Dismissal
With luck now that April has arrived we’re leaving Winter behind and warmer, brighter
days are ahead of us!
I have waited to write this message until after today’s announcement from the Ministry
of Education regarding possible school closures in the near future. As you have likely
already heard, At this time, we expect schools to re-open for face-to-face
learning after the Easter Weekend, as well as after the April Break. However,
plans and messaging from the Ministry change quickly, so please continue to monitor
your email and other media sources for continuing updates regarding the status
of school closures in the province.
Even with this recent announcement of face-to-face learning continuing, on the Board’s
direction, we have sent students home ahead of this long weekend with their personal
items (e.g., clothing, indoor shoes, water bottles, medication, etc.) and a chromebook
and charger if requested. When we return to school on Tuesday, April 6th as
anticipated, please send these items back with your child. We will repeat the same
process on Friday, April 9th when we head into the April break. We recognize this is
somewhat of an inconvenience, but these are challenging times to say the least and we
are trying our best to be prepared for any eventuality.
Speaking of challenging times, I would like to recognize the initiative of FSPS parent,
Shawna Ferguson, who is organizing an FSPS Staff Appreciation initiative. Shawna is
hoping to gather positive and encouraging comments from Franklin Families about
Franklin Staff. Comments can be provided on a Google Form, then they will be compiled
and shared with FSPS Staff in a display in the school. Hey, everyone needs a little
encouragement from time to time, so why not spend a minute to give a teacher,
Educational Assistant, Office Worker, or Caretaker a few words of encouragement! The
Google Form can be found at https://forms.gle/4mnZFt52QXZuqpM18. Additional
details can be found on page 3 of this newsletter.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience. It is greatly appreciated. For up to
date information from the Board’s perspective, please visit www.yrdsb.ca and the
Board’s twitter feed @yrdsb. Together our collaborative efforts will ensure Franklin
Street P.S. remains a school of excellence!

School Resumes April 19
This is the time of year that school staff begin the collaborative process of
class placement decisions. Classroom teachers, in cooperation with support
staff, administration, and parental input work diligently to create balanced
classes for the upcoming school year. School staff consider the
academic, social, and emotional strengths, needs and interests,
and more of each student when preparing class lists. The ultimate
goal of class placement is to support and enhance the learning of all
students. We welcome any input you wish to share about your child’s
strengths, needs, and learning styles. However, requests for specific
teachers cannot be considered. The responsibility for final decisions lies
with administration. Please send any information you would like
considered about your child’s placement for next year to Mr.
Black ([email protected])no later than May 7th.

The Math Corner
Monthly Math Problem
In this sequence of numbers (3, 7, 10, 17, 27), after the first two, each number is the sum
of the previous two numbers. If you want the fifth number to 100, what two positive
numbers could you start with?
Spring Math - Math is Outside Too!
Spring and nice weather make for a great time to get outdoors and connect with math.
Whether you are taking a walk, filling compost bags with leaves or starting to build that
garden shed, there are many opportunities to engage in rich mathematical discussions
with your child.
Here are some questions you can pose to your child as you engage with nature:
What shapes do you see in that house?
How tall do you think that tree is?
How far do you think we walked today?
How many piles of leaves do you think will fit into this bag?
How many ___ did you see on our walk?
How many windows do you think are in that building?
How long do you think it will take us to walk one kilometer?
If we double our pace how long do you think it will take us to get home?
So the next time you spend some time outdoors with your child, take some time to
engage in some math talk!

ALLERGY ALERT
Ensuring a Safe and Healthy School for All Children
ALL STUDENTS are asked to NOT bring any foods that may contain peanuts and/or
nuts, or nut byproducts. In MANY CLASSES we also ask for every family's help to NOT
send seafood, shellfish, sesame. Details about specific allergens in your child’s classroom will be
sent home in early September.
Please check the list of ingredients carefully when selecting food for your children’s lunches and snacks. Please avoid
products that say “may contain peanuts/nuts”. Imported products have different labeling requirements, so please read
the labels carefully when sending these products to school. If you are unsure about a chosen product, please do not
send it to school. Thank you for your cooperation. Remember, we must all work together to keep children safe!
Since September 2017 we have also been asking parents to NOT send food to school to recognize
student birthdays, special days, etc. In an effort to consider allergy and religious/cultural limitations that make
many food choices inappropriate we suggest alternate ways to recognize student birthdays without providing food (i.e.
Dollarama gift bags, pencils, a book with your child’s name in it donated to the classroom library or school library,
etc.). Thank you for your cooperation.
WE APPRECIATE YOU!DEAR FRANKLIN ST . PS STAFF !

staff to see and appreciate. :)
