The Haseley Herald 2005 Edition Published annually for Friends and Relatives Season’s Greetings Our Family Grows...... Andrea Brings Us Another Steve What a great year! Most of the year was spent get ting ready for September 17… the day we officially added another mem- ber to the Haseley ex tended fam ily. Steve Roe and I ex- changed vows in Atlanta in front of our family and friends. It was definitely a fam- ily event – Tania was the matron of honor; Ste phen gave me away; Jordan and Patrick were groomsmen; Susan was a brides- maid; Sarah Kate (my stepniece) was the flower girl; Hans gave a reading and Mom and Janet were escorted down the aisle. We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and spent 10 days visiting Kona, Maui and Honolulu. Highlights included a sunrise bike ride down Haleakala, helicopter flights over an active volcano and Molokai’i, and snorkeling in a nature preserve. I also had a break-through year in my career. So far, I have closed five transactions ranging from acquiring a public telecom- munications provider and home health care companies, to taking Caribou Coffee public. In addition, Steve changed jobs this sum- mer and now is a sales executive at KnowledgeStorm, an Internet sales and marketing organization serving technology companies. To top it off, it turns out that Steve is related (distantly) to the Haseleys. We always knew that the two families would join. J Happy Holidays from the Malik/Roe Family Andrea Malik Roe & Steve Roe (Andrea is Janet’s goddaughter) Jennifer Becomes Mrs. Phillips 2005 has been a remarkable year. It started slowly, but by March my year was buzzing. John proposed on March 1 st , very romantically J and I of course accepted. We decided to get married on August 13 th , 2005. So needless to say, we had a very busy summer. Planning a wedding turned out to be a unique and very rewarding experience. We had a won- derful time at the wedding and really appreciate everyone coming and sending their warm wishes. We spent our honeymoon in Bermuda. It was an awesome vacation. We walked the caves, watched some beau ti ful dolphins, toured the his- toric sights, shopped and relaxed on the beach. Fol- low ing our hon ey moon, we spent a week at the beach in NC with Scottie, Kim, Reese and my mom. It was a perfect end to a perfect summer; and we are now back in reality. In November I began working with Lincoln Community Center, an affiliate of Duke Hospital System, and love my job. John left his financial analyst role at GlaxoSmithKline to form EPP Contract Audit Services, LLC in August. The business is starting to gain ground and we are excited about the possibilities. Just when we thought that we could not be blessed anymore this year, we discovered that I am expect- ing and due in late April. We are really ecstatic and cannot wait for the baby to come! We hope everyone has had an equally exciting and enjoyable year and look forward to seeing everyone. John and Jennifer Phillips And Grows....... Jennifer and John Phillips (Jennifer is Scott Davenport’s daughter) Another Set of Twins! Is the Haseley family ready for another set of twins? I hope so - because they are here. We (Harry and Ellen Dan) adopted Kaitlin and Kristin from China this spring. In Karen’s news you will read a little more about our trip to become a for- ever family with our daugh ters. What a change this has been for us…I resigned my posi- tion on a Tuesday, and we left for China early Thursday morning. We are so fortunate to have “Auntie Karen” in our lives who was willing to take two weeks of her vacation to go with us and experience that special moment when the girls were placed in our arms. Watch- ing the girls grow and develop has been the highlight of our year. They will turn two on December 17 so our house is full of fun toys, new words and new experiences every day for both us and the girls. We now have 6 teddy bears, 8 dolls, 2 doll beds, 2 cribs, 2 highchairs, 2,4 6, 8 as long as it is divisible by 2 - I think you get the idea. But it also means double the daily stuff like diapers, and twice the teething…so along with the fun (double the hugs and kisses) comes double work. This summer we had some fun dinners on our deck with Lynne, Anna and Blair while they were in Columbia which was followed by a long weekend in R’ville. Our girls met a lot of the Ellen, Kristin, Kaitlin and Harry Dan (Harry and Ellen have been Karen’s best friends for 15+ years) continued on next page And Grows!

Haseley fam ily and friends in R’ville 4th ofJuly week end.

Mrs. H. has been giv ing me good ad vice onwhat to do and not to do with twins…but I justcan’t re sist dress ing them alike as it is fun! Thegirls are mir ror twins, one is left handed andone is right handed.Mir ror twins areiden t i cal eventhough they look just a bi t d i f fer ent(Kristin has curl ierhair than Kaitlin).

While the girlswere be hind de vel -op men tally the firstcou ple of months, they have s incecaught up and passedthe mile stones forthe i r age . We’vetaught the g i r l sAmer i can Sign Lan -guage (ASL) so they can “talk” us ing their hands. This al lows thegirls to share what is go ing on in their worldeven if they can’t speak the words. Just re -cently while watch ing our niece playbas ket ball, the girls signed that she was “in”the game. I thought that was pretty clever toex press what they saw. They use their signs

cre atively, tell ing us what they see and hear orto ask for more milk or crack ers. They havelearned over 50 signs but now they are start -ing to speak and re peat words.

I can only hope our twins turn out as fun and dy namic as the Haseley twins! I have to ad mit

we love the sto rieswhere Lynne says Suedid it, and Sue saysLynne did it! We ap -pre ci ate all the wellwishes and sup port we have re ceived from allof you as we be camepar ents. All the spe -cial thoughts ande-mails re ally meant alot to us.

We wish you all agreat Thanksgiving,Christ mas and NewYear, wher ever youare and for the fam ilyyou cel e brate with.

Give each an ex tra hug and ap pre ci ate thatwher ever your fam ily co mes from - know howspe cial they are.

Niles has his own ma jor ad just ments withhis new life style which he may or may not have time to write about. By the way, it would be in -ter est ing to com pare his first year of col legeHH with that of his mom’s, aunts’, un cle’s andcousin’s. His to rian? Any way, back on thehome front, it is tak ing some ad just ing, someeasy and some still work ing through.I Dad started driv ing a “new” car. Thanks

Allan and Kelly, or did you want it back?(Ed i tor’s note: The car Allan and Kellygave Niles is not wel come at Cha pel Hillthis year; fresh men are not al lowed to have cars, so that’s Stu art’s “new” car thisyear.)

I No shut tle ser vice. Chauf feur Niles is nothere.

An drew Ex cels in Ath let icsThere are two things I en joy

dur ing the win ter: snowboarding and in door la crosse. For NewYears, my fam ily and a cou ple ofother fam i lies went to Mt. Snow. This moun tain was very big withpow dery snow. I had a great timethere. I snow boarded with Niles,Em ily, and Cameron. Our par -ents skied. Mainly when we goski ing, I go with Niles. I lovesnowboarding and can’t wait un -til this win ter to go. Hope fully

Niles will come back to visit and we can go to an other big moun -tain. Dur ing the win ter, when I’m not snowboarding, I playin door la crosse. The field is very small so it is easy to score goals and stay in for a lon ger pe riod of time.La crosse is a great sport.

In the spring I played ju nior var sity la crosse formy school, play ing mid-field and some times at tack.We played many chal leng ing teams dur ing our sea -son. I also played in tour na ments and a league dur ing the sum mer. La crosse is an ex cit ing game and is fastpaced.

I fin ished 9th grade in June and I am very happy tobe out of Perry Ju nior High. I did n’t go to the ShadFestival or to North Carolina over spring break be -cause I had la crosse over the break.

Dur ing the sum mer we went to Florida. We wenton a cruise that went to Nassau in the Ba ha mas. Wewere able to get off the boat and we rented mo peds. While we were go ing through the town on our mo -peds we saw all of the shops. On the cruise there wasa wa ter slide and a pool. We had free break fast each day and in

our room some mov ies were played all day,one of which was Shark Tale. Our fam ilyprob a bly watched this over four times. TheBa ha mas were nice and the wa ter was prettywarm.

Af ter the cruise we vis ited the Grif -fins. The Grif fins are our old neigh borswho moved down to Florida. They havea nice house and neigh bor hood downthere, but I’m guess ing they like our neigh bor hood better. Westayed a night at the Grif fins’ house and then we went to theHartshornes. Eric is one of their kids. He and Em ily are verygood friends. Also they have a girl, Danielle, and a younger boynamed Justin. Danielle is Cameron’s age and they are also goodfriends. We stayed a night at their house and Cameron washappy be cause he got to play his new com puter game calledBack yard Skate board ing.

Over the sum mer, my friend moved to Saratoga. He likes itthere and is right on the lake. I went up and vis ited him and wewent jet ski ing on the lake. His house is big and he lives in a very

nice neigh bor hood.He has met somenew friends and hestill co mes back tovisit over the week -ends. I’m sure hemisses New Hart ford a lot.

This fa l l I amplay ing in two tour -na ments for la crosse. I am also start ing in -door la crosse thisweek. I started toplay in door soc cerwith a bunch of myfriends. We won ourfirst game ten to one.

I like play ing soc cer and we some times go down to the field andshoot around. In school, I am tak ing all ad vanced place mentcourses such as: AP Euro his tory, chem is try hon ors, math 4, andEng lish hon ors. I am do ing well in these courses and some ofthem have a lot of work.

Em ily Likes...I went to Mount Snow for New

Years with the But lers. We also met my mom’s friend Chrisanne there.I snowboarded with Cameron. Themoun tain was pretty good. It wasfun. In the win ter I played bas ket -ball for school. I’m not sure whatmy team’s re cord was though.Over Feb ru ary break we wentdown to Florida. We stayed withthe Grif fins in their new house forlike a week. The Grif fins are ourold friends who used to live in our neigh bor hood. Af ter westayed with them we went on a cruise! We went on it for 3 nightsand 3 days. Our ship was Car ni val. We got these cards for drinksand food; they were kinda like credit cards. We could get anyfood or drink with these cards. It was awe some. We also had awa ter slide on our boat, 3 pools, and 2 Jacuzzis. Cameron and Istayed to gether like the whole time; we just kept go ing up andget ting more Shir ley Temples. We vis ited the Ba ha mas on thecruise. I got my hair corn rowed. We rented this mo tor bike thing and rode them around. Then we had to go back to the ship.

Af ter the cruise we went to visit one of my best friends, Eric.He moved down to Florida last year. I miss him a lot! Our wholetrip to Florida was so much fun. I hope to do it again some timesoon.

ON APRIL 13th I TURNED 13! I’m still a kid in sidethough…. I don’t want to grow up yet! Over April break JessieRys, Caitlin But ler, Mamma Rys (Jessie’s mom), and Mrs. But -ler went to North Carolina with my mom, Cameron and me.They went to the Shad Fes ti val with us. They also went to thebeach. We had so much fun!

In the spring I played la crosse for my school sport. I fin ished7th grade. Blair came to visit this past sum mer. Anna came, too. They stayed with us for 3 weeks. Aunt Lynne ran theBoilermaker. Blair ran the kids’ run. Anna and I be came re allyclose. We al ways jumped on the tram po line; it was like our fa -vor ite thing when they were here. I had so much fun.

best times I ever had. I went with EmmaGrosseman, Erin Loughlan, Bri Ambrosse, andEm ily Lavine. I was in Elm cabin. My coun sel -ors were Sa van nah andLaura. I met so manypeo ple. In my cabinthere were 11 girls. All5 of us from NH then we had Jackie , Maddy,Hannah, Nickie, Julie, and Clair. We had somany good times.Maddy, Hannah, Nickie, and Julie all came to -gether from New Jer sey.Jackie and Clair bothcame from Al bany. Weall be came close wicked quick. Since we be came close so quick, rightfrom the start we wereso hy per. The at ten tionwas al ways on ourcabin. We were just outthere. We were al ways loud too. Ev ery morn -ing we would have to get up at like 8:45 and goto flag pole. At flag pole they would put the flagup and then we would say any an nounce ments.Af ter we said that we would sing songs un tilthe bell rang which meant ei ther break fast, lunch or din ner was ready. When they rang thebell ev ery one would get quiet and get straightin line. They would call us up to the din ing hallby vil lages. There were 4 vil lages; I was in theAdirondack vil lage. They had re ally good food there. Af ter break fast we would go with ourcabin and do ac tiv i ties. They had a lot of dif fer -ent ac tiv i ties. Then we would go to lunch, af terlunch we would have a rest hour. We could ei -ther go to the shop, take a shower or just stay inour cabin. We could go to shop ev ery other day.

It switched off with the girls and the boys. Af -ter our rest hour we all split up and went to theac tiv i ties we signed up for. Af ter those 3 ac tiv i -ties we would meet with our cabin and go to

din ner. Af ter din ner we would doour eve ning ac tiv ity. Once we metin the meet ing hall and they gave us30 min utes to make up a skit. Thenwe had to per form it. We also had tomake up dances. Some times weplayed night games. The wholecamp would play usu ally. The lastnight of camp we had clos ing camp -fire. We would all go down to thefire one by one and throw a chip in it and say what we were thank ful for.It was re ally sad. A lot of peo plecried. I can’t wait to go back! Wehad dif fer ent jobs in our cabin. Like there was some one for sweep ingand then some one for or ga niz ingthe shoes. There were also two peo -ple that were hop pers. The hop perpeo ple went up to the din ing hallwhile ev ery one else was at flag

pole. They would set the ta ble and getthe food on the ta ble. We did our jobsfor 1 day then we would switch. Be foreeach meal we would say a bless ing.Camp Gorham was a blast and all thepeo ple were nice!

I got a new cell phone when I camehome!

When I got back from camp I wasonly home for a week or so be causethen we went to take Niles to col lege.He goes to UNC! We stayed at AuntKa ren’s on the way down to NorthCarolina. We stayed at my Aunt Su -san’s house in North Carolina. The next day we went to see the col lege. Af ter we saw the col lege for a lit tle while wewent to see Niles’ apart ment. We went

to Un cle Allan and Aunt Kelly’s lake housethat night. We stayed at the lake house for aweek. We got there late and my dad and Nileshad to leave re ally early in the morn ing. Theyhad to go to Niles’ ori en ta tion.My dad stayed with Tania onenight and the other night hedrove back to the lake house. He got in late. While they wereoff at the ori en ta tion, Cameron, An drew and I were hav ing thetime of our lives at the lakehouse. Un cle Allan had a wa tertram po line and a lot of tubes. He also had a boat and a jet ski.We did n’t dr ive the boatthough. Un cle Allan came up to drive it . He brought Erin,Emma, and Aunt Kelly, too. They came up and stayed for a week end. Hetook us tub ing. It was so fun. My dad even went on the tube! Un cle Allan went wicked fastwhen An drew and I were on the tube. We hungon with all our might but when he turnedaround we went fly ing! It felt like we were

I’ll have to go to the dreadedVET.

You know, I have a brother, namedSmokey, the fat one. (I’ll never be as fat ashim.) We get in fights all the time. I bite histail, he whacks at my face, I jump on him,and then he hisses and we both walk away. But some times I love him. He will give mea bath while I’m sleep ing. — Chelsea

  • An other Dead lineThis is my 43rd year of writ ing Haseley

Her ald news. (Ed i tor’s note: Well, he will be43 in De cem ber, and he isvery clever, but he didNOT start writ ing whenhe was a new born!) When we were youn ger, Momused to say no more candy un til you write your news. Then it was no play ingbas ket ball, no us ing thecar, no s tay ing outlate….un til you writeyour Haseley Her aldnews. Each year the dead -line to turn in the news got ear lier and ear lier in theyear and the con se -quences for not turn ing inyour news be came moreand more strict.

I per son ally thought New Year’s Day wasthe ideal dead line for the Haseley Her ald newsto be turned in. This would al low all of us to re -port to our friends and rel a tives what we didthe EN TIRE 12 PRE VI OUS MONTHS. Ihad it all planned out…I would use one of the12 let ters (H-A-P-P-Y—N-E-W—Y-E-A-R)to start each sen tence or para graph to re port my news. But of course, my ar gu ments fell on deafears and I was re quired to turn in my news at

the proper dead line or suf fer the con -se quences. I re mem ber oneyear when the news had to beturned in by De cem ber 1, or“Santa Will Not Bring You

    Any Pres ents!” I turned

that news in a week early and ex plained in de tail what I did for the PAST 11 MONTHS, but still

did not get the new con vert ible Iwanted for Christ mas.

For many years now thedead line for turn ing in HaseleyHer ald news has been Thanks-giving Day. We have al waysbeen told we would not be al -lowed to eat Thanksgivingdin ner if our news was notturned in. So each year in earlyNo vem ber I would write myHaseley Her ald news and re -port on hap pen ings from thePRE VI OUS 10 MONTHS ofthe year.

This year Ire ceived ane-mai l f romKa ren and Mom

that our Haseley Her ald newswas due by Hal low een. Theydid not ex plain the con se -quences of what wouldhap pen if we failed to meet the dead line, but I knew from mychild hood days, it was go ingto have some thing to do withNOT get ting any candy…..Sohere I sit the first of Oc to bertry ing to re mem ber whato u r f a m i l y d i d t h e p a s t9 MONTHS of the year.

Next year I am look ing for -ward to the dead line be ingLA BOR DAY or maybe thenext year’s dead line be ingJULY 4th. If this trend keepsup and the dead line keeps

mov ing ear lier and ear lier, I would have lessnews to write each year and maybe even tu allythe dead line will be moved all the way back tomy orig i nally sug gested dead line of Jan u ary 1and I would have no months to re port on and no news to write! Un til then here is our news for2005:

Haseleys con tinue to en joy go ing on an -nual trips to Steam boat, CO; the beach;Rensselaerville; Shad Fes ti val; La bor Daycamp ing; moun tains; Grifton; T&W Oys terBar and New Bern. This year we also vis itedthe Mill ers, went to New York City, and renteda travel trailer and vis ited Kings Do min ion and Wash ing ton, DC.

Allan and Kelly cel e brated their 15th wed -ding an ni ver sary this year with a “Ve gas” party

in Char lotte with about150 rel a tives and closefriends. All the kids andadults en joyed play ing“Ve gas type” games andalso helped cel e brateKelly’s 41st birth day.

Last May, Kel ly’s90-year-old grand mother,Mama Ruth, passed away.Kelly and her mom are do -ing well ad just ing to lifewith out her. We all missher very much.

Like any new par ents,we are very ex cited andproud about our new ad di -tion to the Haseley fam ily.Her name is Chelsea. Herbroth ers, Smokey andGoldie, and her sis ters,Erin and Emma, are alsovery glad to have her joinour fam ily. So far Smokey

has not been too jeal ous of an other cat in thehouse and Chelsea has not eaten Goldie yet.

On the busi ness side, we con tinue to ownand op er ate the Sports Ware house In doorSports Fa cil ityand are plan ningto build a newone in the Char -lotte area. Thenew fa cil ity willhave many of the same ac tiv i tieswe cur rently of -fer but will be ina better lo ca tionand be aboutthree times aslarge as our cur -rent one.

We all con -tinue to en joyour lake house on Lake Tillery on week endsand the Miller crowd used the house as a homebase this sum mer when they brought Niles toCarolina.

Erin con tin ues to en joy play ing bas ket ball, mak ing and ed it ing home mov ies, learn ing theclar i net and read ing. She is in fifth grade and isgrow ing up way too fast.

Emma con tin ues to love to make, build and cre ate imag i na tive things. She is in sec ondgrade and en joys play ing and vis it ing all hernew friends she has made this year.

Next year the Haseleys plan to do more ac -tiv i ties and trips in the first few months of the

    Erin’s Ex cit ing Year

Well like I said, I had a very ex cit ing,fun year. I did so much stuff. And now I’m go ing to tellyou all about it.

Christ mas was a lot offun last year. Grandma came again. We had a lot of pres -ents, but I think my fa vor ite

pres ent is the air hockey ta ble! My par entsgave us 2 ping pong pad dles and air hockeypucks. We did n’t know what they were for un til we went into our play room. It can also be aping-pong ta ble. Grandma left on Christ masDay, so we went over to my Grandma Pat’shouse. All of my cous ins were there. We hadchicken, and my fa vor ite, sweet po tato cas se -role. I had 5 help ings!

Jan u ary is my birth day month. My birth daywas fi nally on a Sat ur day. So I had the bestparty. First I in vited about 20 of my friends tothe Sports Ware house to play la ser tag. Theyloved it. Then 4 of my friends stayed with me.We went to Pep per oni’s to eat. Then we gothome and had some real fun. We tried to put ona play about 4 witches try ing out for a play.Their names were the Witch of Style, TheGothic Witch, Gig gle Girl, and The Pretty Onewho could n’t stop laugh ing. My sis ter had herb-day party at Libby Lu’s. It is this place wherethe girls get to dress up and put make-up on like a Rock Star, a Prin cess, or a Pop Diva. Emmaand her friends chose Pop Diva. It was at themall, and I knew I would get bored, so I in vitedmy friend Lin ley over to come to the mall withme. We ate at Chick-fil-a, then Emma got herears pierced at Claires.

I re ally had a good time in Feb ru ary. Wewent on our an nual ski ing trip with the Potts inSteam boat, Col o rado. We went in the hot tub a

lot. I did a lit tlebet ter on myski ing. Ex ceptfor when mymom, my dad,Kaylee and hermom and dadwent down a re -ally high slopewhen i t was

snow ing. I could n’t see a thing! The snow wassting ing my face, and I was al most go ing to cry, un til we reached the bot tom. That was one ofthe most mis er a ble mo ments of our lives.

March was so much fun, it’s scary. It washard to make it through the first few weeks ofMarch, be cause I was so ex cited. Why? It wasbe cause we were go ing on our first cruise, withthe Bil lows. I could n’t wait. The whole 4th

grade was hav ing Lina Por ter Day. That meantwe all had to dress up like back in the old days.Grandma was here then eat ing lunch withEmma and my dad. I got over heated dur ing PE, and I had to go home. But thenext day I felt much better. Wewere leav ing for the air port, to go on the cruise. J The Bil lowswere there when we got there.Peyton and I got about 10 piecesof candy from the lobby. (Youwere only sup posed to take 1.)Our plane was re ally nice andfancy. We had a lady wait on us.When we got to Florida, we hadto wait a while to get checked in.Then we saw the boat , theZuiderdam. It was awe some. Our rooms were right next to eachother. We did so much stuff. Wesaw Joel Mad den per form EltonJohn songs, we saw a re ally coolma gi cian named James Cielen. We also watched Zuiderdam

idol. Peyton and I swam in the pools a lot, andwe made a new friend, whose name is Devon. Ihad pizza ev ery day for lunch, and I got to kissa dol phin. The cruise was somuch fun.

The Shad Fes ti val in Aprilwas a lot of fun this year. I in -vited my best friend Caro lineHensley to the fes ti val. Wehad a lot of fun. Caro line saidshe wanted to come backagain. I am so glad be causeBlair and her got along, butthey did al ready know eachother. Any way, Caro line and Itried cat fish, and we loved it. It looked re ally gross, but weended up lik ing it.

In May, our school had our an nual May Day Play Day. It was a lot of fun.

School fi nally let out on June 2nd. My fa vor -ite teacher, Mrs. Crop per, is go ing to be theas sis tant prin ci pal. I went to a ten nis camp and

a bas ket ball camp. The b-ball campwas re ally hard. It was for about 5hours, and we prac ticed and scrim -maged for about 4 hours and 30min utes, and ate sugar-free popsiclesfor the rest. I still learned a lot.

July was so much fun. First wewent to New York City with my par -ents, Emma, Blair, Aunt Lynne, andAnna. We got to see the Broad wayplay, Lion King. We also went to thewax mu seum, and we ate at a re allycool place called Jackal & Hyde. Wehad to ride the sub way a lot (Anna and I de cided we had got ten our sub waylegs). Af ter that I went to my friendCar son’s beach house for 5 days. Wehad tons of fun, and I got stung by ajel ly fish. Ow!!

Then, I went to Camp Har ri son again. I went with Caro line and Natalie Gaines. Our coun -sel ors, cabin and friends were re ally cool. The

coun sel ors’ nameswere Gabi and Ash ton.We made a lot of newfriends. Two of themare Claire and Halliewho are both ob sessedwith Na po leon Dy na -mite.

In Au gust, we did abunch of stuff. First werented an RV. We droveto New Bern forJennifer’s wed ding. Af -ter that we lef t forPar a mount King’s Do -

min ion. It was re ally hot, but fun. Then wear rived in Wash ing ton DC. We took the mono -rail a lot too. We saw the Spy Museum, a placewhere they make money, the White House, anda lot more.

Also school started again. I am in 5th gradethis year. My teach er’s name is Mrs. Gro gan. Idon’t like her; I don’t think any one does. She isre ally mean and bor ing. But my read ing, Eng -lish, and so cial stud ies teacher is the best. Hername is Mrs. M. Gra ham. She al ways sings and laughs in class.

Our La bor Day camp ing trip in Sep tem berwas just awe some. The Mill ers came this year. But the Bil lows couldn’t come. We had somuch fun, and we put on re ally weird plays, like Ro meo & Juliet. We went white waterrafting, and I fell out. Ow again!! I was so sadwhen we had to leave.

For Hal low een I was a nerd. I was wear ingsocks with brown slip-ons, shirt with a tie,Harry Pot ter glasses, a funny hat, and a sign onmy back that said: Kick Me Hard.

A Quiet Year For the RhemsThis has been an other

quiet year for Ed andRuthanne. Cer tainly thehigh light of the year was at -tend ing Mike’s grad u a tion.I’m cer tain that Ed and Janwere pretty ex cited see ingfour chil dren grad u ate fromcol lege, but I can tell youthat see ing two chil drengrad u ate was as much emo -tion as I can han dle. Inad di tion, both chil dren are now gain fully em -ployed. Life is good! Thanks to Jan, Scott,Lynne, Blair, Shelly and Shelly’s friend Johnin shar ing our ex cite ment on Mike’s grad u a -tion day.

I con t inue to vol un teer with theAyden-Grifton High School base ball team. What started out as help ing with scorekeepinghas turned into a full-time job dur ing the whole year. As Jan is well aware, I have found out that there is no limit to the amount of work a vol un -teer can take on. This past year at the NorthCarolina Base ball Coaches As so ci a tion’s an -nual ban quet in Ra leigh, I was sur prised tore ceive the Mer i to ri ous Ser vice Award for2004. To be rec og nized by all North Carolinacol lege and high school coaches makes 20years of vol un teer ing re ally spe cial.

It’s al ways nice to see your chil dren re turnhome and it is even nicer when you can go onsome out ings with them. This past year Shellyand I cel e brated my birth day in Wash ing tonwith tick ets to see the Braves play the Na tion als.I have no ticed that each year we have trav eledto a dif fer ent city to see base ball, but we are al -ways see ing the Braves. Al though I be lievethat Shelly is sin cere in cel e brat ing my birth -day, I be lieve what she re ally wants to see is the

Brave’s Chip per Jones(play?). It’s also nice tohave a for mer col legeroom mate who has Dukebas ket ball tick ets right atmidcourt. Oc ca sion ally,he gives me an op por tu -nity to see a few games. This year I used that op -por tu nity to take Mike. Itwas n’t a Carolina/Dukegame, but be ing with

Mike cer tainly made the game ex cit ing.One of the best things about col lege is that

the friends you make in col lege usu ally areyour friends for life. This past year men (fromVir ginia to Florida), who met as freshmen inthe same dorm, on the same floor and on thesame wing cel e brated our 20th an nual re unionto gether in Myr tle Beach for a long golf week -end. It’s re ally more than just golf and it’ssome thing I look for ward to each year.

As I said ear lier, it has been a quiet year forthe Rhems, but it also has been a spe cial one. A hand op er a tion kept me in ac tive for a fewmonths and Ruthanne has had her ups anddowns, but this year was our 30th wed ding an -ni ver sary. When you lean back and think aboutit, 30 years is some thing to re ally feel goodabout. It means you re ally made the rightchoice.

I can’t stop with out men tion ing our shel tie,Comet. Comet makes ev ery day ex cit ing forRuthanne and me. With an enor mous amountof en ergy, Comet makes sure that we neverhave a dull day. He has been the per fect ad di -tion to our fam ily. So, from Comet, Ruthanneand me, we hope ev ery one has a Merry Christ -mas and a Happy New Year.

Mike Joins the Work ing World

Well, to start things off, this yearhas flown by. It seems like just yes ter day that Iwas writ ing the Haseley Her ald for 2004.

This year I have ac com plished many mile -stones in my life. First, and maybe one of themost im por tant, I grad u ated with an ar chi tec -tural tech nol ogy de gree in the spring. As mostof you read last year, I was in tern ing at Hite As -so ci ates Ar chi tec ture and En gi neer ing. Once Igrad u ated I was asked to stay on with the firmfull time, and how could I say no to the great of -fer and ex pe ri ence? So that is where I spendmost of my time these days, in the of fice as sist -ing in the de sign of schools, churches, banks, and res i den tial build ings. I know my par entsare proud be cause I al low them to keep a lit tlecash in their pock ets. Al though I have a greatjob here, I feel that it is time for me to move, sohope fully af ter the first of the year I will bemov ing to Wilmington, NC. I’m al ready in thepro cess of get ting my name out to a few ar chi -tec ture firms around that area.

In a few days I will be go ing to Las Ve gaswith some friends, and hope fully I will win alit tle money. Since I’mwrit ing this on No vem ber1 and I’m not go ing un tilNo vem ber 5, I’m not ableto tell you the amount ofmoney won or lost, but ifyou ask I will be more than glad to share my ex pe ri -ences at a later time.

An other thing that Iknow all of you Carolinafans will love: I have beengo ing to a few Duke bas ket ball games withDad and act ing like Cameron Cra zies. It is al -

ways re ally some thing to step foot in the gymand walk through the Duke hall of fame. Iwould start nam ing names of the Duke greats, but I don’t want any one in the fam ily to be tooup set.

Tail gat ing and the ECU foot ball games isalso a hobby that I en joy do ing (free food andbeer, you can’t beat that).

Ear lier in the year I got a dog, a pit bull, butjust be cause she is a pit bull does n’t mean thatshe is mean. She is an ex tremely sweet dog that I take along with me when ever I can.

Well, that is my year in a nut shell and I hope that ev ery one has been as blessed as I havebeen this year and I hope that you all have avery happy hol i day.

    — Mike Rhem

Mike… con tin ued from pre vi ous page So Many MilestonesN E W S ! ! !

have al ways heard that af ter women have kidstheir mem ory is the first thing to go. There issome truth to that, be cause boy do I feel out ofthe loop most of the time. Give me a room fullof two-year olds and I am golden. That’s meliv ing in the here and now and right now “cowsare jump ing over the moon.” Ask me who thedish ran away with and I’m your girl. Ask mewhat we did all year and I have got noth ing.

Af ter do ing a lit tle re search and giv ing my selfa quick bonk on the head, I’ve come to dis -cover that we ac tu ally had a good news wor thyyear. We built a house this year. Scot tie and Icel e brated our 5th wed ding an ni ver sary andwit nessed the un ion of Jennifer and John. Theter ri ble twos are rag ing in full force among us.We are all ad just ing to Scot tie’s new job, theex cit ing new places it takes him and some -where along the line he turned an other cor nerand found the big Three Oh!

So yeah…we started off the year get ting topick out house col ors , cab i nets andcountertops. That was re ally fun and we letReese help. We would come by of ten to takepic tures and doc u ment ev ery phase of con -struc tion. Scot tie even got his hands a lit tle

dirty and added some in su la tion to the laun dryroom. It is amaz ing to watch your house de -velop right be fore your eyes. Mov ing day wasin June and we could n’t be hap pier with ournew place. Now we are get ting set tled in andtak ing one pro ject at a time to make it our own.

Scot tie and I cel e brated our 5th wed ding an -ni ver sary in Au gust and it was very spe cialbe cause there was love in the air, but notours…just kid ding, honey. The love I am re fer -ring to is Jennifer’s. As you all know, Jenniferand John tied the knot. Reese and I were veryhon ored to be a part of the cer e mony. I was abrides maid and Reese was of course the cut estflower girl ever. It was a beau ti ful, sweet wed -ding and we wish John and Jennifer our verybest. I look for ward to cel e brat ing their 5th an -ni ver sary and our 10th an ni ver sary to gether.

Af ter the wed ding was over we found timeto un wind at the beach for a week. This was our second an nual trip with Scot tie’s mom andJohn and Jennifer joined us af ter their hon ey -moon. It was a nice re lax ing va ca tion we allneeded. That got us geared up for Reese’sb i r t h d a yparty. Sep -tem ber 5 t h ,La bor Day,we had asmall fam ilyparty with abig “jump ingbean” cas tlefor Reese’ssecond birth -day. I knowshe loved it. Ithink Blair en -joyed it too.An other big

hit this yearwas Hal low -een and myReese’s cup. Ithink the pic -ture speaksfor itself.

S c o t t i estarted a newjob this year. Ithink we alltook it for granted that he would be atSIGCOM for ever. Af ter five years with thecom pany it was time to move on to a new fron -tier. He started a new job as a Sales En gi neerwith a startup out of Sil i con Val ley called Good Tech nol ogy. They take on the gi ant RIMBlack berry and pro vide e-mail and data ac cesson all types of toys (he co mes home with a newone ev ery week). Scot tie be came a man ager ofSales En gi neers within his first three monthsand then as with most startups there was a lit tleshake up and he was moved to the field as aStra te gic So lu tions En gi neer. He now trav elsall over the south east from OK and TX east toNC and south to FL. Yes, it is a huge ter ri toryso we don’t see him as much as we did be fore. Ial most forgot—he cov ers Kinston too (that isour code name around the house for PuertoRico. He prom ised to take me next time J). Heis very happy with his new role and we’ll bethere to sup port him all the way. What’s mostim por tant is that he fi nally joined me in theranks of be ing in our “30s.”

I know I have prob a bly for got ten some thing very big and im por tant but I am liv ing my lifeon the so cial level of a two- year oldright now and all that mat ters is “thedish ran away with the spoon.”

Merry Christ mas and Happy NewYear to all.

Not Enough Hours in a YearThis year has been a blur

for the Dav en ports. 2005has been the year for trips.

The first three months ofthe year were very quiet.Lit tle did they know that itwas their time to rest be forebe gin ning the busi est ninemonths of their l ives .Spring al ways brings theShad Fes ti val in April andthe Dav en ports were all inat ten dance. May fea tured

the Wachovia Golf Cham pi on ship in Char lotte where Lynneand Scott en joyed a great week end hosted by Allan and Kelly.

In June, Blair’s cousin Anna from Wilmington, NC came tospend some of the sum mer with the Dav en ports (lit tle did sheknow what she was in for). The first trip was to Em er ald Isle, NC for a week of fun in the sun at the beach. Af ter the beach, Blairand Anna be gan their trip north with two weeks of camp at AuntKa ren’s. Lynne spent the first week with them in Mary land andthen drove them all to Char lotte (sec ond trip) for Kelly’s sur -prise party. The kids and Ka ren flew back to Mary land for thesec ond week of camp. Lynne went home to New Bern to startpack ing for the girls’ trip to New York. She picked Blair andAnna up at Aunt Ka ren’s and con tin ued on to New Hart ford forNiles’ grad u a tion. A week later they picked up Scott from theair port and went to Rensselaerville to en joy some re lax ation and the Fourth of July cel e bra tion. They then drove back to NewHart ford to at tend Niles’ high school grad u a tion party. The Dav -en ports are so glad that his blood now runs Carolina blue(UNC-Cha pel Hill). While in New Hart ford Lynne ran in her 9th

Boilermaker and Blair ran in the Kid’s Run.Scott re turned to New Bern to work (and re cu per ate) while

Lynne, Blair, Anna and the Allan Haseleys went to New YorkCity to see a play and to visit the sights for two days. Lynne,

Blair and Anna drove back to New Bern for the rest ofJuly. The Dav en ports truly en joyed hav ing Anna

spend the sum mer with them and hated to see her re turn toWilmington, but Anna prob a bly needed the break.

The first week end of Au gust be gan with a trip for Scott andLynne to Las Ve gas for their an nual ICM Mar ble Dealer Con fer -ence. The high light of this trip other than Las Ve gas it self was ahe li cop ter tour of the Grand Can yon. Lynne and Scott took athree-hour he li cop ter trip into the Grand Can yon for a cham -

pagne break fas t andre turned to their ho tel viaa fly by of Hoo ver Dam.What an ex pe r i ence! They highly rec om mendit to any one vis it ing theLas Ve gas area. The sec -ond week end of Au gustwas the beau ti ful wed ding of Scot t ’s daugh ter,Jennifer, to John Phillips(see Jennifer’s news). The next week end Scott andLynne were joined by the

Guptons, their two daugh ters and the Salems for a trip to France. They stayed at a quaint coun try house out side of Paris and tookthe train into Paris and also vis ited other towns in the area. It was a won der ful trip filled with end less sights, de li cious food andplenty of wine. Each day be gan with freshly baked ba guettesand af ter a long day and night of tour ing ended with a glass ofwine and some cheese. It re ally was a great trip to be re mem -bered with great friends.

Lynne and Scott cel e brated their 20th an -ni ver sary in Au gust be tween re turn ing from France and get ting out the camp ing gear and trav el ing to the an nual La bor Day campingtrip in the NC moun tains. It was again agreat week end that in cluded a river raft ingtrip, food and fun with over 30 peo ple.

Sep tem ber started out a lit tle moreleisurely for the Dav en ports, but did in clude a wed ding in Manteo, NC for Scott, andAndrea and Steve Roe’s wed ding in At lantafor Lynne. A get-away with just the girls –Lynne, Sue, Janet and Ka ren. We’re not sure

who had the most fun … the bride and groom or theHaseley girls. Next was a re turn trip to Char lotte (third trip to Charlotte) for Allan’s mem ber – guest golf tour na -ment. Scott and Lynne be gan their an nual UNC foot ball homegames tail gat ing with the Salems, Guptons and Worthams withap pear ances by Scot tie, Kim and Reese and Jennifer and John.

Oc to ber in cluded not only Blair’s birth day, but a fam ily tripto Williamsburg, VA and a visit to Busch Gar dens. This was partof Blair’s birth day cel e bra tion so her friends Kate and AddieKate went along. The girls had a great time rid ing all the ridesand see ing all the shows even though the weather was less thanco-op er a tive. Scott and Lynne HAD to ride the “Big Bad Wolf ”roller coaster not once but twice. They are def i nitely get ting tooold for roller coast ers.

No vem ber will pro vide a girl’s trip to Destin, Florida forLynne and friends. Scott will have a trip to Pinehurst, NC to play in a Duke vs. Carolina golf match at Pinehurst #2 with his goodfriends Steve Cella, Rich ard Stilley and Keith Hicks.

When the Dav en ports were not pack ing or un pack ing orwash ing clothes they were fill ing their time with the usual ac tiv -i ties:

Blair with Ju nior Girl Scouts, soc cer, bas ket ball, dance, gym nas tics, and choir. In Feb ru ary Scott and Blair at tended a50’s fa ther/daugh ter dance while Lynne and Blair at tended amother/daugh ter camp ing week end in April where they stayedin a lodge. They went tent camp ing in Oc to ber for a re gionalHoe Down where many Girl Scouts came to gether to ex changeswaps and to learn some in ter na tional folk lore.

Lynne with tu tor ing: some with theschool sys tem and also pri vately af terschool. She helps with Sunday school and istak ing a Beth Moore Bible study as well as acou ple’s Bible study. The real es tate isboom ing in New Bern and it has been a re -cord year for her with Cen tury 21 Ac tionAs so ci ates. This is her 20th year sell ing withthe same com pany! New Bern was on theTo day Show as be ing one of the top fiveplaces to re tire in the coun try so that hashelped boost the real es tate busi ness. Thedeals are go ing quickly so call Lynne soon!

Ev ery body Loves SkylarHappy holidays everyone! This is Skylar

and I’m 15 months old and it’s my first con tri -bu t ion to theHaseley Her ald.You will prob a -bly want to clipthis one and saveit. My par ents areso busy that theyasked ME to

write their por tions. Al though I do most of thework around here any way and am a very busygirl my self, here it goes. To mor row is Hal low -een and I’m go ing to be a bum ble bee when I goto school to mor row. I’m good at shout ing“Boo” now! I go to school where Mommyworks. She drops me off by 8:15 ev ery morn -ing. I have so much fun with my friends. I havetwo boy friends named Drew and Breyden. They hug and kiss me each morn ing. I en joy it,but I play “hard to get” and run away fromthem like I do from ev ery one else. At school,Mr. Kenny plays gui tar in mu sic class and wedance and shake our tam bou rines to the mu sic.

I can say about ten words now, but by thetime you read this, I ex pect that to be up to 100.I do un der stand ev ery thing you say, though, sowatch out! I like to blow kisses when I saybye-bye. We do arts and crafts ev ery day. Weplay out side and I like to stroll my baby doll. Ican run fast and I have al ready learned how toopen the child gates thatDaddy put up!

Mommy is re ally happythat I fi nally started sleep ingthrough the night one monthago. For over a year, I letMommy get up with me ev ery few hours to hug me when Icried. With work ing full time, she was re ally tired, but she

loves me so much she did n’t re ally mind andshe and Daddy are even try ing to give me ababy brother or sis ter.

They took me and Jo-Jo (Jor dan) to Ha waiiin June. Ev ery one thought they were crazy totake me, but I was eas ier to travel with thanDaddy! I was al most walk ing. If we had gone amonth later I would have been much moretrou ble! We did aninter-is land cruiseand I got to fly in ahe li cop ter twice! We got to see lots oflava ex plod ing from Kilauea at night, burst ing into thesea. Mostly, I saw alot of sun rises overthe wa ter be causemy clock did n’t ad -just un til the lastday – I cal l thatSkytime.

Mommy is still lov ing her job as Er go nom -ics Man ager at SAS. Most of her time awayfrom work is spent tak ing care of me! She doeshave din ner with dif fer ent groups of girl friends four times a month, and she en joys her wa terpolo league, and she and Daddy have “datenight” ev ery Wednes day, but other than thatshe plays with me all the time. She did win firstplace in a na tional com pe ti tion for one of herpro grams at SAS. It was in New Or leans at theNa tional Ap plied Er go nom ics Con fer ence inMarch. She’s go ing to en ter again next yearand says she’ll win it again!!

My daddy works on a com puter. He does n’tlike me pull ing out wires but I love to see howag gra vated it makes him. He sits in a big chairthat spins around. I like sit ting in it be cause it’slike a fair ride. Daddy is gone quite a bit – if Ipay close at ten tion, I see him make a cameo ap -

pear ance run ning through air ports on theDora the Ex plorer show on Nickleodeon. He brings me back room keys be cause Ilove lit tle plas tic cards. He says that I’m acheap date now, but hopes I get over this lit tleplas tic card is sue. Per son ally, I re ally like putt -ing them in my purse and tak ing them back outagain. He keeps try ing to trip me by roll ing a

ball at my feet. At first I hu -mored him with my soc cermoves, but then I learnedto pick up the ball andthrow it at him. That seemsto have stopped his ballob ses sion. I like to rip thelo gos off his soc cer jer seywhen he co mes homecom plain ing about therefereeing at Jo-Jo’s soc cergames. If only I could justas eas ily rip off the smell he brings home af ter prac tice!He and Jo- Jo must like it

though be cause they seem to do it an aw ful lot. Our dog gies, Guinness and Astro, are still

very hy per! I’ve ac tu ally morphed them intoone huge beast that I call Go-Go. They are toobig for me to play with be cause they knock medown. I like to feed them my food out of myhigh chair and when I get a chance I try to eattheir de li cious food as well.

Jo-Jo will tell you about his year him self. Ilove my brother so much and I try to hug himwhen ever I can. He is get ting very big andknows about al most ev ery thing. At first heseemed to be scared of me, maybe he thought itwas a Hal low een trick, but I’m not, I’m a Hal -low een treat.

Mommy wants to take me out in the babyjog ger so that she can get some ex er cise. Byebye, and here’s a kiss! xx (smack).

    Skylar in Ha waii

Many NewsOne of the ex cit ing things

that hap pened to me this yearwas my dad took me to Ha waii.It was a very long plane rideover there but it was def i nitelyworth it. When we fi nally gotthere Kat, my dad, Skylar, and Igot on a cruise ship. We got to see many of theis lands of Ha waii. When we went to PhanningIs land it was kind of sad how they lived. Manyof them left their home is land (which had elec -tric ity) to come to this place. Many of thepeo ple lived off of sell ing co co nuts and har -vest ing sea weed. An other ex cit ing thing waswhen all of us got to go on a he li cop ter ride. Iac tu ally saw the red hot lava meet ing theocean. It was re ally cool and I was sur prised tolearn that Skylar was fine in the he li cop ter. Sheis so com fort able in a he li cop ter that she got togo on an other one in Maui while I was in thecabin sick. I was sad to leave that place, but Iwas also glad to come home.

The day af ter school started Cameron cameto Ra leigh. I was happy he got to come to myhouse and play video games with me, but hecould n’t sleep over be cause school had juststarted.

An other great thing was Andrea’s wed ding. It was re ally fun. All the guys got to go to aGo-kart place and race each other. When wewere done rac ing I got to play around in the ar -cade. I even got a keychain mummy from the

tick ets. At the re hearsal din ner I made a toastI will make sure Steve Roe will al ways re -mem ber. When the day of the wed dingcame the wed ding party got in this hugelimo bus it was re ally cool. At the ac tualwed ding I got to be a Ju nior Grooms man.It is a lot better than be ing the ring bearer.

Tania and JeffWe have had a jam packed year! We

bought a house and ren o vated parts ofit, in clud ing the kitchen. I could stopthere be cause if you have ever donethat you know that it can be hec tic.Wedid not live there while we were do ingit so it could have been worse. In themidst of it all, we had a true nutcase tryto buy our old house, but it all turnedout for the better.

We trav eled a bunch this year fromSag Har bor, NY all the way to the other side to San Juan Is lands in Wash ing -

ton. I had never been that far west in the US be fore, and it isbeau ti ful.

As Kristi be comes more of a teen ager we see her less, but wehave en joyed the new est ad di tion to the Malik fam ily, Skylar, and Jor dan is al ready plan ning his birth day party for next year at our house. We look for ward to any fu ture ad di tions to this fam ily.

Speak ing of that, Andrea and Steve’s wed ding was great and, as Ka ren said, you know it is a good wed ding when Janet is inthe soul train line. Nawal, Treeva, and Vyan came over from theUK for the wed ding and stayed with us for the brief time thatthey were here, and it was won der ful to see them.

Busi ness is good. I am still with Med i cal Web and havelaunched an other business , cal led The V Bag(www.thevbag.com). This busi ness cel e brates women’s sex ualhealth by giv ing them a lux u ri ous bag in which to place cer tainper sonal items. This is an un-rated news let ter so I will stopthere.

And, of course, it would not be the news with out men tion ingGalt. He passed his cer tif i ca tion to be a ther apy dog and he is

now a Ca nine Good Cit i zen. We arevery proud of the boy. We just hope hedoes not knock an old lady down on his first trip to the nurs ing home!

    I’ll Do Anything To Get A Kuchen!When I write

my an nual ar ti clefor the HaseleyHer ald , I be -come stuck intime. So, be fore I be come un stuck, here are the fewthings that mightbe of in ter est tothe HaseleyClan. But , tospeak frankly,I’ve got to do this ar ti cle or else I

don’t get any home made ku chen (Ger man cof fee cake) fromAunt Ku chen—aka, Aunt Ka ren. (Visit www.thehaseleys.comfor the rec ipe.)

For the past year, 12 months, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600min utes, or 31,536,000 sec onds, I have good news and badnews.

To be gin, the bad news in de scend ing or der of im por tance is:1. For the year pre vi ous to this one, I re -ported that my job with the U.S.De part ment of Home land Se cu rity is“Hell on Earth.” Well, my job’s onlygot ten worse. Enough said. 2. For theonly time since I was about six yearsold, I have n’t gone fish ing once—NotOnce! Now that I think about it, not go -ing fish ing is more im por tant thanhav ing a lousy job. Enough said.

Okay, now for the goodnews—which is where I and my

Haseley Clan fam ily and friendsshould re ally fo cus—also in de scend -ing or der of im por tance: 1. Be cause Iam still stuck in time on Oc to ber 23,2005, and stuck on Ka ren (the mosttol er ant-of-Jeffrey hu man be ing who

walks the earth), we’ve now been see ing each other for 5 years,9 months, 22 days, 18 hours, 25 min utes, and 35 sec onds. 2. Al -though Ka ren is a very pri vateper son (Yes, she is!), who dis dainspub lic pro nounce ments, for the re -cord, “I do love Ka ren.” 3. De spiteher mul ti tude of time-con sum ing in -ter ests for her fam ily, her friends, her cats, her team mates, her cli en -te le , her co work ers , and herem ploy ers, Ka ren does share her af -fec tion, time, and good deeds withme. (Put an other way, al though Idon’t re ally have any big Ka -ren-Jeffrey events to re port, we’vere ally en joyed and ap pre ci ated eachother’s com pany.) 4. The one eventthat I most en joyed with Ka ren wasac tu ally a Haseley Clan event—Niles’ grad u a tion party. Con grat u la -tions, Niles! All the best! 5. At last, the ren o va tions and re mod el ing of

my house have be gun. The plan in cludes a newbath room as part of a to tally new up stairs, anewly ex panded din ing room, a new kitchen ad -di tion, re plac ing the old sid ing with new,re-in su lat ing much of the house, a new frontporch, a new drive way, up grad ing the elec tri calser vice. . .and on. . .and on. . .all for a lot lessmoney than buy ing a new house. As of threedays ago, the up stairs de mo li tion was done andfram ing has be gun. (I’ll have more to say at thetime the 2006 Haseley Her ald is pub lished—orhave I said too much al ready?).

Good news or oth er wise, enough said. (Be -sides, my fin gers are get ting tired.)

And now, I am un stuck in time with Ka ren. ..36 sec onds. . .37 sec onds. . .38 sec onds. . .

“Auntie” Ka ren’s Travels2005 has been an

event ful, busy year. Asusual, my year started outby go ing to Grifton in No -vem ber to work on theHaseley Her ald wi th

Mom, en joy Thanksgiving with the wholefam ily and give out the an nual Christ mas or na -ments which Erin and Emma helped me make.Next came Christ mas spent at Lynne, Scott and Blair’s and then back to Grifton for Christ masdin ner.

Jan u ary, Feb ru ary and March were busywith vol ley ball play ing, work and find ing time tospend with Jeffrey. At thebe gin ning of March, myfriends Harry and El len Dan were fi nally given a date topick up their twins in China.I had vol un teered to as sistlast year, and they gave methe honor of ask ing me tojoin them on this mem o ra -ble oc ca sion. I went alongas the of fi cial “Auntie Ka -ren” and of f i c ia lpho tog ra pher. I was be gin -ning to think I was turn inginto my mother since I was car ry ing my cam -era and Harry and El len’s to doc u ment the trip. This trip was one I truly will never for get.

China has changed tre men dously since El -len and I were there al most ten years ago. TheWall once again was the high light of thesightsee ing trips, though we did visit manyplaces that were new to me. Af ter a day and a

half in Beijing, the four of us (Wayne, the best man in H & E’s wed ding alsoac com pa nied us) trav eled to Nanchangto get the twin girls. It still amazes mehow tiny the girls were when we gotthem. They are still tiny, com par a tivelyspeak ing, but the amount of de vel op -ment they have gone through is justamaz ing. I know Harry and El len willtalk about the girls more, so I’ll leave itat that.

We re turned from China the last dayof March, then April took Jeffrey and me to the

Shad Fes ti val and thenI went to my s ta teconference. May wasbusy get ting ready forsum mer camp at work.June brought Blair andAnna to stay with mefor two weeks to at tend our first ses sion ofCre ative Kids Camp.As it turns out, Lynnewas also here the firstweek and since I wasshort a staff mem ber Iput Lynne to work atthe camp, work ing

with a spe cial needs child en rolled in camp. Ithink Lynne ac tu ally en joyed the ex pe ri ence, and she got to wit ness first hand what the campwas like. Anna and Blair en joyed them selvesand made some new friends. Their fa vor itenew ac quain tances, though, were the twins.

The “Rome-ing” Frank fortsWhat a busy but ex cit ing year this

has been, and it is n’t over yet. Gaynor and I wereaway from Kinston for about 11 weeks so far.“Do ing what?”, you may ask. Va ca tion ing, andvis it ing fam ily and friends in the USA and Eu -rope. We will be brief and just share thehigh lights in chro no log i cal or der.

In March we spent a week in Florida, vis it ingrel a tives in Jack son ville and Or lando, and aKinston friend who moved to Winterhaven. Thiswas fol lowed by a three-week trip to Hol land tosee Hans’ rel a tives, and Swansea (Wales) to visitGaynor’s fam ily, and to at tend the wed ding of the daugh ter of Gaynor’s niece, Sheila. We had agreat visit, and it was good to see ev ery one. InJuly we vacationed a week in our Myr tle Beachtime-share with our daugh ter Mary, Drue, and their six chil dren. That was a fun time for ev ery one, and we had Au gust to re coverto get ready for a very busy Sep tem ber.

In early Sep tem ber we went to New York City for three daysto see our son Pat rick, who has as pi ra tions to be on Broad way,per form in an “off Broad way” thea tre some songs he and aKinston friend wrote. Three of Pat rick’s friends helped in thispro duc tion, and he was asked to give re peat per for mances,

sched uled for No -vem ber 4 and 11.Good luck to Pat -rick. He plans to is sue a CD laterthis year.

Af ter a two-week rest wewere off to At lanta for Andreaand Steve Roe’s wed ding, which was at tended by many mem bersof the fam ily and ex tended fam -ily, in clud ing the Haseley clan. Iam sure Andrea and Steve willre port de tails of this great eventin their HH ar ti cle, so all wewant to say is that it was a greatand fun event, the high light of

2005. We wish Andrea and Steve health and hap pi ness in theirshared life.

To re cover from the wed ding we thought a va ca tion inTuscany would do, so we sched uled an 18-day va ca tion in It aly.The first two weeks we stayed in a villa in Tuscany we sharedwith some of Gaynor’s In ter na tional Women’s Club friends, and the four days in Rome were just the two of us. From the villa wemade trips to many very in ter est ing me di eval places, in clud ingAssisi, San Gimignano, Montecino, Siena, Elba (Na po leon ex -iled here), Flor ence, and Ven ice. In Rome we of course did theVat i can (St. Pe ter’s ba sil ica, Sis tine Cha pel, etc.) and tookguided tours which in cluded the An cient Ro man ru ins. We alsotook a day trip to Pom peii. These were very mem o ra ble ex pe ri -ences, and we took a lot of pic tures.

We are look ing for ward to get ting ac quainted with our newgrand daugh ter, Vic to ria, who was born to our daugh ter Su sanand her hus band Dave Winningham in No vem ber. An earlyChrist mas pres ent! We are also look ing for ward to hav ing theMalik and Frank fort fam ily mem bers home for Thanksgivingand Christ mas. We would like to wish ev ery one a Merry Christ -mas and a blessed 2006.

It’s been a busy, in ter est ing, and so cia bleyear high lighted by trips to seven week endcon tra dance events; four trips to wed dings,an ni ver sary and grad u a tion par ties; vis its tofriends and rel a tives in Vir ginia where Isoaked up fam ily ge ne a log i cal lore; in ter -spersed with nu mer ous his tory pro jects inRensselaerville and host ing 43 dif fer entguests (not all at the same time!).

The first trip of the year was over NewYears to Pine Knoll Shores on the At lan tic

Ocean where I was sur prised to see a young woman who nowlives in Cary, NC who I had danced with in Al bany last year. Wemet again in Sep tem ber at the Adirondack Dance Weekend atLake George. Many of the con tra danc ers are “dance gyp sies”,trav el ing around to dif fer ent dances and week ends. I am get tingto be one of them my self, hav ing Fre quent Flown north toSaratoga, NY, in Feb ru ary to the Dance Flurry and driven tosouth of Char lotte (Gypsy Melt down) and to north ofWinston-Sa lem (Spring Dance Ro mance) for other week ends in the spring. At the lat ter, three of my nine cabin mates were fromMary land and two of them drove up to Ver mont where we raninto each other at the Dawn Dance in Brattleboro over La borDay. (Danc ing be gins at 8 p.m. and ends when the sun co mes upat 7 a.m. the next day.) I was a vol un teer at the Dance Flurry andat the Adirondack Dance Week end.

Al though I hate to ad mit that Jack is right, con tra danc ers arevery friendly, like ex tended fam ily, ac cept ing of new com ers,you don’t have to know how to dance (be cause they teach eachdance) and it’s OK to go as a sin gle be cause the tra di tion is todance with a dif fer ent per son for each dance. One of the re sultsof that tra di tion is that I learned to waltz better from some oneelse’s hus band dur ing one week end.

In ad di tion to all these week end events, Jack and I went tonu mer ous lo cal con tra dances and folk mu sic con certs in the Al -bany and Saratoga area and I am re ally go ing to miss these folksdur ing the six months I will be back in Grifton.

I no tice I am be gin ning to sound like mybrother, go ing on and on about con tra danc ing!

But I do need to add an other note on thissub ject: Blair and Bill Coo per (rel a tives fromSanta Fe, NM) met us at the Dawn Dance overLa bor Day which was only 45 min utes fromtheir son Chris’ house in Ver mont. Blair andBill spent much of the sum mer and fall withChris but this was the only time we could co or -di nate our sched ules to meet each other and itwas one of the high lights of the year to be withthem.

I flew to Char lotte in June where Allanthrew a sur prise birth day/an ni ver sary party for Kelly with 150 guests (in clud ing ev ery one’skids). The theme was Las Ve gas and ev ery onewas given $3000 of play money with which togam ble. They had crou pi ers and dec o ra tionslike Las Ve gas ca si nos, and Erin (age 10)helped plan ac tiv i ties that the youn ger kidscould en joy with out the chal lenge of math forgam bling. They had a stroll ing ma gi cian, akaraoke, free lim ou sine rides, gifties kidscould buy with their play money, and an auc -tion at the end of the eve ning where very niceitems could be kept by the win ning bid ders.Quite an imag i na tive party, and fun.

Over July 4 t h both houses inRensselaerville were full with Mill ers, Dav en -ports (in clud ing Scott’s niece Anna), Ka renand Jeffrey, Dans (Harry and El len and newbaby twins), Sue’s friend An nie and her sonDustin, Mi chael, Belle, and Jon a than Fosburyand Olsons (Patty and Bob from Sutter Creek,CA). Patty and Bob spent most of the sum merand fall with Jack and me and she and I made agood team with co op er a tive gro cery shop pingand co op er a tive din ner preps when they werenot off on a side trip some where.

The week end af ter July 4th was an other bigfam ily party to cel e brate Niles’ high school

grad u a tion. This one was at the Mill ers’ housewith two huge tents set up on the front lawn, prob a bly close to 200 guests (in clud ing kids of all ages), and a “pulled pork” meal ca tered bytheir friends the Silvermans. (That is whatnorth ern ers call what south ern ers call “pigpick ing”, only the meat is al ready chopped upand served in stain less steel pans in stead ofstill be ing onthe pig.)

J e n n i f e rDav en po r t ’swed ding was in Au gust (wel -come to thefam i ly, JohnPhi l l ips!) . Idrove to NewHart ford topick up Sue,then to Ka ren’sin Mary land topick her up tooand we al lstayed at Lynne and Scott’s inNew Bern, NC, for the wed ding week end. I was sur prised tofind that I (“grand mother”) was to be es corteddown the aisle be fore the moth ers of the wed -ding cou ple. We en joyed par ty ing wit
