The Frater is a result and a culmination of the Brotherhood and teamwork all of us experienced as undergraduates. The Educational Foundation gets to showcase the amazing ways our Brothers are making a difference and how others can help. The purpose of this issue is to update you on the vision and goals of our Fraternity and the Foundation. In subsequent issues, stories will be shared of Brothers who have made an impact as well as Brothers who have been helped and lives improved with your gifts and contributions. It had the help of many others who live the values of our Brotherhood through their words and actions. The intent is to publish the Frater three times annually. In addition, please check the pilambdaphi.org website or the Pi Lambda Phi Facebook page for regular updates. Please share your experiences and thoughts, as we want to share your experiences with our entire Brotherhood.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. Please mail your correspondence to the

In 2013, the Fraternity saw continued progress towards the strategic initiatives we set out in 2010 to Ensure the Longevity of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity. I am excited to report that through the engagement and commitment of Brothers like you, we delivered an 18% annual increase in donations for fiscal year 2013 (ending July 2013). These funds supported a significant increase for our Elimination of Prejudice scholarship, fourteen (14) Foundation undergraduate scholarships, and Chapter managed scholarships as well as support for Convention delegates. As IEC President Jeff Buhler shares in this issue, we are seeing great results in our Chapters with high quality men graduating and joining our alumni ranks. The Foundation programs directly support those efforts. As you read the stories in this issue about the men benefitting from the Foundation, you’ll see how your donations continue to affect our Fraternity’s success.

2013 saw changes at the Foundation with new men joining our Board of Trustees and others leaving after providing valuable volunteer service. We welcome new Trustee, Dan Scott ‘89 IL Tau Delta, along with our new 2013 Trustees; Gary Sanders ‘99, PA Sigma Upsilon who is focused on our current communication programs and Jeff Buhler ‘93, FL Delta as the current Foundation IEC Representative. We have also created the new position of Associate Trustee and welcome Boris Manakhimov ‘11, NY Phi Lambda as a key member of the Kovner Corp. volunteer recruiting team.

We increased our donations and the number of scholarships, but success depends on execution and the efforts of Brothers like you. I have consistently made two simple requests. First, reflect upon what Pi

Lambda Phi has meant to you as an undergraduate, as an alumni and what it will mean to you in the future. Second, ask yourself, “What can I do to Ensure the Longevity of Pi Lambda Phi?” We are experimenting this spring with additional scholarship opportunities by providing scholarship grants twice a year instead of the traditional annual grant. There have also been requests for graduate level scholarships which we may consider in the future. Our ability to expand these programs requires your support, whether through your annual contributions, establishing and funding specific scholarships or remembering Pi Lambda Phi in your estate planning. George Beck ‘43 VA Omega Alpha has endowed a $2,500 annual scholarship that we have consistently granted and Steve Morley-Mower ’78 VA Psi recently created a scholarship to honor Hal Gaba ’67 CA Tau, a Brother who had a significant impact on his life. Please contact me directly for information about how you can make a long term pledge, establish a scholarship or include Pi Lambda Phi in your estate planning and ensure your legacy is an integral part of our Fraternity’s legacy.

It is easy to give right now:

1) Register for site access so we can keep you informed of fraternal business; and,

2) Invest online in your fraternity through the Educational Foundation and Ensure the Longevity of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.

3) Invest via check: Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation 60 Newtown Rd., #118 Danbury, CT 06810

It only takes a few minutes to stay connected and help the Educational Foundation provide vital support to our undergraduate Chapters and your Brotherhood.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to our success in 2013!

After 118 years, I am proud to say: It’s a great time to be a Pi Lam! It’s a great time to eliminate prejudice!

Fraternally, Chip Luman

FROM the IEC PRESIDENTJust about every metric we have at the International level has been improving over the last several years. I am continually amazed at the caliber of young men our chapters are recruiting and their commitment to our fraternity and our Creed.I ask for your support of our Educational Foundation. Your gifts recognizes and rewards our top academic and Fraternal contributors. Your gifts help educate our members how to recruit, work in teams, and lead. There is no nobler Creed in the Fraternity movement and your support is needed to grow it.Peter Drucker was one of the great business minds of our lifetime. The Austrian-born management consultant, educator, and author would often ask two simple questions. These questions could help navigate through complex issues and help focus his students and audiences on their primary needs. Drucker’s “What business are you in?” and “How’s business?” inquiries still resonate with students, MBA professors and business leaders today. If Drucker were to ask you what business is our fraternity in? How would you respond? Many would start with our Creed – “That all men are created free and equal”. Some may refer to our Mission Statement that includes our pride “…to inherit ideals and responsibilities of brotherhood; live according to those beliefs; and accept the challenge of passing an even brighter torch onto those who follow…”. Others might provide thoughts about the Business of the Brotherhood, Not 4 Years but a Lifetime, Live the Creed, and the Elimination of Prejudice. Our Five Fold New Member Obligation which includes Always Being a Gentleman and Having the Courage to Follow Your Convictions and the meaning and purpose of our Initiation Ritual would certainly be shared by some. Many

would look to our current strategic plan of Ensuring the Longevity of Pi Lambda Phi through Healthy Chapters Today, Growing Chapters Tomorrow and Building the Foundation for our Future as their answer. Without a doubt, many of us feel strongly the lifelong friendships we have built through Pilam is at the core of our business.None of us could be wrong in our response to Drucker. With nearly 120 years of experiences and Kovner-like work, sweat, and love, one of the most unique realities we have in our fraternity is to recognize Pilam means different things to each of us yet we share a common fraternal bond. When Drucker got a response from his warm up question, he moved onto the simple question of “How’s business?”. So, how is business at Pilam? As President of our voluntary governing board, I can share that Pilam business is great! At the consolidated level, we are fortunate to have Ian Lowe as our Executive Director leading our International Headquarters Staff. Our number of graduating Brothers continues to increase each year. Although we measure growth in many ways, graduation is the most comprehensive metric as it includes both our recruitment and retention performance of our student members. Our Fraternity is financially stable with proper fiscal and governance oversight in place. In addition, our always improving educational programming, chapter officer training, and development initiatives continue to provide opportunities for individual and chapter growth. On the decentralized level, our Chapters continue to achieve success through a blend of International standards and expectations combined with their own traditions and unique attributes of their specific chapters. Our Chapter’s academic performance has

been on the rise for several year and most Chapters are engaged in impactful community activities and programming that support the Elimination of Prejudice Programs and many other local causes. It truly is a Great Time to be a Pilam!

Fraternally,Jeff Buhler, President IEC

Our donors made these scholarships possible. An increase in giving this year allowed the

Educational Foundation to grant scholarships to outstanding men in over a third of our Chapters. The recipients had GPA’s above 3.0 and had involvement in their Chapter, campus, and communities. Each has their personal story of overcoming challenges with determination. The Educational Foundation through your donations assists these young men to obtain their degrees. These are their stories of achievement. Through your help we can grow the scholarship program to help develop leadership dedicated to the ideals of Pi Lambda Phi.Aditya Rajagopal - University of FloridaAd is an avid Pilam intramural football player at the University of Florida and has the goal of graduating with honors next year. Pilam has helped Ad find his passion for volunteering while building his self confidence. The scholarship allows him to lower the amount of debt needed to finish his undergraduate studies, and also the scholarship gives greater financing options if he chooses to obtain his advanced degree in economics or economic policy.Ad, a native of India, wants to increase his fluency in Tamil which is the native language of his parents. He has a strong sense of helping to increase the

understanding of his culture with the United States in a hope to continue to grow relations with the one of the world’s highest growing economies.Anthony Cerna - University of California at BerkeleyAnthony is a first generation college student attending the University of California at Berkeley. Anthony’s resident assistant (RA) was a Pilam who introduced him to the Brothers at the CA

Tau Chapter. Academic excellence is a top priority along with a challenging workload in mathematics and statistics. Due to the reduced state funding, the Hal Gaba scholarship and general scholarship has helped Anthony finance his third year.

Anthony’s strong academic achievement and involvement has driven him to participate in a program to help low income students.Brad Korer - Radford UniversityBrad is currently the Vice President of Education,

and spent last summer at his home in Las Vegas, planning for this years entire New Member process. The older Brothers of Pi Lambda Phi at Radford University are close and encouraged his short-term goal of becoming Rex of this Chapter, but he also knows he is the only one that can determine that fate. One of the things Brad enjoys is the field of Entertainment and is trying to “make it” as a rap artist but if that is unachievable he has the drive and will to become a business owner. In fact, he say that without Pilam, he would never have the confidence to think he could be famous without the enormous amount of support from my Brotherhood.Graham Sligh - University of VirginiaGraham is a second-year student from Central Florida. He has not declared a major yet, but is looking at an interdisciplinary biology major. His future goals are to ultimately work for the foreign service or the state department, but is also thinking about serving as an army chaplain before pursuing government service.

CHARACTER: SCHOLARSHIPOn campus, Graham is involved with such as the student newspaper, the Queer Student Union, and a literary and debating society.Pi Lambda Phi is important to him because the friendships he has

with his Brothers are so important to him, and it provides a release from the rest of my schedule. No matter how busy he is, he knows that he can always go to his Brothers and talk about what he am going through or just sit around with them and enjoy their company. Jeremy Peavey - Roanoke CollegeA pre-med student at the Roanoke colony, the scholarship has allowed him to focus on studies and his goal of becoming a ophthalmologist. The increased time studies increase the chance of being admitted to medical school.

Jeremy is vice president of Catholic Campus Ministries, a Resident Advisor, on the intramural football team, a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, in addition to his contributions

as a brother of Pi Lambda Phi, to become an ophthalmologist, he is interning locally. Following graduation he will complete medical school, residency, and the US Navy.

Josh Sheehan - University of VirginiaJosh is a third year student on the premed track majoring in both Biology and Economics. He is an active member of the University of Virginia club cross country team as well as the Residential Advisor program, where he lives and is responsible for 20 first-year students. He is very big into fitness and spends a majority of his free time hiking, running, and playing various sports around campus grounds. He also volunteers to teach Sunday school for a group of 10 children ages 6-10 at the local Hillel every other week. In the short-run, his current focus is to really get the most out of his undergraduate experience and foster relationships that will last a lifetime at the same time as adequately preparing himself to go to Medical School. His ultimate long term goal is to succeed in Medical School and attain a job where he is satisfied and able to positively impact the lives of as many people as possible. Some would describe him as a social butterfly who is always full of energy and brings a positive attitude to everything he participates in. Josh thinks it is important enjoy being the friend that anyone can come to in any type of situation, whether a serious issue or just need someone to hang out and occupy their time with.

This is what attracted him to Pi Lambda Phi and has been such a good fit for him, because it is all about being a Brother. This term Brother really hits home with him and resonates how he tries to build all of his relationships. He believes a person is defined by the people that they hang out with and how those specific relationships influence their life. There is no better feeling in the world to have such a tight knit group of guys who are always there for you, and accept you and everyone alike without judgment.Kevin Ly - Pennsylvania State University

Kevin is a senior studying Kinesiology at Pennsy lvan ia State University, and thus has a huge interest in exercise and sports. He

tries to spend a lot of his free time trying to get outside to exercise and play sports with friends and Brothers of the Fraternity. His enthusiasm for these activities influences his Brothers to compete in the intramural fraternal sports based on his belief that competing in sports with his Brothers brings them all closer and allows them to have a great time of bonding and fun.Leonard Bernas - Florida Institute of TechnologyReceiving the scholarship allowed Lenny to stay active and engaged with the Chapter at Florida Institute of Technology. He has been involved with the Chapter, IFC, and Relay for Life. Pilam has allowed him to be himself and the Chapter

Page 7: The Frater - Pi Lambda Phi Home9D4C0D8C-8A79-488E-A3DE-0DA60F108… · FL Epsilon Lambda/ Florida State University ... in Tamil which is the native language of his parents. He has

opened their arms to this East Windsor transplant. Lenny plans to improve the FL Delta Upsilon Chapter while completing a five year master program in Biochemistry. FIT offers an accelerated program where he can receive a Bachelor and Master degrees in five years.Orrin Webb - Salisbury UniversityOrrin was part of the transformation of the MD Kappa Delta Chapter at Salisbury University. These men transformed a Chapter with every member contributing to high academic excellence, community service, and dedication to inclusiveness. The Fraternity provided an

epiphany of acceptance and a philosophy of sharing meaning with not just the Brotherhood but everyone.Orrin plans to a post-graduate career in the financial services

industry. Later he wants to pursue a political career in government service. Samuel Simpson - University of WisconsinSam is active in both the Student Senate and at the Pi Lambda Phi Chapter at the University of Wisconsin. The scholarship will provide the opportunity to devote to studies for a law degree.

Tom Vaccaro - Rensselar Polytechnic InstituteTom is a sophomore Biomedical Engineer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute concentrating in bio-imaging / bio-optics, and minoring in economics, applied physics, and biology. He has a near 4.0 GPA and the academic standing of a junior. He is a first year member of the Cancer Cell Biology Group, where he is researching cancer cell interaction on a molecular level. This study is looking at the interaction among infant brain tumor cells, leukemia cells, and normal fibroblasts.Tom is also a varsity decathlete on the RPI NCAA Div III Track and Field team, where he enjoys pushing himself to new physical limits and learning new techniques in athleticism.

Lastly (and to him possibly most importantly) Tom is currently the newly elected Archon for the NY Kappa Tau Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi. In his first semester as a live-in Brother, he has learned a lot

about the organization of the Chapter and social interactions between Brothers by his previous position of Commissary (in charge of the kitchen). Tom’s ultimate post-graduation goal is to be a professor at a high level institution while maintaining his own cell research program.

CHARACTER: LEADERSHIPEric Shane Marsh ‘90, a Founding Father of the Appalachian State University (NC Omega Tau) Pi Lambda Phi Chapter and superintendent of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, was among the firefighters killed June 29, 2013 while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire near Prescott, Arizona. Eric and all but one of the 19 men who served under him were killed that day when a windblown wildfire overcame them north of Phoenix. An avid mountain biker and native of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Marsh was known for his cool head and “Southern gentleman” demeanor, even in the hairiest of situations.

Eric grew up in North Carolina’s picturesque Ashe County, a sparsely populated tourist destination with a population of 27,000 known for its hiking trails and thriving Christmas tree industry. Eric graduated with honors from Ashe Central High, where he was a running back on the football team. Eric became hooked on fire fighting while studying biology at Appalachian State. Eric worked and excelled at several jobs, but the one that really grabbed his heart was wildland fire fighting. Eric cut his wildland teeth with the Globe Hotshots and worked several years with that crew out of the Tonto National Forest. He kept working as a firefighter, eventually landing a full-time job and settling in northern Arizona. Eric met his wife in Prescott Valley, and they were together for six years, married for three. He even moved his parents to the state.Eric was a rock and ice climber who proposed to his wife on an ice climbing trip to Ouray, Colorado. He was an equestrian with a great love for his horse “Shorty,” a skier and ski patroller at Sunrise Mountain, fisherman, motorcyclist, and avid cyclist and mountain biker. He had lately been competing in endurance mountain bike races and most recently competed in a 24-hour mountain bike race as part of a 4-person relay team. He and a friend had made a pact to compete in the next 24-hour race as solo competitors. Eric loved being in the woods and thrived on pushing his body to its limits. He joined the City of Prescott in 2003 as part of the Fuels Management Crew and then started to work toward building a city-sponsored wildland team. The development of the Granite Mountain Hotshots became a focus and goal for Eric and he was an

instrumental part of the organization and certification of the team. His passion for wildland fire fighting and desire to share his almost 20 years of knowledge and experience put him in a position to help start the Arizona Wildfire Academy (initially operating out of his living room), where he taught basic fire fighting, Squad Boss, and leadership classes. He took pride in his ability to share that knowledge and experience with the young firefighters and liked to say that working on the crew “turned boys into men.” Marsh spent most of his professional career fighting wildfires – a rarity for a job that generally draws younger guys who see fire fighting as a stepping stone to something else, Prescott Fire Capt. Jeff Knotek said. He started working on forming his own Hotshots team eight years ago, when he worked as part of a municipal fuels management crew in Prescott that

focused on clearing overly dense vegetation. The group made the ranks of Hotshots in 2008, the first municipal crew of elite, Hotshot firefighters in the nation. While the federal government certifies teams as highly-qualified Hotshots – groups that are often dispatched to the hottest part of a blaze to clear fuels and protect structures – Marsh’s group was unique because it operated as part of a city fire department, rather than a state or federal agency. During the off-season, Marsh worked as an instructor, helping to train hundreds of Arizona firefighters. Sedona firefighter Mark Beneitone was one of his many students, and remembered Marsh telling vivid stories – enlivening classes that might otherwise have been a chore because of the litany of rules and

procedures involved in fighting wildland fires.“You were sitting at your desk,” he said, “but you were able to picture it. He was so well known for his quotes and sayings that his crew started to write down his “Eric-isms.”Eric built the Granite Mountain Hotshots from nothing – and died trying to protect the crew that friends say constituted his life’s work. His father, John Marsh, said in an interview with The Associated Press “He was a loving and caring son, and he was compassionate and concerned about the well-being of the crew members’” “He was concerned for them, not just in the fire. They were like his family.” Amanda Marsh, wife of Eric Marsh, said Eric “was 90 percent Hotshot, and the 10 percent was left for us.”

In the same statement, however, she said, “he loved me more than I’ve ever been loved in my life.”Eric’s wife Amanda and his parents John and Jane would most want Eric be remembered as a compassionate, good-hearted, loyal, and generous man of integrity who loved his family and his life, and who loved being a Granite Mountain Hotshot.

Rest in peace, Brother Eric.

As undergraduate Brothers, we don’t know where the paths of Brotherhood will take us. During Desert Shield in 1991, Brother Barry Richards ‘87, PA Sigma Upsilon was awaiting action while deployed with the United States Army. Fellow Founding Father Rob Seitzinger ’86 at Shippensburg University decided to send care packages to him and others.

Rob coordinated the assemblage of the care packages. He received support from many Brothers who wanted to let Barry and others know they were not forgotten. The packages always had letters from fellow Brothers, some games, and odd fun things Rob may have found while going to the store. Barry would send his appreciation for the packages, updates of Army life, and a request for one specific item. Every reply asked for more silly string. The silly string ended up in the first care package on a whim. After a couple of requests, Rob was dying to know, “Why silly string?” He was expecting it was a joke, or reminded someone of home. Barry’s reply let him know his troops were actually using it to clear areas looking for trip wires.

Rob has created Freedom Fighters East Coast,(https://www.facebook.com/FreedomFightersEastCoast)a nonprofit that raises money to send Care Packages to active duty soldiers. Working out of his home in New Jersey, Rob has collected items to help our men and women serving overseas. He proudly works various fairs and events to obtain more supplies and notes to send. Donated items range from toiletries, shampoo, snacks, magazines, and hygiene products.

Rob is offering to send care packages to all our fellow Pilam Brothers. To help visit Please visit their website or call 609-827-9843. Financial donations will help

purchase items and pay for postage. A package costs US$14.85 to ship to Afghanistan, so your help can go a long way. Receiving a reminder from home means a tremendous amount when deployed overseas.

You may also donate the following items:

• Travel size toiletries (razors, skin lotions, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, hand sanitizers, lip balm, etc.)

• Beef Jerky/Slim Jims• Power Bars, Granola Bars, Protein Bars• Individual Drink Mix pouches• Snacks, Pretzels, Tasty Kakes• Comic Books, Puzzle Books, Magazines• Sanitary Wipes• Feminine Products (hygiene, hair wraps,

deodorant, barrettes, hair gel)• Band-Aids, First Aid items• Pencils, Pens, Paper• Candy (no chocolate) and Gum• Combs and Brushes• Small tissue packs

CHAPTER SNAPSHOTSHelping Those Away from Home THE REALITIES OF

PUBLISHING THE FRATERThe Frater, the original Pi Lambda Phi magazine, was first published in 1915. Originally, The Frater was published four times annually and was intended to be a lifetime subscription to keep all Pilam Alumni connected to the operation of their Fraternity.

Technology has increased the ability to share news in a timely manner through the Fraternity website, email, Facebook, Twitter, and plenty of other social media tools. These new methods allow the Fraternity to stay connected with the entire Brotherhood while reducing the costs to produce and mail a printed magazine. The savings from even a single printing can fund several scholarships and educational programs offered to our undergraduate Brothers. The Trustees constantly review programs for ways to increase the value of your donations.

Sharing information is vital to our Brotherhood. We want to connect with you and keep you updated. We hope you find this digital version of The Frater useful. Please stay connected with us by “Liking” the Pi Lambda Phi page on Facebook, and visiting our website frequently. Updates are posted weekly to let you know what your Brothers are accomplishing.

We hope you enjoy this issue of The Frater.

If you are unable to view The Frater, you may instead request a printed version by calling the Fraternity Headquarters (203-740-1044) where the IHQ staff are standing by to assist you.

CHAPTER SNAPSHOTSMany great things happen at Pilam Chapters and Colonies. The following snapshots show the highlights of their efforts during the Fall 2013 Semester.

NC Epsilon Kappa Chapter at North Carolina State UniversityThe NC Epsilon Kappa Chapter had a great start to their fall semester. Some of their events and developments included:• The Chapter is in the process of implementing a new standards program with

the International Executive Council that will establish minimum requirements for GPA, community service hours, and student organization involvement for each Brother. This ensures that Pi Lam will continue to have one of the highest GPA averages in the Greek community.

• Recruiting the first double digit New Member Class in years, with ten New Members for the Fall and two more already confirmed for the Spring semesters. Pinning was held on September 13th for the Alpha Mu New Member Class. Snaps to all the active Brothers and Alumni for their stellar recruiting.

• Pledge Campout was in late October and Alumni were also encouraged to attend and participate.

• The annual Alumni tailgate was held on November 2nd, before the UNC game.• The Chapter Formal was held November 15-17th in Tybee Beach, just outside

of Savanna, Georgia. Ocean beach houses were rented and the formal dinner was held in Savanna. Snaps to Brother Josh Neal for planning it.

MD Kappa Delta Colony at Salisbury UniversityThe MD Kappa Delta also accomplished some great activities in the Fall Semester:• Rush BBQ event (grilling hotdogs/burgers, cornhole, etc) was a great recruiting

event for the fall class and many other interested guys are also interested in joining this spring.

• Officially launched the Chapter’s website www.plpmdkd.com.• Sent out first edition of the alumni newsletter Pi Lambda Phlyer in November.• Big fundraising event “Knockout Prejudice” Basketball tournament was

performed to raise money and awareness towards Elimination of Prejudice.• 6 person New Member class initiated in late November 23rd.• Main goal for upcoming spring semester is to pursue Chartering to meet our

Convention always provides a time for the undergraduate Brothers to share their aspirations with each other. Undergraduates arrive with their suitcase in hand and experiences on their shoulders. The

journey over those next few days takes them through Leadership, Recruitment, Financial management, Risk management, and the Ideals of Pi Lambda Phi.

Their journey connects them with both other Chapter and Alumni leaders that share those same responsibilities, but at different Chapters. Alumni from near and far will advise lessons learned from generations going back to the Fraternities Refounding. The professional staff highlights what they have learned and help advise and guide for the coming year.

Pittsburgh provided an idyllic setting for the 118th Convention. The NY Phi Lambda Chapter at Adelphi University received the George A. Beck Outstanding Chapter Award. This is awarded to the Pilam Chapter with the best results in academics, recruitment, philanthropy, and risk management. The Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation recognized Joel Smalley ’56, PA Gamma Sigma with the Big Pi Award. Joel in addition to being a lifetime mentor and Chapter Advisor has been a significant contributor within the Pittsburgh community.

On the last day of the Pi Lambda Phi Convention, both undergraduates and alumni leave tired and inspired. Leaders return to their Chapters where they will share their Convention experiences. The leaders will look to convert opportunities into outstanding results.

THE CREED OF PI LAMBDA PHIThat all men are created free and equal.

∫¢That no society of men can flourish

unless members of that societyare endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom.

∫¢That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice --

That the elimination of prejudicemeans a better understanding ‘twixt men.

∫¢That it is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom even with my life.

∫¢That it is incumbent upon me, in my personal life,

to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice.∫¢

That because my country is dedicated to the highest standardsof freedom and justice for all men of all creeds,

I hereby pledge allegiance to my country, and to its national symbol.
