English & Library Update...

Term 3 in the English, Drama and Languages Faculty offers many new topics and exciting class room activities. Here is an insight into what our students will be studying and taking part in:

Year 7 - What is Poetry? In this unit students will review aspects of poetry; read, listen and respond to various poetic forms and texts; analyse and discuss how language features are used to evoke particular effects; become confident in interpreting meaning in poetry; become confident in using poetic techniques in their own writing; identify, use and play with particular poetic techniques to express ideas and convey them to an audience; and enjoy, create, share and perform their own poetry. Assessment due Monday 9th September.

Year 8 - Cartoons and Comics. This unit seeks to introduce students to cartoons and comics. The unit starts by encouraging students to explore and examine a variety of cartoons and comics and analyse the form and technique. Students will be encouraged to create their own cartoons and comics. Cartoons are powerful teaching tools and can tell a complex story in a few images, provide comment and provoke thought on events and issues in the news, give an example of vocabulary related to current trends and fads, provide easily identifiable characters to form the basis for sketches, show culture in action with the ways that men or women are behaving and are expected to behave, and comment on and illustrate a whole range of issues like racism, teenage relationships, sexism, ageism, family relationships and the environment. Assessment due Monday 16th September.

Year 9 - Introduction to Shakespeare (Macbeth). Students are introduced to the life and times of Shakespeare, the Elizabethan theatre, the structure and language of Shakespeare’s plays and the idea of context in drama. Students develop their understanding of the nature of tragedy and explore the play from different perspectives as part of

their critical study of the play. Students will compare various adaptations of the play in film to demonstrate how interpretations and productions of the play change over time and when set in different settings. Assessment due Monday 9th September.

Year 10 - War and Conflict. This unit will focus on society’s attitude to war and conflict. Students will closely examine war poems and develop skills in poetic analysis. Students explore how poets create distinctive voices in poetry and select and consider related texts. The unit also covers the study of the film Gallipoli and/or Dunkirk leading as visual language. Students write their own poetry and short stories and eventually write a text response essay discussing verbal and visual features of Gallipoli. Assessment due Monday 16th September.

As a faculty we use Edmodo to put up assignment notifications and other information that will assist students in their study. Please encourage your children to check this regularly particularly if they have been away. You can also sign in to the parent Edmodo account and see posts about assignments from our faculty.

At the end of last term, students from Years 7-10 had the opportunity to participate in Galston High School’s first author in residence program with Award-winning Young Adult author, Will Kostakis. This program involved students in 7X, 8X, and select students in Years 9 and 10.

During the program, Will Kostakis spoke to students about the creative writing process and how he has turned events from his own life into some of his most popular novels – The First Third and The Sidekicks. Each year group then participated in workshops focusing on different areas writing, including how to create a realistic “voice” through narration, how to show realistic character development, and how to edit a creative writing piece more effectively while including techniques that make the story more engaging.

These skills will assist students as they undertake formal and external assessments that require mastery and control over the English language such as NAPLAN and the HSC, but has also helped ignite students’ passion for and confidence in creative writing. The program was a resounding success, with students reporting in the post-program survey that the program gave them more confidence with their writing skills and were more likely to write creatively in their own time.

Post-Program Survey results:

Library (cont’d)...

What is one thing you are most proud of achieving during this program?

“Improving the way I start a story and being able to make my story more interesting because of voice”

“I am proud of the amount that I learnt in this workshop. It has made me so much more comfortable in my writing skills and I feel as though I am able to include

a wider variety of techniques and skills in my writing now.”

“being able to come up with random story ideas to explore and write about”

“I am proud of developing my editing skills, understanding the power of editing and how editing can get you easy marks.

I signed up for the Author in Residence program because I really enjoy creative writing and I also admire Will Kostakis as an author. I had read his books previously, and my favourite book by him, The First Third was something that I wouldn’t normally read. I don’t usually enjoy books about family relationships, but The First Third really stood out to me because it had a nice balance between focusing on emotions and real life events, and the characters seemed very realistic.

I was excited to participate in this program because I wanted to see how I could improve my own writing, and the workshops that Will Kostakis ran taught me a lot. One thing I have struggled with in the past is getting so caught up in describing the surroundings and events that I don’t really focus on the character narrating the story, but during the workshops I learned how to show the voice of my character more effectively. The workshops we did also showed me other ways of writing a story rather than just focusing on an orientation, complication and conclusion. We learned how this narrative structure isn’t the only way to structure a story, and that it’s possible to tell a really effective and interesting story at a character’s point of change.

Participating in the Author in Residence program has made me a more confident and effective writer, and I have already used many of the strategies we were introduced to in my creative writing.

-Anisia Plaskitt, Year 10
