Dear Newsletter,

Local Medical Provision

I have to take issue with the whinger who didn't even have thecourtesy to provide a name! In recent years I have had ankleproblems - I was seen by the physio at the Group Practice, referred to the Podiatry unit in Lynn, and sorted very quicklyand efficiently. In fact they spotted the cause of the problemstraight away; my sister in Bradford had the same problem, andshe had to tell them what I told her about my problem for themto sort it.

Whenever I have needed an appointment at short notice, I havebeen told I would be fitted in and telephoned when - samemorning every time.

I have regular check ups at QEH. Yes, the bug is a problem, butthey are tackling it. Again, an excellent service every time. Thehospital is definitely not dirty. And as for the staff in Heachamand at QEH, I have never found them anything but pleasant, friendly and helpful. Perhaps they might just be reacting- under-standably- to a sour attitude on the part of a discontented patient?

OK, so in part due to the same stupid legislation that seems tohave caused the removal of that new bus stop on the A 149, welost an excellent dentist in Heacham. But we were given thechoice of dentists in Hunstanton or Snettisham. We certainlyhave no complaints on that score either.

We are very lucky in this area with the medical service we have, and I have just two things to say to the correspondent - firstly,if you are going to make such derogatory remarks about a goodservice, at least have the decency to identify yourself; andsecondly, if Whitehaven is so wonderful (let's not mentionrampant gunmen here!), why not move there?

Dear Newsletter

Local Medical Provision

I am an ‘old’ Heachamite – in every sense – with a kind sisterwho sends me the Newsletter, which I find excellent, and todayI received the July copy. I am prompted to write on reading theletter headed Local Medical Provision. At the end of a day’scoach outing, a 90 year old lady tripped on the steps of the coachin King’s Lynn and sustained a nasty flesh wound to her legneeding more than a little first aid. Our coach driver took us tothe Queen Elizabeth Hospital and I accompanied her and stayedwith her in A&E. Triage assessment was done promptly andshe was treated with the utmost courtesy at all times. We werenot kept waiting unduly long before she was seen by a doctorand then the wounded leg was treated by the staff nurse. Fromtime to time the courier came to see how we were doing. Ishould think we were not there more than 2 hours. Mind you,the large coach parked outside may have had something to dowith it! I had not known this lady before, but got to know heras we waited.

This is in sharp contrast to my husband’s experience in Bury St.Edmunds A&E, 4 months ago. Admitted as an emergency athalf past nine in the evening he was first seen by a doctor atmidnight. Scant treatment was given – they did not recognizehe had suffered a stroke because it was not typical. No courtesywas shown, no communication with us. He was finally taken toE.A.U. some seven hours later, where he did receive care.

I could only be thankful that it was not at a weekend.

* HeachamDear Newsletter,

Give Way To AmbulancesA very recent experience among previous ones of similar con-tent has prompted me to write the following:While in my vehicle at the traffic lights leaving Heacham, Iheard the Paramedic siren, immediately I tried identifyingwhether I was in its path and if I could move or not, I didn't needto as he came round on the other side of the road (no trafficpresent so wasn't a problem). He sat at the junction trying to goright, while 6 cars came through the lights towards Hunstanton,no one slowing or stopping to let him through. I sat there sofrustrated as every second counts when people are ill. Why don'tpeople think and where has courtesy gone?We have even been overtaken by other road users while pullingin to allow medical/fire vehicles through, which almost causedanother emergency. My message, as shared by many, is:We live where there are many elderly people and holidaymakers, medical services are regularly needed. Please beaware of what is around you while in your vehicle and moveto let emergency vehicles through when needed as youwould expect the world to stop (as we all would) if it wasyour relative or friend who needed urgent help or attention. For those who cannot see the blue lights flashing and hear the sirens, there are always regular bus services, as life is precious to us all.

Dear NewsletterTwinning Visit

I should like to express through the Newsletter my sincerethanks to all who contributed in any way to the undoubtedsuccess of the first full visit from our twin village, Criteuil-la-Magdeleine in south-west France, which took place from 15 to20 July. (See report elsewhere in this edition). The whole operation was meticulously planned and efficientlycarried out by an extremely hard-working and dedicated com-mittee, willingly and ably assisted by many other members andfriends. We were blessed with excellent weather throughout theweekend, apart from two short, sharp showers at a time whenwe were able to run for cover and which in no way detractedfrom the joyful atmosphere which prevailed throughout.I heard nothing but admiration for our village and praise for theorganization from beginning to end – in fact the words mostoften mentioned were ‘teamwork’ and ‘talent’, both of whichwere certainly in evidence in no small measure. It is enormously satisfying to me to have been able to introduceto Heacham what has proved to be such a worthwhile project, and I believe we may be justifiably proud of what has beenachieved so far in a relatively short time.We have received an invitation to pay our second visit to Francein October of next year, and we look forward with great enthu-siasm to this, and to the renewing of firm friendships alreadymade, amongst children and adults alike from both sides of theChannel. With my grateful thanks again to one and all.

* HunstantonDear Newsletter,Sponsored Walk Sandringham 2010 - in aid of Guide Dogs

The idea of completing a Sponsored Walk was suggested byPauline Holland, who is also the treasurer of the Kings Lynn andDistrict Guide Dogs Fund Raising Committee. The first event was in 2006, when about 15 people took part andraised £232.00, last year 30 entered and £600.00 was pledged. This year the walk takes place on Sunday 15th August at San-dringham Country Park (by the visitor's centre) starting at 11 am.There are 2 routes (blue or yellow trail) one or two miles. You canenter on the day for a donation or ask for a sponsorship form fromPauline on pha@talktalk telephone 01553-691030 or [email protected] 01485-535258..You do not even have to have a canine friend with you, just comealong and join in the fun.I have had my guide dog "Olivia" now for 7 months and she hasmade a real difference to my life, enabling me to be more inde-pendent and adventuresome. Guide Dogs have given me somuch, that I wish to raise as much money as I can so thatsome-one else can benefit from a guide dog too. If you couldsponsor "Olivia" and I (Cynthia) your Hunstanton Guide DogPartnership we would be very grateful. Each dog costs £49800.00 to train and care for it during its'life-time, so events like this and Street Collections are a vital wayof raising much needed cash for the charity. We are very grateful to "Sunnyside" vets of Hunstanton andRoydon for sponsoring the costs of many of our stall hire this yearand for their support in other ways and to "Pouchcorner DTC".Further details of events, sponsorship of a puppy etc. or how youcan help us can be obtained from our "Chair" Gillian Southgateon 01553-671865.

* FensideDear Newsletter,Thank you to all who supported us on our sponsored walk for

Alzheimer's.We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us on our walkfrom Wells to Heacham. We walked for 6 hours on the first daybefore stopping for the day and finding our camp site. We had agood rest and great fun in the creeks near Brancaster. On oursecond and last day we walked for 10 hours .We had to stop manytimes as it was so hot and the blisters started to appear. Somepeople on the way were very kind by stopping and talking aboutfamily or friends who had got or had Alzheimer's and poppingmoney in our tins.I (Trudy) am so proud of the girls Sarah Pollard, Ali Kellythorn,Zoe Yeung and Leah McAllister (all 13 years). It was very hot andtough going but whenever I asked if they would like to give in theanswer was made very clear to me - NO. These girls put everythinginto the walk, our legs ached and we nearly ran out of plasters tocover our blisters but they still kept going. On our second day westarted at 8am and reached Heacham North beach at 6pm.

So far we have raised just over £400 with a few more sponsors tocollect. So for all those people who have sponsored us we say avery big THANK YOU. We would like to say thank you to Zoe’smum for taking us to Wells to start our walk , to Ali's mum and nanfor bringing us a lovely picnic out for our first days lunch andSarah's dad for bringing the camping gear to us after his work. Mostof all I, Trudy, would like to say thanks to the girls for keeping megoing. I know I had a great time. If anyone would still like to donatesome money to this good cause you can contact us on 01485572934 or at 22 Fenside, Heacham. Thank you all.

Dear NewsletterA Heacham Welcome

As newcomers to Heacham we have found your monthly News-letter most helpful in getting to know the village. We havefound Heacham to be a clean, graffiti and vandalism free placewith a most friendly and welcoming population.

We have tried to become part of the village by joining organisa-tions and supporting local shops and causes; in return we havebeen made to feel most welcome.

As a sports enthusiast, I was attracted to the Social Club by thescreening of Sky Sports football. However, I have found thereto be much more on offer there. The club provides a wide rangeof sports and activities for a wide range of age groups.

Although we all like to win, I like the fact that they embrace allpeople, no matter how good or ordinary they are, at the sport inquestion and concentrate on participation for enjoyment’s sake.Add to this pleasant surroundings, beer at reasonable prices,Sunday lunches ‘to die for’ and a caring and pleasant member-ship and you can see why it’s called Heacham Social Charity!

Thank you Heacham for making us feel so welcome.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HEACHAM

This column is a little different to others Ihave written. I am going to include somebeliefs people have about the church, particularly the Church of England, and other

subjects that have been voiced to me. The origins of someare lost in time; some have elements of truth; none are thewhole truth.

The statements/questions are common enough:Ø The Church of England is one of the wealthiest institutions

in the countryØ The Church has lost millions over the last few yearsØ The church is always asking for moneyØ It would all be better if we had a traditional service (or

traditional music or …)Ø The Church will always be hereØ A person who commits suicide cannot be buried in a

churchyardØ You have to be married to have your child baptisedØ "I'm not good enough to go to church"Ø "I am a Christian; there is no need for church"Ø Getting married in church costs a fortuneØ Money is the root of all evilØ And a question: "What's the difference between a

christening and a baptism?"Ø Finally, "I wish the Vicar would not dye his hair"

I cannot look at all these areas now; I can say that none ofthem are completely true.

I know that using the pages of The Newsletter is a veryinefficient way of holding a conversation although if there isinterest I will be happy to write about any of the above. Ifanyone wants to have an informal chat about any of theabove, or other topics, feel free to join me at the Fox andHounds in Heacham on Monday 16 or Monday 23 August.I will be there from about 7pm.

As this is a holiday month let me give you a little story:Three small boys are talking in the playground.First boy: "My dad's better than your dad, because my dad isa Doctor - he makes me better for nothing!"Second boy: "No, my dad's better than your dad, because mydad is a Teacher - he makes me clever for nothing!"Third boy: "That's nothing! My dad's better than your dad, because my dad is a Vicar - he makes me good for nothing!"

If you are on holiday this month I hope and pray it is a timeof relaxation and refreshment, genuine re-creation.

On the last Sunday in August, 29th at 3.30pm, there will bea Songs of Praise at St Mary's. There will be some"traditional" hymns; there will be some more modern songsof worship to sing together outside (weather permitting) andshare in refreshment afterwards. With my love and prayers,

ps: the Vicar does not dye his hair; never has and would notsee any reason for doing so in the future.

£699 FOR CHANGING FACESDear Friends,I'm just writing a letter to say a very big thank you to everyonewho helped in making our last open garden event yet anothersuccess. I'm hoping that I can remember everyone's names whowere concerned as there were so many people who gave sogenerously in many ways once again this year. If I've missedanybody out I must sincerely apologize as it's one of those thingswhere I'm bound to make a genuine mistake!Firstly I'd like to thank Stephanie Smeaton of Kenwood Road andDavid Beeton of Le Strange Cottages for opening their gardensalong with the wonderful help from Martin and Pat Barrow. Thepreparation and the organising of things like this take a whole lotof work and I am truly grateful to you all for the hard work thatyou put into this event.Meanwhile here in The Drift we had the magnificent help of RoyCarter, Ann McGowan, Christine Wallace, Michael Bennett, Jean& David Worrell, Gwen Bird and of course Joanne. I don't knowhow we would have managed without all of these people and Ican't express enough words of thanks to all of you for what youdid. I must also just mention that we had some beautiful cakes forrefreshments that were provided by the two Jeans and also Caro-line. Thank you all very much for what you did too.Several donations of money, plants and bric-a-brac came fromvarious people within the village and we really appreciated thiswonderful support from all of you too. I never cease to beamazed by everyone's kindness and I know the charity have beenin absolute awe of the support from all of our very dear friendshere in Heacham.I would especially like to thank the ladies of Coffee & Crumbsfor the generous donation of £50 which has been collected fromtheir monthly Friday coffee morning at the Church Hall. This hasbeen added along with another £50 donation that was given to mefor a talk I did at Downham Market Town Hall for U3A. And justas a last mention, I'd like to say thank you to everyone at theHeacham Newsletter team for all you've done over these last fewyears in advertising our open gardens, Without you this wouldn'thave been as successful as it was!We sent a cheque off to the charity a few days later for the totalsum of £699.38 from all the gardens and various other moniesthat had been raised. I know that this donation will be used verycarefully in helping those people who are less fortunate thanourselves in coping with the problems associated with disfigure-ment.With our kind thoughts and very best wishes

Heacham Group Practice AppointmentsOur current appointment system allows for the following:If the matter is urgent you can be seen by the Day Duty Doctoron the day.For all routine GP appointments you can book a month inadvance and on each day we release a number of appointmentson the day, which provides patients with an opportunity ofchoice to which GP they can see. The majority of these appoint-ments are booked via the telephone when the appointments arereleased at 8.30 a.m. on the day. These appointments tend to govery quickly. We do not want to encourage our patients to turn up at the maindoors in the hope of seeing a particular GP only to be disap-pointed that the appointments have already gone by the timethey reach our reception or to discover the GP that they want tosee is not in clinic that day. We can appreciate that this is veryfrustrating and time wasting for all concerned. As the result of this and in conjunction with our GP surveyresults we will be modifying our appointment system. As from September 1st patients who wish to queue at thePractice doors will be offered the Day Duty Doctor only and theavailability of pre booking all routine appointments.Patients contacting the Practice by telephone will be able tobook the limited appointments that are released on the day.We do listen to our patient’s feedback and will continue tomodify our appointment system to try and meet our patientneeds. We do guarantee that if the matter is urgent you will be seen onthe day. Coffee Morning Enjoyed By AllHeacham resident Yvonne Gillett organised a Coffee Morningat St. Mary's Church Hall in July to raise vital funds for TheNorfolk Hospice, Tapping House.Yvonne, a part time Deputy Manager and volunteer at theHospice shop in Snettisham said "This is the first coffeemorning I have organised and I would like to thank everyone fortheir help especially the volunteer helpers, cake makers, thecraft stall owners for their support and Wallis's for coming tothe rescue with the loan of a microwave when the one in the Halldecided not to work!"The tombola and bric-a-brac stalls were popular and werecomplemented by craft stands selling jewellery, bags, scarves, jams and greetings cards.Yvonne said, "I enjoyed organising the event and have learnt alot. It was a very hot day and therefore the High Street was alittle quieter than anticipated. However we raised £155 for TheNorfolk Hospice which I know will be very gratefully received."Anyone who would like to organise a fundraising event in aidof The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House should contact ZenaPenty on 01485 542891.

New Carers' Café at The Norfolk HospiceThe role of spouses, partners or children, known collectively asCarers, is crucial to the welfare of our patients and the Hospicetries to support them by providing advice on such matters asrespite care, benefits and other financial matters. Information isprovided on the work of specialist services and the variousorganisations for those suffering from life limiting conditions.

A number of these organisations were represented at the Carers'Event last month when David Gorringe, The Hospice Chef andhis team provided Carers with a splendid lunch in the newlycompleted Hugh Ford Pavilion. This Pavilion has been recentlyconstructed in the grounds of the present Hospice from grantfunds and can be moved to the new Hospice in the future.Among the exhibitors were two firms who deliver ready mealson a weekly or fortnightly basis which many will find a usefulservice. At the end of the event our staff provided Carers withan information pack tailored to their specific needs. In September, a drop-in facility, called the Carers' Café, willoperate on a regular day, once a month so that Carers can comefor mutual support. The first one will be held on September15th. Further details are available from The Norfolk Hospice01485 543163.

Hopeyou are up and about soon Hazel. Also for the evening we all made a corsage to wear followingthe ruby theme and judged by David. 1st was Sue Bird and 2ndwas Alayne Seymour. Station Road, HeachamTel: 01485 570345

FOX & HOUNDS ALE WINS AWARDOne of the regular brews which is produced by the Fox Breweryin Heacham is “Grizzly Beer”. This is a light wheat beer madewith honey and American Cascade hops. This popular brew, made to the Fox Brewery’s own recipe, is as refreshing on a hotsummer’s day as it is warming on a winter one (I speak fromexperience). The really good news is that it has recently wonCAMRA’s Champion Speciality Beer of East Anglia award for2009.By the time you read this it will have appeared as one of thefinalists at The Great British Beer Festival which was held atEarl’s Court from 3rd-7th August. If you want to find out howGrizzly Beer fared in the festival you can either wait until theSeptember Newsletter or drop in at the Fox & Hounds and ask.If you are lucky Grizzly Beer might be available on tap (no

guarantee though, as the selection of Fox and guest beers variesfrom day to day).If you missed the 10th Annual Beerfest at the Fox & Hounds atthe end of July, there is another opportunity to sample a widerange of beers over the August Bank Holiday weekend at theBlues ‘n’ Booze celebration. The good beer and food isavailable all weekend and the music starts on Friday evening, continuing until Monday lunchtime. The bands playing will beTony Edwards, DNA and Tipitina. Tipitina will be giving twoperformances, one on Sunday evening and then the second onMonday lunchtime - a perfect chance to relax over lunch to thesound of the blues with Justin playing tributes to the jazz andblues piano greats and accompanying Debbie’s soulful voice onnumbers such as Trouble In Mind and Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Would You Like To Have More Confidence?I see clients for a variety of different issues but there isundoubtedly a common denominator in confidence. Confidenceis something that everyone recognises as an important thing tohave and yet no one ever seems to teach us how to get it. If Iknow one thing to be true it is this: confidence is a skill that youlearn. It is not something that we are born with or without.

There are many different elements to building confidence butfor the purpose of this article we will focus on just two. Let'sstart with the future. Our imagination is an incredibly powerfultool and yet its energy is almost exclusively channelled intoimagining things going wrong! This has two effects. It makesus feel bad and lack confidence going into the event and like aself fulfilling prophecy seems to make us perform badly at theevent. If you are going to buy a house it can be useful to lookat all the possible pitfalls in order to guard against them. Thishas less of a place when imagining your future experiences.Imagine now, an event that is coming up in your future.Something you would like to perform well or be successful at.This time imagine going into the event feeling calm andconfident. As you imagine that, notice how much better you aredealing with the situation. Maybe you imagine a difficultsituation arising but somehow this time you just seem to take itall in your stride as though it was just part of the plan, youremain unaffected. As you begin to gain in confidence imaginehow the event will end with the outcome you wanted and noticehow much better you feel as a result. Easier than you thought?Just because something is effective doesn't mean it has to bedifficult.

It is also important how we view and explain what has alreadyhappened to us. Confident people add permanence to thesuccesses they experience. "I always seem to do well at jobinterviews" or "We never lose to this team." Their braintherefore assumes that success will continue. They are also ableto isolate bad experiences as a freak event or a one off. Forexample "I played badly today" rather than "I am a bad player."People that lack confidence tend to do the opposite. Take careto add permanence to your successes and isolate bad experiences.

If you would like any more information on how to buildconfidence please feel free to contact me at BrookhouseHypnotherapy (Norfolk) on 0845 603 4421 or email:[email protected]

ABRI DE JARDIN

GARDENING ORGANICALLY

Oh Adam was a gardener, and God who made him, sees thathalf a gardener’s proper work is done upon his knees. So whenyour work is finished, you can wash your hands and pray, forthe glory of the garden, that it may not pass away. Rudyard Kipling.

We are back in France for a couple of weeks and as thisnewsletter is due before we get home, I have to do it now. It’svery hot out here but as they have had a fair amount of rainrecently, everything is very lush and green. Unfortunately, theweeds have really taken hold and are rampaging all over theplace, so I will have to get out there and do some seriousweeding. I’ve already done a bit as we’ve been here for fourdays but the inclination to sit in the shade and drinkwine/beer/cocktails is very strong. And speaking of beer, in2003, I brought a case of excellent beer brewed by our own Foxbrewery out with me and Eileen and I drank a few bottles at thattime. Two years ago, I was cleaning out a ditch for the girls andgetting all hot and sweaty – as one does – I decided to try a glassof the foaming nectar. This was in 2008 and the best before dateon the beer was 2005. The bottles (there were still six left) wereall dusty and old looking but I took the top off, decanted a bottleof “Little John ….something or other” I forget the full name. Itfoamed a bit and when it had settled, I drank off a draught. Itwas absolutely delicious! Over the next couple of days I sam-pled another couple of bottles and, yum, they were just as good.

I wandered back into the barn yesterday and saw three morebottles of even more dusty beer. So I cracked another one. Thiswas “Red Knocker” and it still tasted lovely. So, the moral ofthis story is, don’t take any notice of “best before” dates as theFox brewery makes beer that stands the test of time. After all, wine improves with age so why shouldn’t beer.

When we left home everything was very dry and things werelooking rather sad in the flower beds. I’d been watering the vegso they were not too bad and, hopefully, my very good neigh-bours, and my brother, will keep them going. I did a franticpicking of broad beans - to which I’m addicted - for the freezerand also brought a bag full over with me (we had some lastnight, lovely) but the peas and runners are still coming. I did getone feed of dwarf French beans and am praying they will stillbe producing on our return. It’s not really a good time to go offon “Jollies” but I felt my Jill needed a break. She, and I, love itout here but as there is a strong possibility of the place beingsold fairly soon, we felt we had better whiz over here before welost the chance. So, although there is a mass of goosegrass andvarious other noxious weeds to get sorted, it’s lovely and coolin the house, I have a glass of cool Rosé wine, lunch is nearlyready, I shall almost certainly have a snooze after lunch andthen it may be cool enough to do some proper work. In themeantime, I will endeavour to type a little more of this article.

Just before we departed, I noticed that the tomatoes were ripen-ing fast. I gave them a feed of my noxious comfrey and wormjuice so they should be doing well. I grow a variety called BlackPlum which crops well and tastes marvellous. I’m hoping theywill still be cropping on our return and my “friends” won’t havescoffed the lot! The Brassicas were coming along well in the

cage, safe from marauding pigeons but I noticed the whiteflywas active. I hope the hoverflies will deal with them; otherwiseit will be daily watering with soft soap to keep them undercontrol.

The carrots in my boxes set high up above root fly activity levelare also doing well. The positioning was not good as the cedartree tends to overshadow them but the ones I have pulled so farhave been fly free and tasty.

BOTANY FOR BEGINNERS CHAPTER 7Plants can be propagated in two ways; vegetatively in whichcase the offspring are identical to the parent (cloning) or sexual-ly where male and female parts of plants give rise to offspringcarrying characteristics of both parents. Some hybrids can onlyreproduce by the former method and have lost the ability to setseed. Most of us have at some time taken cuttings of favouredplants and this is a common way of enlarging our stocks ofplants. Many plants appear to produce offspring vegetatively inaddition to sexual reproduction. Good examples are strawber-ries with their runners giving rise to new plantlets at nodes alongtheir length. Bulbs produce new bulblets between the scales ofthe parent. Bramble stems easily produce new roots where thestems touch the ground. However, all these clones are identicalto the parent plant and are not improving the species by naturalselection.

Sexual reproduction needs two parent plants of the same orsimilar species. The process of reproduction involves the pro-duction of male and female sexual structures in cones as in theGymnosperms (conifers and their relatives) or in flowers as inthe Angiosperms (flowering plants). The male structures arecalled Anthers which produce microspores called pollen. Thefemale part of flowering plants is called the ovule and consists

of a stigma onto which the pollen is deposited, supported by astyle or long tube like structure leading to the ovary wherefertilisation takes place. The pollen grain produces a long tubewhich grows down along the style until it reaches the ovary.

To help prevent inbreeding many plants have inbuilt incompat-ibility mechanisms. Cells on the stigma recognise specific pro-teins on the surface of the pollen and fertilisation is aborted. We,of course, mess about with these mechanisms and produce selffertile apple trees and other fruits and flowers. We are also viagenetic engineering, producing plants containing genetic mate-rial from “foreign” plants and even animals. Where this willeventually lead, one can only postulate. However, genetic engi-neering has given us human insulin produced by bacteria andperhaps, as long as greed does not intrude to too great an extent, these techniques may lead on to good outcomes.

So, how does the pollen get from one plant to another? In thecase of the Gymnosperms and the grasses, this is by the wind.We have all seen clouds of pollen being blown from a grassyfield and tapped a mature fir cone to see the pollen released –well I hope we have! Flowers are different. They rely on acombination of scent and colour to attract pollinating insects.Even “white” flowers have different colours that we cannot seebut insects can, generally in the ultraviolet. Some plants whichdepend on moths for pollination only release their perfume atnight (night scented stocks, evening primrose) to attract theseinsects. Whilst we think of bees as pollinators, many otherinsects like moths and flies are also important.

I think I had better stop there. I hope some of you have had yourappetite for more information whetted. I didn’t much like Bota-ny at school, oh so many years ago, but doing these articles hasshown me how much I missed. The internet has so muchinformation on the subject that I hope some of you will have alittle browse. It really can help your gardening skills.

NEWS FROM HEACHAM INFANT AND

NURSERY SCHOOL

“Together we explore, discover, achieve andgrow”

We are now at the end of term and have been very busy atschool. The children have enjoyed the warm weather and havebeen able to do lots of their curriculum learning outdoors. Hereare some of the highlights of our achievements this term.Art weekWe finished our art week at the end of June and had looked atart around our environment. The children drew the trees, flow-ers and plants and made large-scale colourful images on theplayground. Children in Y2 made hanging dream catchers in-spired by Kandinsky’s circles painting. Our artwork was exhib-ited at Sedgeford Village Hall alongside other schools’ art aspart of a grant given by NADFAS. Thanks to them for continu-ing to sponsor artwork in local schools. Several of our childrenwere awarded first prize certificates by the borough mayor;Chloe George for her spiral picture made on the computer, ScottStephenson for his bark line drawing, Ryan Woods for a portraitmade with fruit, Sophie Furmer for her observational drawingof grass and Jared Link for his abstract image of circles. Welldone to them, their artwork will now be displayed in our schoolhall next term. Please make an appointment next term if youwould like a viewing!School feteThanks to the staff and the PTA for a successful fete on 5th July. The school made over £600 and were able to enjoy a variety ofstalls and activities. We had pony rides, penalty shoot out, afabulous and tempting cake stall, candy floss and tea cup rides,a BBQ, treasure hunt, hook the duck, name the teddy and a Judoand country dancing display. Our school council gained valua-ble business experience planning and organising games to raisemoney for the school. One of the evening’s highlights waspresenting special trophies to two of our pupils; the RichardsonCaring cup was presented to Daisymai Bridges in Y2 for help-ing others and the Talented Art cup was awarded to HannahBack in Y1 for her outstanding art. Thanks to Moulam and Hornand West Norfolk Butchers for donating supplies and to you allfor contributing to an enjoyable event. (We still have an un-claimed cash prize from the 50/50 raffle so if you have a greenticket at home, pop into school to see if you are the winner. Ifthe prize remains unclaimed by next term we will donate it to alocal charity).School days articleIn July we teamed up with Heacham Juniors and invited theLynn News to visit our village schools. This gave us an oppor-tunity to show the wider community the broad range of activi-ties and experiences we offer to our pupils. We had a two-pagespread detailing our aims and showing great pictures of some ofour pupils in action through the Primary age range. If you didn’tsee the article, we have a copy in our notice board on SchoolRoad.

School TripsWe have had a rush of end of year trips to complement ourcurriculum learning. Our Reception children visited the Butter-fly Park in Long Sutton, Year One children went to Norwich tosee art in the Sainsbury Centre, Year Two made pizzas in KingsLynn and Nursery bravely crossed the A149 to Norfolk Laven-der to visit the rare animals and walk around the gardens. Ahuge thanks to them and to PCSO Linsell who helped us travel

safely. I would encourage you all to visit Norfolk Lavender asthe facilities are now excellent and we all had a great time.Year Two LeaversAnd finally, all too soon, we have to say goodbye to our Y2children. The children presented ideas for their future aspira-tions to the audience, sang songs and were presented with asketch book, chalk pastels and art pencils by the school toremind them to do something special as they grow up. TheRotary club asked us if there were two pupils leaving who hadcontributed to our community and so Scott Stephenson andOliver Shaw were awarded Citizenship prizes of £25 each. Ourchildren will all be good citizens but Scott and Oliver werechosen for their activities and achievements in clubs in the localcommunity.Well done and we wish you all lots of happiness.

Yellow fields, Ringstead

With the fields in West Norfolk looking so glorious - undulat-ing, in colours of burnt umber, emerald green and vibrantyellow - it is to these that I have turned my attention this year.Field compositions in oil and watercolour will be on displayalong with pigs, cows and sheep, coastal scenes and a selectionof other paintings - all with a pastoral English theme.

Another month of lovely weather, even though the winds havebeen very strong. Lots of plastic bottles and cartons washed upon the tide line.

I'd like to thank those that regularly have a bag handy whenwalking the shoreline and the promenade.

1 wish that those dog walkers who fail to pick up their dogsmess, were as considerate.

The Heacham In Bloom team have improved the North Beachdisplays and we were pleased to make a donation for workcarried out at the South Beach.

A lot of visitors use the South Beach, but they are treated as asecond class area.

The toilets, all four of them, are insufficient to deal with theamount of visitors.

Sorry to have a moan, but our beaches are so popular andnatural, we want everyone who visits, to go away happy, vow-ing to return.

The first full visit to Heacham by friends from our twin villagein the south-west of France has been deemed a huge success byall concerned.Well over fifty French people, including approximately twentychildren and young people, from Criteuil-la-Magdeleine andneighbouring villages were met at Stansted Airport and broughtby coach to Heacham, arriving at teatime on Thursday 15 July. After a buffet reception at the Church Hall, kindly provided byMrs Fran Goodwin, the travellers were taken to the homes oftheir various hosts for a quiet evening and an early night! On the following day, Friday, the visitors were taken by car intoKing’s Lynn, where the Borough Mayor, Councillor Mrs ZiphaChristopher, welcomed them to West Norfolk at the Town Hall. This was followed by a guided tour around the historic towncentre and a shopping spree! The group then proceeded toSandringham for a picnic in the grounds, and some guests wereable to visit Her Majesty’s House. A most enjoyable barbecuewas held in the evening at Marea Farm, courtesy of the Dixfamily. On Saturday, our guests met at Norfolk Lavender, where MrsRoisin Wellard had arranged for them to be shown the lavenderdistillation process and the Rare Breeds Centre. Many membersthen enjoyed a tour of some of the village’s most notablebuildings, accompanied by Mr David Mackay, with Mrs JanetBarrow as interpreter. A drinks party at the home of Mr andMrs Jeremy Gullan-Whur and refreshments by invitation of MrMaurice and Miss Amanda Hughes were followed by a plasticduck race along the river bordering their home – this was wonby Mrs Marilyn Johnson with duck no. 64.Saturday evening saw over a hundred French and Englishfriends enjoying a full meal at the Public Hall during which MrSimon Bower played background music on the piano. This wasfollowed by a speech of welcome by Mr Roger Drinkwater,Chairman of Heacham Parish Council. Replying, the Mayor ofCriteuil-la-Magdeleine, Monsieur Michel Fougère, presentedthe association with a delightful framed collage showing scenesof his village. The Chairman of the Heacham Twinning Asso-ciation, Mr John Harris, expressed his grateful thanks to all whohad worked so hard to ensure the success of the weekend, andhis French opposite number, Mrs Sally Brimblecombe, replied, also thanking all concerned and saying how much her memberswere enjoying their stay. Entertainment was provided by Méli-Mélo, a quintet of singers from among the French group, withpiano items by Caroline Dix and the French Mayor, and Frenchsongs by Sophie Daniels, who was joined by some of the Frenchchildren. Mr Michael Williamson acted as M.C. for the evening

REGISTER OF ELECTORSThe annual canvass for the Register of Electors begins at the endof August, when a form and reply paid return envelope will bepersonally delivered to every property in West Norfolk.Completion and return of the form is both obligatory andimportant because the Register is used not just for electoralpurposes but also by many financial service providers dealingwith, for example, mortgages, loans or new accounts. Anyonewhose name is not on the Register will not only be unable tovote at the coming Borough/Parish Council Elections but willalso be likely to have problems using any service that involvesa check of the Register.

The form is intended for the present occupiers of an address. The name of anyone expected to be resident at the address on15th October and who is already 18, or will reach that age by30th November 2011, needs to be on the form and the names ofanyone no longer at the address crossed out.

Forms received by owners of properties which are either alreadyempty or are expected to be so on 15th October simply need the"Property empty on 15th October" box ticking and returning. This will avoid the issue of reminders.

A REPLY IS STILL NEEDED IF THE ADDRESS ON THEFORM IS A SECOND HOME OR HOLIDAY LET

Second home owners may register if at least 3 months of theyear in total is spent at the second home. This would give aright to vote in local elections (possibly by a postal vote),although at national elections only one vote would be availableand a choice of areas to cast it would need to be made. Ifresidence is for less than 3 months, if a person does not wish to

register in West Norfolk as a second home owner, or if aproperty is used solely for holiday letting, the "Other reason"box can be ticked, "Not eligible" written beside it and the formreturned.

In the event of any queries when the form arrives, householderscan telephone 01553 616773 and any of the electoral staff willbe glad to help.

Early return of the form or, better still, confirmation byfreephone, internet (if you have a Community Information Pointin your village a terminal is available there) or text message(details on the form) will avoid the need for reminders and helpto keep costs down.

The last minute finishing off and frantic watering meant that wewere as ready as we could be for the Judges' visit on 12 July.We will find out on 15 September if we have managed to holdon to Silver or gone one better. It has been a huge team effortand I am especially proud of our achievements at South Beach,Lavender Junction and Redgate Junction, which we willcontinue to develop. THE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGEJune 24th To June 27th 2010

A team of local adventurers successfully attempted the 3 PeakChallenge of climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. The team were raising money for the residents of Fridhem RestHome entertainment fund in Heacham. The event was the ideaof Marie Rawnsley who is the activities co-ordinator at thehome. The team comprised of staff and family members. Therewere 5 walkers: Dean Rawnsley, Luke Rawnsley, Jo Prosper,Angela Bailey and Ralph Garwood. To look after them was ateam of supporters who were, Marie Rawnsley, Lesley Gar-wood, Nikki Huggett, Helen Marshall and Andrew Marshall.Arriving at Ben Nevis at midnight on the 24th the team begantheir ascent at 0:45 reaching the summit climbing the 1344metres (4407 feet in old money) 4 hours later. Sadly cloudsdescended shrouding the top in mist so no spectacular viewsthough there was still some snow to negotiate! They returned tothe bottom 8:30 to some welcoming bacon and sausage sand-wiches and a hot drink. Then it was into the mini bus and off toScafell in Cumbria.Due to heavy traffic the arrival at Wasdale Head was later thanexpected and the 937 metre (3210 feet) of the steep Scafell pathbegan at 17:00. Thankfully the weather was lovely and hot andthe views as the walk went higher were truly stunning. Whilethe support team went to the pub for a well earned meal thewalkers reached the summit after a three hour trek. There wasno cloud and the scenery was great. The team was back down at22:00 and as luck would have it the pub was not serving food sothe support team broke out the soup, tea, fruit cake, which wasvery much appreciated. Then it was into the mini bus again fora drive through the night to Llanberis and the foot of Snowdon.Arriving in Llanberis at 04:30 the team prepared for their lastwalk up the 1085 metres (3557 feet) of Snowdon. Departing at06:30 the team tackled the awesome steep path at the start of thewalk and began their last ascent with tired legs and aching limbsbut a good spirit knowing this was the last one. Despite theirhours crammed in the mini bus and having completed twomountains already the top was reached in record time of two anda half hours! So success!! All 3 completed in a total climbing time of 18hours. The team retired to the hotel for a shower and rest beforegoing to Pete's Eats for a well deserved nosh up!!Everyone went up and came down safely and uninjured thoughit was strenuous the sense of achievement was shared by thewhole team. The team would like to say a warm Thank you to all those localcompanies who provided drinks, food, fruit, and chocolate. Also a heartfelt Thanks to those individuals who sponsored theteam enabling them to raise over £1000 for the residents.

The under 12's for their first year did well, finishing midtable, which considering that for many it was their first exposureto the hard ball game was a great credit to them. The Under 16'shad a more difficult time where they had to play with less

experienced players in the main, against teams which consistedof lads who were also playing for adult sides. However theypersisted and I believe enjoyed the experience, and mostimportantly they played the game in the right spirit. Theexperiment of "sharing" teams with Snettisham has I believeproved successful, in that we have continued with our aim ofinvolving as many young players as we can in the great game. Iam certain that more have had exposure, due to the sharing, thanif we had tried to maintain a Heacham only squad.

Training continues for the under 12's every Wednesday from16.30 and for the adults 18.00 onwards.

The remaining Home fixtures for Adults are shown below:

Adults 7th August 2nd XI vs Northwold 2nd XI 14th August 1st XI vs Castle Acre 21st August 2nd XI vs Beeston 28th August 1st XI vs Thornham

The Saturday morning Kwik Cricket drop in sessions, held atthe playing field will continue during the summer until 28thAugust, between 10.30 and 12.00. The sessions are open to all, normally for youngsters ages seven years and upwards.
