Inusingourweddingmoneyforgymequipment,therewereonlytworealisticpotentialoutcomes.

Outcome#1:Ispendthemoney,Iusetheequipmentreligiously,andeveryoneishappy,becauseinthelongrunIamsavingusmoney.

Outcome#2:Ibuytheequipment,theexcitementfades,Istopworkingoutinthegarage.MywifethinksI’manidiot,andIwouldbeanidiottospendwhatlittlemoneywehadandwasteit.

Rightfromthestart,my“why”wastoshowmywifethatIamthetypeofmanthatstickstohisword,whospendsourmoneywisely,anddoesn’tquitanything.

Ididnothavetheforethoughtatthattimetohavea“bigwhy,”butIluckilystumbledintohavingagigantic“why”whenIstartedmygaragegym.

Maybethatsoundscrazy,butmywhywastoshowmywifethetypeofmanIam.Thebestpartisthat“why”turnedintoahabit.

–Extremeheat—Igotafan.

–Freezingcold—Iputonsweats.

–Nospace—Iwentoutside.

–Notenoughequipment—Imadeitwork.

The“why”tomewassobig,therewasnoquitting.Therewasno,“Idon’tfeellikeit,”andthathasmadethiswholeGarageGymAthletethingreallystick.

WhenIreallykickedthingsupinthegaragegym,IwasgoingthroughpilottrainingintheUnitedStatesAirForce,whichhasoneofthemostdemandingtimetablesintheU.S.military,andthingsneversloweddown.Overtheyears,Iworkedcrazyhours,mywifeandIhaveaddedtwochildrenintothemix,andtobehonest,attimes,Idon’tknowhowIfititallin.

I’llsayitagain,asafamilymanwithrealtimeconstraintsithasbeenchallengingovertheyears.Mymotivationhasgoneonrollercoasterrides,myprogramminghasjumpedallovertheplace,andIhaveseenmyprogressnotonlystall,butmovebackwards.

MostofmygaragegymwasDIY,andsoweremyprograms.Imayhavebeenhoninginmyskillsasacarpenter,butthebiggestskillIwasrefiningeachdaywasbecomingaprogrammer.Whenyouheartheterm“programmer”inthisbook,itsimplymeansstructuring,writing,andplanningworkoutprogramsandschedules.

Pre-garagegym,Iwasalreadywritingprogramsandworkouts.However,withagaragegymandminimalequipmentIhadtobecomeevenbetterat

Itwasn’tstupiddebt.Wehadtwocars,thuswehadcarloans.Wehadjustfinishedschoolandhadstudentloans,andonelittlecrazyincidentwithourdogandwenowhadmedicaldebt—yes,fromadog.

Andthegrandtotalwas$100,000.

Now,backtogaragegyms.Aslongasyouknowstartingandstickingwillbethebiggestthingsyoucandoinagaragegymthenwecanmovetothesmallermistakes,whichcanstillderailyourprogress.

Mistake#1:Toomuchemphasisonthe“right”equipment.

Ifyouthinkalackofequipmentisholdingyouback,you’rewrong!Istartedwithabarbell,someplates,andIbuiltasetofDIYringsandaplyometricbox.Ionlyusedthoseitemsforalongtimeandsawgreatresults.

ThinkingyouneedtostartwithaGHD(GluteHamDeveloper)machine,ReverseHyperextensionmachine,andConcept2roweristhewrongtrainofthought.Ifyou’vegotthemoney,goforit!ButIdidn’tsoIbuilteverything.
