GARRETT — Garrett High School hosted a pep session to kick off College Go Week Monday morning.

Guest speaker, Trine University Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, Matt Land, talked to students about the importance of college and how to get involved on the campus.

Coach Land offered advice to all grades relating to fi nding out who you are, what you want to be, and how attending the right college can help make those dreams come true. He stated how important it is to fi nd a college that suits you and to start your search early.

Coach Land’s last piece of advice was “Listen to advice, take it to heart, and use it!”

Indiana Army National Guard sergeant Isaac Aby, who spoke to the students about College Go Week, presented another post high school opportunity. Aby’s goal was to inform students that while attending college, you could serve in the military, and earn money to help fund your education. The National Guard pays 100 percent tuition and supplies health and life insurance, which is a great benefi t for college students.

Both Land and Aby were very involved with the student body. The pep session closed with a push-up competition between classmates while Trine University cheerleaders passed out National Guard T-shirts and lanyards.

Garrett High School also encourages staff to dress in their favorite college apparel throughout the week and students to participate in theme days such as Dress for Success and Dress as a College Fan days. The guidance offi ce and business depart-ment work together to provide opportunities for students to consider their post-high school plans and have fun doing it. The week will conclude with raffl e drawings for prizes from various colleges across the country as part of a business department student project.

College Go Week is a statewide program

that promotes applying to college early in a student’s senior year. High school seniors have the opportunity to apply to several Indiana colleges without paying the application fee. For more information, visit CollegeGoWeekIndiana.org.

By Aaron [email protected] — A

heavy-truck-repair operation on land not zoned for that activity has drawn the ire of neighbors and prompted county offi cials to take action.

Three residents approached the DeKalb County commissioners Monday to discuss land on C.R. 59 where a resident is operating a semi repair business on land zoned A-2 agricultural. The residents — Kelley and Keith Likes and Doyle L. Marr — said semi tractors travel the county road at all hours and apply jake brakes as they pull into the business.

The issue arose when the land owner, J.D. Yoder, applied for and was granted a permit to build a pole barn on the land. With the barn came numerous semis and an apparent business, the residents and county offi cials said.

The county plan commission earlier this year fi led the operation as a “truck freight terminal, ” said planning director Clint Knauer. After informing Yoder he could not operate such a business in the zone, the commission then fi led a notice of violation against

him in May. More recently, the county fi ned Yoder $7,500, Knauer said.

Knauer said the county has taken all the steps it can to handle the issue short of court action.

“It’s a process,” said Knauer, acknowledging the neighbors’ frustration. “I don’t have machinery, I don’t have the right to

trespass. I can’t just go take his stuff without due process.”

Kelley Likes asked the county commissioners to fi le an injunction — a step they cannot take by law — and said the county plan commission is hesitating to put a stop to the activity because it is hoping the operator will “go broke and

leave in the middle of the night.”

Likes she said has gathered complaint forms from 28 neighbors and sought legal counsel.

Marr told the commis-sioners, “It’s a residential area, and it’s being used as an industrial area. You just have to be there to see it.”

The commissioners set a meeting with Knauer during their regular meeting Sept. 30 to discuss the issue.

In other business Monday, the commissioners granted permission for Central Communications director Paul Brewer to hire a part-time dispatcher to replace one who had been terminated.

At 11 a.m., the commissioners attended a ribbon-cutting and dedica-tion ceremony that offi cially reopened C.R. 11-A west of Interstate 69.

The commissioners joined with former commis-sioners Don Kaufman and Chuck Ort, as well as Garrett Mayor Tonya Hoeffel and representatives from contractors A & Z Engineering and E & B Paving, to formally reopen the roadway, which was reconfi gured for better traffi c fl ow.

The road has been opened to traffi c since Aug. 23 following a $2.46 million rehabilitation project.

Hoeffel said, “With the expansion of C.R. 11-A and the expansion of S.R. 8, it makes Garrett more accessible for growth, for visitors, business and industry, so we see it as a positive expansion.”

each worked for larger pet grooming businesses but wanted to have their own shop.

In 2007, Seely’s enclosed front porch on West Quincy Street was renovated to house a pet grooming salon for the pair, but the space was cramped with two groomers, tables and other equipment.

“We were having growing pains,” Weldon said, especially when Seely was pregnant with her daughter, Aydin, now 4. “We really had to use the space wisely.”

Seely and her husband, Chris, purchased the current property a few blocks down the street at 1601 W. Quincy where a reception area, grooming areas, bathing space and offi ces have been added.

“It took a lot of work,” Seely said of cleaning up the building. “We defi nitely have a lot more space.”

And pet hair doesn’t work its way into their home anymore, she added.

M & M Pet Grooming offers dog and cat grooming at reasonable prices, including nail trimming,

They hope to add kenneling service later, and eventually hire a couple more groomers, possibly second shift options, Seely said.

ICE student Cassidy Weichart, a senior at Garrett

High School, also works at the shop.

Lots of parking is now available for customers, making it much safer than the on-street parking at the former site.

“We offer a clean, warm, welcoming environment for your furry family members,” Seely said.

Whan produced an inspection report picturing the state of deterioration both inside and outside the home.

The consensus of residents Monday was to proceed to have the home torn down. Grams has 10 days to appeal the decision.

“At least we’re getting the ball rolling,” Whan said of the process. “We’re taking it step-by-step,” noting other properties in

the Altona also violate the town’s unsafe building ordinance.

The town board will meet in regular session on Monday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. at Altona Town Hall. A special meeting may be set on the measure later in the month, Whan added.

COACHES, PROGRAMS TEAM UP

Brother Bud Owen, left, and John Bodey announced two boys basket-ball programs will team up this fall.

Sue Carpenter

By Sue [email protected]

GARREETT — Two boys basketball leagues are teaming up in Garrett this fall for grades 3-6.

Garrett High School head basketball coach John Bodey and Brother Bud Owen from the First Church of Christ announced the God’s MVP and the Garrett Youth League will offer this program for all boys in grades 3-6 as the only youth basketball program in town.

The purpose of the program is to teach basket-ball in a way that each boy feels as though he is God’s Most Valuable Player on the court.

The goal is to instill confi dence and encourage-ment in a Christian environ-ment through prayer and coaches who are positive role models for the youth.

“This is a great opportu-

nity to expand a program that is already in place,” said Owen.

The season begins Nov. 2 with eight games to be played Saturday mornings in the middle school gym, plus one practice night per week. The program continues through Dec. 21.

Bodey is excited to have a scoreboard and referees for the program that were not offered in the past.

“This will be more of a league,” he said, with teams competing on Saturdays rather than just running drills.

Bodey added the number of volunteer coaches is also a blessing for the program.

Teams will be recognized during halftime of JV basket-ball games, as well.

Those interested in coaching must attend a coaches clinic on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. in the middle school gym to be part

of the program. Enter door 20. Potential coaches will hear expectations, behavior, drills and offensive and defensive drills during the session.

The $30 registration fee includes T-shirt, jersey and shorts. Evaluation and uniform sizing will be from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 in the middle school gym.

Those unable to attend on try-out day can sign up on the fi rst day of the program.

Information is being handed out at Garrett and St. Joseph schools this week, and will be available at the school offi ces.

For more information contact Bodey at [email protected] or 357-3853, or Owen at 357-3625.

God’s MVP programs for boys in kindergarten-grade two and girls basketball and cheerleading will begin Jan. 11.

Garrett knocks off Whitko

The Railroaders got goals from Kaitlin Wisel and Katie Hunkler. Senior night for the team is set for tonight at 5 p.m. vs. Blackhawk Christian.

Prairie HeightsGARRETT — The

Railroaders defeated Prairie Heights 4-1 Monday on the Garrett pitch.

Garrett scored early in the game when they strung together several passes in a row and went across the fi eld and straight into goal. Karsten Cooper scored on a double assist from Tristan Bigelow and Blake Western.

The game got sluggish after that, leaving both teams trying to fi gure out where to produce offense. With little happening, the game went to half-time with Garrett leading 1-0.

Action picked up for both teams about half-way through the second half as Garrett went up 2-0 with 22 minutes left to play on Dayton Sweet’s fi rst goal of the game on Karsten Cooper’s assist. As soon as Garrett seemed to have the game in hand, the Panthers scored just one minute later.

After both teams exchanged scoring chances, Prairie Heights had a shot that bounced off the crossbar. Garrett took the rebound and caught the Panthers in transition and Sweet scored his second goal off a long pass from Gavin Dallas.
