Genre• We can tell that the genre of this film is

horror, it has all the clichés of a good horror film, tense climatic music, suspense building shots, blood red and black as the main colouring. All these things draws the audience in and makes them want to see what is going to happen next.

• The film starts with a a man committing suicide, this is something that instantly adds shock value and will also draw the audience in. they will want to know why he has jumped off the balcony. When the man does topple over the balcony it almost looks like someone is very carefully pushing him. He is not in control of it because he does not climb over the rail. He simply collapses over it.

THE CREDITS…• 2 colours – Black and red. Contrasting and bold.• Rippling water affect when credits appear and fade away. The

font of the credits.• Bubble sound affect suggests someone/something

underwater. Makes audience feel claustrophobic and entrapped.

• Sudden black handprint to make audience jump. – Prepares them for frights later on in film

• Chinese letters/words create a sense of isolation to an English audience as they could mean anything. Like a code. A way of locating and transporting audience to a different place.

• Violins and creepy melody build tension and eary atmosphere• Black hair of someone or something. The audience do not

know who it belongs to therefore it is mysterious. The way it flows slowly as if underwater makes it seem even more sinister. Hair blurs to ink.

Representation

• Girl is alone – more isolation. She is wearing a red scarf – makes her relevant to credits and storyline.

• The house is dull, messy and not very welcoming. This gives the audience a feeling of unease and uncertainty

• Unresponsive woman represents more secrets and mysteries. • Woman is then isolated/locked off.• Stair banister is hard cold metal which makes it feel she is

heading somewhere unsafe as she walks up them.• The further she goes through the house, the darker it gets. This

makes the audience feel nervous and helps to build the tension.• Only hear one characters voice – even when she is on the

phone. The audience starts to feel more close and connected with his character which makes it more shocking when she is killed

• Beginning there is very little dialogue so we can be introduced to the scene and take it in, also get the feel something is not right. Only speech is from the women, and it is a soft and quiet tone which makes the audience feel comforted, and shows some normality in the scene until the man jumps

• Dialogue in second scene is normal and helps to introduce some of the characters as their names are mentioned.

• The lady talks on her phone which again shows some normality however it is in a different language which makes in unnerving as we are unsure of what she is saying.

• Then there is silence and nothing is said at all. This can make the audience nervous and kept in suspense

• The blood curling screams makes the audience jump and scared like all good horror movies should do

Dialogue

Shots and lighting

• First shot is the steady pan of a city which shows us the location of the first scene, which then pans into the room where the man is.

• There are close ups and medium shots used at the beginning to introduce us to the characters.

• Then a wide angle shot is used so we focus on the character in the background, which shows him jumping then a point of view shot is used to show what it is like falling, to make the audience feel the characters emotion and experience what the character is experiencing.

• A close up is then used to show the expression on the women’s face, to make is see how she feels at that moment in time.

• The constant medium shot of the women lets us follow her and watch what she does and see her exact reactions.

• The tilted downward shot at the women shows us that she is inferior to the creature and the creature is more powerful.

• The lighting through out is quite dark and dull which is normally used in horror films to show mysterious things are going to happen, and dark lighting is used to make it scarier.

• When the woman uses her lighter it highlights her face so we can see the expression on her face when she sees the creature.

Relationships• Relationships in the opening sequence are not very clear.• The first two people we see are a couple. As the lady wakes

to a half empty bed and talks to him straight away. She says “You’re up early today” this shows that they live in them same flat which can show they are a couple.

• The second scene with the two ladies we can see that one is the carer of the other as she asks if she is okay and there is no reply.

• There are few real connections between people in the beginning scene. The only one that was (the couple) was broken apart.

Music• At the start of the first scene, we can hear naturalistic sounds,

birds. Traffic and we hear the woman start to talk. Screechy eerie violins are playing just before the death of the man. The scratchy violins builds tension and builds suspense. When the man falls over the edge we not only see from his point of view what it is like to fall but we also hear his head crack as it smashes to the ground.

• In the credits we can hear a harmonic, hymn, demonic and quite creepy sort of singing and the music keeps climaxing, or almost climaxing then coming to halt and carrying on like that. This also builds suspense.

• When the girl enters the house, we can hear creaking floorboards and her voice echoes which represents the emptiness of the house.

• AT one point we here a really off key echoing piano playing and almost like a broken pipe with dripping water sound.

Connotation, denotation,

composition and editing

• Connotation: We can see from the man’s body language that something is wrong, it is very suspicious and creepy. It is difficult to tell the mood of the couple because of the eeriness coming from the normality of everything else.

• Denotation: A modern couple in a flat, talking.

• Composition and editing: Very clean cut. No messy shots. One scene always cuts almost instantly to another, sometimes the scene ends in plain black and the next scene quickly follows. Everything is precise, the music matches the scenes, and moods of characters.
