The Church is Never Closed This was beautifully expressed by the Bishop-elect of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Missouri, Deon K. Johnson:

“The work of the church is essential.

The work of caring for the lonely, the

marginalized, and the oppressed is

essential.

The work of speaking truth to power and seeking justice is

essential.

The work of being a loving, liberating, and life giving

presence in the world is essential.

The work of welcoming the stranger, the refugee and the

undocumented is essential.

The work of reconciliation and healing and caring is

essential.

The church does not need to “open” because the church

never “closed”. We who make up the Body of Christ, the

church, love God and our neighbors and ourselves so much

that we will stay away from our buildings until it is safe.

We are the church."

New Office and Building Protocols We are glad to report that persons are generally observing recommended safety measures when they visit the church office. It is not only wise, but necessary, especially when considering some of the previous conditions and general health issues of staff and volunteers which would compromise their body's response if they became infected with COVID-19. So, please do not be offended if we remind you of certain reasonable protocols, but rather as an invitation to prove sympathetic and helpful.

• It would be helpful if you contact the office before visiting. Much might be accomplished over the phone, shorten the duration of your visit and, if the virus is present, minimize the exposure.

• If you haven't had the opportunity, please, first visit our restrooms where you can wash your hands and face.

• If you spy a bottle of hand sanitizer, please take that as an invitation to use it.

• Please wear a mask. • Avoid shaking hands or hugging. • Cover coughs and sneezes. • Attempt to maintain the six-foot

social distancing recommendation made by all medical authorities. That would mean, for instance, not entering the ministry assistant office unless invited.

• Naturally, staff will be required to clean surfaces frequently and at the close of business day, including chairs, desks, tables, counters, door handles, phones, computer keys, rest rooms and more. So, help where you can.

When we elect to reconvene, whether on a trial basis, or for limited or full gatherings, please attempt to keep these protocols in mind and continue to support them. Prevention will still be the most important measure we can take.

We are, after all, instructed by the Apostle Paul to seek the advantage of others (I Corinthians 10: 24).

Dear Ones, Graduations are upon us – if a bit different this year – but it has me thinking what this is about.

If you will be kind enough to accept an opinion, I think something essential has been lost in the sense that an education is not only 1) an attainment, but also 2) skills learned, in order to 3) keep learning. Years ago, the journalist Jim Lehrer spoke at the graduation at Southern Methodist University and here are a few paragraphs.

I urge you to please keep in mind what the diploma

you are about to receive does not mean. It does not

mean you are well educated. Quite the contrary. It

means, I hope, that you have been opened up to a

perpetual state of ignorance and thus a lifelong

hunger for…more ideas, more good words, more

knowledge, more good thoughts, more challenges,

more of everything. I must tell you that some of the

dumbest people I know went to great, prestigious

colleges and universities like Southern Methodist

University. They walked across a stage like this, took

their diplomas in their hot little hands, pronounced

themselves well-educated, then walked off…and

proceeded to never read another book, entertain

another fresh idea, or tax their minds in any way

beyond the minimum limits required to make a living

or make it socially, or both. (Chronicle of Higher Education, May 31, 1989.)

I kept Lehrer’s remarks because it’s not a bad thing for those of us who are further along to assess how it’s going.

In point of fact, the purpose of the church is, according to Jesus, first, making disciples, and, only then going into the world with a gospel. Yet, I can’t imagine he meant one course and then out you go, boot camp and then immediately world peace, one swing and then the batting title, one sermon and a call to deliver the Lyman Beecher lectures, a certificate from the primary department of the Sunday School and then this world becomes the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.

With a smile on my face, it occurs to me that we are preparing believers for a lifetime career in sainthood. I know, I know, it is been a long time since you were tempted to think of yourself as a saint, but forget the Catholic version. Sainthood understood the Lehrer way simply means to learn continuously to do what Jesus did.

The One Who called you means to prepare you for every situation for every season in your life for the sake of God’s purposes. Don’t skip Christ’s vocational education classes. Did you ever stop to think that the reason the church of Jesus Christ is struggling these days is not because of the world, but that we are ill-equipped to be saints?

There is much yet to learn.

I remember someone summing up graduate school for me as “simply preparation to join the conversation of a circle of those who really are in the know.” Don’t consider yourself graduated. Consider yourself as being prepared to join an on-going conversation with “those in the know” in the school of Christ.

The best is yet to be.

You know what to do. Abide in Christ and his company of fellow learners.

KBC Food Pantry The KBC Food Pantry continued with the drive-thru process of distributing food to food insecure families in May. The process works well and allows for social distancing. Face masks, hand sanitizer and gloves are all available to the volunteers.

We distributed food to 55 households which included 123 individuals. In addition, we are now receiving 55 “senior boxes” for those seniors over 60 years of age and meeting income guidelines. These boxes include an additional 35 pounds of food (low sodium canned vegetables, fruits, shelf-stable milk, tuna fish, peanut butter, oatmeal, juices. cheese). In total, we distributed 8,000 pounds of food in May!!!

The pantry also distributed 120 bags of food for the Backpack Buddies Program and activity packs donated from the Lancaster Community Library.

In June, the pantry expects to receive food through a new USDA program, Corona Food Assistance Program (CFAP). This program helps keep farmers across the nation from losing good produce during the epidemic. The USDA, with assistance from various companies, has put together 23-pound boxes of a good variety of produce such as potatoes, apples, carrots, yams, lettuce, oranges and onions. Also, the pantry expects to start seeing more dairy products through this program.

The food pantry is so blessed by the wonderful volunteers who support this mission every month. We also want to thank all of you who provide monetary or food donations,

Building and Grounds Maintenance While we’ve been away from the church building, Steve Tevault, Rick Ferrell and Jim Johnson have again been working hard on building improvements, including cleaning and reflooring the storage closet in Beane Hall, and installing new ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliant toilets in the educational wing off the Fellowship Hall. This means toilets are taller by several inches, helping those for whom getting up and down is difficult.
