The Alchemy of Science and Technology at EmTech Hong Kong 2017The second edition of EmTech Hong Kong, co-organised by MIT Technology Review and Koelnmesse Pte Ltd, concluded on a high note after two days of thought-provoking discussions on the latest breakthroughs in science and technology. Held from 6 to 7 June at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, EmTech Hong Kong was attended by 341 C-level executives from 13 countries. This year’s line-up of speakers included some of the brightest minds in the areas of Personalised Medicine, New Materials, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Virtual Reality, FinTech, Cybersecurity and Future Cities.
Hosted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and supported by The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong, EmTech Hong Kong 2017 featured an inspiring two-day conference programme which provided participants with a glimpse into the future technologies that will change our lives.
This year, EmTech Hong Kong took a deep dive into Artificial Intelligence. Going beyond the hype, EmTech Hong Kong brought together some of the foremost experts in this area: Gary Marcus, Founding CEO of Geometric Intelligence (recently acquired by Uber) and renowned AI contrarian opened the AI session with sobering statements about the state of AI. He was joined by HKUST’s Qiang Yang (Technical Advisor to WeChat) and Noriko Arai from Japan’s National Institute of Informatics who are both working on cutting edge Natural Language Processing tools.
Looking at the application of AI in healthcare, two of the world’s leading scientists working at the intersection of AI and genomics, iCarbonX’s Yingrui Li and WuXi NextCODE’s Tom Chittenden, inspired the EmTech audience with introductions to AI-based health monitoring systems capable of predicting, and preventing, disease. Machines’ creativity and emotional intelligence also came under the spotlight with inspiring presentations by Soul Machines’ Phil Chen, and Google Brain’s David Ha.

TESTIMONIALS
We asked participants what they thought about EmTech Hong Kong. Here’s what they had to say:
EmTech Hong Kong was a fascinating collection of speakers making genuinely groundbreaking progress on real solutions to mankind’s problems. Too many confabs now are feel-good cheerleading. EmTech genuinely stretched my thinking about how real scientific and technological breakthroughs will change our lives in the near future from the people doing the research.
Andrew Work, Head Content Strategist for Asia Pacific, NexChange
EmTech is a very unique emerging technologies conference hosted by MIT Technology Review. As a curation of the world’s leading scientists, technology executives and investors, EmTech has grown into a global community in the United States, Europe, South America, India, Singapore, and now in Hong Kong.
Alexandar Wai, Vice President (Research Development) and Chair Professor of Optical Communications, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
EmTech HK is an excellent event to get to know the latest technologies that will be impacting our future. The topics are relevant and the speakers are all top notch. It was an honour to have been involved in 2017.
Alvin Wang Graylin, China President of Vive, HTC
The EmTech event brings together researchers, practitioners and users of high technology and Artificial Intelligence. It truly was a “bridge” to facilitate the exchange of ideas, an essential ingredient for high technologies to grow.
Qiang Yang, New Bright Professor of Engineering, HKUST
I really enjoyed the conference. The talks covered an interesting range of cutting-edge subjects and the speakers made meaningful points. I learned a lot in a short period of time (which is not always true of other conferences). The networking was very good as well. I plan to attend again next year.
Alfonso Ballesteros, Secretary General, The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong
The EmTech Hong Kong conference was superb. A splendid range of contemporary topics delivered by an amazing set of presenters. The curation was first rate. I learned so much outside my field of expertise.
Donald R. Sadoway, John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry, MIT
Emtech HK presents a unique opportunity to hear about the emerging technologies that will shape our future lifestyles and meet people who are actually making them happen.
Weng-Li Yoon, Research Director, Athenex
EmTech Hong Kong really is one of the few events in Hong Kong and for that matter in Asia that brings together deep industry and scientific insight in emerging tech and its commercialisation with a focus on Asia but a global outlook. Imagine TED on MIT steroids.
Vincent Ng, Founder, 1+1=11 Productions
Fascinating, inspirational and one step ahead of other traditional technology conference.
Alain V. Fontaine, Partner, Ocean Equity Partners
An event to learn, get inspired and be challenged to think. I’ll be attending the next EmTech conference!
Bert Kastel, Principal, Tech 844
There are very few sources I trust for staying in the flow and in the know with respect to emerging tech. MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Hong Kong is one of these sources -- top notch speakers and content across the most promising tech innovations as well as great networking with like-minded expert attendees so can dive deeper into the topics. All of this while taking in bright, stunning views of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
Blums Pineda, Partner, Prophet
During the EmTech Hong Kong conference we had the opportunity to meet such incredible individuals where a ten-minute conversation carried on to over an hour. We listened to amazing talks about the next generation of grid level batteries, new kinds of sensors, cryptocurrencies, AI, and cancer development, that has left a positive impact and opened my eyes to new fields of study. Once again, thank you for providing such an insightful opportunity to learn more about the next generation of emerging technology and connecting with some very intelligent individuals.
