What is going on in the Guns Attack?TRANSCRIPT
Another great month in GUNS ATTACK!
CSM Hurst and I continue to lead this formation toward challenging and
exciting training in anticipation of our deployment next year. As we conduct
weapons qualification ranges and field exercises, I want to reemphasize the
importance of safety and maintaining a proper safety culture in our battalion.
Engaged leadership is a critical component to managing risk. Our first line
supervisors and company level leaders are the most important part of this
process and the most effective way to reduce risk across our formation. In
order to maintain a proper and effective “Safety Culture” in Guns Attack, I
want everyone to acknowledge five observations found in every accident (air
and ground) that we must avoid: UNTRAINED, UNSUPERVISED,
UNDISCIPLINED, OVER CONFIDENT, and COMPLACENT.

In addition to maintaining a proper safety culture in our unit, we also spent time together discussing
suicide awareness and prevention. I led the training, but I was most impressed and grateful to those
Soldiers who volunteered to share their “survivor” experiences. It was my intent to focus on important
themes: Trust, A Sense of Purpose, The Importance of Professional Senior-Subordinate Counseling,
and Accountability to one another. No formation in our military is immune to the threat of suicide—let
the chain of command know if you need help. It is our shared duty to help one another always.
September was busy with the Warrant Officer Advanced Course graduation, FARP exercise, small
arms range preparation, numerous promotions, reenlistments, and company-level FRG events. I am
proud of all your accomplishments, and I am thankful to the Families and volunteers who participated.
This month, I look forward to seeing our Families on October 27th at our Hangar for Trunk or Treat
and a Haunted Hangar.
Always remember that we train to provide 1st Cavalry Division and 1st Air Cavalry Brigade with
exceptional Attack and Reconnaissance!
It is an honor to serve as your commander. Take an active role in making the Army and this unit
better every day!

GUNS!!
Another successful month has passed for the Guns Attack Family. Our Soldiers have been working
hard conducting a FARP exercise, small arms ranges, and numerous other events to prepare the
companies and battalion for our future deployment. Remember, while we are conducting these
exercises or events, safety and discipline are key to success. Leaders and NCOs need to ensure our
Soldiers are in the proper uniform at all times and proper risk assessments are being completed prior to
and during each event. Safety First!!
Gun 6 and I look forward to having everyone show up for the Haunted Hanger and the Trunk or
Treat. Thanks for all you and your Families do for us and our Nation.

Bounty Hunters Family,
Another month has passed and a few more members of
our team have departed for other locations and positions in the
Army, and some have chosen to join the civilian sector.
Change is something that is often dreaded at first because it
shakes things up and forces you to dig in and get back to
work. As new Soldiers arrive and we integrate them and their
Families into the Bounty Hunter Family, the change will take
us to a new place and give the company a transfusion of
renewed energy and focus.
This month we focused on organizing our Soldiers and
equipment for the upcoming field exercises later in the year.
We also had the opportunity to wear our dress uniforms for a
class B inspection; the event went well and the Soldiers looked great and proud to show off all of their
individual awards and decorations. It is always a pleasure to
witness the pride that Soldiers show when they are dressed up.
We would also like to take this time to congratulate our
newest Sergeant First Class, SFC Lee Carney.
Congratulations on a well disserved
promotion. We look forward to seeing
what the future holds for this outstanding
NCO.
We would also like to take a moment
to say that this month we had two Bounty
Hunters undergo surgery, they are both
well on their to a successful recovery and
will return to work shortly. Their
absence is widely felt, and they continue to stay in our thoughts and prayers.
In keeping with the theme of change, it is that time of year where the seasons
begin to change. Even though Texas does not experience the exaggerated four
seasons that other places see and feel, here in Texas it still gets colder, and wetter than before. Please
take a moment to make sure you are ready for the change in temperatures and conditions.

Family and Friends of the Panthers,
As the Summer heat dies down and cooler Fall temperatures roll in, the Panthers are finishing up
individual level training and gearing up for some great team and collective training events. Over the
next few months we will be completing a Brigade wide small arms range, Aviation Life Support
Equipment Overwater Training, and Dunker re-certification for all of the Aviators. We are excited to
complete all of this training in preparation for our deployment to Kuwait next Fall, where we will be
executing an overwater mission, unlike anything we have done before! This new mission requires a
great amount of team work and focus to properly plan and execute, and we would like to thank
everyone for continuing to give their very best.
This past month, our Soldiers have continued to attend schools increasing their knowledge and
honing their skills in preparation for our upcoming deployment. The Panther Family is proud to
announce that Chief Warrant Officer Two’s Joshua Grogan, Max Hoffman, Zachary Pyburn, and Daniel
Vinson all graduated from the Warrant Officer Advanced Course. A special congratulations is extended
to CW2 Daniel Vinson for making the Commandant’s List! We are extremely proud of all of them for
taking this next important step in furthering their careers, and for representing the Company and
Battalion with pride.
Additionally, this past month, CW2 Dwayne Tippie graduated from the Unit Prevention Leader
(UPL) Course, and is presently assigned as the Battalion UPL Representative. 1LT Kelly Holleran
completed the Family Readiness Liaison class, and is excited to serve as the Battalion FRL. SSG
Darwin Jennings graduated the Equal Opportunity Course and is serving as the Company
Representative. SPC Hendrickson is now Combat Lifesaver Qualified, which will enable the Company
to complete some more rigorous Physical Training, such as ruck marches.
Top and I just wanted to thank each Soldier for their hard work this past month. We are so proud of
all of you for your motivation and enthusiasm everyday. Everyone is getting into a training routine and
things are rolling along great. We are excited to get back to some more traditional Army training with
Class B inspections, Convoy Operations, and Field Craft. We are also launching more and more flights
from Hood Army Airfield, and there is a significant amount of training occurring with local area
orientations and performance flight evaluations. All of this training requires a tremendous amount of
teamwork, and all the Panthers have accepted these challenges and continue to succeed!
Lastly, Alpha is sad to announce that Mrs. Cheryl Duffey is stepping down as our FRG Leader. She
selflessly picked up the reins from Mrs. Phillips this past winter while we were downrange in
Afghanistan, and we truly appreciate all of the hard work and dedication she provided to the Panthers
Family. We are proud to announce that Mrs. Ashton West has stepped up to be the new Panther Family
Readiness Group Leader. We are very excited to work with her!

Diamondbacks Families and Friends,
Summer is gone and as the temperatures begin to cool down a
little we are reminded that Fall is officially here. I hope that everyone
was able to enjoy their Summer as much as possible and are looking
forward to the change in season and the upcoming holidays.
This past month has been a busy one to say the least. Two aircraft
have been inducted into the Army’s RESET program, and we have
been fortunate to have received two additional aircraft from other
units throughout the Army. Flights have continued to be a priority, as
we continue to get pilots current in the various modes of flight,
following the deployment. Additionally, the company has focused on
inventorying the numerous pieces of equipment that have recently returned from Afghanistan in order
to ensure that the company has the equipment necessary to execute any mission we may be tasked with.
This month we were also fortunate to promote one of our own. On 28 September SSG Isidro
Alonso was promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class. This promotion was long overdue and we
could not be happier for you. You have been a truly professional NCO throughout your time in the
Guns Battalion, and we are proud to call you a fellow Diamondback. Congratulations and keep up the
outstanding work. We also said goodbye to one of our own this month; CPT Jacob Blakeslee left the
Diamondbacks in the middle of this month for an assignment with the 166th AVN BN. As a platoon
leader, CPT Blakeslee helped to lead the Soldiers of Bravo Company for nearly two years and his
absence will be felt throughout the Company. Best of luck in your next assignment, and I look forward
to serving with you again in the future.
September was also a busy month for the FRG; On the 28th the Company held an FRG pool party
at the Lions Club Water Park in Killeen. It was a great event, with about 30 people enjoying the Water
Park, minus the long lines. It was good to see everyone that made it out, and I look forward to seeing
everyone at the next event. This month’s FRG meeting will focus on Halloween and possible get-
togethers that we can hold at the end of the month. I look forward to seeing everyone there and once
we nail down a date for the meeting we will get it out to all of you.

Snake Eyes Family and Friends,
Time has faithfully continued to roll forward, and September has fallen from the present to the past.
In the time it took for this to occur, Snake Eyes remained focused and productive ensuring our Soldiers
continue to train and stay vigilant in preparation for future missions.
Speaking of training, some of our pilots recently returned from the Warrant Officer Advanced
Course, where they further enhanced their leadership abilities. Congratulations to CW3 Pope, CW3
Sarmiento, CW2 Pfeifer, CW2 Kojak, and CW2 Ortman, and since their return we have been working
to reestablish their aircraft currency. Congratulations also goes out to Specialists Cochran and Wolf
for their completion of the Warrior Leader Course.
As we get closer to our pending deployment Charlie Company will continue to receive new
aircraft, and our professional maintainers will continue to perform stellar maintenance on them all.
This will ensure our pilots and ground crews are safe, and the aircraft are ready for any mission that
may arise.
Also this month, we successfully finished the Division Run and learned about the importance of
Suicide prevention on Suicide Stand-Down Day. We participated in the Battalion Open-Ranks Class B
uniform inspection for Payday Activities. In addition, we held our first FRG meeting, and look
forward to future developments and activities with the our FRG.

D Co Unforgiven
UNFORGIVEN Family and Friends,
Another month of home station training and aircraft
maintenance has gone by as we wave goodbye to
September and head closer towards 2013. Our Soldiers
have been working diligently at establishing the flying
capability of our Guns Battalion and knocking out Fort
Hood training requirements. I want to give a big thank
you to all of the Family members and Soldiers who were
able to attend our Unforgiven Family Readiness Group
meeting this month at Howze Theater. Your participation
and volunteering in this important function keeps our
Families strong and creates another link between our
Soldiers, our unit, and our Family members.
With the arrival
of each new aircraft, our maintainers have made a focus of
installing and maintaining the Apache Longbow’s signature Fire
Control Radar Systems. These systems, which are complex
electronic and mechanical installations, require a lot of work
from our maintenance and armament personnel to get up and
running. These systems offer our Battalion’s aviators another
method of looking at the terrain around their aircraft and will be
crucial to the accomplishment of our upcoming training
missions. Another focus for our armament Soldiers will be the
Forward Aircraft Refueling
Point (FARP) Exercise in
October, which will give
some of our Soldiers the opportunity to practice loading and
maintaining aircraft in a field environment for three days of
training.
Our Soldiers continue to set the standard for excellence
within the Battalion, and this was recognized in the form of
several promotions this month. We’d like to congratulate our
newly promoted Soldiers: SPC Gomez, PFC Portillo, and PV2
Pore of Maintenance Platoon, SPC Abirasniette of Tech Supply,
SPC Main and SPC Gilbert of Armament, and SPC Meissner of
Production Control. These Soldiers demonstrated their willingness to go above and beyond not only in
their military job, but also in the basic aspects of Soldiering to such an extent that the Army considered
them ready for increased responsibility. We were also happy to be able to re-enlist SGT Leach and
SGT Stadelmaier, both of Shops Platoon, this month in separate ceremonies. Their decision to
continue serving the nation is inspirational, and I thank them both for their continued service.

This month we said farewell to a few of our Soldiers who
have moved on to their next assignments or the next phases in
their lives; though it’s always sad to see people go, it’s important
to recognize their service and contributions to our team, and the
impact they’ve had on all of us. SGT Wai of Production Control
(PC) PCS’d to Fort Rucker this month as a selectee for the
Warrant Officer Candidate School and, eventually, flight school.
His efforts in the PC shop and Maintenance Platoon made a large
impact on our Battalion’s maintenance capability. We also said goodbye to SPC Kemper, who is
ETSing from the Army and transitioning to civilian life. She served the Unforgiven team as both an
Apache mechanic and an orderly room clerk. Her contributions are greatly appreciated. Both of these
Soldiers were recognized by the Battalion Commander with the Army Achievement Medal for their
service with our team.
Also, I would like to thank our Soldiers and Families for their
participation in the many collective events around Fort Hood this
month. Our Company participated in both the Battalion and
Division runs, as well as the Safety Stand Down day that
highlighted the Army’s focus on suicide prevention. We
additionally had Soldiers and Family members participate in the
Monster Motorcycle Mentorship Ride, where some of our
motorcycle riders were able to enjoy their bikes during the duty
day. Finally, I would like to thank those who continue to
participate in our FRG, whether it’s through attendance,
volunteering, or simply keeping us up to date with your contact
information, your participation is greatly appreciated.

Happy October to all members, Families, and friends of Echo
Company!
This has definitely been a busy month as we continue to focus
more on training. We have several big events coming up, to
include range operations and our four day field exercise.
The Equalizers welcomed a new Soldier to our team. SSG
Eric Moore joins us from Camp Humphreys, Korea as a Wheeled
Vehicle Mechanic in our Maintenance Platoon. We welcome him
to the Guns Family and look forward to working with him.
This month two Equalizers participated in the single Soldiers
retreat at the Riverwalk in San Antonio, led by Chaplain Woods.
This was a great opportunity to teach singles how to build a healthy relationship through mental and
emotional techniques; as well as, emphasize the importance of resiliency and coping strategies.
Several re-enlistments took place this month: SPC Nikic, SPC
Fleming, and SGT Hughes from the Maintenance Platoon; SPC
Zarate and SPC Mitchell from the Distribution Platoon; and SPC
Woods from our Headquarters section. We were also fortunate to
promote three Soldiers this month: SPCs Nikic, Smart and Huynh.
Congratulations to them, and we look forward to what their future
holds!
We are pleased to announce the graduates of the Warrior
Leaders Course on the 27th of this month. SGT Prichard and SPC
Rattley from our Headquarters Section, and SPC Lofton from the
Distribution Platoon. Congratulations to them as they take the next
step in their careers!
Mrs. Deserae Villafane is doing outstanding work with our
FRG. This month we were able to conduct several fundraisers
selling hot dogs and chips in the motor pool
on Monday mornings was great. As
always, Mrs. Villafane appreciates your
support, so please contact her for other
fundraiser ideas, community service
projects, and key caller volunteer
opportunities. Once again, we thank all of
you for assisting the FRG and appreciate all

Guns Attack Family,
This month’s SARP newsletter is focused on how to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of
sexual assault. Remember, you should always keep your guard up, and pay attention to your
surroundings. Keep in mind that Someone is sexually assaulted in the United States every two
minutes. The steps to take in order to reduce the chances of being sexual assaulted is being prepared,
alert and assertive when reducing the risk. Ensure to have a buddy or travel in groups when going to
places. If a situation arises, use a confident voice and body posture. Most important, trust your instincts
and continue to be on the look out for predators.
Some Red Flags to watch out for:
If you are with a person that does the following be aware:
- Ignores, interrupts, or makes fun of you
- Sits or stands too close to you or stares at you
- Has a reputation for being a "player"
- Drinks too much or uses drugs; tries to get you to use drugs as well
- Does what he or she wants without asking what you want

FAMILY STRONG!
We all have families! Families are the building block of every
society, culture, or religious organization. I must say this with sincerity
in an effort to get clarity. To be part of a Family you don’t have to be
biologically related to a person or group. The Church is a great example
of a Family. We are all brothers and sisters in God. The Bible made it
clear in 2 Corinthians 6:18 “And I will be a father to you, and you shall
be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” This means that
all those who are part of the Church regardless of your race, political
affiliation, economic status, or nationality are all members of a spiritual Family.
Let us move from the religious sphere and enter the Army. The
Army is one big Family. We have all been called by our nation to serve,
and the best way we can serve is for all of us to work together as a
Family. Sometimes we may not all agree on everything, but we should
still strive to make things work for the greater good of our Nation, our
biggest Family.
Within our Battalion we continue to try and enhance our immediate
Family, our spouses and children. In order to enrich our marriages and
enhance our Battalion’s wellbeing as a whole, we have conducted two
Strong Bonds retreats this past month at the Hyatt Regency in San
Antonio. What I enjoyed about the training was the fact that we all
learned about things that can improve our marriages which in turn enhances our military strength. In
the end FAMILY STRONG is ARMY STRONG!
