Greetings! I would like to take the opportunity inthis, my first The President Reports column to intro-duce myself. I am the pastor of Community Churchhere in Flamborough – a relatively new church toFlamborough that my wife Carla and I started 7 yearsago. It has been a great adventure and the church iscontinuing to grow and contribute to enhancing lifehere in our community.
Our family has lived in Waterdown since the fall of2004. Before coming to Waterdown, I pastored in a
small northern communitycalled Englehart, as well as in abusy Asian city. I have beenmarried to my wonderful wifeCarla for 14 years and we havethe world’s most amazing kids –Grace and Caleb. I may be a bitbiased here, but they truly areincredible.
When I am not workingwith the church or in the com-munity, I like to kick back byriding motorcycles, playinghockey and downhill skiing.
You may ask why a pastor of a church would getelected as the President of the Board of Directors(BOD) of the local chamber of commerce.
The reason I am I involved in the FlamboroughChamber of Commerce (FCC) is that I am deeplycommitted to the health of our community and I be-lieve that in order for our Flamborough to be healthy,it needs to be strong in all aspects. It needs to bestrong socially, economically, spiritually and com-mercially. I believe in order for Flamborough to trulybe healthy, its businesses must be healthy.
I love Flamborough and want to see it continue togrow stronger. Since moving to Waterdown, I haveworked hard at investing in local businesses throughencouragement, support and coaching. I believe theFCC makes a difference by advocating for and sup-porting local businesses. I welcome the challenge tocontinue to invest in Flamborough as the FCCPresident. I believe these are exciting times for Flam-borough as we to grow everyday.

Jason Small (second from right), pastor of the Flamborough Community Church has been elected the 2012-2013 President ofthe Board of Directors (BOD) of the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce (FCC) succeeding Hal Bushey (right). Joining Jason as offi-cers of the FCC BOD are (from left) Treasurer Graham Flint (FORCE - Friends of Rural Communities and the Environment) and VicePresident (and a FCC BOD Past President) Penny Gardiner (Economic Developers Association of Canada and the Hamilton Tech-nology Centre at Clappison’s Corners). By electing a pastor as the President of its Boardof Directors (BOD), the Flamborough Chamber ofCommerce (FCC) may have exercised some radical‘thinking outside the box.’
In considering who should succeed outgoingPresident Hal Bushey – who has served the FCC withdistinction for two years – the BOD agreed that ‘run-ning a church is a lot like running a business’ andelected Rev. Jason Small as its 2012-2013 President.
Since their arrival some seven years ago, Jasonand his wife Carla have lived out the name of theirchurch – the Flamborough Community Church.
Joining Jason as officers of the FCC BOD are VicePresident Penny Gardiner (Economic Developers
Association of Canada and the Hamilton Techno-logy Centre at Clappison’s Corners); Secretary RonGraham (Lafarge Canada); and, Treasurer GrahamFlint (FORCE – Friends of Rural Communities andthe Environment). Along with Past President HalBushey, they are joined on the 9-member BOD byTeresa Luckanuck (Spoiled Rotten Pet Services);Wendy Martin (Sutton About Town Real Estate);Greg Tremble (OLG Slots @ Flamboro Downs); and,Wendy Wasylowich (Great Canadian Gaming).
Under revisions to the bylaws approved by themembers in September, the primary focus of theBOD is to set official FCC ‘policy’ and – with over-sight – leave the day-to-day ‘management’ to staff.

This holiday season – in the spirit ofgiving – Lafarge Canada is excited to help the less for-tunate and most vulnerable.
Throughout the two weeks of November 26 toDecember 7, Lafarge Greensville will be collectingnon-perishable food items, used clothing and mone-
tary donations for the needy in the greater Hamiltonarea. The goal is to collect 10 tonnes (or 10,000 kilo-grams) of food and clothing across Lafarge operationsin Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area.
Collected items in the Hamilton area will be dis-tributed among the Flamborough Food Bank, MissionServices in Hamilton and Food Share Hamilton.
All donations can be dropped off Monday to Fri-day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lafarge Quarry locatedat 628 Highway 5 West in Greensville.

Ted Lindsay (Flamborough Review) andhis wife Heather Johnston, who were recipients of the Sandra Gray/Weeks Home Hardware Community Service by an Individual OBA Award in 2008 hosted the 10th annual Eric’s Amazing Race in earlyNovember to support research to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The event – named in honour of their nephew Eric Morden of Oakville who suffers from the disease – has raised over $150,000in the past decade. The proceeds raised are provided to Jesse’s Journey – a London-based charity leading the fight against DMD. Voters in Michiganmassively rejected ballot Proposal 6, ameasure which would have blocked thestate government from moving aheadon the construction of the NewInternational Trade Crossing betweenWindsor and Detroit.
“This is a great victory for citizens
and businesses on both sides of theborder. Michigan and Canada shareone of the largest trade relationships inthe world,” Beatty said. “In many waysit’s a model for the entire Canada/U.S.partnership. With this wise decision,voters have signalled they are ready tocooperate on a huge project to enhancethat partnership.”
Beatty singled out key actors whocontributed to the campaign to tell thetruth to Michigan voters.
“This was made possible becauseof the unprecedented commitment ofthe Government of Canada, the power-ful presence of Canada’s Consul
General Roy Norton, the Windsor-Essex-Regional Chamber of Commerce,the Ontario Chamber of Commerceand our U.S partners,” he said. “Withabout half of all trade between Canadaand the U.S. moving across theMichigan-Ontario border, the region isat the heart of our bilateral trading rela-tionship. A new bridge is long overdue.
“All the chambers of commerce – inWindsor, Ontario and Canada, havelong advocated this critical cross-bor-der infrastructure investment atWindsor-Detroit. It’s an economic life-line for both our countries and we areelated that this attempt to stop it hasfailed.”
The Canadian business communityhas been demanding a second bridge
between Windsor and Detroit for sever-al years. About 10,000 commercial vehi-cles cross the Ambassador Bridge eachday. Almost a quarter of all merchan-dise trade between Canada and the U.S.uses the bridge which links highly inte-grated sectors like the automotiveindustry. However, these same supplylines are extremely vulnerable to de-lays, especially at the border. Thesedelays add costs that decrease produc-tivity and kill jobs.
“The decision by Michigan votersmarks a turning point,” added Mr.Beatty. “The Canadian government,Consul General Norton and MichiganGovernor Snyder have worked hard toget us to move the project along. Nowwe need to see the project through.”

strategy generated interest and excite-ment at this year’s Ontario EconomicSummit (OES) held November 6-8 inNiagara-on-the-Lake.
The strategy, which continues toevolve based on community input, hasemerged over time through a series oflocal economic summits and planningevents organized by the HamiltonChamber of Commerce (HCC) in co-operation with the City of Hamiltonand a variety of partners. Nick Market-tos, a former HCC director and current-ly Assistant Vice President of ResearchPartnerships, McMaster Universityshared highlights at the Ontario TownHall, an interactive session that provid-ed summit delegates with briefingsfrom economic leadership events heldin eight regional centres across Ontarioearlier this year, including Hamilton.Markettos talked about six economicactions for Hamilton moving forward:
• Education: Form a multi-sectorworking group to strengthen collabora-tion among our city’s educational insti-tutions, including McMaster University,Mohawk College and Redeemer Univer-sity College.
• Creative Industries: Leverage ourcity’s many assets to make Hamilton amagnet for creative industries.
• Health Sciences: Position our localhealth sciences cluster – anchored byCanada’s top medical school – as aneconomic value and export-orientedwealth generator.
• Advanced Manufacturing: Ex-pand working partnerships in order topush the research and innovation enve-lope, increase productivity, drive in-vestments and deliver on sustainabilitygoals.
• Transportation: Capitalize on Ha-milton’s intermodal advantages andadvocate for more public investmentsin our transportation networks, includ-ing roads and mass transit.
• Infrastructure: Build smart infra-structure that meets the needs of a 21stcentury Hamilton tied to a growingregional and global economy.
