The snow on the ground really makes us begin to think about the holidays! This time of year is definitely one of my favourites as the school and home become such warm and happy places in anticipation of the holiday season and all that it brings. I always find that while there is much activity taking place, this time of year is a celebratory time where we can look back and reflect on the year and what we have accomplished. We look forward to welcoming all of our Kenollie Community to share in two community events this December; On December 3rd at 1:30 pm and 7:00 pm we will hold our annual holiday concert, “Sounds of the Season” and on December 17th at 7:00 pm we will have our second annual holiday caroling event outside on the hard top near the playground. On behalf of everyone on the Kenollie staff I wish you and your families all of the very best for a wonderful holiday season. We hope that you are able to join us for these great events!
On Friday, November 28th students, staff and our parent community came together to officially dedicate our Kenollie Playground and Plaque! It was a cool day, but many of our Scorch Assembly families braved the cold along with our students to share in this special ceremony. It was a great opportunity for us to recognize the amazing efforts of the Playground Committee: Lori Ellis, John Fergusson and Mike Miske! These individuals worked tirelessly throughout the past three years to bring a vision for a new community playground to a reality! We are so very thankful to everyone in the Kenollie community for their generous support and are thrilled to be able to dedicate this amazing new playground space to all of you! Congratulations everyone on a job well done!
I often take some time in the December newsletter to speak about the amazing giving nature of the Kenollie Community. Whenever I am asked about what makes this school such a great place to learn and work, I always respond immediately by sharing that it is the wonderful community and the feeling you get when you enter the school. On any given day you will likely meet volunteers reading with students, working with teachers, tying up skates, supporting our Kiss and Ride program, handing out pizza, working on School Council and much, much more. The friendly, positive and giving spirit of everyone directly influences the decisions our children make. For example, at our November Scorch Assembly, a small group of students from our Grade 1, 2/3, 3 and 3/4 class started a new fundraising drive on their own (shared using Haiku Deck a wonderful presentation app!). They will be collecting pop can tabs for charity over the course of the rest of the school year! Please be sure to save your tabs and send them in. There are containers in each of our classrooms and the student leaders are very excited about their ability to donate and make a difference. We also had a visit from the Salvation Army, organized by our Grade 5/6 class, and a special presentation on the Canadian Red Cross. We continue to collect food for the food bank and monetary donations for the Canadian Red Cross. Donations will be accepted until the end of the day on Friday, December 5th. Please also remember to bring a non-perishable food item to our Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 3rd. We are looking forward to making this year the best drive ever!
We are also wrapping up our fundraising for Jessica Ursitti and her family. If you haven’t had a chance to donate
yet, please be sure to follow this link for more details and ways to get involved: https://www.smore.com/x0ch8. I
would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you for all of the support you provide to our school. This is such an amazing school community and each of you are the reason for it! Thanks for helping us to achieve our goals and teaching students to strive to “Be All They Can Be.” We are very excited to continue sharing the many ways we are supporting our school, community, and the World in upcoming communications.
Wherever you happen to be, and however you celebrate the holiday season, I hope that you have an opportunity to share thanks with loved ones who are near and far. May your holidays be filled with Stars and Light!
Sincerely, Jennifer El Refaie, Proud Principal of Kenollie Public School

Parents & Guardians are welcome to come throughout the day to
do some holiday shopping. Remember all adults entering the
building must sign in and pick up a visitor pass in the office.
We’re excited to announce that on Wednesday, November 19th
students and staff at Kenollie P.S. participated in Art Day.
For Art Day, students from all classes were divided into 10
groups,. Kindergarten students participated in the day as well,
travelling with their class to try some different art activities.
Groups rotated throughout the school to complete 4 out of the
12 art activities offered. Students had the opportunity to
explore different mediums and techniques such as printmaking,
torn paper art, sketching, and ornament making. Staff and
students had an exciting day where we celebrated the artist
within us all!
We look forward to sharing some of the
artwork on the walls of the gym at this
year’s Holiday Concert.
The students in Ms. Zbogar and Ms. Zuccarelli’s class have
been working on what it means to be good citizens of our local
and global communities. They are committed to putting into
action the concepts of sharing and helping those in need. They
have been creating posters and announcements to help promote
our Salvation Army Food Drive and The Canadian Red Cross
Fundraising Drive initiatives. Information about these
campaigns will also be shared at the Scorch Assembly on
November 28.
Beginning on Monday, November 24, the children of Kenollie
were encouraged to help our local community by bringing in
nutritious, non-perishable food items, such as canned soup/
stew, canned fruits, vegetables, fish and meat for the Salvation
Army Food Drive. Items will be collected until Friday,
December 5.
Also beginning on Monday, November 24, the children of
Kenollie were encouraged to help our global community by
bringing in a small donation for The Canadian Red Cross.
Donations will be accepted until Friday, December 5.
Please also note that you may contribute to either of
these worthwhile causes during our
Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 3.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Please be sure to take your Scorch shirt with you and get some
fabulous photos wearing your shirt! Please email the photos to
Ms El Refaie if you wish for your child`s photo
(with their Scorch shirt on) to be a part of our
newsletter. Together we can take Scorch around
the World! Have fun everyone :)
Please join us for a great community event at Kenollie PS.

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school. Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school. Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any
surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school. Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving
past them.
When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe.
Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.
Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.
During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.
Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.
Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.
Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.
Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.
Are you thinking of registering your child for Grade 1 French Immersion (FI) for the 2015-16 school year? Registration for Grade 1 FI for the 2015-16 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Monday Nov. 24, 2014 at 9 a.m. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at 4 p.m. Registrants after that date will be put on a waiting list. The FI school for our area is Mineola Public School. The phone number is 905-278-3411. Registration process A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a random selection process and assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to participate in the random selection process, and for more information about the random selection and waitlist processes, visit www.peelschools.org/French.
