1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

I was not present during the lecture for the Graduate so I am basing the journal off the slides and actual film. The Graduate won many awards and Dustin Hoffman’s career really flourished after this film. It was one of the first movies about youth rebellion, and it also dealt with life after graduation which is why it became such a popular film. The way it was filmed as a Modern Expressionist gave a new perspective on film making with dialogues, sounds, camera angles and shots that were unique. 2) Find a related article and summarize the content. The article is a review on The Graduate by Roger Ebert. The article mentions how it funny because of the point of view. “It is funny, not because of sight gags and punch lines and other tired rubbish, but because it has a point of view.” (Ebert) He describes the plot on how Dustin Hoffman’s character is seen as someone with much potential and will be successful but he ends up taking a different path as a rebellious youth. He rates it at a 4 out of 4 stars. 3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The way that this film was presented was different, and I wasn’t used to but that only made me more interested in it. I found it interesting how the article by Ebert said it was supposed to be comical when the entire time I was seeing it as troubled youth going about life. I liked the whole idea that even though he goes through so much trouble he is able to stay with the girl he wanted but the scene specifically where they are on the bus with dull looks on their faces at the very end threw me off. Overall the article gave me a different perspective on the film. 4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of 4 things: the screening, class 3 discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

The film, although it is older than me, I felt I could almost relate to Hoffman’s character in the film. He goes through a stage in his youth a lot of viewers can relate to in one way or another. The film uses its different angles, shots and sounds to advantage which is why it won so many awards. Like the article mentioned, Roger Ebert saw it as a funny film, not because it

has actual jokes, but because of its point of view; living life through Ben’s life. What was good is that Ben ended up with the girl. The film was very enjoyable, and I liked it.

CHECKLIST FOR PLAGIARISM

1) ( X ) I have not handed in this assignment for any other class.

2) ( X ) If I reused any information from other papers I have written for other classes, I clearly explain that in the paper.

3) ( X ) If I used any passages word for word, I put quotations around those words, or used indentation and citation within the text.

4) ( X ) I have not padded the bibliography. I have used all sources cited in the bibliography in the text of the paper.

5) ( X ) I have cited in the bibliography only the pages I personally read.

6) ( X ) I have used direct quotations only in cases where it could not be stated in another way. I cited the source within the paper and in the bibliography.

7) ( X ) I did not so over-use direct quotations that the paper lacks interpretation or originality.

8) ( X ) I checked yes on steps 1-7 and therefore have been fully transparent about the research and ideas used in my paper.
