Dear Members, June is a time of change. Most notably, June is when we all thank our out-going Board Members and Activity Leaders for the generosity they have shown through their dedication of time and energy to making our club the outstanding organization it is. Three cheers for the Board and the Activity leaders! It is also the time we welcome our new Board Members and Activity Leaders.

While you are enjoying friends and family over the summer, our new Board and Activity Leaders will be busy planning a calendar full of fun events for the year ahead. I hope everyone who attended the Spring Luncheon had a good time. Arlene "Lazy Rivers" Butler was the surprise entertainment. Arlene had us all laughing and applauding throughout her debut, stand-up comedy routine! A big, big thank you to Arlene! You were the cherry on top of the sundae! Please renew your membership at your earliest convenience. Send in your check today! Have a wonderful summer. I'll look forward to catching up with you at the September General Meeting!

HISTORIAN Over the years the club had accumulated quite a collection of scrapbooks put together each year by the Historian. Although we no longer wished to store all of the scrapbooks, we didn’t want to toss them either. The problem was solved when Dottie Batie approached the Reston Museum, operated by the Reston Historic Trust, and they agreed to take our collection. Thanks Dottie!

.NEWSLETTER Pearl DiPasquale 703-476-5464 Newsletter deadline is August 16. Please send all articles to [email protected]. Thank you to all who contributed with pictures and the monthly profile. It is a huge success. We plan to continue with it next year, so if you are interested please let me know.

PAST EVENTS UPDATE “All the news that fits, we print…..”

It was a "HAPPENING" performed by "MARGARET AND HER COMMITTEE" -- they soared to #1 their first time out. "OH, WHAT A NIGHT" there was dancing and eating and dancing and drinking and more dancing - music provided by "BRUCE AND HIS ECLECTIC SOUND". Dick Clark would have been

proud of all the dancers. (behind the scenes Margaret Nichols, Janet Findley, JoAnn Esposito, Claudia Cruz and Julianne O'Dwyer-- music Bruce Anderson)

PROFILE OF THE MONTH Arlene Butler

This is kind of like writing my obituary…who am I and what might you find interesting about me. So hang on…here we go. I was born in Wilmington DE and grew up in Chester and Media PA. I was voted most talkative in high school. Off to Northeastern University in Boston for undergrad in Human Services while working in physical therapy departments in hospitals and at the Veterans Administration mental health programs during the cooperative education program. Attended Boston College for Masters in Social Work and did a field study in Cuba on comparative social policy analysis and edited a text book for a professor. Worked for many years with people who had long term mental illness and who were being deinstitutionalized into the community in Boston. Then I had a second career working with people with HIV/AIDS in treatment, education, and prevention programs during the early days of the pandemic in Baltimore. Was single, then married and divorced a college professor during these days. The last 19 years, I have happily lived with Mark, who works in the golf business. No children yet got two bonus children when I got together with Mark. His daughter is in graduate school for speech pathology and his son lives in Australia and is a barista. After attending a terrible funeral, I went to The New Seminary in NYC to become an ordained interfaith minister so I could be a rent-a-clergy for people who died with no faith community. I was a chaplain at a retirement community for seven years, preached every Sunday, and did over 200 funerals in Chicago. That was career #3. I also had my own business as a life consultant, psychotherapist, seminar leader, and organizational consultant for many years as my 4

th career, also in Chicago. I self-published a book of essays called “Recipes for

Prosperity – Food for Thought”. We moved to the Eastern Shore of VA for Mark’s job and I worked as a social worker for a hospice as my 5

th career. There I designed and coordinated an installation of 1000 origami cranes

as a fundraiser for the Red Cross Tsunami Relief and was active as an actress in community theater, all the while riding my pink scooter around town while in costume. In August 2011, we moved to Reston for another new job for Mark, and I have been on self-declared sabbatical. I joined the Club in November of 2011 and wrote a novel in 30 days called “Talking Turkey with Four Old Birds”. During my time off, I was the beverage cart girl at Reston National Golf Course when I wasn’t travelling. In December I just completed my self-designed, mostly solo, seven-week trip circumnavigating the globe and going to 13 countries where I stayed mostly in the homes of strangers (couch surfing) and gave away money to projects I visited. The high point was giving away 1000 origami cranes that I folded around the world and getting a photo of each person. I hope to be able to share this project through speaking engagements and a photo exhibition. I have a goal to go to 100 countries and now have 53 under my belt. For 2013, I am reopening my business as a life consultant working with people from womb to tomb, birth to earth, sperm to worm and erection to resurrection. I help people figure out how to have the life they want from the life they have with clarity, focus, ease, and grace. I am publishing my book called “Tap, Dab, Jiggle - A Woman’s Guide to Teaching Boys Men’s Room Etiquette” and am going to write a play called “Do As I Say” and several books called “There Are Three Holes”, “Aren’t You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana”, “Do Put It In Your Mouth” and “Get Off Your Rump Roast and Get Moo-ving”. A stand-up comedy routine is also on the deck for 2013! In

between all of that, I hope to make it to the coffees, the book remarks, and the general meetings, and get to befriend more of

the great women of the Club! I think 2013 is bound to be keen for Queen Arlene!

This is a picture of me with the Thai Origami Club in Bangkok, Thailand after folding origami cranes at a huge event at Thai PBS during my recently completed trip around the world during my sabbatical!
