HASA NEWS

The Hearing and Speech Agency celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2016. As our founding date approaches on November 19, we look at how far we’ve come in our 90 years in Baltimore.

Founded November 19, 1926 by Dr. Olive A. Whildin, The Speech Reader’s League of Baltimore first met with just 15 members in the Alumni Room of the Maryland Institute. The organization would go through two more name changes before becoming The Hearing and Speech Agency of Metropolitan Baltimore in 1966. HASA was also housed in eight locations before settling into its current home at 5900 Metro Drive in 2003.

In the nine decades since, HASA has made strides into the future with its inauguration of Gateway School and its Speech-Language program in 1960, along with the launch of CIRS Interpreting in 1986. Now in the 21st century, the use of technology has become more prevalent and more necessary as we find new and better ways to improve lives through communication.

Most recently, HASA took a step in improving its accessibility through technology with a new mobile-friendly website. Now you can check us out just as easily on your phone! Now you can access HASA’s services anywhere with a touch of a button. With our updated site you can make appointments, schedule school tours, sign up to volunteer, and more! In fact, one of the great aspects of our mobile-optimization is better access to our new blog, which

celebrates all types of communication. This blog is part of HASA’s launch into technological savviness, along with its HASA Facts campaign on social media and new Instagram account, and updated interactive elements on its site, all within the last year. To check out what HASA is up to, visit our social media sites or subscribe to our email newsletter at www.hasa.org.
