Ask a man what kind of car he drove in high school and he first turnswistful, then tells stories of his first love and how he wishes he’d neverhave let her get away. That will be the look on close to 10,000 faces at
Charlton Park on Sunday when the historic venue hosts its biggest show of theyear, the 31st annual Father’s Day Car Show and Swap Meet. With the help ofthe Southern Michigan Street Rod Association, the Park will welcome over1,000 customized thunder machines some coming from as far as Florida andTexas and all guaranteed to take a man back to his glory days. At the park thisweek to help prepare are club members (front, from left) Bob Etheridge, SteveHankinson, John Moffett, and Bill Luke. Back row, Dave Nelson and StevePugh. On a day to honor fathers, the splendor of a field full of chrome and tailfins will fill the bill again on Sunday. For more, turn inside.

BARRY COUNTY’S #1 MATTRESS DEALER!
Since its first studentsgraduated in 1877,Hastings High School, likeevery community’s highschool, has helped dis-cover potential, launchcareers, and change lives. For the next severalweeks, the Reminderplans to visit with currentgraduating seniors andwith past graduates toexplore why HastingsHigh School has been someaningful in their lives.
The things she was toldshe couldn’t do may be asvaluable to SarahThornburgh as the thingsthat she did learn atHastings High School.
“When I told Mr. Buehlerthat I wanted to go toDuke,” recalls the recentSaxon graduate, “he told memy chances weren’t verygood.”
Which doesn’t mean thatlongtime science teacherMartin Buehler gave up onher.
“Mr. Buehler made methink realistically, but thenhe pushed me,” saysThornbugh. “I made sure
that I took all five AdvancedPlacement classes that wereoffered and, if somethingwasn’t offered as an AP, Itook an honors class.
“He knew I could handleorganic chemistry but, because it wasn’t offered asa course, he pushed me totake it as an independentstudy. It was his attempt toprepare me and he madesure I was ready.”
Ready enough andconfident enough thatThornburgh proceeded towrite an application essay toDuke University that had allthe makings of a bestselling, heart warmingnovel.
I knew my essay had tobe really good,” saysThornburgh, 18. “I had toprove that I was worth beinga part of their class.”
In less than two monthsshe will be and, though herpath differs from others,Thornburgh is certain thatthe motivation, theguidance, and the instructionshe received at HastingsHigh School exists foreveryone who has a careerand life dream -- or islooking for one.
“You kind of get an innatesense of kids after you’vebeen teaching awhile,” saysBuehler, who’ll begin his24th year in the classroomthis fall. “You have to readthe situation a little bitdifferently sometimes witheach student, but you cometo know what buttons topush to make them work alittle harder.”
Buehler, who’ll begin his24th year in the classroomthis fall, pushed the speed
button with Thornburghwho, as he remembers, pushed him to offer herorganic chemistry.
“A lot of the kids wantedorganic chemistry but, withthe budget as it is, we neverhad enough students towarrant a class. I think Itold her no and then we
finally negotiated it out . . .she’d have to run things andbe a true, independent self-learner. I’d check on her butit would be her work.”
The arrangement wasperfect for Thornburghwhose independent initiativewill be ideally suited to hergoal of becoming a researchscientist. The motivationshe received from Buehlerand the guidance shereceived from other teacherstold her that she needed tofind a college whereresearch opportunities forundergraduate students areplentiful. The high techreputation of the Raleigh-Chapel Hill-Durham area inNorth Carolina pushed hertoward Duke Universityearly on.
“Everybody knows Dukebecause of its basketballteam,” says Thornburgh,“but it’s also a school and anarea with a mix of allcultures -- and I wanted tobe challenged.”
That call to develop herpotential came from anumber of places andperspectives, saysThornburgh, but there’s nodoubt that Hastings HighSchool and the teachers andfellow students whochallenged her there allowedto bloom. A large part ofthat, she believes, is fromschool’s and thecommunity’s owndemographic.
“Because we’re a smallerschool, you don’t getswallowed up,” observesThornburgh of herhometown and school. “It’seasy to do what you want todo and to get involved withwhat you want to beinvolved with.”
Thornburgh uses the
Saxon music program as anexample.
“I was involved in band, the jazz band, and dramaand musical theatre,” shesays. “There is alwayssomething to do.”
Though she’ll beconsumed pursuing a doublemajor in biology andchemistry and fulfillingrequirements for a pre-medical program,Thornburgh has been giftedwith a love for thesaxophone which will insome way have to beindulged, just like the gameof tennis.
“I always liked to watchand play the game,” saysThornburgh who traces herintroduction to the sport to aforeign exchange studentwho lived with the family
and competed in the sport.“I played No. 2 singles lastyear and No. 4 this year --which worked out better forme.”
Better becauseThornburgh took home athird place conference finishand yet another memory ofher years at a high schoolwhich allowed heropportunity in sports, arts, and academics.
Because Duke was heraim for many years,Thornburgh applied for“early decision” status andwas accepted in December. The acceptance was basedon a binding agreement thatThornburgh attend Duke andimmediately withdraw anyapplications she had made toother schools. Applicationswere already staged forVanderbilt and NorthwesternUniversities and Thornburghhad no trouble decliningpromising opportunities atthose schools.
“I knew I wanted to gosomewhere that would openopportunities for the future,”she explains, “especially inresearch science.”
Though her pursuits maycarry her to a medical doctordegree, Thornburgh hasalways enjoyed the pursuitof leading edge discovery. An area which conductsenough research that evenundergraduates haveopportunities to participatemade Thornburgh’s aimeven more precise -- andcorrect.
To know that he and histeaching collegues helpedThornburgh and everyHastings High Schoolstudent to focus that aimwarms Buehler’s heart.
“They’re all trying to pulloff their next level ofgreatness,” is how Buehlerviews the students wholeave Hastings High School,“and we’re proud to be partof it.”
– Doug VanderLaan
Just Say “As advertised in the Reminder” Hastings Saturday, June 16, 2012
Hastings High School offered the chance for SarahThornburgh to participate and to excel in athletics, arts, and academics.
Saxon motivation makes Duke dreamcome true for Sarah Thornburgh
“Because we’re a smaller school, you don’t get swallowed up. It’s easy to dowhat you want to do and to get involvedwith what you want to be involved with.”
Sarah Thornburgh,HHS graduate and
future Duke University graduate
“You kind of get an innate sense of kidsafter you’ve been teaching awhile. You have to read the situation a little bitdifferently sometimes with each student, but you come to know what buttonsto push to make them work a little harder.”
Martin Buehler, HHS science teacher This special message brought to you by …
