The GSK-Singapore Sustainability Partnership
EligibilityAny Singapore University or Research Institution. Joint applications may be written with industrial partners, but industrial partners may not serve as the principal applicant/ investigator.
Project Proposal, Objectives, and MilestonesThe proposal should address a key problem to sustainable manufacturing in the pharmaceutical or fine chemical industry. Specifically, the problem statements that have been issued with this call should be addressed, or similarly themed problems identified by principal applicants.
Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of sustainable manufacturing research, collaborative research across universities and institutions is encouraged; however, no penalty will be incurred in the assessment of those projects proposals which are not collaborative.
The proposal should address the partnership objectives as stated in the attached call for proposal information: Build a strong capability and train a talent pool in Singapore to meet the sustainable manufacturing
challenges of the future for local industries; Further enhance the working relationship between universities, institutes, and local companies
through interdisciplinary research in sustainability; Enable Singapore to become a leader in sustainability research for pharmaceuticals and fine
chemicals.
Project duration can to be up to the length of a PhD student (approx. 4 years), but can also be as little as 6 months for applied problems.
Projects must include milestones at which time brief reports/presentations will be submitted to update GSK and EDB project sponsors. These milestones may include decision points at which the focus of the research can be altered given the knowledge obtained and these changes in direction should be agreed with the sponsors prior to initiation. An annual report will also be expected for each year in which the project is progressed.
Proposed BudgetThe budget should primarily address manpower costs and associated overheads with these costs. The submitted and ultimately approved budget will represent the final amount of funds disbursed. Any overhead costs related to manpower must therefore be included in budgetary requests.
While equipment and other operational costs should be included, the endowment funds have a finite limit which will preclude large expenditures in these areas.

Budgetary plans are to be provided in ½ year increments. Funds will be disbursed on an annual basis. Continued fund disbursement will be dependent on timely report submission at milestone dates and on milestones being achieved.
Review and ApprovalThe proposals will be reviewed by 2-4 subject matter experts from GSK.
The proposals will be reviewed against the following criteria:1) Alignment with the strategic objectives of the endowment fund Build a strong capability and train a talent pool in Singapore to meet the sustainable manufacturing
challenges of the future for local industries Further enhance the working relationship between universities, institutes, and local companies
through interdisciplinary research in sustainability Enable Singapore to become a leader in sustainability research for pharmaceuticals and fine
chemicals2) Impact of the proposal to sustainable manufacturing science3) Potential for eventual industrialization of research outputs4) Originality / Novelty of Proposal
In addition to the criteria above, the feasibility of the project and its likelihood of success in achieving milestones will be considered in the review of the proposal.
Upon funding, each selected project will have a GSK assigned point of contact who will assist with perspective on industrial problems and research direction.
Project Resource / Manpower
With the intent of the GSM fund to build a strong capability in Singapore to meet the sustainable manufacturing challenges of the future for local industries by nurturing the local talent pool of researchers, all manpower expenditure to support this round of selected research projects has to spent on qualified trainees that are Singaporean or Permanent Resident. Deinfition of qualified trainees are as follows:
All qualified trainees funded under the Grant must be trained in Singapore Singaporeans and Permanent Resident (PRs) at the Undergraduate, Masters, Doctorate
and Post-Doctorate levels for the duration of the supported period. Singaporeans and Permanent Resident (PRs) working on the project as Research
Assistance, Associate, Chemist, Engineer, Fellow and etc with the qualification of a Diploma, Degree, Master or PhD for the duration of the supported period.

Reporting and DeliverablesFormal progress reports should be made available annually and final report upon completion of the project, with an expectation that short informal notes indicating that milestones have been achieved will occur on an ad hoc basis. In addition, principal investigators will be expected to participate in symposia to promote the work of the endowment to their colleagues and other interested industrial, academic, and governmental colleagues in Singapore.
