The dog days of summer are nearing the end, the neighbor kids are back in school and the days are growing shorter. Around here there aren’t many shows, so now the show season is starting back up and I’ll be able to get back out there. However, for now, it’s the “same old/same old” for
me; that is except for a few new Unique Zoitiques I added to my collection over the summer. Yep! That’s what I chose to write about and hopefully you will be as excited about some of these items as I am!
When I purchased this 8½″ German-made woman walk-ing Borzoi, I didn’t realize
I already had one. So when I went to put it in one of my cabinets, I glanced over and saw another one
like it in a different cabinet, but to my amazement, noticed that one was
only 6″ tall. So basically it is one I don’t have, because it is in a larger
size. It is your typical glazed ceramic material and noth-ing earth-shattering, but
still a lovely collectible. The smaller version sells for around $15-$25 and is more common than the large version, thus I value my new one at $50.
Fasold & Stauch is actu-ally the newer name of the
Bock Wallendorf Thuringia, Germany factory. I didn’t know
that for the longest time and whenever I saw one, I thought how odd it was that it resembled the works of Bock Wallendorf. While their porcelain is nice enough, I never thought the sculpt-ing had that great of detail in it. There are no stark lines in the face or hands as it almost appears “blurred-like”. This lovely 9″ Diana the Huntress is one I had never laid my eyes on before and I was quite amazed I wasn’t bid up on it as I purchased this for a mere $45. Although in undecorated form, with only a gold highlight on the base, value on this could be as much as $100 to the right collector.
Who hasn’t heard of Goebel porcelain? They have been around seemingly since the beginning of time! Well, maybe not that long but they have been in existence since 1871. This lovely lady and Borzoi is made of porcelain and measures 7½″ tall. The woman looks lovingly down at her Borzoi, the way almost anyone would. On the other side of her, she is holding her bonnet against her dress. This is a less common lady & Goebel than the very popu-lar “woman in pink” that has a black and white Borzoi standing in front of her. Being on the uncom-mon side, this is valued around $200.
This porcelain was made to look like a Russian woman on purpose, as she is titled “Olga.” Made in England
by the world renowned Royal Crown Derby Company, this highly decorative piece measures 6″ tall. This
is a very rare piece that I have searched over the years for after seeing one at a fine
antique show back in the early 1980s. That one was priced way out of my range, however, when this came along at a
more reasonable price I snatched it up, although the shipping
from China was almost as much as the figure. Sadly the dog is miss-ing one of its front feet,
but after looking for this for so long, it was simply a minor
detail to me. Perhaps I will have it repaired one day but for now, I place it in a
cabinet where it is hard to see the missing piece. In perfect condition this would be valued at $350; in its cur-rent state, perhaps $100.
Getting back to Goebel is this beautifully glazed ceramic head-study measuring 5″ tall by 8½″ wide. I pined over this piece for 3 months before finally purchas-ing. It came direct from Germany but had gotten lost in the mail. I worked with the

Rachel Lauren Hunt December 2, 1991 - December 3, 2014
(Chairman’s Note: I am taking this time to spotlight one of our Borzoi Club of America junior handler, who sadly passed away this past December. Rachel’s passing brings to mind the fragility of life, and how blessed our club is to have young people, such as Rachel, involved with our breed. I am sure I speak for all club members when I say that our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Rachel’s family and friends. Sincerely, Barbara Tyler Lord - BCOA Junior Showman Chair)
Rachel Lauren Hunt lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, December 3, just one day after her 23rd birthday. She was sur-rounded by her family who loved her deeply. She embraced life to its fullest to the very end with humor and grace knowing one day she would be with her Heavenly Father. She is survived by her parents Jim and Krista Hunt, brother Nathan Hunt, sister Charlotte Hunt, grand-mother Lois Vaughn, her uncles and aunts including Dennis and Christine McGrath, Patricia Hunt, Pamela Heuer, Bob and Eunice Skehan, Tom and Suzanne Hunt, Tim and Tomalene Vaughn and numerous cousins.
Rachel graduated from Texas A&M University in August of 2014 with a degree in Allied Health, and was in the process of applying to nursing school, with her ultimate goal of becoming a Pediatric Nurse. She was a proud Aggie and a former fish camp counselor. She was also a member of the TAMU rowing team, and a member of the triathlon team, as well. As a matter of fact, Rachel competed in her last Triathlon in August of 2014. She was a gifted flute player and a member of the honors band all through middle school and high school. As lifelong member of Memorial Lutheran Church, she continued to enjoy playing her flute in Church services until shortly before her death.
She qualified to compete in Juniors at Eukanuba several years, showing several different breeds. She finished her first Borzoi when she was 13 years old. Rachel went on to win a Specialty Best in Show with
the same dog when he was 9 years old.

At the Lone Star Borzoi Club Specialty in 2014, Rachel showed both the Best in Sweepstakes puppy and the Best of Opposite Sex Sweepstakes puppy. She also handled her dog, Forrest and won Best Veteran with him. Rachel loved the dog show community and especially loved giving back. She spoke to the local 4H group at TAMU about junior handling at AKC dog shows on two differ-ent occasions. She always wanted to encourage others and help them become a better handler. She had a way of getting the best out of each dog. As a junior handler, Rachel had much success and made many friends along the way.
Rachel was the kind of young lady who always wanted to help oth-
ers. It is not surprising that her last act of kindness was to give life to those in need by organ donation.
In her honor, the Rachel Hunt Annual Memorial Trophy for the Best Junior Handler at the BCOA National Specialty has been established. Friends and family of Rachel Hunt will sup-ply a large wooden plaque to become the property of the BCOA, which will proudly display all future winners. The trophy given to each year’s recipient will be a small bronze created by Shirley McFadden. Please watch for future details about how you, as a member of the Borzoi Club of America, can support this wonder-ful memorial trophy with your donation!

Snowball was never reunited with his boy despite the efforts of many. This scene was played over and over across the gulf coast. Congressmen Tom Lantos (D-California) indicated that the picture of a child being separated from his dog was the bill’s catalyst:
“The dog was taken away from this little boy, and to watch his face was a singularly revealing and tragic experience. This legislation was born at that moment.”
The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) was introduced by Congressmen Lantos and Christopher Shays (R-Connecticut) on September 22, 2005. The bill passed the House of Representatives on May 22, 2006 and was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 6, 2006. The bill is now Public Law 109-308.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Gulf Coast Hurricanes Katrina and Rita…events that tragically illustrated the vulnerabil-ity of pets in disaster, how the human bond to pets affected evacu-ation, and the lack of organization or planning. These natural and man-made disasters set into motion an unprecedented rescue and shelter effort of over 6,000 pets in a multi-state region.
Thousands of animals perished or were permanently separated from their owners. Hundreds of rescued animals were lost in the system, illegally adopted out, stolen, or died in ill-run transport. Many people, unwilling to be separated from their pets, endan-gered themselves by not evacuating or by returning to flooded and unsafe areas to rescue their animals. The world watched as incon-solable owners were forced to evacuate without their pets.
As occurs in nearly every disaster, some individuals and organi-zations took advantage. HSUS through marketing and advertis-
ing efforts raised $34 million in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, allegedly to help save stranded and lost pets, and reunite them with their owners. Little of that money was spent for its intended purpose. Only after Louisiana’s Attorney General initiated an 18-month-long investigation into where these millions went, did HSUS agree to contribute $600,000 toward the construction of an animal shelter on the grounds of a state prison. In 2009, Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV reported that public disclosures of the disposition of the $34 million in Katrina-related donations added up to less than $7 million. When disasters strike, it is always best to research the organization you are sending money or supplies. www.charitynavigator.org is a great resource for larger institutions. State veterinarian organizations are another. Be extremely wary and donate with prudence.
The Federal PETS Act requires states to include pets in their disaster plans. Your state has one. Please look it up to understand the chain of command and resources it does and does not provide. Ultimately though, your pets depend on you.

I received my money back from eBay after filing a claim and then one day I got a call from the post office telling me it had been found and was being delivered the following day. So I actually waited 5 months before laying my eyes on it. Being an honest person, I contacted eBay to let them know it arrived but they told me I didn’t have to pay for it due to how long it took. However, I contacted the seller and found out they had to pay back money I received so I sent them the full amount anyway. I couldn’t look at it on a daily basis knowing it was not paid for so now I can gaze upon it lovingly without guilt. Very rare and valued at $200.
Heart-be-still; I adore this next head study. It measures a large 9″ and is made of a thick and heavy ceramic. There is an engraved
mark of “Mari Original” on the backside without a date. The detail of
the well sculpted hair is remarkable. It’s pretty to look at via picture form
but in person it will knock your socks off. The reason I love this so much is that it resembles my own
beautiful champion youngster Zydeco. While I couldn’t locate any informa-tion on the artist, I would venture to say they are quite successful. I held my breath waiting for the auction to be over and I was
delighted to have won this for under $60. Value to me is priceless but I’d have paid up to $200 had I seen it in an antique shop. My best for last this time has become one of my most favorites in my vast collection. Haas & Czjzek has been a fine por-celain manufacturing factory since 1879 out of Czechoslovakia. Living up to its name is this gor-geous 7″ lady sitting with her arm around her pretty Borzoi. This very rare figurine reeks of elegance. Fine china is an understatement for the workmanship involved in this porcelain. From the lovely placed curls on the Borzoi down to the painted eye-brows of the lady, as I look at it, I almost get goose bumps. Never having seen this figurine before, and knowing what some collectors would pay for such a beauty, I value this at $400. Yes; it is that beautiful in person.

Aristocrat Mission Statement
The Aristocrat is the official publication of the Borzoi Club of America and is published quarterly in order to inform, educate and entertain the members by providing historical and current information on the Breed and issues affecting the well-being of our Borzoi.
Statement of Intent:It is the intent that the Aristocrat:• Serve as a record of BCOA and its activities• To provide a convenient forum for the reporting of statistics on the accomplishments of the members in conformation and performance
events.
Policies• Deadlines for submission of material for the Aristocrat are February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15. A separate Specialty issue
may be offered so that the results can be published as soon as possible after the National. • Deadlines established by the Aristocrat Committee will be strictly adhered to. • The right to reasonably edit all material or refuse to print material thought to be questionable or not in the best interest of the breed or
Club is reserved by the Aristocrat Committee and the Editor. • Only signed letters or articles will be accepted for use. • Only Borzoi-related artwork will be utilized for the cover of the Aristocrat. If artwork is not available for a particular issue then the Club
