Vermeer, Beyond TimeFriday, September 7 at 11 p.m.
Narrated by Steve Martin, this specialfocuses on both Johannes Vermeer's work andhis family life, covering his conversion toCatholicism, his artistic contemporaries andthe short-lived Dutch Golden Age of the 17thcentury. The film examines his individualpaintings and teases out what has come to beknown as the Vermeer style — the represen-tation of light, the interplay of color and the
effects of perspective across places andobjects. Vermeer’s paintings depict a worldinhabited by refined and cultivated women, respectful or troublesome servants, charmingyoung people and learned men.The documen-tary adds much to our understanding andknowledge of the painter, while still allowingfor the mystery and allure of his art.

ith three decades of experience in commercial television news — as a photogra-
pher, assignment manager, managing editor, bureau chief, director of news oper-
ations, assistant chief engineer and director of engineering, as well as a reserve
police officer — I am excited to join the Vegas PBS family as Director of Engineering, IT and
Emergency Response Systems.
I’ve covered a wide range of stories in my career both as a journalist as well as in technolog-
ical capacities. I took the ride of my life when I flew with the Blue Angels. I was embedded with
a Marine platoon during the first Gulf War. I was one of the first few crews to arrive in Haiti
after the devastating earthquake. I spent weeks
on the sidewalks of New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina as technical producer. I’ve covered the
birth of a nation and the death of presidents. I’ve
had a full and exciting career, and I look forward
to continuing that here at Vegas PBS.
My career has been in commercial television.
I have much to learn about the different world of
public, noncommercial broadcasting. A fundamental difference is that the primary commodity
of a commercial television system is not the programming but the production and sale of audi-
ences. Therefore, the sale of products — the pursuit of profits — is the main focus of commer-
cial stations. Writers, producers and executives have a common goal: make money. By tailoring
a show to the most profitable audience, stations can reach that goal but disenfranchise popula-
tions that are overlooked by advertisers.
In noncommercial TV, such narrow focus is not needed. Instead, there is a focus on service to
the entire community. Vegas PBS is free to make a concerted effort to represent the disenfran-
chised without the thought of profit.
Noncommercial media, while unable to create shows with the extraordinary budget of com-
mercial stations, operates with less strings. Freedom from such worries leads to unique and qual-
ity programming such as those routinely aired on Vegas PBS. Educational programs that inform,
entertain, as well as challenge an audience would die quickly in the world of commercial televi-
sion. It is for this reason that I’m so looking forward to my future here at Vegas PBS.
I’m excited to work with such an amazing team of creative, committed and talented individ-
uals who believe in the mission of PBS to unbiasedly educate, inspire, entertain and inform. I
look forward to years of service with Vegas PBS and spearheading technological change and
advancement that allows for an enriching and engaging experience for the Vegas PBS viewer.

Wyeth: American Masters Friday, September 7 at 10 p.m.
Learn the story of one of America’s most popular,
but least understood, artists — Andrew Wyeth. Son
of the famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth, Andrew had
his first exhibition at age 20, and his painting “Christina’s World” was
acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 1948. While Wyeth’s exhibitions
routinely broke attendance records, art world critics continually assaulted
his work. Detailing the stunning drawings and powerful portraits he created,
the special explores his inspirations, including neighbor Christina Olsen and
his hidden muse, the German model Helga Testorf, who he painted secretly
for 15 years. Through unprecedented access to Wyeth’s family members and
never-before-seen archival materials from the family’s personal collection,
the film presents the most complete portrait of the artist yet — bearing wit-
ness to a legacy just at the moment it is evolving. John Nettles (left)

Vegas PBSHillary. A scripted drama about thelife of Sir Edmund Hillary (Part 4)
HillarySundays at 6:30 p.m. beginning September 2
This new six-part New Zealand drama series vividly brings back to life
the mountaineer and philanthropist Sir Edmund Hillary, best known as
the first man to conquer Mount Everest. Based on thousands of hours
of exclusive interviews, the program tells the story from his beekeeping
days in South Auckland, to his ascent of the world’s highest mountain
with climbing partner Tenzing Norgay, to the plane crash that killed his
wife and daughter. When he summited Everest in May 1953 and, as he
told it,“knocked the bastard off,” Hillary put his small home country on
the map. He was so beloved in New Zealand that his likeness is featured
on the five-dollar note, and he was given a state funeral after his 2008
death at the age of 88 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Neil Diamond: Hot August Night III Saturday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. In 1972, Neil Diamond released Hot August Night, the
live double album that cemented his status as a musical
superstar and a live performer with few equals. In cele-
bration of the 40th anniversary of the original concert,
this special chronicles Diamond’s triumphant return to
the very same venue in Los Angeles’s historic Greek Theatre to perform 31 of
his greatest hits. From the fine acoustic twang of “Forever in Blue Jeans” to
the pure Americana swing of “Kentucky Woman” to the eternal sing-along sun-
shine of “Sweet Caroline” to the raw emotionality of “I Am…I Said” to the wel-
coming arms of “America,” this concert cements Diamond’s mastery of the live
stage and his unique connection with audiences the world over.

2017 World Dancesport Grandslam Series Fridays at 11 p.m. beginning September 21 This competition attracts the world’s best dancers to compete for the
most prestigious titles and the most prize money in the world of dance.
These six episodes will cover both the Latin and Standard competitions,
plus the GrandSlam Finals. The first four episodes will focus on the deci-
sive semi-finals and finals in both Latin and Standard with an up-close-
and-personal look at the contestants. The GrandSlam competition uses
a revolutionary judging system where the judges no longer compare one
couple with the others on the dance floor. Rather, they focus on each
couple individually and award points on an absolute scale for the quali-
ty of dancing. Combining athleticism and artistry, the 12 best dance
couples perform Latin and
Standard styles of dance, all
in the hopes of being crowned
GrandSlam Champion.

Hispanic Heritage Awards 2018Friday, September 28 at 10 p.m.The awards, established by the White House in
1987 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic
Heritage Month in the U.S., are considered among the highest honors for
Latinos by Latinos and recognize notable Latinos who have had a positive
impact on America and the world in various fields. The Awards are unique in
that celebrities take the stage alongside physicians, scientists, educators,
innovators, public officials, community and business leaders, and even young
leaders. Among this year’s recipients are Sister Norma Pimentel, who will
receive the Hispanic Heritage Award for Service, and hip hop Legend Richard
“Crazy Legs” Colón, receiving the Hispanic Heritage Award for Culture.
The Mayo Clinic: Faith – Hope – ScienceTuesday, September 25 at 9 p.m. and Wednesday, September 26 at 10 p.m.This new two-hour documentary produced by Ken Burns explores the
clinic’s 150-year history. It begins with the story of Dr. W.W. Mayo who
settled with his family in rural Minnesota. Together with the Sisters of
Saint Francis, he laid the foundation for a medical center that now
treats over a million patients every year from 50 states and 150 coun-
tries and employs 64,000 people. The film also follows the stories of
patients who have come to the Clinic looking for answers — and hope.
Blending historical narrative with contemporary patient stories, the
special is a timely look at how one institution has met the changing
demands of healthcare for 150 years — and what that can teach us
about facing the challenges of patient care today.

POV: Nowhere to HideThursday, September 6 at 10 p.m.Fifteen years after the US-led invasion ofIraq, the country continues with stories ofsectarian violence, bombings, poverty andhuman displacement. The film’s 36-year-oldprotagonist is Nori Sharif, a nurse-turned-videographer. Nori began by filming sur-vivors, documenting their hope for a betterfuture as American and coalition troopsretreat from Iraq in 2011. When conflictcontinues, however, thanks to the rise of Iraqimilitias and ISIS, he turns the camera onhimself. Much of the population and his fel-low hospital staff make the decision to flee.Nori makes the unusual decision to stay. What results from this courageous choice isin-depth documentation of his life over sever-al years in Diyala, one of Iraq’s most danger-ous provinces.

Jewish Film Showcase: Raise the RoofSunday, September 9 at 9 p.m.Rivaling the greatest wooden architecture in history, the synagogues of 18th-century Poland
— the last of which were destroyed by the Nazis — inspired artists Rick and Laura Brown to
embark on a 10-year pursuit to reconstruct the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the
Gwozdziec synagogue.Aided by a team of 300 artisans and students, the show-stopping build-
ing was realized and installed as the centerpiece of the new Museum of the History of Polish
Jews in Warsaw. This beautifully photographed film chronicles this ambitious project against
the backdrop of the 1000-year history of Jews in Poland. By the end of the project, the artists
had done more than reconstruct a lost synagogue; they recovered a lost world.

The Godless Fridays and Saturdays at 6 p.m. beginning September 14 What drives a person to harm someone else? And how does a person fall vic-tim to a horrifying crime? This new drama is a gritty anthology series basedon true crime stories. In each episode, the audience is confronted with crimesthat are inspired by actual cases. The opening scene teases what’s to come, namely the backstory and key events that lead to the crime, followed by clos-ing case notes. The stories are told from the perspective of both offender andvictim. The series doesn’t confirm preconceptions, but invites the viewers tojudge for themselves, testing prejudices and often disproving assumptions. InDutch with English subtitles. Repeats same days at 9 p.m.
