Each doctoral student belongs to a doctoral programme. The Graduate School has four programmes:

The University of Vaasa is a multidisciplinary business-oriented university. Our strategic areas are fi nance, man-agement, energy and multilingualism. We educate respon-sible leaders and experts for international assignments.

The University has a Graduate School, which organises general and introductory courses for all post-graduates. The Graduate School ensures that all doctoral students have the opportunity to pursue high-quality doctoral stud-ies.

The doctoral programmes prepare students for high-level independent research work. Studies consist of gen-eral studies and methods, primary subject studies, optional studies and a doctoral thesis. Students are expected to graduate as doctors in four years.

The Doctoral Programme in Administrative Sciences is an interdisciplinary programme that educates doctor-al-level experts and independent researchers mainly for positions in the public sector, but also for positions in the private sector.

The programme utilises the scientifi c resources of the research fi elds in the Unit of Administrative Sciences.

The contents of the programme are decided upon by the groups of the programme. The major subjects are: regional studies, public management, public law, and social and health management.

Students of the Doctoral Programme in Administrative Sciences complete a Doctor of Administrative Sciences, degree.

The Doctoral Programme in Business Studies produces Doctors of Science in Economics and Business Admin-istration, who are well prepared for demanding expert and management roles, as well as for careers in aca-demia.

The University of Vaasa is one of the oldest higher ed-ucation institutions of business studies in Finland and the Faculty of Business Studies has a long tradition of high-quality graduate education, both nationally and in-ternationally.

The programme offers doctoral studies with the follow-ing majors: management and organisation, accounting and fi nance, marketing, business law and economics.

The doctoral programme collaborates closely with na-tional graduate schools, which organise national and in-ternational events, courses and seminars. There is also an active network of international partners consisting of organisations and universities.

The Doctoral Programme in Languages and Commu-nication educates competent scientifi c experts in lan-guages and communication with national and interna-tional connections.

The programme offers doctoral studies with the fol-lowing majors: English Studies, Modern Finnish, Ap-plied Linguistics, Scandinavian Languages, Swedish

Language, German Language and Literature and Com-munication Studies.

Students of the Doctoral Programme in Languages and Communication complete a Doctor of Philosophy, degree.

The Doctoral Programme in Technical Sciences edu-cates high-calibre experts capable of independent re-search work to serve industries, business, the world of academia and other organisations.

The programme is multidisciplinary, covering every part of technology development from new technical innova-tions and solutions to product development.

Postgraduate degrees can be completed in the fol-lowing research fi elds (major subjects): automation technology, energy engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, telecommunication engineering, in-dustrial management, statistics and mathematical sci-ences.

The doctoral programme produces Doctors of Science in Technology, Doctors of Science in Business and Administration and Doctors of Philosophy.

The Graduate School of the University of Vaasa admits only the most motivated, talented, research-oriented students to its doctoral programmes. There are two application periods for doctoral studies at the university annually. The application deadlines are 30 April and 15 November each year.
