Logos

Objective: Each logo was created for a company or event I took part in throughout my time at Highline. Logo design is quite possibly my favorite aspect of Visual Communications. I enjoy working with clients to develop the cornerstone of their brand and researching new and interesting ways to represent them. All logos were created in Illustrator.

Bat Against Cancer

Objective: I needed to create a shape using typography that would be easily recognizable. I wanted to use a creative writing piece about my mother’s battle with breast cancer, but knew it wouldn’t fit in the shape of the cancer ribbon. I originally planned to use a solid color for the ribbon and wrap the text around it; however, I found the composition looked better with an excerpt of the story instead. I used Illustrator to create the ribbon shape and then I used the text wrap feature in InDesign for the background story.

This is the story of a beautiful, intelligent, influential woman who went up to bat against breast cancer, and struck out. It was 1998 and she had just gotten the call up from the majors: “Terri, we need you to go up to bat against cancer.” Casting her fears and doubts aside, my mother looked that challenge right in the face and said “I'm going up to the plate.” As she sauntered onto the field, the crowd cheered out loud; but on the inside, they quietly prayed to the baseball gods. “Please Babe, please Jackie, let this loving and caring oncology pharmacist prove to her patients and to the world that cancer can’t win ‘em all.” Terri stepped into the bat- ter’s box, prepared for any pitch that came her way. Looking at her, the crowd could see that she wore her disease on her sleeve. She wore no wig, no prosthesis, completely confident in her own skin. Calm, cool, and collected, Terri prepared to take the first pitch. STRIKE! Fastball down the middle, she got caught look- ing. Taking a minute between pitches, Terri began to day- dream about all of the ACS Relay for Life walks she and her family participated in, the Susan G Komen races she at- tended, and the countless pa-tients, coworkers and friends she had inspired and coached through the lengthy process of batting against cancer. Feeling refreshed, Terri stepped back up to the plate. Knocking the bat against her cleats, she swung her arms around, pointing far away to-ward the skies, ready to hit a home run. Cancer began to throw a series of curveballs, none of which were a match for Terri. She fouled off pitch after pitch, never letting cancer get the best of her. This intense match up carried on for what seemed like years; Terri finally decided she needed another break and called time. She racked her brain, searching for that one thing u p her sleeve that she could use to get on b a s e . Suddenly, can-cer had gotten into her head, c a r e l e s s l y spreading through her body and down her spine. De-termined to shake it off, Terri took her place in the batter’s box, unknowingly doing so for the last time. In the summer of 2003, a lengthy 5 years af- ter originally stepping up to bat against cancer, Terri swung and missed at her final pitch. Although she struck out in the end, Terri’s story of relentless courage and perseverance to bat against cancer re- mains inspirational to anyone who knew her, and now, to some who she had never met. Her inning ended June 17, 2003, but countless players both past and present bravely step up to the plate to pinch hit for Terri and for everyone else who cancer has struck out. These players make a difference, take a stand, and bat against cancer. These players change the world.

Shoot: A James Bond Film

Objective: For this project I needed to show movement through typography in the form of a word. The letters of the word could be modified, but extraneous shapes were not allowed (unless you could prove that they added to the piece rather than draw focus away from the word). I came up with a few words, but settled on shoot because I saw a great opportunity to turn the letterform on its side, creating the image of a gun. Cutting some of the stroke off of the o’s continued to capture the movement that a gun can create, and the bullet casings at the end rounded out the composition. I used InDesign for the typography and the pen tool in Illustrator to create the bullet casings. After the assignment was over, I tried to envision a higher purpose for the project and came up with an idea for a short film. The images below depict the final version of my type as movement as well as a web banner to promote the showing of the live action short “Shoot: A James Bond Film”.

Piggy Stash Mobile App

Objective: I needed to put a mobile app on the market that consumers would want as well as need. I thought of what I felt the app store needed, and stumbled upon a budget app. After days of research on what current budget apps are missing, I created Piggy Stash in an effort to promote a proactive money saving environment. Most budget apps out there just tell you what you have already spent. Piggy Stash offers alerts that help you save money and remind you to stay on budget each month in order to save for big purchases or goals the consumer can enter in the preferences section. Our goal was to create 3 mockup pages for the everyday use of the app. I used Illustrator to create the icons for the app, and a grid feature in Photoshop for the layout and format.

The Ridge Motorsports Park Promos

Objective: The client needed a complete rebrand of their company, including a new logo, identity package, promotional materials, web and mobile site, and interior as well as exterior signage. We were assigned groups in which each member was responsible for a certain piece of the rebrand. All students were instructed to design a new logo, then each group would choose one logo and build their brand around that. As a group we chose to merge my logo with another team member’s logo, which can be seen on all of the promotional materials I created. I also acted as the leader of my group since I had the most experience with Adobe Suite products, and took responsibility by speaking on behalf of the group during our presentation. Shown here are the full-size poster, rack card and promotional card for The Ridge Motorsports Park rebrand. I used InDesign for the layout of the compositions and Photoshop for the images of the park.

Various Drawings

Objective: The following drawings were drawn in Graphite, Colored Pencil and in Pen and Ink. The graphite drawing was intended to be the other half of a person’s face. We had to rip the reference photo in half and draw on the other side. For my colored pencil drawings, I used a colorless blender pencil as well as mineral spirits to get the effects shown in the marbles, and the strawberries were done on Dura-Lar film. The Pen and Ink drawings were intended for two different classes. The dog was created using hatch and cross hatch, while the background was stippled. The other pen and ink drawing is a self portrait in which I am wearing clothes that I conceptualized for an athletic wear company. I wrote the name of the company, Zagabonds, in cursive around the outline of the figure.

Endgangered Species Collage

Objective: This project was to be a Collage for a book on endangered animals. We had to choose an animal from a list, research why they were endangered and include that on the book cover that we would eventually create. I chose the harpy eagle, and thought the image of an eagle descending on its prey would be enticing enough for a consumer to pick the book up off of a shelf. I used cut outs from magazines and books, used part of a boa for the eagle’s feathers, and glitter to show the talons. We were told to use mod podge for an adhesive, and I also used it as a clear coat to cover the areas from the books and magazines. I took this project to the next step by coming up with a name for the book and showing what it might look like as a cover. I used Photoshop to create the ripped paper effect and InDesign for the typography.

T is for...Transgender

Objective: I drew the letter T for this project called A is for... We had to depict an image that began with the same letter that we drew out of a bowl. I had many ideas for this project: tongue, Tacoma, tyrannosaurus rex and texting were a few. What spoke to me most was the word transgender. I found a letterform that looked like it could be a person. All I had to do was add a head and some hands, and the serifs did the rest for me. I used Colored Pencils and Markers for this project. I liked this project so much that I thought it could be the logo for a transgender support group. I created a street sign for the group, including a digital version of my drawing done in Illustrator, shown on the next page.

Drag Queen Avatar

Objective: The intent for this project was to show layering, blending and adjustment skills in Photoshop. We were instructed to create an avatar using a document with various faces to choose from. I thought it would be interesting to show a man who transforms into his drag queen personality through the use of makeup. What made this incredibly difficult was the difference in age, skin tone and general structure of the two faces I blended together. I thought the avatar needed to be taken to the next level, so I placed the image — and created the rest of the magazine cover shown on the next page — in InDesign.

Zagabonds Poster & Magazine Cover

Objective: Developing promotional materials for a company drove the inspiration for this project. We could have used an existing company, but this is the moment I developed a name and idea for an athletic wear company: Zagabonds. I used blending modes and text tools in Photoshop for the holiday sale poster, and the magazine cover was also created in Photoshop using layer masks, color adjustment layers and text tools. The logo was created in Illustrator. I tried many variations but I believe the last two are the most professional looking, and were easily able to be reversed out.

Heroes for the Homeless 5k Event

Objective: As a part of my volunteer endeavor with the City of Fife Parks Advisory Board, we created a sub-committee of members who wanted to put on a 5k event in the city. This was a massive undertaking, but as it was our first event, we experienced moderate success. I was in charge of many aspects of the 5k because we were a team of four, but my main duties included creating the logo, t-shirt design and promotional materials. The logo was created in Illustrator, the t-shirt in Photoshop, and the poster in InDesign. The poster was a collaborative effort, as it had to be made to fit the city’s brand, (including colors and typography) to which I did not have access.

Cybersecurity and Forensics Poster

Objective: The Computer Science and Computer Information Systems departments needed a poster to highight the new degree they were offering: a B.A.S. in Cybersecurity and Forensics. They asked the Visual Communications department to come up with some preliminary designs, and a few students agreed to submit their ideas for the project. My concept was chosen, and I agreed to move forward in creating a poster for the department. Their target market for this degree was women, so I took elements from the Wonder Woman comic and applied them to my design of the poster. The posters were subsequently printed and hung around campus to develop public interest. I created the layout of the poster using InDesign and the Wonder Woman elements were drawn in Illustrator.
