Interested in an Immersion Trip to El Salvador? Two places have opened up for the immersion trip to El Salvador (for 2Ls, 3 Ls and 4Ls). The one-unit course which is a prerequisite starts on Sept. 19.
The trip will take place from Jan. 1-10, 2009. Classes start on Jan. 12.
Each law student who has gone on an immersion trip says that the trip was probably the most educational experience he or she had while in law school. The Santa Clara Law Magazine (www.scu.edu/sclaw/fall2004) describes the trip and its impact in detail. Please look at that article to get an idea of what next January’s trip will entail.
COURSE PREREQUISITE: 1-unit “Legal Systems in El Salvador”
CONTACT: Professor Cynthia Mertens ([email protected] or 554.4025) for further information.

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Lunch Provided About Professor James Cooper:
James Cooper is a professor of law at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, and a visiting professor at Santa Clara Law School. He has practiced as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia since 1978. Professor Cooper holds degrees in law and economics and post-graduate qualifications in tax and intellectual property. He lectures on tax, copyright and internet law at the University of Technology in Sydney. As a result of the U.S.-Australia Free Trade Agreement, the government of New South Wales has modified its laws to make it much easier for U.S. lawyers to be admitted to practice in New South Wales. New South Wales is the state where Sydney is located, and Sydney is the largest legal market in Australia. Once a lawyer is admitted to practice in New South Wales, this opens up a variety of opportunities in Asia. Professor Cooper will discuss the requirements for admission to practice in New South Wales and the opportunities this presents for expanding one's legal practice.
