BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURETHEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS]

NAME: Eunice Chan Yu Ming ID: 0315729LECTURER: Mr Nazmi TUTORIAL TIME: 4pm-6pmSYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: The Geometry of Feeling

AUTHOR: Juhani PallasmaaBased on the “The Geometry of Feeling” by Juhani Pallasmaa, the author

once stated that “as architect we do not primarily design buildings as physical

objects, but the images and feelings of people who live in them.” People often just

pass by the architecture everyday as merely to be looked as if it was built only to

be serve as a visual pleasing equipment, it is true that we often captivated by eye

catching architecture as it was the one that appeal to our eyes, however, the way

we perceive architecture should not be a mere of forms, a building with the

elements of portraying the feelings of the people who live in them is essential.

Therefore, we need to appreciate and have a pleasant journey or experience

inside space.

Furthermore, I could not agree more with one of the sentence in the book:

“the artistic dimension of a work of art does not lie in the actual physical thing; it

exists only in the consciousness of the people experiencing it.” The meaning of the

building itself does not lies in its forms, but in the character portrayed by the forms

and the emotional forces that they conveyed. For instance, character which

stimulates our senses can be easily achieved by spatial elements, either an open,

large, curbed, confined, bright or dark, nevertheless, through the elements that

were given, imagination and memory can be created from what we experienced in

the building. It may not be necessary a good experience, but the important part is

what reflects in our mind.

In a nutshell, architecture should not only just about form, it is about many

other things that creates world and influences the feeling of both mentally and

spiritually as form is just a case to its memory it only affects our feeling through

what it characterized.
