FIRST READING Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 128 Cantor, then All: Owen Alstott

SECOND READING Colossians 3:12-21 ALLELUIA Murray

GOSPEL & HOMILY Luke 2:22-40 CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

T H E L I T U R G Y O F T H E E U C H A R I S T MUSIC FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS “The Shepherds’ Farewell” from L’Enfance du Christ (11:00 am) Hector Berlioz

Thou must leave thy lowly dwelling, The humble crib, the stable bare. Babe, all mortal babes excelling, Content our earthly lot to share. Loving father, Loving mother, Shelter Thee with tender care!

Blessed Jesus, we implore Thee With humble love and holy fear. In the land that lies before Thee, Forget not us who linger here! May the shepherd’s lowly calling, Ever to Thy heart be dear!

Blest are ye beyond all measure, Thou happy father, mother mild! Guard ye your heavenly treasure, The Prince of Peace, the Holy Child! God go with you, God protect you, Guide you safely through the wild!

As we prepare to begin the New Year there are a few changes in parish staffing that I would like to announce.

First, Robert Carr has resigned as Director of Music. In addition to his love of music, Robert is a private pilot and has a great passion for flying. He has been accepted by the United States Navy Officer Candidate School where he will receive flight training which will ultimately lead to a commercial pilot’s license. This is a significant loss for our Cathedral Family. During his short time with us, Robert inaugurated our Diocesan Children’s Choir and

substantially grew our Adult Choir. While we will certainly miss his professionalism and expertise, we can at the same time be happy for him as he moves on to a new and exciting chapter in his life.

Robert is now at the mercy of the Navy’s schedule which means his last day at the Cathedral will be on December 31st. I am working with parish leadership to find an interim director who can fill in until we can have a formal search process. We are entering a very busy time of the year with Christmas, the Novena, Lent, and Easter. This busyness, combined with my health issues, means that I do not expect to begin a formal search for a permanent replacement until after the Easter season.

Second, Felizitas Martin has decided to retire. Her last night for cooking in the Rectory will be on December 30th. I am truly grateful for her dedication and care for the Cathedral priests over these past few years. I have begun an immediate search for her successor and will report back as the situation unfolds.

Third, a committee has been formed to hire a part time coordinator of religious education. We have a growing number of children in the parish and thus have a pressing need for someone to coordinate our current efforts and to provide an additional program for children in grades 3 through 6. I hope to have someone in place very soon.

Finally, I want to welcome another priest, Fr. Sean Thomson, to our parish family. Fr. Thomson is a priest of the Diocese of Fairbanks who is seeking incardination into the Diocese of Spokane. He is already familiar with the diocese as he has family living in Twisp. He will be in residence here while assisting at the parishes in Oakesdale and Tekoa in addition to some ministry here at the Cathedral as well. Please make Fr. Thomson feel welcome.

Lots of changes are on the horizon. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes for a smooth transition and blessings upon all those involved, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Darrin Connall Rector

Cathedral Altar Society

The January envelope packet contains a purple envelope that is your opportunity to support and join the Cathedral Altar Society. This is the Cathedral’s oldest continuing organization, and it sponsors community building events, fundraisers, and opportunities for spiritual growth. Money that is donated throughout the year to the Altar Society is given back to the parish for fresh flowers on the altars of the Cathedral and other special projects

that are planned for the church. Everyone may join and help with the organized events of the Altar Society, or you may simply support the Altar Society with your membership envelope and receive the benefits of having a monthly Mass that is celebrated for the members on meeting days.

Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes Wednesday, February 3 – Thursday, February 11

The Cathedral will present nine days of prayer, reflection, preaching, and music leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11, 2016. During this Novena, we will pray for all those who are seeking healing for themselves or in the life of a loved one. This healing could be spiritual, physical or emotional. Daily conferences will begin each evening at 5:15 p.m. and last for 45 minutes. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us as we ask Our Lady’s intercession for all those who are hurting in any way.

First Friday

This coming Friday, January 1st, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last Sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass. Please note: First Friday Adoration hours

have been extended from 12:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Please register in advance or for more information: (509) 448-1224 or visit www.ihrc.net. Cost $192 per person, $294 per couple for the weekend, $107 per commuter with meals.

Ministry to the Sick

If you or a loved one is sick, please remember to place their intention on the parish prayer line by contacting Jane Schneider at 535-3737 or [email protected]. In addition, if someone is facing a pending surgery or serious illness, it is very important to contact the Parish Office so that one of our priests can administer the Anointing of the Sick. A priest can come to your house, to the hospital, or meet you at the Church – it is just important to receive this sacrament of the Lord’s healing. “Are there any who are sick among you?

Let them send for the priests of the Church and let the priests

pray over them anointing them with oil…” (James 5:14)

Vigil Lights

The banks of vigil lights before the statue of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Guadalupe are an important part of our devotional life. As a practical matter, the lights are activated when an offering passes completely through the donation slot. If a bill does not pass completely through the slot, the lights cannot be activated. If you see that a bill is stuck in the slot, simply use a key or something similar to pass it through.

Holy Day of Obligation

January 1st is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. Masses will be celebrated at 5:30 pm on December 31st and 6:30 am & 10:00 am on January 1st. Christ’s human and divine natures are inseparable; thus, when the Word became flesh to dwell among us, Mary became not merely the Mother of the human Jesus but the Mother of God, for it is God made flesh whom she bore. Join us in celebrating this great mystery of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
