings stepped out of the shadows by taking the original songwriting route. “We were delighted! We felt the songs were really good, and we sensed it was the next step. We finally sensed we were about to embark on a new chapter for The High Kings, rather than repeat the approach we took on the first two albums.”

ABOUTStepping out of the shadows inevitably threw light onto their own songwriting talents. Credibility, too? “Absolutely. With versions of well-known or previously written songs, you can get four people talented enough who are very handy singing them, but with original songs you mark your own territory, you stand out. And we were lucky, thankfully—we had a couple of original songs that were hits in various parts of the world.” The development of original songwriting—ballad-style but with contemporary touches—from each member of The High Kings continues apace, but balance must be maintained. To a degree, expectations have to be met while still moving specific creative elements forward, which is why the group’s fourth studio album, Grace & Glory, takes them back to the essentials that kick-started their career in the first place. “We felt it was the right time to park the original songs for a while,” says Brian Dunphy. “We did a two-year tour for the Friends for Life album, and then we put out a live show album/DVD—Four Friends Live. That was received so well that we felt a back-to-basics approach—traditional ballad songs with new arrangements—would be good.”

To say that The High Kings are charting a new course for Irish ballad music—equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful—is an understatement. They are, essentially, marking out a new and bright era for Irish folk music, and aiming to bring a broad demographic along for the journey. With 2016’s Grace & Glory, the band widened their appeal and fan base, as Clancy affirmed. “There is something for everybody on the album, and any doubters out there might just discover there’s a whole lot more to us than perceptions would have them believe. Previous High Kings albums have been stepping-stones, but this one sees us on top of things.”

2017 saw the band continue with intensive touring of Ireland, the UK and America, in tandem with a rapid growth in their digital and online profile. It is also the year that the band reached its tenth anniversary which has been marked with a very special compilation celebrating a decade of outstanding songs and performances. The departure of original High King Martin Furey and the arrival of young-gun George Murphy has brought a new hunger to the High Kings and their audiences alike.

The November 2017 release of DECADE-BEST OF THE HIGH KINGS was received with rave reviews and record sales figures with the band again topping the Irish Album Charts and returning to the Billboard World Music Charts once again.

The DECADE World Tour promises a joyous trip down Memory Lane, to the music and song ofyesteryear, this time performed in a contemporary style and arrangement that still remains true to the original. Here’s to the next 10 years . . . Here’s to The High Kings . . .

For the great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad,For all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad.

- G.K. Chesterton, The Ballad of the White Horse

Traditional Irish music is an oral tradition whose origins can be traced back to when the Celts first arrived in Ireland, almost 2,000 years ago. Although the Celts traveled through Spain, France and Britain, it is in Ireland that their tradition has best survived. The Celts were influenced by music of the East, and it is believed that the traditional Irish harp originated in Egypt.

Irish music traditions have been passed on from generation to generation by listening and learning by ear, a practice still encouraged today. But why has Irish music remained so important to the people of Irish descent? It is because the history of the Irish is enshrined in their ballads. These songs have become an important source for preserving and sharing the stories of the Irish and emigrant communities.

Irish people have suffered greatly over the centuries through wars, invasions, famines, evictions, and oppression, but the spirits and love of music is what has survived. During the Great Famine of the 1840s, one million people died, and it’s estimated that another two million emigrated. On leaving Ireland, the immigrants brought with them their songs and music. Soon a traditional Irish music network was established in New York, Chicago and Boston — where there were large concentrations of Irish populations. Those who were driven from their homeland used song and dance to keep their memories of home alive.

By the 1920s, the first recordings of Irish musicians were made in the USA, and these recordings made their way back to Ireland, which had a dramatic effect on the musical traditions back in Ireland. In the US, dance tunes were faster and pianos were used as an accompanying instrument and this was adopted back at home. But it wasn’t until the 1950s & 60s when Irish music found a wider audience beyond Irish pubs and homes, and served a purpose beyond something to be danced to. Sean O’Riada established “Ceoltoiri Chualann” — a band of traditional musicians with the aim of creating new music built on the traditions of the past. He developed a formula of playing solos within the group. Their music was to be listened to, not dance to.

The High Kings credit their musical style to The Clancy Brothers — Paddy, Tom, Bobby and Liam, four of the nine children from a musical family born in Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary, Ireland, who immigrated to Toronto, and then to Ohio and later New York City. Their first album used a reliable formula: songs about drinking and Irish rebels. They infused their music with fast-paced American folk, jazz style improvisation and banter of beat poets/comedians. As legend has it, the Clancys’ mother sent over four thick, white Aran sweaters so her boys could stave off New York’s winter chill, and that is what they were wearing when they hit it big on The Ed Sullivan Show. In the end The Clancy Brothers became just as famous for their sweaters as their music.

The High Kings are charting a new course for the Irish ballad — equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful. Ireland has given us an ancient nation of musicians and storytellers. The fusion of the two traditions has produced songs of immeasurable proportions whose themes range from deeply political to obscene, from tragedy of heartbreak to the tragedy of a brewery strike, from revolutionary triumph to extra-marital parody.

MAC BITES — A Taste of the Show

JOHN HAGEN has been described as “astonishing, a superb tenor of deep musicality.” He made his Lincoln Center debut in New York City in Teatro Grattacielo’s mounting of Mascagni’s Gulglielmo Ratcliff. Hagen created three

tenor roles in the world premiere of The Lost Dauphin for Pamiro Opera airing on PBS. He has performed a vast array of operatic roles ranging from Alfredo in La Traviata, to the title role of Otello for Cleveland Opera on tour. He is highly regarded for his performances of the Verdi Requiem and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, having performed these works with more than a dozen symphonies across the United States. He has received many awards throughout his career including finalist in the New Jersey Opera Association of Verismo Opera competition held at Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Opera Auditions Regional Finalist, and winner of numerous other competitions. Hagen has taught voice and vocal pedagogy at Wartburg College and at his alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa.

MARCUS COLLINS was born in a small town and began performing at the age of four. He first learned how to sing by emulating his favorite artists like Garth Brooks, George Michael and Freddie Mercury before training classically in college.

Collins has performed throughout the world on cruise ships and numerous stage productions including a performance in Times Square with the Broadway cast of Hairspray, Off-Broadway’s Altar Boyz as Matthew, and Permission: A Rock Musical. He also starred in multiple productions

of The Sound of Music in the roles of Kurt, Rolf and Uncle Max. Beyond music he has worked extensively as an actor with appearances in more than 100 episodes of network television and 25 films including P.S. I Love You, Semi-Pro, Delirious, 30 Rock, Sex and the City, recurring roles on One Life to Live and As the World Turns, and a Guest VJ on MTV’s TRL. One of his favorite roles was appearing as Edward Carnby in the video game Alone in the Dark for Eden Games in 2008.

JC FISHER has entertained audiences around the world for the past 15 years. In high school, he had a passion for sports and also enjoyed singing in church. He discovered a deeper love for singing at Wichita State University, where he

earned his bachelor’s degree in Music. Fisher performed various roles including Rodolfo in La Boheme, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Henrick in A Little Night Music and even Miss America’s duet partner at the 1997 Miss Kansas Pageant. After college, Fisher traveled to Lucca, Italy, where he sang in the Puccini festival under the direction of acclaimed Italian maestro Lorenzo Malfatti. He then created a home base in Katy, TX, before sailing the high seas aboard more than 75 cruise ships worldwide as a guest entertainer. This allowed Fisher to create a show featuring many different genres of music and world class arrangements, which eventually led to his idea of forming The Texas Tenors. After many years of traveling and concerts, his most memorable performance is still one from college where he found his future wife. Jennifer Vannatta, Miss Kansas 1998, married Fisher in 2004 and they have three children.

Since their whirlwind debut 10 years ago on NBC’s hit show, America’s Got Talent, The Texas Tenors have accumulated a long list of awards, accolades and an enthusiastic fan base, which includes three Emmy Awards for their first PBS special, You Should Dream. This Fall, TTT debuted their second PBS special, Rise, in addition to the release of their brand new album of the same name. Rise has been a Billboard chart topper since its premiere. The group has performed more than 1,300 concerts around the world including a 24-city tour in the UK and China, and have collaborated with some of the most prestigious symphony orchestras in the United States, which include the Cleveland Pops, House Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony to name a few. They were recently named the #10 Classical Artists in the world, according to Billboard Magazine.

From Bruno Mars to Puccini, Marcus Collins, John Hagen and JC Fisher treat audiences to a unique blend of country, classical, Broadway and current pop music. They use breathtaking vocals, humor and a touch of cowboy charm to create an unforgettable live show.

The Texas Tenors have also used their talent beyond concert halls. They have been featured entertainers on NBC’s The Today Show, Hallmark’s Home and Family and The 28th Annual Cinematheque Awards honoring Matthew McConaughey, to name a few. Other notable performances have included NBA games, the PBR World Championships in Las Vegas and a variety of charity events. Hagen, Collins and Fisher are always ready to give back and promote awareness for organizations near and dear to their hearts, including The Child Fund International, Homes for our Troops and The Mission Project.

The Texas Tenors proudly remain self-produced and managed with a commitment to quality, family entertainment for all ages. Whether it be stage, television, recording or multi-media projects, these “three friends with a dream” never forget their roots.
