33 YEARS OF BROTHERHOOD
About Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Incorporated:
As we celebrate our 33 years, Lambda Sigma Upsilon continues to make significant strides to better uplift young men of all cultures, the campus community, and the community-at-large. Currently Lambda Sigma Upsilon is comprised of 59 chapters across the United States. We are the fastest growing Latino Fraternity, recently opening 11 new chapters within the past
two years.
Our founders were men who believed that the minority population at colleges and universities were not getting the attention they so desperately needed to advance their
academic successes. With this notion, they created Lambda Sigma Upsilon to act as a support group for minorities, as well as provide a family away from home. As proof to this, our
founders developed 4 Goals that would embody the purpose of Lambda Sigma Upsilon. These Goals are:
1. Academic excellence - Ensuring that our brothers earn their degree is a main focus within Lambda Sigma Upsilon. We believe that our brothers will go beyond the extra mile to
ensure that all academic goals are achieved.
2. Cultural awareness and diversity - Lambda Sigma Upsilon maintains a strong emphasis on cultural awareness. We do not go by a typical "Greek" system (Alpha, Beta, etc.); rather we let each new chapter create its own identity, ensuring that their legacy is
passed down. The diversity of the fraternity is very evident amongst our brotherhood. Over 40 countries are represented in Lambda Sigma Upsilon, thus making LSU one of the most
diverse fraternities in the country.
3. Brotherhood - LSU prides itself on its unique and diverse brotherhood. Brotherhood provides not only a group of individuals a sense of family away from home; it helps individuals
gain a new perspective on college life. Brotherhood also provides various networking opportunities with individuals who share common interests.
4. Being role models to the community - Lambda Sigma Upsilon is well known for its service to the campus community and the community-at-large. Various projects include a charity basketball game vs. the New York Giants and Jersey City Police Department, AIDS Walk NY and NJ, NetAid Global Campaign for Education, and the American Red Cross
Remembers September 11th Campaign, MercyCorps for Haiti, Keep a Child Alive and most recently "Live Safe Campaign".
LIVE SAFE CAMPAIGN
As you all know the AIDS Walks are soon approaching this year. Our largest one is the NY AIDS Walk, which will be taking place on Sunday May 20th. For those brothers outside of the NY area, you can locate the nearest AIDS Walk by visiting http://aidswalk.net/awdirectory.html. As we have for the past two years in New York, we will be joining our Live Safe partner AID FOR AIDS International’s team. You can register NOW by visiting http://aidswalknewyork2012.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=1000060&team=4926518.
Below are some ideas on how you can raise money for the walk in your area and please remember there are AIDS Walk posters you can access at facebook.com/LiveSafeLSU but first I want to make some clarifications about the “Live Safe” campaign since we have some new brothers that were not around when we launched the campaign:• “Live Safe” is a HIV prevention and awareness campaign created and run by LSU. It is meant to
put all of our work against HIV/AIDS under one brand, so it is easier for people to recognize all we do to contribute to this cause.
• Your chapter can label/communicate all of your HIV/AIDS events as a “Live Safe” event. Check out our Live Safe FAQ page on the LSU Website. You can reach out to me at [email protected] for urgent requests to look over your promotional materials.

About Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Incorporated’s Philanthropy:
Serving the community has been essential to the existence of Lambda Sigma Upsilon (LSU) since its inception in 1979. Our Founding Fathers established the organization with a goal of
addressing the basic education needs of students of color on its campuses, especially Latinos. Proudly, the organization was able to facilitate effective change as a liaison between
Latino students and university administration.
In 1989, a time when HIV continued to sweep the country, the brotherhood lost Founder Father Alberto Rivera to complications derived from AIDS. The event struck a chord with all Brothers, who were suddenly awakened to the harsh reality of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. From that point forward, in honor of Alberto Rivera and all others who have fought the battle against HIV/AIDS, the Brothers of Lambda Sigma Upsilon decided to dedicate themselves to the cause, by adopting a national philanthropy of supporting HIV/AIDS
research and treatment programs.
For more than 20 years, Lambda Sigma Upsilon has participated in and hosted a variety of events and fundraisers, supporting people living with HIV/AIDS, including: GHMC AIDS Walk events, the AIDS Quilt, Hyacinth AIDS Foundation, "Tackling AIDS" (Guarionex
Chapter), "Stepping on AIDS" (Monarca Chapter) etc. LSU has also contributed to a number of organizations conducting research, support policy, and providing treatment to individuals living with HIV/AIDS, such as Aid for AIDS International, the Keep A Child Alive Foundation,
and Camp Heartland, among others.
Isaiah, also known as "Izzy", was born with Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. This is
when the left ventricle of the heart is severely underdeveloped. Basically, he was born with
half a heart. He will be undergoing his 4th heart surgery on May 30, and he is only 5
years old. This is a high risk surgery. Even with the surgery, him surviving it is still
questionable.
Words from the Heart is a performing arts event that showcase talents in the fields of spoken word, music, comedy and dance.
