Our mission at St. Francis de Sales is to joyfully welcome you to our parish family of faith, trusting that: if you are seeking Christ,
you will find Him here. If grieving, you will receive comfort. If troubled in spirit, you will receive the blessing of peace without being judged. If discouraged, you will rejoice in hope. If alone,
you will find companionship and Christian love. May our parish be a sanctuary of peace for you as we journey
together to the Father’s house.

FIRST COMMUNION
Congratulations to all of the children who have received
their special sacrament of First Communion this year! It has
been a wonderful journey and we have truly enjoyed getting
to know all of you and your beautiful children. Thanks so
much to all the teachers, EA’s and principals for all your
support in preparing the children for their sacraments. A
very special thank you to our Catechists Brenda Walters,
Kavita Fischer and Celia Mc Neil for sharing your time and
talents while preparing the children for their sacraments.
Thank you to our First Communion team for your help each
week stamping passports, helping with the retreats and for
your support on the children’s sacramental days. Thank you
to everyone that jumped in to help with the passport
stamping. We truly appreciate all of your time and
commitment to the Sacramental program. Most importantly,
thank you so much to the parents and grandparents for
bringing your children to Mass each week. Jesus said, let
the children come to me and do not stop them, because the
kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these (Mathew 19:14).
FAMILY OF FAITH Please remember to contribute toward your
pledge, which you made to the Family of Faith
campaign. Your continued payments of your
commitment to our campaign will enable us to
fund future projects, which will help in many
practical ways to welcome and to serve those
who come to encounter Christ.
2 JUNE 2019
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Forty days after the Resurrection of Christ, which we
celebrated on 21 April 2019, the Ascension of Our Lord is
on Thursday 30 May 2019. How come we are celebrating
the Ascension on the weekend of 1 & 2 June 2019? The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has a special
permission from the Holy See to celebrate the Ascension of
Our Lord on the Sunday following the 6th Sunday of Easter.
Because the Ascension of Christ is an important event in the
life of every Christian, it was felt that if we kept the Ascension
on the Thursday, many Catholic Christians would miss the
event in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. Hence, this celebration
was moved to the “7th Sunday” of Easter.
How is this celebration of the Ascension important to
Christians? Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances had, no doubt shown that
He belonged already to the upper world of light and glory; but
with the Ascension, His fleeting visits to His apostles and
disciples came to an end and the heavens received Him from
their sight. When Jesus passed into the heavens, He would
remain there until His second coming. For us Christians today,
it is through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that we are to
come nearer to Christ than ever before, and He is to be with us
forever (John 14:16-18).
Big deal! So what? This is a big deal for us Christians. Christ gained for us some
benefits which we did not have before his Ascension.
The first gift Jesus gained for us was that He was exalted as
our Advocate in the presence of God the Father. As our High
Priest who offered the perfect and final sacrifice of His Body
forever, Jesus enters Heaven and sits at the right hand of the
Father as our King-Priest. Jesus as our King-Priest
communicates through the Holy Spirit, these heavenly gifts
and blessings which He won for all mankind.
The second gift is that the dust of the earth is on the Throne of
the Majesty on High. Christ is in Heaven not as a beggar at the
foot stool on High, but as a crowned prince on the throne, at
the right side of the Father. Jesus is a sure pledge of his people,
who as our Head, will take up our concerns and us His
members to Himself.
The third gift is that of the Holy Spirit as the earnest of the
promised inheritance. The Holy Spirit was not given in the
fullness of His gracious working in the souls of men and
women, until Jesus was glorified (John 7:39). The Risen Lord
lives in heavenly communion with His and Our Father and that
Jesus takes an active part in the working of His Church. The
Ascended Lord is with us in the struggle here on Earth and that
He went to Heaven to prepare a place for us (John 14:2;
Hebrews 6:20).
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) If you know of a non-Catholic in our neighbourhood who would
like to join the Catholic Church, please have him or her phone
Father Joe for an appointment. Our classes will begin 25
September.
If you are unable to give to this weekend’s Share Life Collection,
you may place your donation in any Sunday basket; bring it into
the parish office; or give by way of credit card (by visiting
www.sharelife.org), before the end of July which is the closing of
the ShareLife Appeal for 2019. Our third major collection for Share
Life is 2 June. Thank you for your generosity. To date we have
collected $47,590 (66%) of our Parish goal which is $71,800.
