‘Another Night at the Theatre’Due to a family holiday, David and I were unable to booktickets for ‘Another night at the Theatre’, so imagine our sur-prise when we were asked to sit in on their full dress rehearsal.

We were able to see the new backdrops that have been boughtwith the money they received from a grant which must makelife so much easier for the scenery changes. It all gets veryhectic backstage, which during a performance you are com-pletely unaware of. Once again the costumes are amazing and Iwas left wondering how they manage with all the crampedconditions behind the stage. This can only be due to the profes-sionalism of everyone concerned. This is so obvious watchingthe dance routines, which are sharp and crisp, the singing hasgone to a whole new level and this can only be due to the factthat they practise and keep practising until they get it right.Well done to everyone, for the many hours you put in.

* Boston, LincsDear Newsletter,

Congratulations!Congratulations to the Pocahontas Players for their recent showof ‘Another Night at the Theatre’.It certainly wasn’t  just another night, it was a fabulous night. We saw the Friday night performance, and I have to say it wasexcellent.  We are regular visitors to Heacham, and had heardthat the Pocahontas Players were good, so we purchased  sometickets well in advance.  Never having been to see them beforewe assumed that, because the tickets were numbered, our seatswere numbered.   We arrived about 20 minutes early to take upour seats, only to find the hall packed out and hardly a seat leftin the place!!  They certainly are popular. We did manage to find two seats together, and waited in antici-pation for the show to start.  We were not disappointed.  Thefirst half was extracts from Mary Poppins, and excellent thoughit was, the highlight for me was the second half ‘The LionKing’.  The acting of the animals was very realistic and whoev-er made the costumes deserves a medal, they where brilliant, theanimal heads outstanding.Well done everyone who  contributed, your joint efforts pro-duced an excellent production.  We certainly left at the end ofthe evening saying  a very big “Wow”. There is no doubt wewill be coming to see you again in the future.

***************** ReephamDear Newsletter,

‘Another Night at the Theatre’I would like, through your magazine, to thank the PocahontasPlayers for a very enjoyable entertaining afternoon on Saturday26th May. All 10 passengers on the Reepham Rover were veryimpressed with the show; for some it was the first time they hadbeen to see a performance by the Pocahontas Players so theywere amazed at the standard. In fact they all wanted to know ifI would be going to the pantomime as they would like to cometo see it. Hopefully we will all be there if I pass my medical inSeptember so I can continue to drive the Rover.

Well done everyone.Jeannette Overton

* Old Bakery CourtDear Newsletter,

The power of a Daily NewspaperA few weeks ago our postman knocked on our door and hand-ing me a letter asked if I thought it might be for me. It had myname, no address and then Heacham.I had had a letter published in the Daily Mail a few weeks priorto me receiving this letter, which turned out to be from a lady Ihad never met or heard of who is now living in Stratford onAvon. On seeing Heacham at the bottom of my letter shedecided to write and ask me about the village as it is now andasked if I knew what had happened to the family she worked forin the 1950's. She had worked for Mr and Mrs Callaby at theirstud and riding school at Caley Farm.I rang Robert Callaby and, although he was a child at the time, hedoes remember her. He was able to give me some informationwhich I was able to pass on. I have since received some oldphotographs and a cutting from the EDP dated 1955 and, al-though I have lived in Heacham 27 years, I have no knowledgeof the history of Caley Farm and just how important it once was.I find it incredible that due to a lady I don’t know, but am nowcorresponding with, I am, when I meet up with Robert, going tolearn a lot more.

An Incinerator for Heacham?During my frequent trips between Kings Lynn and Heacham Iread many notices saying ‘Farmers Against the Incinerator’ orwords to that effect. Farmers taking a stand against somethingthey perceive to threaten them and the land they hold in trust.I have never read any notices saying ‘Farmers for BuildingSites’. However, that seems to be the case as a great swathe ofHeacham farmland is being considered for re-designation asbuilding land.I presume such a change will benefit the cartel of farmers andlandowners hugely. I cannot see it benefiting many other peopleor the land the owners should be caring for.Why ‘incinerator’ in the title? Two possible explanations: Theland will be effectively burnt if built upon; there is no way to getit back. One of the developers rushing to acquire space appar-ently wants to fill it with as many aging people as it can (I amaging by the way so this is not ageist). Think about it.If you do not want the rather greedy plans of landowners anddevelopers to come to fruition object at every opportunity;developers sometimes take the easy path to where no-one does

Fowl Ducks on the Lawn at DawnI have always classed myself as a nature lover; that is until I metthat unique creature, “the Destructive Heacham Duck”. Unlikemost ducks it avoids ponds, rivers and streams. Actually, itshuns water altogether and prefers to squat in gardens forminggaggle gangs and terrorising folk for fun.Last year, my first in this blissfully quiet backwater, the urbanducks seemed cute and comical, if somewhat numerous. Darlingducklings trooped after mum, like foreign tourists in London, staying close to their guide for fear of getting lost-or fallingdown a grid; ducklings, not tourists that is. Trouble is, the fluffybundles grew and unlike tourists, they stayed put.By spring this year, I eagerly awaited “Beware Ducks” signs in thevillage or even expected a headline in the Lynn News equivalent tothe recent “P***ed off by Pigeons” article expressing exasperationat the amount of duck muck in Heacham. But nothing. More daintyducklings developed into raucous ruffians and by my reckoning, the expansion correlates directly with the decline in our beddingplant numbers. I will explain.January, being cold and wet; nothing new there then, we ordered60 geraniums described as rigorous growers and brightlycoloured. Little did they know they had competition in the formof equally rigorous and brightly coloured quackers. The reallynice thing about the plants was, we received another 60 free, everyone likes a bargain. In March our plantlings arrived. Tinybundles of green and so we cosseted them, fed them, kept themwarm and just like mummy duck took them out when the weatherturned marginally warmer. In May, we entrusted them to mother earth. Bad decision. Theysurvived 2 days. Day 3, we were woken at 5am by the contented, harmonious quacking of a huge brood of Heacham Ducks whowere resting on the front lawn, replete after an early breakfast at ourexpense. Ducks 120; Geraniums nil. My nearest and dearest, usually a gentle bird loving soul, saw red. Actually he saw brown, green and a bit of blue but the detail did not matter as he flew outdressed in little more than slippers and a dressing gown to chase thefeathered feasters away. Not content with their temporary retreatand certainly not convinced that they would not attempt a furtherforay, he duck proofed the borders in the best way he could. So ifyou wander past and wonder why there are rolls of wire weigheddown with bricks and sticks and why the garden looks like thebeach during the war it is because we are at war and have nointention of being defeated. We are prepared to defend our territory.Having discussed decoys, mused over machine guns and mines, talked trenches and waxed lyrical about wire, we will willinglyaccept any suggestions concerning de-ducking the garden. Ourtrusty duck dog does sterling work preventing landings at the backbut he can’t patrol two sensitive and vulnerable areas at one timeand I don’t relish early morning garden guard duties indefinitely.

Dear Newsletter,

1948 Olympic Torch Trail in Heacham

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone involved in thestaging and organising of the 1948 Torch Trail in Heacham, onSaturday 2nd June.

I was a torch bearer on the day, collecting the torch with fellowrunner Maureen Wolfe from the sports field, passing it over tothe first of the Hunstanton torch bearers towards the bottom ofRedgate Hill.

There was a real party feeling on the sports field as we left tothe sound of the ‘Chariots of Fire’ music, it was really kind ofeveryone who came out to watch us and cheer the torch alongon its way, it was great to see so many of my family and friendsamongst them.

I felt really privileged to be able to represent my village in thisway, and it was great to be able to get my hands on an original1948 Olympic torch for a while!

Finally I must thank Maureen for running at my slow pace andencouraging me every step of the way, all of those who kindlysponsored me ( raising over £100 for the Stroke Association ),and to my sister Emma who threw me out of her car in thepouring rain so I could practise one last time!

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HEACHAM

Greetings from the Manse,The London 2012 Olympics are almost ready to come underthe starter’s orders. The advertising tells us we are going to beinspired. I hope so. Will it be a memorable Olympic Games, unearthing new sporting heroes and a fair share of triumphsand disasters, successes and failures and big smiles and saltytears? Probably so, but for me two of the most memorableathletes of recent Games have been two of the most unsuccess-ful! Who can forget Eddie the Eagle and Eric the Eel! Eddie“The Eagle” Edwards was the British ski-jumper who finished56th out of 57 on the 70m hill at the 1988 Winter Olympics inCalgary (the 57th-placed man was disqualified). Eddie trainedin his backyard jumping off a table and before the games hehad broken his jaw on his “training” holiday on some snowypackage tour but finished his fortnight with a wired up jaw asit was his only opportunity to get some jumping time on snow. What a character! I’d have given him the gold! And then therewas Eric “The Eel” Moussambani, the swimmer fromEquatorial Guinea who took 1 minute 52.7 seconds to do the100 metres freestyle at the Sydney Games, and almostdrowned in the effort. Eric trained in his local river when thewild life were having their siesta and had never seen a swim-ming pool. I can still remember the good natured Aussiecrowd giving him great applause for his efforts and being a“fair dinkum” tryer.

Sadly we will never see their sort again. Since 2004International Olympic Committee (IOC) abolished the wildcard system, which allowed smaller, unsuccessful countries tosend athletes to compete even if they are well below thestandard required to qualify. This ended that quintessentialOlympic tradition, the hapless competitors who are, to say theleast, a bit average compared to the top athletes, yet theybecome heroes to millions around the world because peoplejust love them and are inspired by their spirit and determina-tion. Without wishing to appear offensive or patronising theestimable Para Olympic Games in some eyes offer much moreof the Olympic Ideal. The Olympic motto is, “Citius, altius, forties,” meaning “swifter, higher, stronger.” I fear this mottohas been applied to the commercialisation and marketing ofsport as much as, if not more than, the words of the founder ofthe modern Olympic movement, the man who coined thatmotto, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He also said, “The mostimportant thing in the Olympic Games is not winning buttaking part.” Today you could have fooled me! The ancientGreeks who gave the games to the world believed that in thecompetition of sport there was “glory for one but honour forall.” In contrast, in the world of today’s sport, new categoriesof events such as “make as much money and profit as you can”or “cheat as much as you can without being detected,” couldbecome recognised Olympic sports. Perhaps they already are.

I’m sad to say I am much less interested in sport than I wouldever have thought possible. I am someone who has played andenjoyed all kinds of sports over the years, in company withothers like me, who weren’t world beaters but enjoyed sport forits own sake, for the lessons in life it taught and the lovelypeople met along the way. I always felt very much alive inplaying, running, swimming, cycling and the like, enjoying

Wow!!!! SOLD OUT !!I really do not know where to start . . .It’s now been 2 weeks since The Pocahontas Players 'AnotherNight at the Theatre' and we are all, STILL on 'a high'It had been 4 months, tremendously hard work to get this showtogether and know that all three performances, with every ticketsold, was  just amazing! Just to watch Dave climbing up(nervously)  to  stick the 'SOLD OUT' across the Public Hallbanner, was so good. This was the first time for our group to havedone this, so you can imagine how elated we were all feeling .Our audiences came from all over the country, ie  Cambridge,March, Northamptonshire, Downham Market, Royston, South-ampton, Norwich, Kings Lynn, Burnham Market, and manymore, plus of course locals from Dersingham, Snettisham,Ingoldisthorpe, Sedgeford, Hunstanton and our village of Heach-am. We welcomed many of our frequent followers but also manynew followers who had never attended a Pocahontas production. We thank the Friday Night Bingo for giving up their bingo nightmaking it possible for us to put on a weekend show, enablingmany of our weekend caravaners  and holiday folk to attend. We would like to thank Peter Sutton of Suttons Estate Agents inHeacham, for allowing us to promote our show by using hiswindow to display costumes from previous shows. Thanks to allthe many businesses in Heacham and surrounding villages forshowcasing our Show Posters. Thanks to The Burnham Trader forthe advertising, to The Lynn News for great coverage of theforthcoming show, to Radio Norfolk for announcing the details oftimes dates etc. Also YOU, The Heacham Newsletter. This was byfar, our best 'word of mouth'. It was amazing, how at least 3/4 ofthe people phoning for tickets, had seen it in the Newsletter!!!It now brings me to the show. To see the hall packed full andthen to see standing ovations at the end, was so emotional, notjust for the audiences but for us to.  We have 40 members nowin the Pocahontas players, ranging from the age of 12 to 67, andfor us to witness this, it makes the song title "There's no busi-ness, like show business" so true.We have now packed away all the fabulous Lion King animals andtold all of Mary Poppins characters to "Close your mouth, you arenot a cod fish"!! but its been fantastic! We had a great writer(Jimma Race) Director (Jeannie Tooley) Co Director (Peter Ever-ingham) Choreographer (Jaime Tooley) Back Drop painting team(The Race family) Set builders (Dave Curtis and DavidConner with their 'runners' Joshy Chilvers and Della O'Donnell)

Costumes? Well yes, I did do the costumes but not on my own. Forthis production I had the very clever seamstress Heather Conner, atmy side. Six weeks before the production, the Pocahontas Playerswere able to purchase a much needed Follow Spot but having noone to  operate it, I  coaxed my younger sister, to  get  involved.Although the Follow Spot was bigger than her small frame, shemanaged it!  (Thank you Jayne Mann!) Giving up a lot of her sparetime was Jemma Greef, who was there at every rehearsal, clickingaway with her camera, to achieve superb action shots of rehearsalsfor our programme.  Also the representatives of Hunstanton Com-munity Choir, who enhanced the groups’ singing voices. With thisgreat team, fabulous enthusiastic players  and great advertising, andthe audience support, this made for the production we had workedso very hard to achieve. The stage props were built  and backdrops were painted onFridays. Thank you to the Public Hall for allowing us to do this.Making it easier than having to try fitting it around Tuesdaynight rehearsals. Lastly we must say a big Thank you to AlanRudd (Roofing) for taking the banner down, for Dave, over thePublic Hall door. I think Alan saw just how nervous Dave waswhen he put it up there!!?We are now on our summer break. We meet up again on TuesSept 4th to discuss, read and audition, for the Panto ‘MotherGoose’. If you fancy treading the boards, or doing anything elseie painting, sewing, building, prompt, curtains, it would be lovelyto see you. Youngest age is 11/12 year olds (must be at HighSchool) to 60s/70s/80s or even 90s?!! It really IS good fun! andis a real pleasure to be a member of such a successful drama group.Thank you ALL for your support.

Local Food In TheSpotlight

Buying local food makes sense. Produce can be fresher, it keepsmoney in the local economy, you keep in touch with the sea-sons, and it's fun finding out about the producers of the food andtraditional crafts that make the Norfolk coast special.A long-standing role of the Norfolk Coast Partnership is topromote local producers to help create healthy markets for theirproducts and local food is a particular focus in 2012-13.This year’s Norfolk Coast Guardian, an annual newspaperpublished on behalf of the Norfolk Coast Partnership and avail-able for free throughout the area, focuses on local food as itsmain theme. There are articles by partners and local contribu-tors on how the food is produced by farmers and fishermen andwhere it is sold. There are plenty of opportunities to samplequality local fare. Many local pubs and hotels proudly serveNorfolk food and drink; there are thriving farmers' marketsacross the area, and an increasing number of farm shops offer-ing the best of local produce. The local products directoryprovides more detailed information on over 50 local producers. It can be found on page 16 of the Norfolk Coast Guardian or onthe Norfolk Coast Partnership website - see the ‘local productsdirectory pages’ or look at the ‘active map’ and select the‘producers’ box.

On Friday 1st June, both Heacham Nursery and Infant School and Heacham Junior School held a Jubilee Celebration GardenParty. Dress code was formal ~ and did we look smart!

300 children and 200 parents and staff attended the day which started off with a traditional Punch & Judy Show for the youngerchildren. This was followed by a mega BBQ and picnic! We had a massive ‘Pass the Parcel with 300 children and 30 identicalparcels! Dance displays by both schools kept the crowd entertained and the whole event was rounded off with a RoyalProcession, a coronation and the receipt of a medal for every child from Parish Chairman, Martin Johnston. Many thanks to all the people who made a memorable day possible.

SPONSORED CLIMB OF SNOWDONOn 19 May this year, John Stares completed a sponsoredclimb of Mount Snowdon, in North Wales. The climb wasboth a personal challenge for John after undergoing a majorlung operation two years ago, and a means to raise money forresearch on prostate cancer after a friend in the village diedof the disease 18 months ago, and a friend from universitydays was diagnosed earlier this year (that friend completedthe climb with John). “The climb was tougher than Iexpected,” John reported, “even after three months ofintensive training in the Oasis gym at Hunstanton. I don’tthink I’ll do it again!”.John raised more than £1200, donated by friends in the villageand elsewhere, and he would like to thank everyone whogenerously contributed to this total. He would also like tothank Lyn, his trainer at the Oasis, for her invaluable help andencouragement. The picture shows John (left) and his friend back at “base camp”in Llanberis.

Heacham Infant & NurserySchool update July 12

“Together we explore, discover, achieve and grow”

We have once again enjoyed an excitingand busy month. We hope everyoneenjoyed the Queen’s wonderful Dia-mond Jubilee. We particularly enjoyedthe joint school celebrations on 1st June, kindly hosted at the Junior School. Theevent was well attended by families andfriends. All of our main school childrenperformed dances which were wonder-fully choreographed and enthusiastical-ly led on the day by Helen Battelley.Everyone enjoyed the children’s cheekyperformances! At the end of the after-noon, children from both schools tookpart in a procession, looking a picture intheir ‘Sunday best’ and were presentedwith commemorative coins by the Par-ish Council. A big thank you goes to theParish Council from all our children forthis most generous gesture. We must also mention the tree plantingthat took place in the churchyard onJubilee Sunday. Hannah Stafford andElizabeth England represented ourGateway Club and cheerfully planted,in the pouring rain, a lovely tree. This was donated by thechurch as a lasting tribute to the Jubilee. With the Olympicsclose on our heels and as the topic of our whole school project,

Princess TheatreClub

This is just to let you know that the Princess Theatre ClubNewsletter will from now on be edited by Mr Rae Steward, ournew secretary (and our regular stage-manager and some-time,when he's cajoled into it, actor). There have been a few changeson the committee, giving the club a new dynamic, fresh ideasand renewed energy, so we look forward to good things in thefuture. Our version of 'Steel Magnolias' was very well received and itwas good to see the theatre back in full swing. The newmanagement gave us every encouragement; they are full ofideas and enthusiasm, so please give them all your support.USE IT OR LOSE IT, is our watchword where the theatre isconcerned.Don't forget they are looking for volunteers to help out invarious areas such as stewarding. This usually means seeing theshow for free as well as having a chance to mix and mingle, sospread the word among your family and friends.  This weekendthe theatre Box Office is open selling tickets for the new seasonof shows which begin on 1 July, and the bar provides a lovelyspot to enjoy a coffee or something stronger, with views acrossthe Green to the sea front where all sorts of festivities are takingplace.I shall still be around as a member of the PTC and, hopefully,on stage now and then.If you're free on July 7th come and see us in the Drama Festivalplay 'Infirmary, Infirmary' which starts at 7.00pm.My regards to you all. Now over to Rae, who I know will dohis usual brilliant job. Thanks Rae. Mary Mackie

At the Club's recent AGM changes to the committee wereagreed at the meeting.Noel Mellish has stepped down as Chairman and has beenreplaced by Mick Yates; Barbara Dennis has stepped down asSecretary and has been replaced by myself; Mary and ChrisMackie have also stepped down although they will continue tolook after the website; Malcolm Houghton has also resignedfrom the committee. The new committee will consist of PearlCarpenter who remains as Treasurer, Jane Bean, AnnMcKimm, Ann Houghton and Sharon Yates.

On behalf of the Club I would like to thank all the retiringpeople who have served on the committee over the past fewyears, particularly Noel who has been Chairman over what musthave been the most difficult time in the club's history, with theuncertainty over the future of the Princess Theatre and the twochanges in tenancy. Hunstone Productions, who took over thetheatre have been very positive in their support of the Club aswas demonstrated during our recent production of ‘SteelMagnolias’. The production company would like members tohelp with stewarding at the theatre over the coming month. Ifyou would like to help please contact me.

I would also like to thank Mary Mackie for all her efforts withthe Club's newsletter; it will continue but we will be looking formembers to contribute occasionally with an article basedloosely on entertainment, eg., a show you have recently seen, aquiz or other related articles. Mary will continue organising thePoetry mornings on behalf of the Club.

Sad news has been received with the death of Pat Brooks. Pat,who formerly lived in Sedgeford, became the manager of thePrincess in 1983. She was instrumental in starting the PrincessTheatre Club in 1986. Pat wrote and directed the Club's firstproduction ‘No Appointment Necessary’. Pat also had a longacting career which included roles on stage as well as television- her credits include Coronation Street, Tales of the Unexpectedand Crown Court. Her last directing role for the Club was MusicHall Memories in 1991. Although Pat had moved to Wilburtonin Cambridgeshire she still kept in touch with the club. She hada quick wit and always offered constructive criticism of theClub's productions.

The Lynn AdvertiserNorfolk and Cambridgeshire Herald

April 6th, 1867HEACHAM

Accident: – On Thursday afternoon, March 28th, as Mr Rolfewas driving with his children in a dog-cart about his parish,he had occasion to alight at the gate of the Rev E Oakley, andwhile speaking to him on the subject of some repairs, thehorse, having escaped the boy standing at its head, started offwith the two of his children in the vehicle. Mr Rolfe andseveral men tried to stop it. The animal got frightened andincreased its pace to an alarming extent. It, however, passedsafely though the intricacies of the village, but at length came

into collision with the wall at Cannon corner, opposite theWheatsheaf, smashed the carriage, threw out the children, and ran away with the shafts, which unhappily caught thedress of an old travelling woman, aged 70, well known in thisdistrict.

The poor woman was thrown down, her face much cut, asmall artery being severed and her body a good deal bruised, and when Mr Rolfe got up to them, the condition of all threewas deplorable in the extreme. Mrs Rowland of HollyLodge, and several other friends and neighbours, gave mostkind and ready help. The children were taken into the houseof Mrs Wiseman, and the old woman was conveyed to theWheatsheaf, where she received every care from Mr and MrsWoods. Rowland Flockton, Esq., surgeon, examined andreported favourably of the patients, and on Saturday, he andDr Lade carefully re-examined them and found nothingworse than the bruises inevitable from such a catastrophe. The horse, after running to Hunstanton, was brought back tohis stable unhurt, having been driven the next day over thesame ground to the scene of the accident. He passed everyspot in the quietest manner, as if remembering nothing of theevents of the previous day.

Mr Rolfe has written to us to request that, when we reportthis most providential escape, we will at the same time tenderhis best thanks to his friends and neighbours for their verykind help and sympathy on this trying occasion.

The above was kindly sent in by Chris Mackie. When theaccident occurred, the present day Wheatsheaf (now TescoExpress) had not been built, so the building referred towould have been the one shown in the photo(taken manyyears after the above incident occurred) - Editor

THE POTTING SHED

What a desolate place would be a world without flowers! Itwould be a face without a smile, a feast without a welcome.

Clara L. BalfourMy next door neighbour gave me a rose called “Jill’s Rose” inmemory of my lovely girl. I in turn gave the same sort to ourchildren. Helen took hers to France and it already has fourblooms, beautifully scented, and sits near her front door. Therose is a Floribunda so will attain a good height and doesn’tmind serious pruning. Mine has several buds but is yet toflower. The soil at Las Rochas - red volcanic clay - is verynutritious so when I go to see Helen in about a fortnight, Iexpect to see miracles. I haven’t heard from Catherine or Simonabout theirs yet but no doubt information will flow soon.Back home, things are not doing too badly. The veg garden isdeveloping well but I will be happier when I see the first tinybroad beans coming. There does seem to be a dearth of bees atthe moment, I hope due to poor weather not to disease. There isa deal of panic about the depletion of bee colonies and a numberof experts are blaming the copious use of neonicotinoid sprays.Apparently bees ingest this muck along with pollen and nectarand it wrecks their navigation sense. Several european countrieshave banned the stuff but, as usual, our lot are “waiting for morescientific information!” ie the chemical lobby have got them bythe ………... I say no more.We have had a decent amount of rain now and it looks as if wemight get more. It has certainly bucked my garden up. Now, asI’ve said before, we need lovely warm summer days and nightsof rain (you know, like what we used to get when we and theworld were young!) As always, I blame the government for notorganising things better. We have had several barbecues and havefound to our joy that barbecued asparagus is the very best thing. My “proper” asparagus bed is rubbish but those nice blackbirdshave ingested the seeds from the mature old fashioned plants andexcreted them around my plot. Now I have several rogue plantsthat produce succulent spears and these, cut and cooked within acouple of hours give a heavenly feast. Eileen’s ex-neighboursfrom Las Rochas visited last week-end and were most impressedboth with barbecued asparagus and David Cook’s excellent sau-sages, both plain and “herby” Now I’m told they will let me tryFrench sausages, the fillings of which are much chunkier. Theywere also impressed with the range of English cheeses we havelocally. So, vive l’entente cordiale! Thank goodness Eileen isfluent with French though, as mine is somewhat limited.

I have been told by my eldest, Helen, that there is much to do at LasRochas when I get there. The grass is about a metre high andalthough she has unleashed the horses onto this amazing prairie, theground will still need making decent. Danielle, the farmer’s wife, did attempt to sow some seeds in the vegetable areas that Eileen leftcovered with semi-permeable membrane but, sadly, the area hasbecome home to huge chestnut coloured slugs. Anything sown orplanted therein becomes food for these voracious beasts. I’ll takesome organic slug pellets with me but by the sound of things I’llneed about 20kg of the stuff. So it will be a bucket of salt water andhand picking. Nasty slimy job. Perhaps I should call in sick!We had our first meeting of the gardeners forum last month. Itwas a bit thinly attended as two of the people were away. I thinkit would be best to try again during the end of the year as therewill be more time to chat. So watch this space. So, Vegetables and their cultivation by T.W.SaundersBroad Beans or Vicia faba for you Latin lovers. A member ofthe order leguminosae and native to Egypt. An annual plant.Very highly regarded by the Greeks, Romans and me.In these days the Broad Bean is eaten in its young state not whenripe as in olden times. (in fact you can eat the whole pod and itscontents if picked when about 3-5cm long. Me, I like them fullgrown and meaty but then people say I’m odd.) For the earlybeans a light soil and a warm position is desirable but for the tallsorts, a deep loamy soil is best. Indeed, clay soils if wellworked, will grow broad beans extremely well.No vegetable requires a more generous soil than the broad bean. You can hardly make the soil too rich. To grow the main cropkinds, the soil should be trenched and a good layer of fat dungplaced between each spit. For early types, plenty of rotted dungshould be added before sowing which should be applied theprevious Autumn. To ensure specially good results 15g super-

phosphate and 12g Kainit (a mined fertiliser containing crudepotash with sodium, magnesium and sulphur - not too easy toobtain and no doubt expensive now.) Some authorities adviseNitrate of soda to be applied at the rate of 12g per square yard butwe consider it a waste of time and money to do so. (I should thinkso too considering that all legumes have root nodules containingnitrogen fixing bacteria ie they produce their own nitrate fertiliser). On light soils and warm sheltered south borders protected by awall from north and east winds, sowings can be made in No-vember and December of early dwarf or long pod varieties. Afurther sowing of these sorts can be made in January. (This guyliked broadies as much as I do!) For the later sorts of theWindsor type, from the middle of February to the beginning ofMay will be the best time to sow. Sowings are occasionallymade in pots at a temperature of 55deg. in January or February, the seedlings hardened off in a cold frame and planted out laterbut we do not consider the “game worth the candle” (that’s aninteresting expression. I used to plant in pots and then put outbut I now sow under fleece or wait a little while longer.)The seeds may be sown in single or double drills or in patches.Drills should be 3” deep. Sow seeds 4” apart. Seeds will germi-nate quicker if soaked overnight in water. (I tried this for thefirst time this year. I think I gained a few days.)Early crops can be protected from frost by a covering of dry litter. This should be removed directly the frost has disappeared (I don’tknow why perhaps one of you lot can inform me). Broad beansshould only be gathered just before cooking. (all veg tastes betterif gathered and cooked fresh but I find broadies freeze very well)I did brassicas last time so I’ll have to browse the book beforenext month. I hope all is going well for your gardens. If you findall this too boring, do let me know.

Come along and have a say on the future management of yourcoastline between Hunstanton Cliffs and Wolferton Creek. The Wash East Coastal Management Strategy, led by theEnvironment Agency and the Borough Council, is looking atways of managing flood and erosion risk to local communities, whilst protecting the internationally important natural andhistoric environments along this stretch of coastline. Comealong to the events below for an opportunity to look atexhibitions and talk to our experts:Thursday 19 July, Hunstanton Town Hall, 2-7pmTuesday 24 July, Heacham Infant & Nursery School, 2-7pmFor more information on these events or the Strategy, pleasecontact Nigel Woonton, Environment Agency,[email protected] , 01480 483731

Incinerator UpdateNorfolk County Council has been determined to spend £500Mof our money on an incinerator at any cost to its own reputationregardless of need or merit. When the County Council’s 2008consultation showed most people wanted improved recyclingand composting not incineration, the report’s conclusions didnot reflect the responses, instead they implied support for incin-eration. This is significant because around 1/3 of the wasteintended for incineration would be food which could otherwisebe composted or digested to produce electricity. When theCouncil’s own scrutiny committee ‘reviewed’ the contract deci-sion, a leaked email showed how they had made up their mindsto ‘rubber stamp’ it 5 days before hearing the evidence. Eventhe planning (regulatory) committee has been rigged. If youlook at the distribution of its membership, previously it wasevenly spread throughout Norfolk, now you can draw a linecutting Norfolk in half with the Eastern side over representedand no members at all coming from the West (otherwise knownas the incinerator side of Norfolk). Undermining democracy athome is not enough for some. The County Council’s leaderrecently visited the Caribbean on an official fact-finding trip, asreported in the EDP 11-6-12. “A Caribbean paradise blightedby corruption allegations will have to be tutored by NorfolkCouncil officials before it can re-establish democraticelections.” Many thought it had to be a sick joke, unfortunatelynot. Could a more undemocratic Council have been found?Voter apathy is a problem often lamented by politicians, is itany wonder when voters are treated so badly? A public enquiryand a call-in are both justified and well overdue. The next KLWIN event is a Tea Dance, all ages are welcome to theWilliam Burt Centre, West Winch 7th July 4 – 8pm. THEMAMMOTH

WOOLLY

I’m just sitting knittingand this jumper’s coming on,

But I’ve dropped some of the stitchesand I don’t know where they’ve gone.

The armholes are irregularand the sleeves are way too long.

Apart from that I cannot seethat very much is wrong...

Though the bottom’s very baggyand the neck hole’s much too wide -

It will probably look OK still(if you view it from the side).

I bought some pretty buttonsat a very decent price,

If I’d not forgot the buttonholesthey’d have probably looked quite nice.

I had high expectationsfor this woolly at the start,

But I’m just sitting knitting, now,a piece of modern art.

Nancy Robinson,(for Pam, whose knitting

is always superb).24th May 2012

Able Community CareQuestions and Answers

Question:- I am a private patient for medical care. I amunhappy about the treatment I am receiving from my privatedental practice. I have made mention of my complaint but I amnot happy about their response. I would like to take this further,do I contact my PCT?Answer:- If you are a private patient you should voice yourconcerns to the Dental Complaints Service whose telephonenumber is 0845 6120540 and you may like to visit their web siteat http://www.dentalcomplaints.org.uk.

If your complaint is about a dentists professional conduct, youmay be referred on to the General Dental CouncilQuestion:- I have a disabled son who smokes and does notrealise that ash is going on the floor, or that his cigarette endsare not always out. When I am there I can check on him but Iworry all the time I am out. Any ideas?Answer:- Some general guidance would be to: Have a metalwaste bin as an ash tray and put a little water in the base; investin non flammable bedding, furnishing and clothing and makesure that you have a workable smoke alarm; invest in a pendantalarm so that your son could call for help in an emergency.Question:- I live in a block of flats where I have always feltsafe. I have a chain on my door which I always keep on.However, in the last few weeks there have been a couple ofunpleasant incidents re people who are not local and I feeluncomfortable about opening my door even with the chain on.I think a spy hole would be a good idea do you know whoinstalls them and how much it costs?Answer:- Spy holes are a good idea and my suggestion wouldbe to contact your local Age UK (Concern) and speak to themabout their Handyman Service. Spy holes are included in thisservice. There is a cost but the work would be carried out by arespected person and the cost would be fair. If you do not havea Handyman Service in your area you could contact your localpolice station and ask to speak to the Crime Prevention team, who will be able to assist you.

Question:- I live in a small rural town with only a few shops.I need to get some anti-allergy bed linen. The catalogues I havesent for do not have this kind of item. Do you know where I canpurchase some please?Answer:- Pay a visit to the following web site:http://www.allergyuk.org . This web site has information withreference to chain stores which sell anti allergy bed linen aswell as smaller companies.

Pavilion Update -YOUR LAST CHANCE TO ‘BUY A BRICK’

Though we have not heard anything concrete since our last report, time is slowly passing and the 12-week wait will soon be over.We have very positive signs from Football Foundation and alsoSport England who we are looking to as our main funders.Support locally is still forthcoming and thankfully, we can seethe light at the end of the tunnel so we have been advised thatwe should now put a deadline of 31st July 2012 on the ‘Buy aBrick’ scheme. This will give the suppliers enough time to prepare, etch anddeliver the individually named bricks well in time before weanticipate commencement of building works at the beginning ofOctober. Please, if you would like to subscribe to this project, make anapplication NOW for your brick because once the deadline datehas passed, so will that opportunity FOR YOU. Leafletsavailable from Heacham Social Club - 01485 570776 or RogerDrinkwater - 01485 571659The ‘Patrons Board’ may appeal to some, though we must put aminimum price to this and consider donations upwards of £200to be a fair amount. Unlike the ‘Buy a Brick’ scheme, the‘Patrons Board’ does not have a deadline date and will beon-going throughout the project. We will most definitely update the village on progress and hopethat in the August edition of this Newsletter, we will be able toreport that both Football Foundation AND Sport England havelooked favourably upon this much needed project and havesupported our rural community and the total project will goahead as originally planned with an Autumn 2012 schedule.

1948 Olympic Torch Came and Went…………Saturday 2nd June was one of the few days in the last monthwhere we can report that the weather was actually sunny anddidn’t rain! Thank goodness for that! Had we hosted the 1948Olympic Torch on the following day, it most certainly wouldhave been a washout.Sporting activities of all sorts were provided free of charge onHeacham Club Charity Sports Field, bowling green and in theHall. Some things were better attended than others but wewould like to thank those involved in running their particularevent and in helping make it such a lovely, sporting day.The Stroke Association Ramble, which followed after the Torcharrived at the field was a bit of a mish-mash because the‘instruction’ we believed to be forthcoming from the beneficiar-ies, just didn’t happen! Nevertheless, those people who kindlysubscribed to the event were happy how they spent their timewith the Torch and were pleased to receive their t-shirts, medalsand certificates. Mrs Audrey Wragg and Mr Lou Durrant madepresentation to ‘Ramblers’ jointly; both of who saw THE Torchat the London Olympics in 1948, so that brought back somehappy memories for them both. The Ramble itself was not too well supported but with applica-tions and sponsorships, we anticipate sending a cheque to theStroke Association, in excess of £500 in total, so a really bigthank you to those who sponsored and supported the event.

Diamonds at Heacham

Dealer, N, with an 8 card diamond suit and 2 singletons bid asomewhat unconventional "3 diamonds" pre emptive bid. W.passed and S. to N's amazement bid 4 NT, asking for Aces. (hehas to do this in spite of having all 4 himself!) N responded 5C,(no Aces.)

S then asked for Kings with 5NT. Again N's response was anegative 6C . S bid 6D. which was easily made, as could 6NThave been, but with less certainty as S. would expect a Queeninstead of an 8th. Diamond.

Unbeknown to me this featured that morning in a nationalnewspaper that I don't read. There the expectation was that thebidding would go round to S, who, with his 23 points, would bid2C. N would give a positive response in diamonds, but wouldwe have reached 6D or 6NT?

Get in touch if you're interested in taking up club bridge - or ifyou prefer we will let you know the current situation for playingin our improvers' sessions on Thursday evenings.

HEACHAM PARISH COUNCIL NOTICEBOARD

Diamond Jubilee Street Party

Luckily the sun shone and although the wind kept thetemperature cool, the Street Party went off without a hitch. Theevent was a sell out and as evident from the many photographsparty goers entered into the Jubilee spirit with hats, flags and insome cases costumes. This event was the result of muchplanning by Parish Council members and staff; however we areespecially grateful to St Mary’s Church, Heacham Club Charityand the occupants of the High Street for their support. Inaddition, we are grateful for grants made by Norfolk CountyCouncil, KL&WN Borough Council and Friends of HeachamBeaches, which went a long way to providing extras on the dayto make the event special.

This years’ Carnival Parade and Fete will be held on Sunday 5August. The Parade which will start at 2.30pm from CollegeDrive will be led by the Peterborough Pipe Band. Forms toregister your float which include exact parade timings and routeare available from the Parish Library, Parish Council Office andwebsite. This year’s Lavender Queen is Millie Jose withattendants Jessica Parish, Hannah Stafford and Poppy Jose.
