• The opening shot is the main character (Hazel). We look down on her, she’s vulnerable. The background she is laid upon is black. This makes her stand out more and because of her white dress it makes her appear innocent but with something bad looming over her, She’s good but something dark is with her.

• This shot includes both her and Gus, They are twirling around but as they are we follow them with the camera. This allows the audience to be a part of them, This shows us that we want to follow their story and we have a close relationship with them.

• The last shot of the first bit ends with Hazel closing her eyes. This resembles the end of the story that she just narrated but the shot also lets us understand Hazel’s emotions, We can see that the first story to her was just a dream, that’s what she wants really which tells us that her reality is probably worse.

CAMERA ANGLES AND SHOTS

CAMERA ANGLES AND SHOTS

• The end of the trailer ends with Hazel closing her eyes again while crossing her arms. The trailer started with this shot, suggesting that we will follow her story from the start to the end. We end it with her. The close up on her face shows her emotions, we see she’s sad suggesting a sad ending. We grow a connection with her, we are close to her.

This close up shot allows us to get to know the character. We see her read but look out the window which is a lot lighter, this again can show us that she’s got something bad that’s always there (her cancer) because she’s sheltered by the dark corner.

This mid shot allows us to see the relationship between both characters, the swing set could show their childhood/innocence.

SOUND • Opens with piano ‘mood music’, Sets the mood and relates to the music in the film.

• Over the music we hear Hazel’s commentary. This music is to complement and support Hazel's story.

• The commentary carries on as we watch Hazels story. The more intense the relationship is the more intense the music is, makes us feel involved.

• Hazel closes her eyes- music comes to a sudden stop. It shows the end of the story and physically cuts it off.

• A more up- beat song comes in and Hazel’s commentary carries on.

• The music leads to a dramatic build up, creates suspense. The dialogue carries on over the music.

• The bit when Hazel says ‘Gus I'm a grenade’ comes to a sudden stop. It stops like a grenade has blown up, we are stunned-Physical feel of a grenade.

• Heart beat sort of sound, sudden drop. Creates tension into whether Hazel is ok. The beat represents the parents and audiences suspense.

• We see Hazel is ok, Music picks up, commentary comes back and we follow the rest of the story.

• Through the sound, we follow Hazel’s story and gain a connection to her, the music represents how we and the characters feel.

MISE EN SCENE

• Everyone in this shot is very dark-neutral colours, however Hazel is wearing a white top and the Jesus rug on the floor is pointing towards Hazel, signs resembling that she's innocent and good. Also she’s placed in the middle. The trailer is getting us to know the main characters and develop a relationship with them before the movie is released.

The guy in the background is almost a contrast, shows how bad it could get/ could foreshadow the end of the story.

Every time something good or positive happens its always in a natural/nature area. It’s always really green with lots of tree’s where as when it’s negative it’s inside or less natural back ground.
