"Sing a song of seasons, something bright in all, flowers in the summer, fires in the fall.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

One of the nicest things about living in the Great Lakes district is the change of seasons. As the greens of summer faded into a colorful fall we can reflect on our trials and triumphs in the garden, knowing that next spring will bring new challenges and hopefully more cooperative weather.

It was during one of those beautiful fall days that our District Gathering was held in Worthington, Ohio. The members of the Delaware and Central Ohio units put together a most informative and entertaining conference. Our trip to the Worthington Farmers Market was followed by speakers, Jan Hilty, Rita Heikenfeld and Dawn Combs. During the business meeting the members present voted to donate $1,000 to support a speaker at

EdCon in California, 2014. Thank you. New HSA Longevity Pins were presented to members attending that have been involved in HSA for 5,10,15,20,30 years. Congratulations to all. It is always fun to attend these meetings to meet new friends and renew old friendships. Thank you to everyone who helped put together this most enjoyable educational conference.

We are currently looking for ideas and locations for our Gathering next year, Septermber 12-13.. If you have any thoughts or suggestions please send them along to me, [email protected], or Bonnie Porterfield, 7580 Andover Way, Hudson, Ohio 44236.

This newsletter is to share information from other units and MAL's in our District. Each Unit Chair is asked to send along information about what their Units have been doing. I hope you enjoy reading what others are doing in our district and will

support their activities and visit their gardens when you are in their area.

As this is my first newsletter for the Great Lakes District, I would like to thank Linda Wells, our past district delegate, for her help and guidance in this transition. I would also appreciate any suggestions for future issues.

Remember, if you change your email or address, please keep your unit and HSA current. We don't want anyone to miss out on any news from HSA!

Also, with the holidays fast approaching, don't forget to shop HSA for beautiful scarves, baskets and perhaps a gift membership.

I look forward to representing all members of our district as well as visiting units and organizing next year’s District Gathering.

With Gratitude, Bonnie

News from the Delaware County Unit- Delaware, Ohio

The Delaware County Unit of HSA in cooperation with the Central Ohio Unit in Westerville were co-hosts for the Great Lakes District regional meeting, September 13-14. Since this was our units first time to host this event, it was quite an undertaking, but very well done. Many meetings at Panera, and a trip to Marny Dilts house to do flower arrangements for the tables, which was great fun, along with who wonderful organizers made it an event to remember.

It was a beautiful fall day for a walk uptown Worthington to attend Worthington's Market Day. So we loaded up with fresh fruits and veggies and then back to the Griswold Center for an afternoon of great speakers.

It was a marvelous Herb day, one that everyone seemed to enjoy. If you were there, thank you for coming. If you were not, we missed you!

Frankenmuth Mid-Michigan Unit

Updated history of HSA FMMU for the dedication ceremony held on November 4, 2013, as we dedicate our new wind chimes and the garden sculpture designed and constructed by Dave Holtslander. Installation of sculpture by John Jankowski.

In May of 1980, the Frankenmuth Historical Museum offered to area residents an INTRODUCTION TO HERBS class, the class was taught by Eve Elliott, who lived in Caro at that time and was a Member-at-Large of The Herb Society of America.

When the class ended, the group wanted to continue meeting together. A study group was formed. Mary Neuchterlein was elected our first chairman; and within two years the group applied for membership in The Herb Society of America. Founding members include Marie Keinath, Elaine Kimmerly, Mary Nuechterlein, Gloria Rodammer, Jeanne Safford, and Susan Traubenkraut who are still members of our Unit.

The motto of The Herb Society of America is Herbs-For Use and Delight; and our Unit shares that same philosophy. At our meetings, workshops, and herbal luncheons we share with others the joy we experience in growing and using herbs. Through our public garden, we provide an attractive place for the community to view, touch, smell and learn about herb plants and their many uses.

For many years, our fundraising was dedicated to the construction of a garden designed specifically for herbs. Our goal became a reality in the summer of 1989, when the design was approved and the foundation work

started. Formal dedication of our GARDEN OF HERBAL EDUCATION was held August 20, 1991.

The ivy-colored walls of the Frankenmuth Historical Museum provide a lush backdrop for the mounds of herbs and perennials featured in our garden. Located on the south side of the museum at 613 S. Main, Frankenmuth, the garden has been designed to both beautify the area and educate the public in growing and using herbs.

In the summer of 2001 the Unit purchased and installed a fountain in our newly remodeled herb garden. Laura Jeanne Kehn was Chairman of the Unit at the time. We once again gathered in the garden to dedicate this addition. In 2012 Unit members started discussing the replacement of this structure with wind chimes. Debbie Sparschu, Garden Chairman, researched the project with the final results before you. We have many people to thank for beautifying our garden over the years. It is up to us to continue the tradition of Herbs-For Use and Delight in Frankenmuth.

In honor of the 10th year anniversary, Kathy Conklin. Wrote the following poem: I would like to share if again with you today.

THE MAGIC OF HERBSAs Destiny would have it

We started with a simple classa few plants

And a friend named Eve.But we grew...And we grew

To be so much more. For many now

Our coming togetherIs no longer just a night out

ButA way of life.

For there is so much to shareA cup of tea,

A favorite plant,Our very selves.

TogetherWe learn, we grow, we become

As the magic of herbs continues...

With the scent of these nosesgays filling the air around us, may we always remember those who have gone on before us who have made this herbal garden special to all of us present today.

Thank you for coming to the herb garden today as we dedicate this beautiful work of art which graces our garden and serves as a stand for the wind chimes.

Southern Michigan Unit Fall

The highlight of our summer was being asked by Sister Marie Benzing to be part of an educational enrichment program in Detroit serving the community’s Hispanic grade school students. We agreed to a two day program, one hour each day. The title was Planting and using Herbs from My Garden. Five herbs were chosen. We had 24 students and 3 adults in class plus 6 members of our unit. The first day we introduced the plants and planted our gardens in 6” clay pots and carefully labeled each garden. We were delighted when a student pointed out that mint smelled like her tooth paste. The second day we used each herb in food. We added lemon balm and oregano to salsa, cilantro to rice and lemon thyme to ice cream. We added mint to the lemonade. The students were very engaged and asked a lot of questions and were quite proud of how their gardens looked. We enjoyed every minute we were there. – hopefully growing future HSA members.

In September we partnered again with Telly’s Nursery and Greenhouse to present two herbal programs to the public. As well as an opportunity to reach out to the community each programs is a fund raiser for the unit. In September we returned to meeting once a month in a member’s home. We met in the evening at Sharon Spragg-Schaedel’s. Sharon has been working on a website for the unit .It was exciting to see it starting to come to life with a logo, articles and photograph’s.

In October we met in the afternoon at a member’s home that has a small apple orchard on the property. The program was Making Apple Cider. Oh Fun! We were given a bag and went into the orchard to pick for our selves. We also had a map so we knew which apples we were picking. Then we picked more apples and broke into groups that scrubbed the apples, quartered, chopped and put them into an apple press. We were surprised at how much strength it took to press juice from the apples. Mixing all the varieties together produced a cider that was outstanding. We then topped off the evening with a splendid pot lock. Each dish had apple as its main ingredient.

Next month we will move into studying 2014 Herb of the Year Artemisias and the Notable Native Asclepias

For many years The Southern Michigan Unit has wrapped books at the holidays for book stores as a fund raiser for the unit. This year the unit voted to have a Non Event in December instead. I think other units have also done this. We are happily waiting to see how much it will cost us to stay home and do nothing.

On August 18th 2013, we had a docent-led tour of the Rodef Shalom Biblical Botanic Garden in Pittsburgh. On September 16th, 2013 we had a guided tour of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, Oakdale, PA. Just in time for Halloween, we had a presentation on "Herbs from the Witch's Garden" by Andrea Jackson (HSA-WPA Unit member) on October 21st, 2013. She explored how some plants are particularly "witchy" and how others have magical properties we may not have considered.

On November 18, 2013 (10:00 a.m.), we will have a presentation on "Dyeing the Blues: Blue Dye Herb Plants", by Katherine Montgomery (HSA-WPA Unit member), at the Old Economy Village, 270 16th Street, Ambridge, PA 15003. Blue jeans have become a worldwide costume, but few know the rich history of their blue color which has been used for clothing for thousands of years.  Indigo and woad are two dye plants that can grow in Western PA gardens.  Katherine will

discuss these plants and their history and do a brief dyeing demonstration.

“Artemisia, Herb of the Year” will be discussed by members of our Unit’s Horticulture Committee on February 17, 2014 (10:00 a.m.), at Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

On March 17, 2014 (10:00 a.m.), we will have a talk on “Herbs and Herb Garden Design”, by William Paxton, a landscape architect from Latrobe, PA., at Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

Western Reserve 68th Herb Fair is our major fund-raising event that always takes place the second Saturday of October. No two herb fairs are the same. Last year’s rush of early shopper’s differed from this year’s steady flow of the more than 600 visitors throughout the day, giving us more time for individual exchanges about herbs—a pleasure both unexpected and rewarding. Traditional and new herbal products, Herb Garden tours, and a Home for the Holidays seminar were presented.

A record number of tussie mussies created with beautiful, meaningful, and fragrant herbs from our Garden were cut and placed in water the very day before. Plant sales from our Garden and the Garden Market were popular. Beautiful products—dried wreaths, greeting cards with dried flower-petal designs, potpourris, packaged herbs, jams, jellies, baked herbal and tea breads went home with happy customers.

It goes without saying that the Herb Garden is vital to the needs and expectations of the Herb Fair, and endures as our place to learn about herbs. The Herb Fair, in turn, contributes support to the Garden. This one-day Herb Fair provides funds for planting and maintaining the Garden; confers incentive horticultural scholarships for college students; and increases awareness of herbs among visitors and shoppers, thus fulfilling our mission to educate ourselves and our public about the uses and

delights of herbs. The Garden not only provides tours and visits on Herb Fair Day, it provides numerous opportunities for schoolchildren, Case Western Reserve University students, bus tours, a fair number of international visitors, and residents of Greater Cleveland, to learn about herbs and gardening throughout the gardening season from early April to November. Our members are happy to interact with the public on Tuesday and Thursday workdays, and special event days; These visits provide education for us, too. Visit our website, http://www.westernreserveherbsociety.org for more information about the WRHS Garden, Herb Fair and WRHS.

Several of our members enjoyed attending the 2013 Educational Conference in St. Louis and the Great Lakes Gathering in Columbus. Both were excellent conferences for learning and networking, again reminding us that a wealth of knowledge, resources and privileges are readily available from HSA.

WRHS is an Affiliate group of the Cleveland Botanical Garden (CBG). We attended the Affiliate Fall Forum, the Annual Sustainability Symposium, and are grateful for the use of the CBG Library and the accessible horticultural staff. We participated in the popular RipeFest from September 21-23, conducting Herb Garden tours and demonstrating “Healthy Herbal Dips” using herbs from the Garden.

We still have work to do getting ready for WinterGlow, the CBG show that opens the day after Thanksgiving. Representatives of each Affiliate group decorate a holiday tree, with their own choice of a garden theme. Rosemary Verey’s book, The Garden in Winter, is our theme this year. Tree ornaments that represent items we might use in our own herb gardens, such as hardscaping, trellis, fencing, boxwood topiary, bulbs, baskets, bird nests, rabbits, watering cans, and more. Ornament workshops for

children are presented weekly by our members during the month of December.

The December Holiday Tea continues a warm tradition of many years. Members bring favorite festive sweets and savories, and enjoy a seasonal program by professional community musicians. It is a time of both renewing acquaintances and extending friendships and good wishes.

Looking ahead, members of the Dye Garden Section are in the final stages of preparation for their March presentation, “The Science, Art and History of Coloring with Plant Parts”. Garden Section plant orders and other organizational matters will be complete by March anticipating the opening of the gardening season that begins early April.
