¶ PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

Sharon and I returned feeling restored in body and spirit after being in both our home towns visiting family and old friends. While I have often visited Columbus Ohio where Sharon grew up, I have not been back to my

hometown of Frankfort, Kentucky since the early nineties. I visited the place where I grew up and became reconnected to a cousin I haven’t seen in years. I felt a special feeling when I drove by the First Baptist Church of Frankfort, KY where I was baptized and then later ordained to the gospel ministry forty years ago next month. While in Kentucky, we visited Bardstown and enjoyed an outdoor drama based on the life and music of Stephen Foster. All of it was a thrill and so good to walk the sidewalks of my younger years. Happily, the city has done a mag-nificent job of preserving the history, character and beauty of the city. Our son Craig, called this the “Nostalgia Tour.” And certainly, it felt that way. There is something so good about connecting to our roots and letting the nourishment of deep roots feed us. It is true in our church as well. Our 109 years is continually a wellspring of nourishment and encour-agement for the future. God has again and again enabled us to see goodness and grace in this place. You are all very special to our family and our years here continue to saturated with fulfilling ministry. I’m so glad that God called us to this place as our last place of full time pastoral ministry. As we continue through the summer months together as pastor and people, I am ex-cited about all God is preparing for this ministry beyond our years with you in a pastoral role. As I return from vacation, I am aware of how blessed we are as a church to see all kinds of new things happening and emerging. I have looked at the new rooms for children’s classes and gym floor and see how, even in the summer our attendance continues to grow and I’m so grateful for all God is doing here. During vacation, I was aware of how much Matt and Emily’s leadership and commitment have added to our effectiveness in outreach and worship. They bring such vitality and wisdom beyond their years. Thanks Matt and Emily for a great VBS...and for a wonderful VBS celebration service...great idea...wish I could have been here for that! Looking forward to Cruise Night Outreach, our beach days with the kids from our VBS and church plus enjoying this summer with you all!

Summer blessings to each of you!

YOUNG ADULTS BBQ @ THE ANDREWS' HOUSE

On Sunday July 14th at 5:30pm, young adults are invited

to the Andrews house for some good ol' fashion BBQ. Friends and family are welcome, as well. Please

bring $6/person to help pay for the meal. Con-tact Pastor Matt if you would

like to attend.

Our spiritual growth would be stifled, if uniformity were our goal. Our congregation’s life would grow monotonous.

Thankfully the love of Christ is our goal at FBC Glendale. Be-cause of this, people from all different walks of life are at-tracted to our church. They are seeing a congregation united in Christ that above all else is to committed extravagant love. They are seeing a church that will actively support and guide them as they grow in their faith.

A clear sign of a healthy, grow-ing, and biblical church is one that cultivates diversity. That is

what we are do-ing at FBC Glen-dale, and you should be ex-tremely proud of that.

~Pastor Matt

In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity. (Anonymous)

I don’t know if you’ve realized it yet, but we are a diverse congregation. It is a unique blessing to look around the sanctuary on any given Sun-day and see people from all walks of life—African Ameri-can, Guatemalan, Anglo Sax-on, Chinese, Indian, Filipino, Latino, Armenian…I could keep going. We’re also diverse in our giftedness, with mem-bers coming from various oc-cupational and educational backgrounds. Finally, we are a theologically diverse congrega-tion, with God-fearing individ-uals who share differing per-spectives on how God and the church relate to our world. All

PASTOR MATT’S MEDITATIONS

that diversity under one roof! Can you believe it?

I cannot emphasize enough how special this diversity makes our church. Coming from churches in the South where Sundays can be the most segregated day of the week, it is most refreshing for me to know that Sundays at our church can be the most united day of the week. Diver-sity within a church shows that the congregation is united under Christ. Diversity, in fact, is a fruit of unity. A church united under Christ follows Paul’s advice to the congrega-tion of Colossae. Above all oth-er Christian virtues, they “…put on love, which binds them all together in perfect uni-ty.” (Col. 3:14) Notice it is not uniformity that binds us to-gether in perfect unity. How boring would it be to go to a church where everyone looked, talked, and thought the same?

YOUTH MOVIE MANIA

Every Wednesday in July at 6pm, our youth will grab some pop-corn and watch a movie together in the church coffeehouse.

BEACH TRIP—If you missed it last time, another one is coming up next Thursday, the 25th (9:00am-4:00pm) But if you came before, you can still join and once again, experience this summer fun. Remember, you can bring the whole family!

Let us help peo-

ple in our community

who are in need of food. We are working to keep our supplies up to the need. If you have canned goods or any you want to pur-chase for our food pantry please bring them to the church. We especially need canned fruits and meat! Our deacons Miriam & Miguel Gutierrez are head-ing this drive. THANKS!

This is our region’s Annual Meeting.

Juanita Crosby, beloved mother of

Charles Crosby passed away on July 2,

2013. Our love and prayers goes with

Charles, Cindy and the rest of the family.

VBS COLLABORATION

NEAR AND ABROAD

Our church has donated many of its VBS supplies to our friends at the Armenian

Evangelical Brethren Church in Glendale. They will be doing Kingdom

Rock as well this year, July 22-26! We donated the rest of our VBS supplies to Pastor Caroline in South Africa. FBCG’s

VBS impact will also be reaching the Philippines. Inspired by what they had witnessed here, in November, Fancy

Nuque with Ed, her husband will be hav-ing their own “Community Block Party” in their hometown in the Philippines. In fact they will be using some of the game

materials we had used.

Our VBS is touching lives all

across the world!

GYM FLOOR SHINES

ANEW

As you can noticed our

gym was closed on the

first week of this month

for a much needed refin-

ishing work. This maintenance job needs to

be done from time to time to keep our gym

usable for a long, long time.

FBCG IS GUEST CHEF @ ASCENCIA

NEXT THURSDAY, JULY 25th
