The Championships was inaugurated in 2014 as a “Grand Finals” concept to feature and showcase the very best of Australian racing as

the jewel in the crown of Sydney’s Autumn Carnival.

2017 will witness the fourth year of this exciting initiative, launched by Racing NSW in partnership with The Australian Turf Club and supported by the Government of NSW.

Held on the first and second Saturday of April each year, The Championships twelve races will be hotly contested to determine champion status over different age groups and distances. Glittering emerald encrusted trophies, designed by acclaimed Sydney jeweller Cerrone will be awarded to the winning owner, trainer and jockey of each race.

With a total of $20.2 million prizemoney on offer, the stage is set for two days of exciting and highly competitive racing. The very best horses in Australia will compete against some of the finest international contestants, at what has quickly

become a feature occasion in Sydney’s social and sporting calendar.

Royal Randwick, one of Australia’s prestigious and most vibrant racing venues, is a fitting host. Visitors and racing enthusiasts from around the country and overseas will witness world class racing, and enjoy a dazzling array of fashion and award winning hospitality at this grand occasion.

International interest and participation will be enhanced by another significant thoroughbred industry event, the Australian Easter Yearling Sale which is held nearby at Newmarket Sydney, on the 4, 5 & 6 April.

Sydney, one of the world’s most beautiful cities will provide a breathtaking backdrop, a wealth of stunning sights, beaches to explore, arts and entertainment to attend, and gourmet dining experiences to enjoy.

We look forward to welcoming you to another memorable experience at The Championships.

TRAVEL ALLOWANCES

GENERAL INFORMATION

WeatherAlthough following summer, the months of March and April remain mild in Sydney and one of the most pleasant times of the year to visit as the humidity is lower. It’s a fine time of year to soak in the natural beauty of the national parks that fringe the city such as Sydney Harbour National Park; Royal National Park; and Kuring-Gai Chase National Park. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is held in March-April. The colourful Sydney Festival and Sydney Mardi Gras Parade are also held in March.

What to WearFebruary is the last month of the Australian summer. Expect generally warm weather in most of Australia tapering to cool as autumn approaches. March is the first month of the Australian autumn, warm turning to cooler weather.April in Australia is mid-autumn with temperatures starting their slide into winter. Sydney temperatures average 17-24 degrees (62-75 Fahrenheit) in March and 14-22 (57-71 Fahrenheit) degrees in April.

Time ZonesAustralian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) covers the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania & the Australian Capital Territory. AEST is equal to Coordinated Universal Time plus 10 hours (UTC +10).

End of Daylight Saving TimeDaylight saving time, also known as summer time, ends at 3am on the first Sunday in April in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. Australia’s Northern Territory and the states of Queensland and Western Australia do not observe daylight saving time.

Australian CurrencyAustralia’s national currency is the Australian dollar which comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Coins come in 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent and one and two dollar denominations.

Where to buy Australian CurrencyCurrency exchange is available at banks, hotels and international airports. Australian banks offer the same range of services typical in other western nations, and cash withdrawal machines or Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widespread, although facilities may be limited in remote towns

and the Outback. EFTPOS is also widely available in most Australian shops. Fees may be charged on transactions, particularly if withdrawing from an international account. Banking hours are 9.30am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday and until 5.00pm on Friday. Some branches can be found open on Saturday mornings. Australia’s four largest banks are: National Bank of Australia (NAB), Australia New Zealand (ANZ) Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation. If you need to send or receive money overseas from Australia, you can do either online, by international money transfer (telegraphic transfer) or through a bank. It is best to organise a variety of ways to access your money from overseas, such as credit cards, travellers’ cheques, cash, debit cards or cash cards before you leave home. The easiest way to get cash away from home is from an ATM with an international network such as Cirrus (Mastercard) or PLUS (Visa). Australian ATMs use a four-digit code, so check with your bank and make sure you change yours before you leave home.

Credit Cards and Traveller’s ChequesCredit cards such as American Express, Bankcard, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa and JCB are accepted in Australia. VISA or MasterCard are commonly accepted and are both accepted everywhere credit cards are accepted. American Express and Diners Club are accepted at major supermarket and department store chains and many tourist destinations. JCB is only accepted at very limited tourist destinations. Discover is not usually accepted. It is best to carry more than one type of card as not all cards are accepted by all merchants. Always carry a little cash, because many shops will not take cards for purchases under AUD$15. Merchants may impose credit card surcharges in some places.Traveller’s cheques are not as widely accepted in Australia as in many other countries. If you do purchase them, it is best to buy them in Australian dollars as smaller shops, restaurants, and other businesses are unlikely to know what the exchange rate is if you present a cheque in a different currency such as Japanese YEN, US dollars or British pounds.

Bringing Money into AustraliaThere is no limit to the amount of currency you can bring in or out of Australia, however, if you plan to arrive in Australia with more than AUD$10,000 in

Page 22: The Grand Finals of Australian Racing 8 April 2017€¦ · 2017 will witness the fourth year of this exciting initiative, launched by Racing NSW in partnership ... industry event,

cash (Australian dollars or foreign equivalent), you must declare it to Australian Customs at the airport when you land. You may also be required to fill in a Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNI) form if you’re carrying promissory notes, traveller’s cheques, personal cheques, money orders or postal orders. For further information visit the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Emergency Services In Australia000 is the phone number for emergency services in Australia. The operator can connect you to Police, Ambulance or the Fire Brigade. You should only call 000 in an emergency.

Customs and QuarantineAustralia’s customs laws prevent you from bringing drugs, steroids, weapons, firearms and protected wildlife into Australia. Some common items such as fresh or packaged food, fruit, eggs, meat, plants, seeds, skins and feathers are also prohibited.

Vaccinations & MedicationsNo special immunizations or vaccinations are required to visit Australia unless you have come from, or have visited a yellow fever infected country within six days of your arrival. However, regulations and medical advice can change at short notice, so check with your doctor and the relevant Australian Government websites before you leave home.Medicine brought into Australia for personal use is subject to controls and must be declared on your arrival. It is recommended you bring a prescription or letter from your doctor outlining your medical condition and the medicine you are carrying. If you need to obtain prescription medicine while you are here, the prescription must be written by a doctor in Australia.

InsuranceTaking out a travel insurance policy that covers theft, loss, accidents and medical problems is highly recommended. If you plan on doing any adventure sports like scuba diving, bungee jumping, motorcycling, skiing and even bushwalking, check that your policy fully covers you. The Australian Government has reciprocal agreements covering limited subsidised health services for medical treatment with some countries through Medicare. For more detailed information go to the Medicare Australia website.

Duty Free ShoppingYou can go duty free shopping once you’ve purchased your airline ticket. There is a limit on how much you can bring into the country including the

quantities of alcohol and cigarettes. You’ll need to declare goods exceeding this limit at Customs. Also be aware of restrictions on the quantity of fluid you can take on board. For more detailed information go to the Australian Customs website

Sun Protection The Australian sun is very strong and can burn your skin in as little as 15 minutes in summer, so it is im-portant to protect yourself all year round, even if it is a cloudy day. While travelling in Australia, be ‘sun smart’ and protect yourself against sun damage by wearing clothes that cover as much of your skin as possible, even when swimming; applying a high-level water resistant sunscreen regularly; wearing a hat and sunglasses that provide good protection for the face, nose, neck, ears and eyes; and sitting in the shade rather than directly in the sun. Extra care should be taken in the middle of the day when UV radiation is most intense, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Surf & Water SafetyMost of Australia’s population lives close to the coastline and the beach has long occupied a special place in the Australian identity. Australians love the water, and every day thousands of people flock to Australia’s coastline to swim, surf, relax and have fun. But our beautiful beaches can hold hidden dangers in the form of strong currents and beach conditions can change dramatically for those who are not used to them. Popular beaches are usually patrolled by volunteer lifesavers from October to April and red and yellow flags mark the safest area for swimming. Be safe and always swim only between these flags and always swim with other people, adhering to directions from surf life savers.

Use of Foreign LicencesAs an international visitor, you are able to drive in Australia with your foreign licence for three months, so long as that licence is in English. If your licence is not in English, you will need to attain an International Drivers Permit (IDP) from your home country to use in Australia. If your foreign licence does not have a photo, carry a formal photo identification with you such as a passport. If you intend to drive longer than 3 months in Australia, you will need to attain a Drivers licence from the State in which you intend to do most of your driving.

Insurance – Visiting Trainers and Connections If you employ workers in Australia, you may need to have a Worker’s Compensation Insurance Policy. Visiting workers may already be covered by an existing Worker’s Compernsation Insurance Policy taken out by their employer in their usual business jurisdiction. Trainers should make enquiries with their insurer or broker regarding the territorial limits of cover offered by any existing Worker’s Compensation Policy’. Visiting Trainers are required to have Public Liability & Professional Indemnity insurance (“PLI/PI”) that is sufficient to cover their racing and horse activities whilst in Australia. Visiting Trainers should make enquiries of their insurer or broker regarding the territorial limits and adequacy of any existing PLI/PI policy held. It is recommended that Visiting Trainers and horse connections also contact their broker or insurer to ensure that they have appropriate insurance arrangements in place to cover travel or non-work related injury and illness while in Australia.
