The Feast of Our Lady
of the Rosary7 October
St Dominic & The RosaryThe origin of the Rosary, according to tradition, began in 1214 when the Blessed Virgin Mary gave St Dominic the Rosary prayer. St Dominic was asked by Mary to preach the Rosary in order to safe guard people against evil and sin.
Many years later, in October 1571, a Christian fleet went into battle at Lepanto. Pope Pius V, himself a Dominican, had called on all Christians to join in praying the Rosary as the army of the Holy League went into battle. They won the battle and freed 15,000 Christian slaves. They attributed their victory to Mary and the praying of the Rosary. The anniversary of this day became known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the month of October was dedicated to the praying of the Rosary.
The Rosary is a popular devotion loved and practised by many. Even though Marian in character, it contains the whole Gospel story and therefore is truly a Christ-centred prayer. The Rosary is divided into decades. A decade is one “Our Father” followed by ten “Hail Mary’s” and a “Glory Be”. There are 20 stories to think about. Each story is called a “Mystery”.

How to pray the RosaryThe Rosary is begun with the sign of the Cross, followed by the Apostles Creed, followed by one Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s, and a Glory Be. Then the name of the chosen decade is announced and 1 Our Father is said, followed by 10 Hail Mary’s and a Glory Be. The Fatima prayer is then said and to finish we say together the Hail Holy Queen.Pope John Paul II had great devotion to Mary and he asked people to pray the Rosary Prayer during the month of October for peace in our world. Let us pray together 1 decade of the Rosary.

Prayers of the RosaryThe Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven
and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Fatima Prayer O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from
the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your mercy.
Hail Holy Queen Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our
sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Prayer After The Rosary
• O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that, meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
