The Gentrifying Side of "Coliseum City" Part One
A new stadium - That's cool. The rest of the plan - not so much.
Oaklanders declared a long time ago that we did not want to become
a bedroom community for San Francisco. Two completely
unnecessary aspects of the new plan move us in that direction 1. The
proposal going to the City Council will change the General Plan so
that residential development is permitted in the only dedicated
business park in Oakland. There are 8000 people, including lots of
Oaklanders, working there now in 100 businesses. Allowing
residential development in a business area causes property prices to
rise, which pushes out the businesses. That is not a guess; it's a
certainly 2. The plan includes 6000 "market rate" housing units
available only to those who can pay $3000 a month which means that
we will be building housing for people who don't live in Oakland.
Trickle down housing doesn't work any better than trifle down
economics.
My message to City Council members: 1) Keep the teams and build a
stadium. 2) AND Protect 8000 jobs and 100 businesses by NOT
changing the General Plan for the Business Park area. 3) AND build
housing affordable for people who live in Oakland
