The Feed Bag Rosie The Riveter and The Great Train Expo

Saturday, January 9th Saturday, January 9th started overcast and threaten-

ing rain for the Great Train Expo and the Rosie the Riv-eter site visit. It stayed overcast and it did rain.

There were five of us, eventually, who met up at the Craneway Pavilion, the old Ford plant, in Richmond for the train show. Apparently I miscommunicated with Marlene and Rusty on the time, so Karen, Harry and I met them at the train show.

There were lots of trains and toys of all scales for sale and several G , HO and N scale modular layouts on display. Noticeably missing were the O scale and Lego

displays. Marlene and Rusty found some train related shirts and a jacket at discounted prices. There was nothing train related that I absolutely had to have, so I went away empty handed.

After walking the sales and display area a couple of times, we walked around the waterfront from the train show to the Rosie the Riveter Richmond and National Park Site. We also discovered a great restaurant, As-semble, open for breakfast and lunch daily that is locat-ed in the Craneway Pavilion building adjacent to the Rosie the Riveter Museum.

The highlight of the Rosie experience is the 94 year old National Park Ranger, Betty Reid Soskin. Harry and Karen had another engagement that afternoon, so Marlene, Rusty and I got tickets for Ms Soskin’s presentation that afternoon. (Continued on Page 4)

February 2016 John to Larry Booth: “What are you

doing here?” Larry back to John: “What are YOU doing here?” Well, we were both at the club board meeting this week instead of wandering the aisles at the annual Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson car auction. I try to get down for this yearly auction as often as I can since Barrett-Jackson and the prices they are getting for any particular type of car, like the classic collectable Mustangs, really sets the bar for that following year.

I must say, I’m like a kid in a candy store when I’m checking out all these beauties. As a restorer, I’m looking for that car that has the winning combination of rarity, a high degree of restoration, and it doesn’t hurt if someone famous has owned or driven it!

All the auto auctions, Barrett-Jackson in particular, know that you can cover a multitude of sins with good lighting. Those cars all look great under the lights, but the smart shopper will get up close to look for any evidence of rust that might indicate the paint was slapped on over a rusted area---not good.

The best cars often include a rating from a respected judging organization. For Corvettes it’s Bloomington Gold; for Mustangs it’s MCA Gold. These certifications ensure that a high standard

has been reached. If you enjoy going to the auctions or watching them on TV you’ll often hear the auctioneer use terms like “numbers matching,” “rotisserie restoration,” “nut & bolt restoration,” “Emenger Report,” “Marti Report,” and “MCA Gold.” Other terms like “concourse trailered” and “thoroughbred unrestored” are also things that drive Mustang prices on the block. And if you think you hear the auctioneer say “Bob Perkins-owned,” you can add additional value, for sure.

Barrett Jackson has once again invited MCA to partner with the auction as they recognize how important Mustang Club of America is to the collector car market. Did you know that Ford has gotten together with Barrett Jackson to create a Barrett-Jackson Ford Mustang? I’m guessing that will be a collector car some day.

I’m starting to get the jitters just writing about Barrett-Jackson. I may not be attending the auction in person this year but I can still watch it on TV. Some of you are fan fanatics for the Warriors or the Super Bowl. Me, I’ll be faithfully watching Barrett-Jackson!

Don’t forget, we have a club meeting on Feb 10 at 7pm at Fuddrucker’s. Barrett-Jackson will be over by then and I’ll be looking for a meeting of Auction-holics Anonymous to get through to next year.

DVMA Dispatch

Adopt-a-Street and First Saturday Breakfast Saturday, February 6th at 9:00 am

We will meet in the Seafood City parking lot at 9 am and break into groups to clean up Diamond Blvd. Bring a 5 gallon bucket to hold the trash bag. Breakfast will follow at a place to be decided after clean-up. This lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Breakfast is usually lively, and, as Larry says, “If you are not there, we will talk about you.” So for your protection, you need to join us. And, you are doing a public service, too.

The dates for the rest of the year are April 30, August 6 and November 5. Mark your calendar.

Stangs Across the Straits VI Saturday, February 27th

Robin Paulsell has invited DVMA to participate in his sixth Stangs Across the Straits. This is a road rally that he puts on annu-ally for Golden Hills Mustang Club to balance out the bridge tolls he pays driving across the Carquinez Bridge to GHMC events. He figures all Golden Hills Mustangers coming to Crockett and paying the toll to get home equals what he pays throughout the year.

That being said, this is a fun event, rain or shine, and it has rained. The hills around Crockett, Pinole, Port Costa and Martinez

are quite beautiful, if you can see them through the fog and rain. The cost is a measly $7 per person for lunch. There is no

charge for the rally. You must preregister this year, there will not be any day of rally entries. It takes too long to enter the partici-pants on the day of the rally. (Note: The entry form was emailed to all members on December 3rd and one will be emailed again with the February Event Calendar.)

Robin Paulsell’s East Bay Classics is located at 1000 Loring Ave. in Crockett.

Mustangs Plus Car Show Saturday, April 16th

We understand there will be a Spring car show at Mustangs Plus on Saturday, April 16th. We will have more details as they become available and send out updates by email as we get them.

National Mustang Say Sunday, April 17th

What are you going to do for your Mustang on Sunday, April 17th. We will keep you posted here and by email on any events.

Rosie the Riveter and the Great Train Expo (Continued)

We walked the displays and went downstairs to the theater for a movie presentation on the Japanese-American flower growers from Richmond who were interred during World War 2. Ms Soskin came in and introduced a short clip about the women working in the Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond.

After the film, Ms Soskin presented a different viewpoint of the women working at Kaiser. The first clarification was that Kaiser Shipyard did not hire any-

body. All staffing was done by the union. The order of precedence for hiring was white males, then either white females or males of color, black or brown, depending on availability of able bodied souls due to the war effort. There were no women of color working as Rosies. Ms Soskin worked as

a clerk at the union updating member addresses. She was the sole person of color working there during World War 2.

Also there were no riveters at Kaiser. There were welders. Rosie the Welder just doesn’t have the same ring as Rosie the Riv-eter. Airplanes were riveted and ships were welded.

This museum is a real treasure, and worth a visit. The site is a Richmond City Park with support from the National Park Service. Ms Soskin said she makes a presentation 5 days a week. Being a City park there is no admis-sion fee. It is located at 1414 Harbour Way South in Richmond, behind the Craneway Pavilion. Go to the web site for close in parking and times that Ms Soskin will be working. Ed Guldner
