What a fantastic changeover. Yarra Band Rotarians have much to be proud of!

Congratulations to Tony, the board and fellow members for their efforts. Well done

to our award winners; John Pocock, Bob Lambert, Isabel Armer, David Shave and

Darren Grevis James, your recognition is much deserved.

2015-16 presents a unique opportunity for Yarra Bend Rotary to lead the way by

modernising its club operations as it works towards achieving its initiatives in the

club plan.

With our club plan five pillars in mind; 1. Member engagement and well-being,

2. Communications & Technology, 3. Financial & Board, 4. Membership & 5. Brand,

the opportunity to capture member personal stories in a video series with assistance

from a recently awarded membership grant, bringing club records online and using

technology to streamline communication and collaboration are just a small sample of

ideas that will engage and challenge our club throughout the year.

The club has much to look forward to this year including, hosting the RYLA camp in

November, celebrating our 30th anniversary in June, piloting new categories of

membership all while continuing and strengthening our already established projects.

This is our club, and every member idea, input and innovation is to be valued. Next

week, 15 July, the club has an opportunity to review the club plan shared in May.

Within our avenue of service committees, lets discuss how you would like to see our

initiatives and projects roll-out. Most importantly it would be great to know how you

what interests you and how you may contribute to them.

If you are reading this bulletin and are not a member, why not come along and join

us for a meeting? Yarra Bend Rotary is a dynamic, inclusive and progressive club that

welcomes new ideas and points of views from people just like.

We have tremendous opportunity in 2015-16 to each share our gifts as we give

service above self and be a gift to the world.

See you Wednesday! Justin

We have had an excellent speaker program coordinated by

David Shave

We have produced a weekly Bulletin which has been pub-

lished on the Club Runner web site due to the efforts of our

Bulletin Editor Matt Pollard. The quality of Bulletin produced

each week is a tribute to Matt.

During the year we held our inaugural Boroondara

Emergency Services Awards. This night was well regarded by

the services and the community.

In association with the Kew and Hawthorn Rotary Clubs we

sponsored an incoming Exchange Student from France,

Doriane Remond, with Bob & Andi Lambert, Matt & Di

Pollard and Clint & Sceney generously hosted her in their

homes.

We sponsored an outgoing Exchange Student, Lauren

Heading to go to Germany

We sponsored Jordan Boyle & Krishna Adhikari to attend

RYLA

We sponsored Patrick Farrawell and Emily Nguyen from Kew

HS to attend RYPEN

We sponsored Koyla Haisken to attend the NYSF in Canberra

We sponsored Patrick Jacobs and Morgan Trencher to attend

the Science Experience program

We sponsored Tiger Lin and Ren Jay Liew from Trinity

Grammar to attend MUNA

We have undertaken maintenance work and new native

planting at CamCare in Camberwell through a series of

working bees and significant personal effort by Ed Brown

Kew High School working bees and extra work by Ed Brown

and one of our Hon Members, Phillip Naughton, including

establishing the gardens around a new flag pole which was

dedicated by Hon Josh Freydenberg for the Anzac Centenary.

2014-15: What a Year of Achievements!

As I reflected on the past year it was very evident that our Club

has been very active in all the Rotary Avenues of Service.

I’d like to take a few minutes to elaborate on what we have

achieved. Each of these service areas has been led by very

capable Directors

– Tony Boyd, President 2014-15

Our Club through Bob Lambert has been actively involved in

Boroondara Cares Foundation activities with Bob serving as a

Director

The Club has been actively in promoting Rotary on Communi-

ty Radio. During the year Jane Stott has had a DJ spot on FM

96.5 with Club Members as guests speaking about various

Rotary activities

Yarra Bend Rotary has continued to sponsor and expand our

Bright Future Community Centre (BFCC) in Kopan on the out-

skirts of Kathmandu in Nepal.

Isabel Armer spent 3 months working with “our community”

there from Oct to Dec 2014 and continues to keep in regular

contact with our nominated main local contact, Netra Basnet.

A 2nd storey was erected on top of existing BFCC building in

Feb/Mar 2015

This Club transferred in excess of A$20,000 in funds to the

BFCC bank account to fund Earthquake responses including

Sheeting for shelter and family blankets providing for around

40 families.

Donated $5,000 to Disaster Aid Australia following Cyclone

Pam in Vanuatu.

Swinburne Rotaract Club successfully applied for a District

Grant to build a multi purpose cooperative centre in Gombe

in Nigeria with Yarra Bend supplying $3000 in funds towards

the project.

Under the guidance of Justin Wibrow our Club has built

mentoring capability in Rotary by training well over 160

Rotarians now completing this program!

We implemented a mentoring pilot program for Members of

the Swinburne Rotaract Club. Nine Club members were

matched with 9 Rotaractors. A graduation event was held in

May with the program to continue next year.

Congratulations on your Paul Harris Fellowships! John Pocock, Bob Lambert, Isabel Armer (pictured left to right)

The RI Foundation is Rotary’s International Funding mechanism

for it’s various grants and programs. It relies on donations from

both Clubs and Individuals. Funding contributions from Clubs

can be used to recognise individual Club Members who have

made a significant contribution to their Club. For every

US$1,000 donated by a Club they are entitled to give a Paul

Harris Fellow Recognition... a PHF.

Who is Paul Harris? Paul Harris founded Rotary with 3 business

associates in Chicago back in 1905. To be recognised in his

honour is an honour for any PHF.

PHF’s in the Yarra Bend Rotary Club are not given out lightly.

They are well earned.

In the Yarra Bend Rotary Club it has been

the prerogative of the President to nomi-

nate any new PHF’s. Immediate Past

President, Tony Boyd had this privilege

this year and decided to recognise 2 new

PHF’s and award one 2 sapphire PHF.

John Pocock joined Rotary 19 Jan 1997, our 2nd longest serving

Member. In recent years he has been our diligent Club Treas-

urer and in earlier years was our Club Bulletin Editor. If you

have take a look at the Ian Lynton Trophy you will see that

John’s name appears twice. However, when I looked up the RI

records for PHF’s I was surprised to find that John has never

had PHF recognition. His outstanding service over many years

deserves PHF recognition. Tonight I wish to correct that

oversight.– Tony Boyd (IPP)

Bob joined Rotary 20 May 2011. Compared to John he is a new

comer to this Club but has very quickly become a Club stalwart.

He is the immediate Past President, a very capable President

who managed the Club well and has continued to serve this Club

very well in his role as the Community Services Director and am-

bassador for Rotary. Like John’s, his contribution and dedication

to the humanitarian efforts of Rotary deserve recognition.

-Tony Boyd (IPP)

Isabel joined our Club on 9 June 2004. She has already been

recognised as a PHF. In fact she been recognised twice and

wears a pin with a Sapphire. Isabel is an extremely committed

Rotarian. Her life exemplifies the humanitarian and educational

objectives of The Rotary Foundation.

Isabel is our International Services Director and in her retire-

ment from teaching, I suspect she spends more time with Rotary

activities each year than she spent teaching. Her passion is

assisting underprivileged people in Nepal. A number of years

ago this Club established a RAWS registered project to set up

the Bright Future Community Centre in Kangel.

This year, with the devastating earthquakes that occurred back

in April / May, Isabel’s commitment was taken to a new level.

Her fund raising efforts have been phenomenal. She has been

out talking to schools, universities, Rotary Clubs, held public

displays, and more. In total she raised well in excess of $30,000

over this past year. An effort like that shouts out for

recognition!– Tony Boyd (IPP)

YARRA BEND PROJECT FEATURE

Bright Future Community Centre (BFCC) is a learning centre where children and adults can meet

daily to help assist and improve the standards of their Nepali education. This before school class

enhances the fundamentals of the children’s education. We support the education of 70 children

Several branches of the BFCC have developed over several years. There is a sewing school for la-

dies and young girls to enhance their living standard while assisting them with life skills and even-

tually a steady income.

There is also a clinic named Bright Future Health Clinic, which is located in the Red Cross Building.

Within this building diabetes is checked for, along with others basics, including blood pressure

and general well being.

Led by Yarra Bend Rotary member Isabel Armer, BFCC also supports local families by paying

school fees, providing access to computers via the IT lab and regularly hosts specialist volunteers

in all types of education and medical arenas.
