Dear Friends,Welcome to COCA! Whether you are new to the arts or a budding professional, COCA is committed to providing the very best experiences for your family. We are excited to have you join us.

You’ll notice a few changes this fall—to class titles and the dance dress code—outlined on the next several pages. These changes lay the groundwork for a very exciting initiative. We are planning to seek approval from American Ballet Theatre to become an ABT-Certified School within the next several years. We feel strongly that the ABT Curriculum will help us maintain our commitment to provide a quality arts education that is accessible to people of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

You’ll also notice a few changes around the building! We recently opened some beautiful renovated studios and expanded our parking with a new garage across the street shared with Washington University. And, we are currently under construction on an expansion to our building, which will include a state-of-the-art theatre, additional studios and more community space for everyone. This is all part of the Create Our Future Campaign, a multi-year effort to fund plans to grow our University City campus and build endowment and reserves.

We are so grateful for your understanding and patience during all of these transitions. Thank you for choosing COCA!

Warmly,

Kelly PollockCOCA Executive Director

COCA’S EDUCATIONAL APPROACHAt COCA, we place great emphasis on the student-teacher relationship and value a process-based approach rooted in Studio Habits of Mind (SHOM), a framework developed by a research team from Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. SHOM helps to define quality teaching and learning across disciplines, sites and programs, and provides a common language for COCA staff, faculty, students and the community.

DEVELOP CRAFTLearning to use tools, materials and artistic conventions, and learning to care for tools, materials and space.

ENGAGE & PERSISTLearning to embrace problems of relevance within the art world and/or of personal importance; learning to develop focus conducive to working and persevering at tasks.

ENVISIONLearning to picture mentally what cannot be directly observed, and learning to imagine possible next steps in making a piece.

EXPRESSLearning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling or a personal meaning.

OBSERVELearning to attend to visual contexts more closely than ordinary “looking” requires, and thereby learning to see things that otherwise might not be seen.

REFLECTLearning to think and talk with others about an aspect of one’s work or working process; learning to judge one’s own work, working process and the work of others.

STRETCH & EXPLORELearning to reach beyond one’s capacities, to explore playfully without a preconceived plan and to embrace the opportunity to learn from one’s mistakes.

UNDERSTAND ARTS COMMUNITYLearning to interact as an artist with other artists—in classrooms, in local arts organizations and across the arts field—and within the broader society.

EXCEPTIONAL TEACHING ARTISTSCOCA’s more than 200 teaching artists are highly qualified in their fields, having professional experience in their art forms and a depth of teaching expertise.

WHY COCA?NATIONALLY ACCREDITEDAn Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS) and National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) Accredited School.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNTStudents registering for three or more full-semester classes are eligible for a discount.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCECOCA offers need-based financial assistance. The annual application period is July 1–31.

CLASS TITLESWe have updated our class titles! There is a grid—this naming structure mirrors the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Curriculum, which we are rolling out as we work toward becoming an ABT-Certified School over the next several years—on the following pages to help you understand the transition.

COCA specifically sought out the ABT Curriculum because aligns with our commitment to accessibility for people of all ages, skill levels, shapes, and sizes—everyone can study ballet! The Curriculum accommodates dancers of various different body types by focusing on kinetics, coordination, anatomy, and proper body alignment and provides students with not only a rich knowledge of classical ballet technique, but also the ability to adapt to all styles and techniques of dance. And, for our youngest dancers, the ABT Curriculum uses a vocabulary and teaching approach that gets them (and keeps them) excited about dance.

We appreciate your patience as we make these changes, and if you have any questions or need clarification as you select your classes, please do not hesitate to contact:

DANCE DRESS CODEAs another step toward becoming an ABT-Certified School, we are introducing a new dress code for our dance classes. In an effort to ease the burden of this transition, there will be a grace period to meet the new dress code. You may continue to wear approved colors from previous years. Then, as you need to replace dancewear, please follow these new guidelines.

For a complete dress code, visit cocastl.org/dress-code.

Those who participate in a Placement Class will receive an electronic Placement Letter to use as reference when registering online or in person. Rosters will be checked regularly for accuracy. Current students should attend the Placement Class for the level they’ve just completed to show mastery of the skill sets taught at that level. Any student that believes they should move into the Intermediate Levels from a Beginner Level must also attend the Intermediate I Placement class.

MAKE-UP POLICY: Students who miss class due to injury, illness or personal absences are allowed to make up classes. Absences caused by inclement weather, class cancellation and building closures are not required to be made up, but it is highly encouraged. Make-Up Forms are available at the front desk, in the Registration Office and online on COCA’s website. If Make-Up Forms are missing information or are illegible, to the point where Patron Services cannot process them, the make-up class will not count toward attendance. Students are allowed to attend another section of the class if it meets on a different day or a class in the same discipline of a lower level. Missed classes must be made up by the end of the semester. We do not pro-rate classes for late registrations.
