The most widely accepted definition of good health is that of the World Health

Organization Constitution. It states that "health is a state of complete physical, mental

and social well-eing and not merely the asence of disease or infirmity" !World Health

Organization, #$%&. In more recent years, this statement has een amplified to include

the aility to lead a "socially and economically producti'e life". The WHO definition is

not without criticism, mainly that it is too road. (ome argue that health cannot e

defined as a state at all, ut must e seen as a process of continuous ad)ustment to the

changing demands of li'ing and of the changing meanings we gi'e to life. It is a dynamic

concept. the WHO definition is therefore considered y many as an idealistic goal rather

than a realistic proposition. *sing the WHO definition, +-# of people are classified as

unhealthy. In spite of the ao'e limitations, the concept of health as defined y WHO is

road and positi'e in its implications. It sets out a high standard for positi'e health. It

represents the o'erall goal that nations should stri'e to reach.

The most solid aspects of wellness that fit firmly in the realm of medicine are the

en'ironmental health, nutrition, disease pre'ention, and pulic health matters that can e

in'estigated and assist in measuring well-eing.

    Selected nutrition article

1 healthy dietis a dietwhich contains a alanced amount of nutrients, 'aried food, and

minimal amounts of sugar, fat, and salt. Healthy eatingis identical to a healthy diet, in

that it relates to the practice of food inta3e for healthy li'ing. 8o'ernments often use this

term to refer to the ideal diet which the a'erage person re0uires to remain healthy.

    Healthy diet

=espite popular elief, a reliance on a single food which composes the ma)ority of a diet

is indicati'e of poor eating haits. 1n indi'idual on such a diet may e prone to

deficiency and most certainly will not e fulfilling the >ecommended ?utrient Inta3e.

While plants, 'egetales, and fruits are 3nown to help reduce the incidence of chronic

disease@A, the enefits on health posed y plant-ased foods, as well as the percentage on

which a diet needs to e plant-ased in order to ha'e health enefits, is un3nown.

?e'ertheless, plant-ased food diets in society and etween nutritionist circles are lin3ed

to health andlonge'ity, as well as contriuting to lowering cholesterol, weight loss, and,

in some cases, stress reduction. @9A

1lthough a numer of preconceptions of a healthy diet center around plant-ased foods,

the ma)ority of assumptions aout foods which are usually thought of as "ad" foods are

usually correct, apart from the assumption that there are "ad" foodsB many people

associate dishes such as 5ull ;nglish coo3ed rea3fastand acon (andwiches as foods

which if eaten regularly can contriute to cholesterol, fat, and heart prolems.

    Definition

1 healthy diet is usually defined as a dietin which nutrient inta3e is maintained, and

cholesterol, salt, sugar, and fatare reduced. The idea of a healthy diet is something used

y a go'ernment to ensure that people are as well "protected" against common illnesses

and conditions which stem from poor diet. This could include headaches, lessened se6ual

    dri'e, heart disease,alcohol poisoning, or oesity.@:A

The definition of a healthy diet is sometimes also thought of as a diet which will comat

or pre'ent illness. 1lthough the ma)ority of people would support this definition, few

3now why other than ecause "ad" foods are not consumed. /eople with healthy diets

are less li3ely to succum to common minor illnesses, such as lesser forms of Influenza,

mainly ecause consumption of a healthy diet would pro'ide ample nutrients and energy

for the ody, so as to help sta'e off such illnesses. (imilarly, the healthy diet can also e

used this way to aid the ody during illness. The myth of "feed a cold, star'e a fe'er" is a

common misconception among the pulic, particularly in the *nited Dingdom. This is a

myth in e'ery sense of the word ecause pro'iding the ody with nutrients during illness

is actually eneficial - nutrient and energy stores would e replenished, allowing for more

energy to e used y the ody to comat illness.

The importance at present of a Healthy diet is something which is actually recei'ing

many promotions throughout se'eral countries due to oesity epidemics. 8o'ernments,

particularly in the *nited Dingdom, through the ad'ice of the =epartment of Health,

introduced a pulic health white paper to parliament, CM 6374, which aimed to deal with

the issues presented y particularly imported culture - cigarettes, alcohol and fast food all

eing produced in their ma)ority in the *nited (tates, or y *(-ased companies.@$A
