OUR MISSION

The mission of Leeds City Schools is to develop confident, productive young people and enable them to become independent life-long learners. We will accomplish this through a dedicated professional staff committed to continued learning. A relevant curriculum will be taught based on thinking and reasoning skills. This will take place in a positive environment recognizing the individual differences in children.

Opinions and Viewpoints

Leeds City Schools will host the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Committee on February 23-24 for the Five-Year Accreditation review. Principal Michael Turner ex-plained that the committee will meet with administrators, faculty, students, parents, and community stakeholders during the review to ensure that the Leeds City School System is continuing to meet the standards and objectives of accred-ited schools. Five areas are evaluated: Standard 1 — Purpose and Direction. The school maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commit to high ex-pectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching and learning. Standard 2 — Governance and Leadership. The school operates under governance and leadership that promote and support student performance and school effective-ness. Standard 3 — Teaching and Assessing for Learning. The school’s curriculum, instructional design, and assessment practices guide and ensure teacher effective-ness and student learning.

Standard 4 — Resources and Support Systems. The school has resources and provides services that support its purpose and direction to ensure success for all students. Standard 5: Using Results for Continuous Improvement. The school implements a comprehensive assessment system that generates a range of data about student learning and school effectiveness and uses the results to guide continuous improve-ment. “Meeting and exceeding the stan-dards for a quality school remains a priority for Leeds High School. We want every student to be a high school graduate and every graduate to be college or career ready,” Turner said.

Everyone in our school knows that Leeds loves sports. During the school year, our football team became 4A State champs, and it seems as though we have a couple more opportunities to gain titles in basketball and wres-tling. Within the same month, the Varsity basketball boys and the wrestling team will be competing for state titles. It’s a great accomplishment making it this far. Being a part of Leeds High School, I’ve learned from my fellow athletes that it’s all about the effort that they put in as a team. Yes, they are all indi-viduals but at the end of the day , they are all a part of a team. It’s all about being in one accord and on the same page, and I believe our boys have that down pact. With the citizens of Leeds also be-ing supportive along with the stu-dents, it pumps them up even more. They might win these titles for them-selves, but they do it for us as well.

“Speed Dating” Books

During the month of February the library held its 2nd Annual Speed Dat-ing with a Book. “I wanted to get students in the li-brary and show them all the books we have,” Librarian Terri Leigh Gibson said about the purpose of the event. When asked how she prepared for classes coming in to participate Gibson added, “I selected romantic songs for background music. Books from all gen-res were displayed for selection on the Dating Tables.” The activity produced active reading as approximately 140 books were checked out during the event. Pleased with the response to the activ-ity, Gibson noted, “This year’s event was as successful as our first. In fact, we’ve actually doubled circulation in the library from the previous year.”
