When The First Tee was founded on the national level in 1997, one of its most enthusiastic supporters was Lewis Rudin, a builder-philanthropist who saw this fledging organization as a way for him to merge his lifetime commitment to education and his love of golf. Mr. Rudin worked tirelessly to form our local Chapter in the City of New York that he loved, and his legacy through the program continues with his son William, and grandson Michael, who joined The First Tee of Metropolitan New York’s Board in 2010.

Now serving as the Co-Chairman of the Campaign for the Next 10 and the Young Benefactors organization, Michael continues the Rudin family’s support of this education and youth development initiative as a key leader for The First Tee. And through the Lew Rudin Charity Golf Classic held each May entering its 12th year, a number of students from the program have received scholarships at attend NYU thanks to the generosity of their family and friends.

“The First Tee is fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals who are involved with their communities and interested in providing opportunities for area children,” said Joe Louis Barrow, CEO of The First Tee National organization. “The First Tee offers young people so much more than just the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf, it also helps them grow as individuals through the Life Skills experience, which is a key component of the program.”

From what was just a concept nearly twenty years ago when the initiative was announced in Central Park, the Rudins’ central role in its development cannot be overstated, and through Michael’s leadership of the Campaign for the Next 10, the future success of the organization will be assured for many years to come.

“My grandfather helped found The First Tee back in 1997, so it is very fulfilling for me to continue the legacy of our family involvement with such a great organization,” said Michael Rudin. “The national and local chapters have come such a long way in the last 16 years and it’s really amazing to see the impact that we have on the lives of so many kids and their families.”

"The First Tee of Metropolitan New York would like to thank the Rudin family for their ongoing support and guidance in helping us to serve thousands of children each year, allowing us to have a meaningful impact that benefits not only those youth served but our entire community through their generosity," said Barry McLaughlin, Executive Director.

Years of Rudin Family Support

The dedication of this facility in 2012 has allowed us to have a place to teach educational programs through Path to College, as well as a location for students to gather to review lessons from the program. (Pictured is a group of students being taught by Coach Strickland prior to hitting the golf course). Thank you to the generosity of the Ryans and Wilf for their tremendous commitment through this bricks and mortor project and investment in our programs that will ahve a long-lasting impact on youth in Newark.

When The First Tee sought out a location in Northern New Jersey, Weequahic Golf Course in Newark presented the perfect setting as a truly urban facility. After the creation of an outdoor learning space in 2006 where young people were introducted to life skills through golf, it became apparent that a year-round indoor classroom space was needed. Through the support of Trustees Kevin Ryan and Len Wilf, our Chapter was able to complete this ambitious project in partnership with Essex County Department of Parks.

The GOLFWORKS program was founded in 1994 by the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Charitable Foundation with the purpose of giving youth from urban and financially disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to succeed and change their lives forever. “The collaboration between the MGA and The First Tee on this program has been a tremendous success,” stated MGA Executive Director and TFTMNY Secretary Jay Mottola. “It allows us to give more advanced First Tee students an opportunity to not only gain valuable work experience, but also to pass on the life lessons they have learned to younger participants.” Providing these teenagers with exposure to summer employment and mentoring at local area golf clubs, the program has now grown to include more than 230 young people each year. In order to help expand and improve this important initiative, Morgan Stanley has come on board to increase its impact.

Morgan Stanley Supports Golfworks

With the support of Morgan Stanley this past year, The First Tee was able to do the following:- Hire an additional 25 youth interns to serve The First Tee facilities throughout the Metropolitan area, providing these youth with important work experience- Improve our student/instructor ratio, with many of the interns working as peer mentors to other students participating in the program- Retain more teenage participants and allow them to continue their growth in The First Tee

For the past ten years, the MGAF and the local First Tee chapter have worked cooperatively to make GOLFWORKS interns an integral part of their efforts to teach young people the positive values, such as honesty, integrity and perseverance, The First Tee embraces. This partnership has included GOLFWORKS interns working at official TFT facilities such as the Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx, as well other sites throughout the area. The interns are advanced students in the summer employment program and, given their past experience in working at clubs, they move naturally to become instructors, coaches and mentors to the younger First Tee participants.

We thank Morgan Stanley for their generous funding to allow us to continue to pursue our goals as an organization and serve more young people with their continued support!
