both in our living and in our dying, both in our living and in our dying, both in our living and in our dying,
we belong to God; we belong to God.we belong to God; we belong to God.we belong to God; we belong to God.

we belong to God; we belong to God.we belong to God; we belong to God.we belong to God; we belong to God.
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
Baptism is the really cool way God lets us know we belong to God. It is about what God does for us: forgiveness,
salvation, life with God each day. When we remember our baptism, we are confessing our need for God and being
renewed in those holy gifts.
During our Epiphany season worship at both First and St. John’s, we will begin our service each Sunday with a
Thanksgiving for Baptism. This is an option offered in the ELW as an alternative to our customary way of confessing
and receiving forgiveness. We pray that as you give thanks and are renewed in the gift of baptism, God will be
working new life in you.
May this new life gather us in and draw us together as the family of God. May it open our hearts to the people
around our churches, people whom God also loves and claims. May it send us out embodying the good news of
Jesus in a world of doubt.
We hope to see you in worship, through the Epiphany season, that you might see all that God is doing.
Peace & Joy!

Sisters and Brothers in Our Lord,
At the December future together team (FTT) meeting, as we discussed possible mission for our two churches to
do together, I was struck by the role that trust plays into mission. First has been holding monthly community dinners to
feed people in the community, but more importantly to meet our neighbors and build relationships. In the book of Ruth,
Ruth remains faithful to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the death of her husband. Ruth accompanies Naomi back to her
homeland in Bethlehem. Ruth asserts, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I
will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God” (1:16). Ruth refuses to let
Naomi go, and Ruth continues to accompany Naomi throughout their lives.
Accompaniment or companionship is central to my theology of pastoral leadership (including pastoral care,
liturgy, and education). I believe that accompaniment is the only effective way to pastor people. If we view pastor as
shepherd it is impossible to think of the role of pastor as anything but one of accompaniment.
Accompaniment means forming relationships with people, accompaniment provides a balance in power
between all of the relational participants, accompaniment means walking with one another in the trials
and triumphs of life. Throughout my internship thus far, I have been completely humbled by the
invitation of others to walk with people in their most vulnerable states. I get to walk with people as
their loved ones are dying, I get to walk with people as they struggle with disease, I get to walk with
people in times of great transition, I get to do these things! This gives me a clear picture of my Christian
freedom, which you might remember our discussions about Christian freedom during our stewardship
Sundays. We are freed in Christ to serve, to be vindicated from the slavery of sin to be servants of our
brothers and sisters (in our immediate and wider communities).
Naomi and Ruth participate in an accompaniment based relationship, which is beautifully illustrated throughout
the book of Ruth. I think that we are called to participate in relationships of accompaniment with every person we
encounter. We are not greater than anyone, we are not greater than the least of these, and we are equal to everyone
from Bill Gates to the homeless in our shelter. We are one in Christ’s body. Paul reminds us in 1 Cor(12:12), “For even as
the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so
also is Christ.” We are many, but we are one and our God calls us to walk with one another through the deep darkness's
of life and the bright lights of salvation.
Above all, these relationships build trust and a firm belief in the reliability of the other. There are many fickle
things in this life that are marked with disappointment and struggle. It is a gem to find a community that one can count
on, and I think that both congregations do a very good job of this on Sunday mornings, but Sunday isn’t the only day of
the week. I think that First is really onto something new and exciting with the trust that they’ve built in the community.
Let us rejoice together in this ministry and look toward mission together in Christ Jesus.
Yours in Christ,
Vicar Lauren A. Blatt
Midweek Worship
Wednesday Jan. 7th
we will be starting to hold worship at 7:00pm. This
worship service will be contemplative prayer, public prayer, repetitive song,
quiet, readings, and “less formal” than Sunday morning’s liturgy. Before and
after worship there will be coffee and snacks. This service is meant to not only
serve as a time away and a time with God, but it also serves as a time to build
community and fellowship with all who gather.

Food Pantry Donations
Please continue to fill the baskets at each church entrance
(one in the narthex and one at each side door entrance) with your
donations for our local food pantry.
Just one or two items (food or personal care items) from each
family on a weekly basis can provide a lot for the poor and hungry
in our community.
Thank you for continuing to support this
important ministry!

Being a Lutheran Christian in Albany in 2015
Pr Allie invites you to join her for a short three week
overview on being a Lutheran Christian in Albany in
2015. While planned as a class for potential new
members for First Lutheran, this is a great opportunity
for those who are already members of our church. In
addition to some good conversation and learning, we
will enjoy getting to know each other. If you’d like to
participate, please call the FLC office 463-1326, or speak
to Pr Allie soon. Pr Allie’s cell is 716-499-1120.
The class will be three one-hour sessions, on three
successive Sundays.

New Members Class
Thank You! Thank You! Janice Logan, Social Ministry Chairperson
We have so many generous people at First Lutheran. You offer your time, your money, your gifts and your caring
throughout the year, but it is especially noticed at the holiday season. We collected 440 mixed fruit cups for the
Equinox Thanksgiving dinner. Thanks to all who donated fruit cups and to Liz and Chuck Peters for delivering them.
We filled 31 shoeboxes of useful items for the Albany Maritime Ministry's "Christmas at Sea" program. We
appreciate the donations from our church members, as well as the work of the Sunday School children, teachers,
parents, local Unitarian church 6th graders, Karen Conklin, Liz Peters, Kim Paonessa, Bernie Shafarzek and Janice
Logan in sorting, packing and wrapping the gift boxes.
First Lutheran adopted 3 families of veterans through the "Adopt A Vet" program for Christmas. These veterans
do so much for our country, and it is a privilege to give them a little "something extra" for their families at Christmas
time. Much thanks to all who bought a present for a member of one of our adopted families.
Thank you to the First Friends for continuing to make sandwiches bi-weekly for the HAC van. They also did a
magnificent job decorating the lounge for Christmas.

FTT Update 12-2-14
• Exploring with CACC director Deb Riitano a kids
lunch program, twice weekly [T, Th] for ten
weeks this summer. Pr Sam Trumbore the
Unitarian Church might have volunteers to work
with us on this. We’d want to add some kind of
fun and personal interaction.
• Meanwhile FTT is working on a fun outreach to
kids for about two daytime hours over each of
the February and Easter breaks. Sandy
O’Connor, Vicar Blatt, and Karen Lapierre are on
the planning committee to make plans for the
Fat Tuesday Kids Carnival. Anyone with ideas
should get to them ASAP. By early January we
will be putting out sign up sheet to get the
volunteer we need for this.
• Next FTT meeting on Jan 5th at 6:00pm.

First Lutheran offers three opportunities
for Memorials and Special Giving
At our June annual meeting First Lutheran clarified the
use of the Abiding Memorial Fund for Capital needs [for
the upkeep and improvement of buildings and grounds].
We also created a second fund, the Mission and Ministry
Fund, as a way to help the church carrying out its work.
In addition, we always have the general fund, which is
undesignated.
Anyone desiring to give a memorial or special gift to
First Lutheran can either give it undesignated, or you
may designate it to either the Abiding Memorial Fund or
to the Mission and Ministry Fund.
First Lutheran welcomes Memorials
and Special Gifts
• undesignated
• designated to Abiding Memorial Fund [for

• designated to Mission and Ministry Fund [for
the work of the church]
Special dates in January

Pray without ceasing The more we pray, the more we shall want to pray. The
more we pray, the more we can pray. The more we
pray, the more we shall pray. He who prays little will
pray less, but he who prays much will pray more. And he
who prays more will desire to pray more abundantly. —

Annual Bowling-for-Beds Bowl-A-Thon
On Saturday, February 7th Cornerstone Campus
Ministry is hosting the Annual “Bowling for Beds” Bowl-A
-Thon to raise money for the Emergency Overflow
Homeless Shelter housed at First Lutheran Church. The
event will be held at Sunset Recreation Center, 1160
Central Avenue from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. and will include
2 games of bowling, shoes, food and prizes. First
Lutheran will again host at least one team and we still
have the opportunity to select the “early” (12:30- 2:30
p.m.) or “late” (2:30 – 4:30 p.m.) session. Please see or
call Sandra O’Connor (458-8796) to let her know your
time preference and to obtain a pledge sheet.
The Capital Region has experienced a significant rise in
the number of homeless men, women and children over
the last few years. Homelessness and the need for
additional shelter beds in Albany County continue to be
a focus for the Capital Area Council of Churches (CACC).
It is our belief that all people, regardless of a person’s
circumstances and behaviors, have a human right to
obtain shelter from deadly weather and dangerous
street-living. Since 2000 the CACC as sponsor and First
Lutheran Church of Albany as host have responded to
this crisis by providing an Emergency Overflow Shelter
with professionally trained staff, operating through the
cold weather months, 7 days a week, 12 hours each day.
Like last year, the event is open to ALL ages – children,
youth and adults! Students from Cornerstone Campus
Ministry at the University at Albany will be assisting the
planning team with hosting the event. Participants will
be encouraged to get pledges and work towards our
common goal of raising at least $10,000 towards the
work of the shelter.
