Central Office Open Desk Shifts (as of Aug. 16)

Monday 9 AM–1 PM • Wednesday 1–5 PM • Friday 9 AM–1 PM

The Central Office in Soquel needs volunteers to keep the doors open during business hours. Please consider a weekly or monthly shift or to serve as a back-up. Responsibilities: be the AA 12-stepper behind the desk, answer phones, sell literature, help out the office manager. One year sobriety preferred. For more information: Central Office at (831) 475-5782, or visit 5732 Soquel Dr., Soquel.

PHONE DIVERTER OPEN SHIFTSWe could use a few more volunteers willing to take on a telephone shift. As of Aug. 16, the open shifts are:

• 5TH SUNDAY, 11 PM–7AM • 3RD MONDAY, 11 PM–7AM • 5TH MONDAY, 11 PM–7AM • 5TH FRIDAY, 11 PM–7AM

People’s schedules change all the time so we also appreciate having substitutes we can call in a pinch and bilingual people who can take a call in their home and help out people in Spanish. For information, call Central Office at (831) 475-5782.

Sponsors, What Do They know Anyway?I am not one of those people in AA who’s had the same sponsor my entire sobriety. Over the years I’ve had five sponsors and all have blessed my life in one way or another.

My first “real” sponsor (someone I actually called and met with to work steps) had a little over a year more than I did. I remember thinking she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, and if I’m being completely honest, I picked her because she had a ton of tattoos. She was sweet, kind and gentle—just what I needed at the time. She took me to a lot of meetings and worked my first three steps with me. All these years later and I can’t remember why I stopped working with her but we’ve remained good friends.

When I had around two years of sobriety I started to feel like the rewards were finally starting to come to me. I had a job that I loved and felt established with a close-knit group of friends. I had someone I considered an “AA Celebrity” taking me through the steps. Well, pride does come before a fall and before I knew it, life had shown up. The company I was working for went bankrupt and I was given less than 24 hours notice before I was unemployed. I was devastated and so disappointed. I was discouraged that the promises were not coming true for me. I called my sponsor and cried to her about what had happened—many times over the course of a few days. Finally, in the midst of my misery, she said in a very stern voice, “Honey, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill, it was just a job. There will be more.” I was stunned, and instantly resentful. I wanted to be coddled. I wanted her to continue to listen to me whine. I did not want the solution!

What I know now is that my sponsor had more life experience and that her peace of mind came from long-term sobriety. She wasn’t being insensitive; she was being realistic. And she was right. I did have other jobs after that. I was able to receive unemployment and go to school, to intern with nonprofit organizations and devote more time to travel and to 12-step meetings. Had I not lost that job, I wouldn’t have had all those other wonderful opportunities.

I am so grateful for all the women who’ve been willing to walk the 12 steps with me. Fellow alcoholics that have been loving, patient, kind and truthful. Who have taught me time and time again, to not make mountains out of molehills.

We’re Signing Up Groups to Host BSM 2018!

Update From the BSM Adhoc CommitteeContinued from page 1

Hosting the Birthday Speaker MtgSo your group has been asked to host the B-Day Speaker Meeting? You’d like to know what’s involved and what’s needed as a Host Group?

As the host group you’ll be representing your group and will be responsible for providing: • 1 secretary to conduct the meeting, • 3 readers for: Preamble, “How It Works” and 12 Traditions,• 4 people to hand out and account for the birthday chips,• 2-4 people to set-up chairs, • 2-4 people to greet people as they arrive, • 2-4 people to pass 7th Tradition buckets.• Snacks (optional. A birthday cake is provided by the BSM Adhoc Committee, however, your group may want to bring other cakes, cookies or snacks. This is an opportunity to showcase your group. You can go all out!

The BSM Adhoc Committee is tasked with bringing a new and different message to Santa Cruz each month. We see it as another opportunity to exhibit Santa Cruz AA hospitality by graciously welcoming and showing others how we fellowship. Because some meetings are larger than others, the BSM committee is always able and willing to jump in where help is needed to perform duties. No meeting is ever left to hang out to dry.

We look forward to seeing you month after month to help celebrate each other’s milestones, to fellowship and, above all, to carry the message of AA. Bring a newcomer!

Holiday Party Planning If you would like to be of service on the Birthday Speaker Meeting Adhoc Committee and help us plan a holiday party in December, please email [email protected].

We are not a glum lot! — From “The Family Afterward,”

Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 132

The host group is selected by the Intergroup Area Rep corresponding with the month. For example January’s BSM host meeting will be one of the groups in Area 1, the geographic area of Watsonville. The February host will be from Area 2 or La Selva Beach & Seascape.

“If your group is interested in hosting an upcoming BSM, contact your intergroup rep, the intergroup area rep or the BSM committee [email protected].

Sponsorship

Continued from page 1

H&I: Service of the Soul

Beware of sponsors that give advice. We are not qualified to give advice. We share our experience, not advice.

Prayer couldn’t hurt, might help.

My sponsor would always, always warmly thank the chairperson and find something in common they both had, regardless of differences.

Eat a sandwich!

Do like I did. Borrow a God. Make believe, whatever. Because if you do, that’s when the miracles start and they will.

The consciousness of your belief will be made known to you.

When I first got into recovery at the age of 40, my sponsor suggested that I get braces. When I ob-jected, she said, “What else have you got for your teeth to do for the next couple of years?” What can you do when you get hit by logic like that?

She never said how long she’d been sober, but it was a long time.

Nowhere else in the world, in no other orga-nization, will you find the paradoxes that you find in Alcoholics Anonymous.

It’s not about you.

If your ego wasn’t involved, would there be a problem?

Back it up. You have to get both parts of Step One. The second part is about your life being unmanageable.

Ain’t dat da truth.

Call me anytime.

But for the grace of God go I.

Eat protein.

Write it down.

If it’s complicated, you’re lying.

As you continue to trudge your happy road of destiny, if you can but love enough, you will indeed stay in the light of the spirit and con-tinue to share in your loving God’s bountiful gifts and blessings.

Call someone on the phonelist.

You’re powerless!

If you want to know God’s will, keep going until you hit a wall, then hang a left.

Don’t let your feet touch the floor in the morning until you’ve connected with your higher power.

I would have to guess at the answer. Then she would say: “Do that.”

When I said I felt too crazy or too insecure, she would ask me, “What would a sane person do?” or “What would a confident person do?” I would have to guess at the answer. Then she would say: “Do that.”

Hmmm. (Pause before you speak.)

Every time I said “I don’t know,” my sponsor would say, “Yes you do.” Later in my sobriety

Things Sponsors Say, Things We Tell Our Sponsees & Things our Sponsees Tell Us

“Because you need them as much as they need you,” she said. She told me that her friend would be with her so I shouldn’t worry.

Saturday morning came and I picked up my AA H&I partner and proceeded south having our “meeting before the meeting.”

While we were waiting to be allowed into the prison, I was thinking, “What the hell am I doing here? I have a very ill wife. We were given a short span of life together and I’m here!”

We went into the prison cafeteria for the meeting and it was packed with men who either had a desire to stop using, to have a break from the routine or, maybe to impress a parole board. Men, who were not ever going to be released, spoke of their desire to know a higher power. They shared a peace they never had on the “outs.” I was floored with the gratitude that I was able to hear. It resonated in my heart.

As I left, I realized that in this battle for life that my wife and I were in, this was the first time that I was grateful. I was grateful that we had the freedom to be together and share what we could of each other’s life!

I had been so confused about why it was important to her that I go.

“I miss my long-distance running,” she said. A nationally seeded runner, it was her passion. “You love your recovery and have the privilege to bring a message of hope to these guys.”

Two weeks later, she passed away. After a break, I returned to Soledad

prison where I served for another year and a half. My heart was filled with gratitude that my sobriety and fellowship gave me a purpose when I had lost the most important love of my life. Thank God for AA!

— Darren P.

I worked with another sponsor and when I said, “I don’t know,” she would say, “That’s a very high spiritual place to be.

It doesn’t matter how many people you are sponsoring as long as it’s as many as you can.

Before you chair a meeting, read the passag for Oct. 2 from the 24-Hour daily meditation book.

My sponsor kept telling me about his god. He said, ‘Dan, I don’t know your God.’ He said, ‘I have a loving God. I have a God that loves me and he loves me however I am and I can go to him in any condition.’ I was not a dummy. I was pretty sick and that brain wasn’t work-ing too good, but I asked if I could borrow this sponsor’s God. And, that damn fool loaned it to me!

The road narrows.

Why’d you do that? (Then he’d chuckle!)

When you have a resentment, it’s like a barbed hook in your gut holding the person to you. Forgiveness smooths down the barb so you can pull out the hook.

I don’t know.

List everything you’re powerless over. Write about what sanity would look like. Then write about what you want to turn over to a higher power.

When I said I felt too crazy or too insecure, she would ask me, “What would a sane person do?” or “What would a confident person do?”

It’s your choice. Forgive or suffer.

Say the Serenity Prayer all day long.

Are you willing to go to any lengths for your sobriety?

All is well.

From the August 1988 Grapevine magazine.

Clairvoyant Sponsor?Surely some sponsors are gifted with a sixth sense about their sponsees. I believe mine was on that Saturday morning when I was newly sober. I was alone in my kitchen—you know, the place that used to be my bar. Just about to search out a drink, I heard a car horn honk. In the driveway out front, I saw my sponsor’s car. I dashed out to greet her as she was unloading a bucket of beautiful flowers fresh from her yard. “Thought you’d enjoy some flowers for your house over the weekend.” I felt like Victor E. in the Grapevine with the little sweat beads popping off his head.

6 • I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA always to be there.

Motion from the Intergroup CouncilIntergroup Motion Under ConsiderationThe Council Requests Your Informed Group Conscience

1) Is there enough interest in the community to host “I Am Responsible,” a new two-act play about Service: The Third Legacy of Alcoholics Anonymous?2) If there is enough interest, who is willing to help (sell tickets, help at the door and help clean up, etc.?)

Please let your Intergroup know what your group thinks and why. Also, if you have any suggestions, concerns or enthusiasm for making it happen.

Details: • The play was written by an AA member. Who has written and

produced AA-related plays for eight years. See http://www.recoveryplaysofjackieb.org

• The play is about the history of AA.

• All participants are volunteers. They make no $ from this.

• Most actors are nonprofessionals AA members or Friends of Bill.

• This would be a production by and for the AA community and not advertised outside of AA.

• The play premiered in February in San Francisco.

• Upcoming shows include: Berkeley, CA - Sept 8, 9 & 10 (see flier) Saratoga, CA - Sept 16 Sacramento, CA - Sept 17 Santa Rosa, CA - Sept 23 Los Angeles, CA - Sept 29 Thousand Oaks, CA - Sept 30 Fresno, CA - Oct 1

• The tentative idea is to host it some time in February/March.

• About half of the Intergroup Council and the General Service District has expressed interest in having the play come to Santa Cruz County in early spring.

• See Proposed Budget from Jackie. Break-Even is 75 tickets at $20.

Questions: • Would we have enough interested people in the area

to break even?

• Are there enough people willing to help be part of a committee to help sell tickets and help make it successful?

• Are there any other concerns? Issues? Suggestions for Intergroup Council to consider?

• Is it the kind of fundraiser we want to have?

NOTICE: Annual Old Timers Meeting (usually held in October) is canceled.
