The Haversack The Newsletter of the SGT Lawrence Everhart Chapter

of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution

December, 2012

As the Chapter begins this new year, I want to take the opportunity to express my

thanks for the honor and privilege to serve as your President. I hope with your help

to follow in the tradition and standards set by our previous Presidents and look for-

ward to a good year. A special thanks to Assistant Secretary Neil Fay, who will be

picking up some additional duties as I serve the Chapter as both President and Sec-

retary. Additional thanks to Compatriots George Lewis and Tom Sherald, who have

become part of the Leadership Team as 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents.

One of the first things that we will be looking into is how to shorten our Annual and

Semi-Annual Meetings. We don't want to take away from Speaker Programs and

Member Recognition, but we will strive to have better run meetings with the goal of

keeping the time to a minimum. I have several ideas, but would appreciate your in-

put If you have any suggestions or comments, please share them with me as we

work through this and build our April Semi-Annual Meeting Agenda.

The Chapter will mostly continue with the same programs as last year with one ex-

ception. Most Committee Chairs have remained the same. We do appreciate Tom

Sherald and Gene Moyer stepping up to take over the Outstanding Citizenship

Award and the Flag Award Committees, respectively. The new Program/Committee

is the NSSAR Elementary School Poster Contest. Details about the program can be

found in the Haversack. I'd like to thank Compatriot Fred Michel; who stepped for-

warded and donated half of the Prize Money for the Contest. If anyone else would

like to contribute to help offset the expense, please contact me.

Finally, I always seem to get asked how I can help the Chapter and its programs.

The answer is very simple. Renew your dues before December 31 and contact a

Committee Chair or Officer to serve on one of our many committees. You'll find

that they don't require a great deal of time and the outcome is very rewarding.

On behalf of the Chapter Officers, I wish you and your families a Happy & Safe

Holiday Season! Remember the Men & Women in our Armed Forces, especially

during this season, for all of their sacrifices to make our country strong and safe!

Patriotically Yours,

Rick Stup,

President/Secretary

War Service Medal & Military Service Medal

We are happy to report that once again this year our

Chapter will participate in this MDSSAR Program. At

printing, we have twelve (12) applications forward to

MDSSAR for award honoring War Service and Military

Service. The Medals will be presented at MD State

George Washington Birthday Event on February 23,

2013 held at Eagle’s Nest (Towson Golf & Country

Club) Golf Club

Any member who qualifies and has not received a War

or Military Service Medal is encouraged to file the appli-

cation. The War Service Medal was authorized since its

inception in 1899, and the Military Service Medal was

authorized in 2006. There is a short form and military

service documentation that is required. Once prepared,

the application package is submitted to the Assistant

Chapter Secretary for review and submitted to NSSAR

through MDSSAR. The medals are generally awarded by

the State President at The MDSSAR George Washington

Birthday Event in February.

Any member who would like additional information on

these medals and the process are asked to contact Chap-

ter Secretary Rick Stup at [email protected].

Elementary School Poster Contest Committee

We have accepted the challenge from MDSSAR Presi-

dent Lou Raborg, and have established a committee to

participate in the NSSAR Elementary Poster Contest.

CHAPTER TO HOLD ANNUAL BUSINESS/PLANNING MEETING

The Chapter will hold its Annual Business/Planning (Members Only) Meeting on January 17 starting at 11:30 AM at

the Evangelical Lutheran Church Trunk Hall. A catered lunch will be served. This is a “working” meeting. It is an

important meeting and is a good opportunity to see what “goes on behind the scenes” and get involved. The meeting

will discuss budget issues, planned activities, the events schedule and a review of committee activity. If you have

suggestions for new Programs/Outreach or Ideas on existing ones, plan to attend or contact a Chapter Officer/

Committee Chair with the details to present on your behalf.

To get to the meeting, come to Evangelical Lutheran Church at 31 East Church Street and walk down the path on the

right side of the Church to Trunk Hall which is attached to the back of the Church. It is important that you prepay for

the lunch or make reservations so we know how many meals to prepare. We are setting a price of $15 for the meal

which should pay for the food, provide a stipend for the preparer and leave a little left over; but we need to know how

much food to prepare. For information on making reservations, see the back page.

SAR Presents Service to Veterans

The Service to Veterans Medal, 1st Oak

Leaf Cluster was awarded by the Sgt. Law-

rence Everhart Chapter, SAR to chapter

member Mr. Frank Joy.

The initial Service to Veterans Award,

which Mr. Joy won last year, is presented to

members who have given long and exempla-

ry service to veterans and have documented

volunteer work that earned 5,000 USS

STARK Award points.

For each additional 3,000 points, a member

receives an Oak Leaf Cluster. Out of the

125 chapter members, Mr. Joy is the only

member with documented achievements to

be recognized at this level. Pictured from left to right are Sheldon Shealer, Veteran’s Committee

Chairman, Frank Joy, and Charles (Larry) Bishop, Chapter Outgoing
