GUIDELINES FOR GRACE ACTIVITIES IN INCLEMENT WEATHER In case of threatening weather, especially if National Weather Service has issued a warning:
1. The Congregation Council President will consult with Pastor Dan and available Executive Team to determine with them whether to hold a scheduled worship service;
2. Watch TV (channels WHO 13 & KCCI 8) and listen to local radio stations (KWMT & WOI radio) for information about cancellations.
3. Attend worship or other activity only if you can do so safely. 4. If school is cancelled due to bad weather, Confirmation and Youth Group are
also cancelled that evening.
“If a cluttered desk indicates a cluttered mind, what does an empty desk indicate?” - Sign above someone’s desk
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” – Jesus (Matthew 6:25) So, full disclosure, I have had a cluttered desk almost my entire life, certainly throughout my en-tire ministry. Also, I will often find ways to procrastinate writing this newsletter article. Well… for this article those two things combined. My office was a disaster so I decided to clean it as a way to procrastinate. But as I was organizing and cleaning an idea came to me: Lent is about gaining a more singular focus on Jesus. It’s the basis for “giving things up for Lent.” It is a time of letting go of the things that distract us from following Jesus. So in essence, it’s a time of decluttering.
In other words, the first quote above, while comforting to those of us who tend to be pilers rather than filers, perhaps misses the point of uncluttering our life. People with empty desks don’t have empty minds, they have more uncluttered minds. So my challenge to us during this season of Lent is to unclutter your life so we can focus more on following Jesus.
To be clear, following Jesus needs to be the emphasis here. It would be easy for some to take the act of decluttering and just make it into more clutter. Just like it’s easy to take “giving things up for Lent” into just another health regimen. If we’re just giving things up and not focusing on pray-er and devotions we’re missing the point. If we’re simplifying in order to de-stress, that’s well and good, but there needs to be a renewed, or perhaps a new focus on the one we call our Lord and Savior.
If you’re new at focusing on Jesus we’d love to help. We have “Christ in our Home” devotion books available. We have worship on Sundays and Wednesdays during Lent. If you’d like to come and pray we will set up a kneeler in front of the “Jesus blesses the children” stained glass window in the sanctuary (In the front on the right side). That space is open pretty much every weekday morning and some afternoons as well. There are thousands of possibilities for online devotions as well. Here’s a few:
https://www.luthersem.edu/godpause/lenten-devotional/
https://www.wartburgseminary.edu/download/daily-devotions/
https://episcopalchurch.org/ecumenical-lenten-reflections
https://www.lhm.org/lent/
These devotions are not something to be crammed into your already too-busy schedule. Please don’t try to do this only if you have time. This will need to be a priority. It will need to be put on your calendar. You’re going to have to give something up. May God bless your decluttering.
God loves you and so do I, Pastor Dan

ARiSE—Always Rejoicing in the Savior's Embrace Happy February! And again I am typing up this article as another snowstorm and wicked wind chills blow about outside but we are so blessed to be safe and warm inside on nights like to-night. We had a wonderful turn out and time at our mid-winter lock-in on January 24. Lots of fun prepping the meal for the annual meeting, playing games, eating pizza, play-ing sardines, playing minute-to-win-it games and painting a wall in the ARiSE room. I am hoping to get the other wall painted this coming Sunday after church and before BINGO!
We had a lot of fun prepping the Taco bar for the Annual Meeting. I usually tend to err on the side of too much but you folks LOVE your Mexican food. Notes have been taken and the shopping list adjusted so don't worry - there will be PLENTY for next year!
We are now about half way through "The Story". This month we spent a lot of time refreshing our brains on the stories of Samuel, Saul, David and Solomon. During our study of David we attempt-
ed to write or re-write some Psalms in our own words:
God is Good! Joan Meyer, Teen/youth coordinator

Annual rummage/bake sale, silent auction, & café!
This fundraiser supports our Companion Congregation in Matembwe, Tanzania, Africa with edu-cation scholarships for the youth in that congregation. The scholarship money helps pay for tui-tion, books and food so they can attend secondary school, which would not be possible without our help. New this year, we will also support Lutheran Disaster Response. LDR assists families af-flicted by flooding, tornadoes, wildfires, earth quakes, and hurricanes. Our faith calls upon us to help our neighbors in need. New ideas are welcome to help with this fundraiser so that we can continue with our commitment to our Companion Congregation. Plan to join in on the fun and fel-lowship of this event. I look forward to the continued success of this project.
More information will be forthcoming. Jim Blocker
