"Transformed" - Fall Spiritual Growth Campaign
We are in the midst of our Fall Spiritual Growth
Campaign - "Transformed!" Anchored in the apostle
Paul’s profound truth in Romans 12:2 - “Do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern
what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and
perfect.” This campaign is exploring what the Bible has to
say about essential areas of our lives: Spiritual, Physical,
Mental, Emotional, Relational, Financial, and Vocational.
We are seeking God’s truth in these seven areas in our
daily readings and small groups. Don’t miss out on what
God is going to do through this campaign. You will be
encouraged and helped. As a church, we will see God do
incredible things.

Pastor’s Notes -
The "Activity of the Holy Spirit"
- Some Theology, Doctrine and History from the Pastor's Papers
When United Methodists seek to be approved as Local
Pastors or commissioned on their way to becoming Ordained
Elders in the denomination, we are required to answer a
series of theological questions, and expected to answer them
in such a way that we confirm our theological understanding
of the subject and our knowledge of United Methodist
doctrine, history and polity and give evidence from the
Scriptures.
I thought it might be interesting (and something quite
different from what you generally hear from me in the
newsletter) to reprint here for you my answer to one of the
many questions I have had to answer en-route to being
commissioned for elder's status.
Question: What is your conception of the activity of the
Holy Spirit in personal faith, in the community of
believers, and in responsible living in the world?
Charles Wesley wrote about the necessity in our lives of the
revelatory nature of God's Spirit. Without the Spirit we
cannot know, we cannot grasp, we cannot accept what God
offers.: Spirit of faith, come down reveal the things of God,
And make to us the Godhead known and witness with the
blood. -- 'Tis thine the blood to apply and give us eyes to
see, Who did for every sinner die hath surely died for me. --
No one can truly say that Jesus is the Lord, Unless thou take
the veil away and breathe the living Word. -- Then, only
then, we feel our interest in his blood, And cry with joy
unspeakable "Thou art my Lord, My God!"
In the Articles of Religion the article on the Holy Spirit
speaks about three general categories of the Spirit's activities:
First, it states that the Spirit “convinces the world of sin, of
righteousness, and of judgment.” This expresses some of the
prevenient work of grace through the Spirit. God intervenes -
or we would not even have the potential to accept what God
offers. Paul said, "God showed his great love for us by
sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."
(Romans 5:8 NLT)
Then it says the Spirit "leads [people] through faithful
response to the gospel into the fellowship of the Church."
This is an expression of the justifying work of grace through
the Spirit. Paul said, "...you were cleansed; you were made
holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (1
Corinthians 6:11 NLT) So God's Spirit is present and active
in our conversion.
Finally, it says that the Spirit "...sustains and empowers the
faithful and guides them into all truth." Expressing the
sanctifying work of grace through the Spirit. The Articles of
Religion speak of sanctification as, "...the work of God’s
grace through the Word and the Spirit, by which those who
have been born again are cleansed from the sin in their
thoughts, words, and acts, and are enabled to live in
accordance with God’s will, and to strive for holiness
without which no one will see the Lord”.
Paul said, “For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit
of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had
that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord.
And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more
like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” (2
Corinthians 3:17-18 NLT) This is the promise of
sanctification; of holiness: By the work of the Holy Spirit,
we are constantly being changed to match up more closely
with the image of God - we are becoming more and more
what God meant for us to be.
Wesley wrote, “By salvation I mean not barely according to
the vulgar notion deliverance from hell or going to heaven,
but a present deliverance from sin, a restoration of the soul to
its primitive health its original purity, a recovery of the
divine nature the renewal of our souls after the image of God
in righteousness and true holiness in justice, mercy, and
truth.” There's more to our faith than our being saved from
the consequences of sin; there is a promise of a nature
changed by grace.
We are meant to be the living and breathing evidence of
God’s Spirit and God's grace and a compelling witness to the
continued presence of Christ throughout the world. Jesus
said, "... you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes
upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people
about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:22 NLT)
So the Spirit is involved and active in every part of our lives
- before we believe, as we accept belief, and in our lives as
believers. God is the source of life not just in creating life,
not just in our salvation but for every single day, and in all
that we do on earth.
Our growth in the Spirit is an intimate day by day, moment
by moment aspect of our lives in Christ. God's Spirit
provides care and guidance; nurture and direction. That is not
to say that the Spirit dictates moment to moment special
directives to us. We have to be careful not to have some
expectation of infallible understanding and acceptance of
God's guidance within ourselves - particularly in the practical
aspects of vocational ministry.
Wesley said, "Though there is a real influence of the Spirit of
God, there is also an imaginary one: and many there are who
mistake the one for the other. Many suppose themselves to
be under that influence, when they are not, when it is far
from them. And many others suppose they are more under
that influence than they really are. Of this number, I fear, are
all they who imagine that God dictates the very words they
speak; and that, consequently, it is impossible they should
speak anything amiss, either as to the matter or manner of it."
He continued, "I allow, 'if any man have not the Spirit of
Christ, he is none of His;' and that if ever we either think,
speak, or act aright, it is through the assistance of that
blessed Spirit. But how many impute things to Him, or
expect things from Him, without any rational or scriptural
ground! Such are they who imagine, they either do or shall
receive particular directions from God, not only in points of
importance, but in things of no moment; in the most trifling
circumstances of life. Whereas in these cases God has given
us our own reason for a guide; though never excluding the
secret assistance of His Spirit."
The Spirit of God is within us, but we do not contain the
Spirit any more than the Temple contained God when
Solomon built it. The Spirit is also not confined to
individual relationships with God. Our connection to God's
Spirit is personal, not private. John Wesley said, “Holy
solitaries' is a phrase no more consistent with the Gospel than
holy adulterers. The Gospel of Christ knows no religion but
social; no holiness, but social holiness.”
The Spirit is active in our corporate life as the church, the
Body of Christ. Paul said, "Make every effort to keep
yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together
with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you
have been called to one glorious hope for the future."
(Ephesians 4: 3-4 NLT)
The Spirit acting in the church, works both in us to build up
and mature the Body, inspiring us to love and care for one
another, and through us to influence the world, loving and
caring for others.
As in our personal lives, we do not have, corporately, a
perfect grasp of what God's Spirit guides us to do or an
infallible understanding of the wisdom offered to us. We
work together to grow together and do our best, trusting in
God's mercy and grace, to live out our faith in the world in
such a way that we will "Do no harm; do good; and stay in
love with God."
Blessings!

Next Message Series - Fully Christmas
Last year we talked about how Christmas is not our birthday;
it’s Jesus’ birthday. That's an important thing to keep in
mind. Christmas should never be about our desires, our
traditions, our expectations... but then what does it mean for
us to take Christmas personally? How can we fully
experience the holiday? We can experience Christmas fully,
and completely new every year, if we keep in mind five
things that are a central focus for our celebration: Hope,
Wonder, Truth, Peace and Grace.
December 4 - Part 1: Hopefully Christmas
Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Yet it’s a well-documented fact that people struggle
more with discouragement and depression during the
holidays than at any other time. One survey reported that
forty five percent of all Americans dread the Christmas
season because it’s a reminder of an absent loved one, a lost
opportunity, a painful divorce, or unrealized dreams as one
more year passes by. So what can we do to get through the
holiday blues? That can be summed up in one word - Hope.
Hope is the essential ingredient for the kind of life that Jesus
wants for us.
December 11 - Part 2: Wonderfully Christmas
The Magi in Matthew 2:1-12 give us a rich example of how
to worship Christ the Savior. We learn from Matthew’s
account that Christ was born in Bethlehem as predicted by
the prophet. The Magi followed His star from the east and
searched out what was written about the Savior – all so that
they might come and worship him! Considering the Magi’s
example, we'll look at six ways we might worship Christ the
Savior: this Christmas season.
December 18 - Part 3: Truthfully Christmas
Many people miss Christmas due to their too-busy schedule,
focus on tradition over truth, or fear of giving up control. In
today’s world, it takes presence of mind to stop, look and
listen in order to keep Jesus in the center of the Christmas
celebration. Regardless of your stage of life, Jesus is waiting
for you to set aside some personal time for him each day.
When you put God in first place you find that your schedule
will allow you to take some time together so you don’t miss
Christmas.
December 24 - Christmas Eve - Part 4: Peacefully
Christmas
At Christmastime we hear a lot of songs and talk about
peace. But the peace the world gives is phony and fragile. It
doesn’t last. Only Jesus can extend the Christmas gift of real
peace, and only to those whose hearts are ready and willing
to receive it. There are three kinds of peace Jesus offers us:
1) peace with God; 2) peace within ourselves; and 3) peace
with others.
December 25 Christmas Day - Part 5: Gracefully
Christmas
After all the Christmas stuff is put away and everything is
cleaned up, we feel like we can go on with life. Christmas is
over until next year and in some ways that is a relief. But if
we rightly understand Christmas, it's not over at midnight of
December 25. It's not even over when "Christmastide" ends
on January 6. Christmas is actually just the beginning of the
Christian year and not the end; it's just the beginning of a
year filled with God's grace.
We will have a service very similar to what we did in 2013 &
2014 with several sections, each capped off with a song or
special music or other event.

Our son Todd has arrived safely back home to Colorado
Springs after his six-month deployment to Afghanistan. We
offer our thanks to you, our church family, and beyond, for
the unending prayers, cards and concern for Todd during this
time. May we continue our prayers for all those who are in
harm’s way here and abroad and for our country. We would
also like to say a special thank you for your cards and prayers
lifted up for us during this time of my mother’s illness and
passing. Ed and Carol Hellings

Thank you to all who participated and attended our
Missions Conference. Mark & Kim Hough did an excellent
job of sharing their hearts and love for the students at West
Chester University and the work they do there. I believe all
were blessed to have heard from them. A special thank you
to the Kitchen Ministry team for preparing and serving our
meal on Saturday night and to the Missions Committee for
stepping in and helping in ways that were unseen by most. I
was most blessed by the way that everyone worked together
to have a wonderful Missions Conference. Please continue
to pray for our missionaries and the Mission Committee as
we look toward our next Missions Conference.
Thank you, Lori Potts

Thank you all for your prayers and concerns as I am
awaiting a date for my back surgery, and healing from the
dog bite to the knee. God’s timing isn’t always our timing,
but it always works out to be the best timing. Your support
is greatly appreciated! Mary Stottlemyer

GOING FORWARD Widow & Widowers Group
October 21 at 6:00 PM in Fellowship Hall
We meet monthly on the third Friday night of every month in Fellowship Hall beginning at 6:00 PM. We begin
with a potluck dinner and then have special music, special
speaker or have fun activities to get to know one another.
We begin our program around 7:00 PM. Even if you choose
not to come for the dinner, won't you consider joining us
after dinner. Our next meeting is Friday, October 21. There
are brochures available or contact Lori Potts or Lowell Roth
for more information. Share a brochure with someone who
might benefit from the gathering. Or if you are a widow or
widower, perhaps you might appreciate a night out with
others who are traveling this same journey as you, whether
that has been for a short time or a long time. Blessings.
................................................................................................
Community Meal at EUMC We would like to begin making and
serving a community meal at EUMC.
This would be a hot meal offered to the
community without charge but donations
would be accepted. This type of meal is served once a month
at New Holland UMC, but we would like to offer an
additional meal at EUMC; our preference is a Wednesday
night so we can encourage folks to stay and be a part of our
Wednesday night activities. We are looking for individuals
willing to help in this effort. Kathy Kurtz and Eileen Voran
will be our main cooks, but we need people to help prepare,
serve, help people get their food to their tables, clean up, etc.
When we know the numbers of helpers, we can
determine when we will be able to offer these meals and how
often we would be able to provide these meals. We might
possibly do these meals one time a month or every other
month. If we have enough helpers lined up, it is possible that
we could rotate helpers so even if we provide this meal once
a month, helpers might only be needed every other month.
We would like to move forward and begin planning a
Community Meal at EUMC. Much like our summer
community cookouts, this is an excellent way to reach out to
our community and provide a meal and ministry to many in
need.
Please contact Kathy Kurtz at: [email protected]
or 768-3112 for more information. You may also contact
Lori Potts at: [email protected] or at 556-3049.
Thank you! † † †
CHRISTMAS IS COMING AGAIN!
Months ago retailers planned out and
finalized strategies and designs and
manufacturers produced the toys, trinkets,
technology and attire that we will be giving to one another
this Christmas season.
Every spiritually mature Christian believer realizes that
the Christmas season has become way too commercial and
way too much about our own desires and gratification.
Frankly, even non-believers get that much! Year after year
we complain about the situation. But that materialistic focus
is like the weather: we talk about it, but we don't do anything
about it!
As we did last year, this Christmas, we intend to DO
something about it as a church family.
We are asking you, as a follower of Jesus, to be part of
the solution. We are challenging each of us to celebrate
Jesus' birthday by choosing to live and give more simply this
Christmas in order to help others in the name of Jesus Christ.
The challenge, as last year, is to give an amount to our
Christmas Miracle Offering on Christmas Eve equal to what
you spend on you, your family and your friends for
Christmas. Last year we gave over $13,000 to four important,
life changing efforts - half local and half global. Let's see if
we can do even more this year!
October Youth News
Dear Friends,
Hello Fall! The beginning of this month
brings my official return to school from maternity leave. I
want to thank you in advance for being a little extra
patient and supportive as I continue to adjust to life as a
working mom.
We were, are and will continue to be busy in the
Children and Youth Departments!
Soup Time! Our bi-annual soup fundraiser will take
place on November 6th. You have until October 30th to
place your order. Order forms will be available beginning
October 2nd. Take a look at the order form for flavors.
50% of the proceeds benefit those from our church that
take missions trips and the other 50% benefits the youth
group and the November Soup Sale proceeds will
specifically help the youth take a retreat in January.
Thank you to all those who helped the youth food
drive this year by distributing flyers and/or marching in
the parade. We were able to collect quite a bit of food.
Thank you to all that donated!
It's time to prepare for Community Christmas! We are
in need of gift items for all ages for our annual gift
giveaway on December 3rd. All donations may be
dropped off in the Community Ministry Prep Room
outside of the developing Youth Center. We also need
about 20 servants to make this event run smoothly. Sign
up sheets for servants will be available starting October
30th. We need people starting at 12:30pm until 6pm. You
do not need to serve for that entire time frame! The largest
need for volunteers will be from 1:30 to 3pm for the initial
rush and again from 4:45 - 6pm for clean-up.
In November, members of our youth group will begin
selling "stock" in our Youth Group. For just $15, you can
sponsor our youth group and receive exclusive
stockholder rewards for all of 2017! Rewards include
exclusive email updates, a stockholders dinner with
service and entertainment by our youth and special
recognition on Children and Youth Sunday. Other
stockholder rewards are TBD so stay tuned! We will be
using the funds raised by this year's stock to update the
youth room to make it a more welcoming and
personalized space. (Don't worry - we're keeping the
murals!). The more money we raise, the more
improvements we will be able to make.
Finally, you may have seen the Youth Group Goals
hanging up on my office door, in Fellowship Hall, in the
Youth room or in the Chapel. These are both our short
term and long term/evolving goals. I want our
congregation to see and be aware of these goals as we
begin to move forward with our youth group. We have a
very young group overall right now and that leaves us
with many exciting opportunities. I want to specifically
recognize Joan Engle this month. Joan has come on board
as a new youth leader and we are so glad to welcome her.
I am so thankful for all of the wonderful people who give
their time to serve our youth and children!
Thank you for your continued support and prayers.
We have a big group on Wednesday nights this year and
we appreciate all of the support from our congregation.
In Christ,
Sarah Voran

KITCHEN MINISTRY NEWS
Thanks to Nickie Martin and the
Lamplighters Class for sponsoring & preparing the
September supper for Cross Connection.
We are seeking a group to sponsor & prepare the
December 8 supper since the KM will be very busy with the
Ladies Tea preparations. In the past a Spiritual Growth
Campaign group sponsored & prepared a meal. Perhaps a
small group or two would be willing to take this on as a
project. We would really appreciate it! Contact Bert
Horning or Barb Houck if willing to do this.
We were very pleased that so many of you attended the
Worship Service/Picnic in the Park On August 28. It was a
great day and we thank all those persons who led the
Worship service and prepared the picnic & games. Looked
like "A good time was had by all"!
The Celebration Luncheon for the Spiritual Growth
Campaign will be held on Sunday, November 13. This
luncheon is for all who attend EUM, family & friends.
Please join us.
Ladies: The Christmas Tea will be held on Saturday,
December 10. Planning has begun and we are very much
looking forward to this event!
Christmas is a perfect time of year to "share" your
special Christmas treasures, gifts & graces. There are several
ways you can do just that! We are seeking table decorators
& hostesses for tables of 8. This is a wonderful opportunity
to share your special Christmas table decor.
We also would like to display nativity sets throughout
Fellowship Hall. Please consider sharing your favorite
crèche for others to enjoy.
If you would like to participate in either of the above,
please see Bert or Barb.
Tickets will be $15 per person. Reservations will be taken on Sundays November 20 & 27 and December 4 in the
church library.
New Year's Day will be celebrated on the first Sunday in
2017. We will have a Pork & Sauerkraut Luncheon that
day following the Worship Service. Good way to start the
New Year!!!

the church service. Ordering is closed until January when
our next extravaganza begins.
Servant sign up is available for Community Christmas
2016 and donations of gift items will be accepted until
November 30th. We need about 20 servants to make this
event run smoothly. We need people starting at 12:30pm
until 6pm. You do not need to serve for that entire time
frame! The largest need for volunteers will be from 1:30
to 3pm for the initial rush and again from 4:45 - 6pm for

Our youth are planning a Black Friday fun Night from
6pm-9:30 on November 25th. We will be making
strombolis, playing whole-church games and potentially
having a shuffleboard tournament. All youth in grades 7-
12 are welcome!
Thank you for your support!

Sarah Voran
