Members It is great sadness that I advise you that, on the weekend, our fellow Rotarian, Bill Mitchell passed away after a long illness. Bill was a long time member of the club and more recently an honorary member after illness prevented his attendance at club meetings. A private funeral for Bill was held on Tuesday and Kurt Walder, Bill’s long time friend and Rotary companion was in attendance. We remember Bill fondly and pass on our condolences to Tui and family at this time of great loss. Our guest speaker this week Leah Sertori from Central Victoria Solar Cities provided a well presented and interested address on what is an extremely important topic. The dual emphasis on reductions in energy consumption and utilising alternative energy sources, in particular the source of all our power the sun, is sure to make a difference in our community. It’s good to hear about some of the solutions rather than the problems. I would also like thank Val Broad for the wonderful job she did as Sergeant of Arms this week, its wonderful to hear some great jokes, well delivered. It is one of the few circumstances where the payment of fines is happy occasion, I would also like to congratulate our exchange student, Alina, on the way she handled the pressure of her first weekly address to the Club. I think we are in for another great exchange. See you at next weeks meeting. Just for Fun While on maternity leave, a woman brought her new bundle of joy and her seven year old son to her office. Everyone gathered around the baby, and the little boy asked, "Mummy, can I have some money to buy some chocolate?” "What do you say?" she asked. Respectfully, the boy replied, "You're thin and beautiful." The woman reached in her purse and gave her son the money.

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought

Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution “I am confident that I am demonstrating a commitment to Rotary ideals – furthering peace and cultural tolerance – through the work that I produce.” Alissa Nicole Creamer As a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, Alissa Nicole Creamer got a close-up look at how people recover from the ravages of war. While studying documentary filmmaking in Spain, she participated in a project supported by 60 Spanish Rotary clubs to fund rehabilitation of child victims of land mine explosions. Nearly every day for three months, Creamer visited two Angolan children at a local hospital. She got to know their life stories and now she is directing a documentary film that tells their story to the world. Donations to The Rotary Foundation allows Rotary to sponsor and host Ambassadorial scholars, and in so doing, to give the world hope for the future.

News on a former Exchange Student.

On their recent overseas holiday Joy Bruce and Garry Gunnell were able to catch up with former Hungarian Exchange Student (2000/01), Linda Bozsik who now resides in Budapest. Linda has certainly packed a lot into the years since her time in Bendigo having returned to Hungary and soon after commenced University studies. Towards the end of University she was successful in obtaining a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship which took her to America for 12 months study. At the end of that she gained 3 months work experience in the Hungarian Embassy in Washington and then returned to complete university. There was also a scholarship to under take political studies in Paris for 3 months; a very successful time and some great experiences. Her Rotary connections have continued to be very strong, ongoing part of her life especially with Rotaract. Over the years she has held many positions and recently completed her time in the top position as District Governor of Rotaract for Hungary. Linda now has a very good job working for a multi-national company where boy-friend Peter is also employed. Linda is currently considering an offer of working on a major project for 6 months based in Vienna which will involve working away each week. Peter is also not standing still and has been selected to represent Hungary at a United Nations Youth Forum in Mexico early September. All this happing while they have recently purchased an apartment in Budapest and now in the middle of a complete renovation as seen in the attached photo. Linda hopes one day to be able to return to Bendigo for a visit, asked about all her host families and passed on her best wishes to all club members. Interestingly her younger brother has also started on the same path and has just commenced 12 months as an Exchange Student in Dubbo, New South Wales.
