GRANDPARENTS’ DAY

Kindergarten no 240 named after Polish Olympic Medalists

in Warsaw01.2012

Page 2: The Grandparents' Day

Every year in January children in our kindergarten celebrate the Granparents’ Day. Usually, they stage a short play, recite poems and sing songs. This shool year, teachers from the 4-year old group decided to celebrate this holiday in a different way. Two weeks before the celebration, they asked children and their parents to gather the following information about thier grandparents:

• their favourite childhood games,• their favourite dishes,• clothes they wore when they were young,• their favourite songs.

In addition, children brought pictures of their grandparents when they were their age and their current photos.

GUESS WHO?

Next, children invented riddles about their grandparents. They described their appearance and interests, for example

My grandmother has short, grey hair. She likes wearing earrings and tells me a lot of stories.

My grandfather has a beard. He always wears glasses when he reads. He also likes watching television and he reads books about animals to me.

THE EXHIBITION OF GRANPARENTS’ PHOTOS

Teachers and children prepared a gallery of the photos depicting children’s grandparents.

Children were amazed at how their grandparents looked when they were infants, pupils and students. They enjoyed looking at their grandparents’ pictures from school trips, weddings etc.

HOW WE PLAYED IN THE PAST?

Having gathered information about their grandparents’ favourite games and songs, children tried to play like in the past.

They particularly enjoyed ‘finger dancing’- using their fingers and hands to tell stories.

A SPECIAL MEAL Many of the dishes mentioned by the

grandparents have already been forgotten but the children decided to revive the old traditions and baked their own bread !

DO YOU FANCY A FANCY DRESS PARTY? The celebration of the

granparents’ day would not be complete without a fancy dress party. Children loved trying on colourful dresses and elegant hats.

LET’S CELEBRATE!

Children prepared offical invitations for their grandparents. They also drew their portraits.

After singing a „welcome song” children and their grandparents were dancing and looking at each other’s pictures.

Teachers read out the riddles prepared by the children- grandparents tried to guess who the riddles were about.

After the party, grandparents could taste home-made traditional bread.
